We came here for dinner, and while the beer selection was pretty good, I thought the food was disappointing. We started with some pretzels and beer cheese, which were enjoyable (they're pretty hard to mess up) but not great. For an entree I ordered the walleye - the fish was not great quality, and the breading was bland and greasy. At least the fries that came with it were good, they were hot and had some nice flavor from a little black pepper. read more

First time in South Haven and trying out Kitchen 527. We ended up here by sheer chance since we were in search of a lunch place. The place is very unassuming since but boy does it deliver. Their sign says best walleye in the region and I'm certain that is a true statement. It was delicious!!! I rarely think restaurant fish is great but I could've easily eaten another three portions of that fish. I'll be back to enjoy more. read more

A friend recommended that I try Kitchen 527. He's been going there for years and loves it, so we made a date and visited last week. I'm happy to say this will become a regular stop for me when I'm in town. We split the mussels for an appetizer. When asked how spicy we wanted them, we asked for medium. I'd say they were still mild, and I'm not a huge fan of heat. They were delicious, but I could have used a little more bread to help sop up the delicious juice that was left. Insider tip: Ask for a cup to put the left over juice in.. take it home and steam some frozen shrimp in it. It'll be delicious! For my main course, I went with the pan seared grouper. Again, absolutely delicious. The breading was awesome and the fish was cooked perfectly. VERY happy with my meal, and not at all upset with the $45 bill (I picked up the appetizer and a glass of wine). read more

Small gunshot bldg. in the heart of South Haven,MI. You will be greeted by a hostess as you walk in to the restaurant. They play eclectic music albeit a little loud. Our server greeted us right away and took a drink order. Great selection of local beer, but it needs to be on a list not on a chalk board that is difficult to read, although the staff knows it well. Two bars and several "family" style long tables. Definitely would choose the chefs table next time. The staff is always cleaning. Which is refreshing when many places you have to ask for a table to be washed. We arrived at 2:30, placed our order within 10 mins. Of sitting down, our food finally arrived at 3:10. The food was worth the wait! We ordered the Sinatra burger, medium rare.which was spot on. We also had the southern grilled cheese which was awesome and The quinoa,sweet potato burger. Was so thankful to be seated here! We had walked up and down downtown South Haven and most places had stopped adding people to their wait list so I thought we might be going home hungry. Thankfully, this was one of the last places we stopped by and they seated us right away on a Friday night around 7:30pm. Menu was pretty limited-have to definitely be in the mood for fried chicken or a burger. Would have appreciated a few more healthy, creative, or classic items, but hey, it was food and I was hungry. I was recently on a roadtrip to Saugatuck/Holland, and our group stopped in South Haven for a late dinner. We walked around the block and decided to go to Kitchen 527 because of the positive reviews. Overall, the dinner items are quite heavy-- I think almost all the appetizers are fried. I wanted to have some veggies, so my friend and I split the mac and cheese of the day and the arugula salad. The arugula salad was surprisingly large-- definitely needed this in contrast to the heavy mac and cheese. The mac and cheese of the day came was prosciutto, shrimp, and chive. We didn't find any shrimp which was disappointing, but overall, it was very decadent. I would recommend this particular rendition. Other items ordered were the quinoa patty and the monster burger. Both seemed to enjoy their dishes. If you're in the area and want some hefty food try this place out. read more

They were busy and had to wait for table ( no big deal). Thought it took a little too long to get meal, but it was worth the wait in the end. The kitchen was technically closed (we came in real close to closing!) and the owner threw us a solid by sneaking in our order despite them already being short staffed, ready to go home, with a half filled restaurant still there. Stopped in for lunch. It was not good. first, we sent the fried green tomatoes back because the were not cooked through. The cod was in the same state -- the batter well-done on the outside, but raw within. you could still form the dough into balls. The burger seemed a bit off as well. A really good lunch place. I had the "Waldorf" burger with goat cheese instead of bleu. Loved the pretzel bun, best pretzel burger bun I've ever had. Really good burger! Great fries. Leaving South Haven Michigan tomorrow after spending a week here. We have eaten dinner out every night. I have to mention a hidden gem of a restaurant that I thought,when we walked in, would be just a bar type quality food and service. It is not fancy or lavishly decorated. I have to admit that I was wrong! Our server, Jamie, was very friendly and very good with the service she provided. I ordered the 1/2 fried chicken dinner. It was delicious, moist and flavorful. My wife ordered the sweet potato quinoa sandwich. It was so delicious that we came back 2 days later and my wife brought a friend and the 2 of them had the same sandwich again. I tried their hamburger and they cooked it perfectly. It was juicy and seasoned just right. I met the owner, Eric, after our 2nd meal and made him aware of how pleased we were with our food and their service. Would I go back to Kitchen 527? Let me answer it this way, we came back today and my wife bought a gift certificate for the family who let us stay in their home as a thank you gift. read more

I came to south haven for a quick weekend trip last week and with only 2 nights for dinner, I wanted to make sure I picked the best possible place to spend our time and money. I saw the menu for kitchen 527 on yelp and the positive reviews and was SO excited to eat a nice dinner here on Saturday. We arrived around 7:30pm and sat at the bar for drinks and dinner. We were waited on by the bartender, who was nice but distracted with some drunk girls that just sat down as well as making drinks for the restaurant. We ordered drinks and asked for some opinions on the menu. We decided to go with the cauliflower app special, the fries, and the blackened grouper special. We put our order in and found out they ran out of the cauliflower, so we got the asparagus. The fries came out shortly after and were burnt and way over crispy. We sent them back and the bartender was like "yep, I noticed that on the way out. Way too over cooked" and I was thinking-- if you noticed that, why did you even serve them??? They were better the second round. The asparagus was good too-- good sauce and cooked well. We waited for around 20 more minutes to 9:20 or so and I decided to ask about our entree. The bartender goes- "oh my gosh. I forgot to put it in. I'm so sorry. Is there anything I can get you on your way out to go??" Like YEAH. THE FOOD I ORDERED!!!! So after sitting at the restaurant for 1.5 hours all we were served were fries and asparagus so we left hungry and mad. The kitchen apparently made an extra order of Mac and cheese, so they gave that to us as well as we walked out.... Positive note- drinks were good and reasonably priced. A good choice for dinner! Kitchen 527 delivers a diverse menu with some interesting options and a salad bar. Most intriguing were the Quinoa Sweet Potato Cakes and the Monster Burger which is topped with bacon onion jam and grilled cheese. My mom and I split a Breakfast Burger which was perfect, better than other versions I've had elsewhere. Our friend raved about her Cola Turkey Sandwich. It was salty, flavorful, and served on a burger bun, but not my kind of dish. For $3 more, you can upgrade your fries to the salad bar. Considering the shoestring fries are below average taste-wise, the salad bar is a far better deal! The couple sitting next to us said their Mussels were phenomenal and you get a ton. We received friendly service, but our experience would have been better if our server were more knowledgable about the menu. He forgot a few things we had asked for. Also, my mom and I shared a dish and would have appreciated an additional plate. Not a huge deal, but we felt like scavengers bent over the same plate. I like that Kitchen 527 is a good balance between casual and a bit more. The space is not large, nice without being pretentious, lots of simple wood and low lighting. The menu is not huge, but has a good amount of options, including some good veggie friendly ones (we had a vegetarian in our group who was impressed). We came with a large group, fourteen in our bachelorette party, and with a variety of tastes, everyone was able to find something they liked. The burgers and mac and cheese were very popular with our group. Everyone particularly loved the shoe-string rosemary fries, the right amount crispness with a soft interior, and the rosemary added a little something different. Both myself and the bride had the salmon with curry sauce, spinach and mashed potatoes. This was a combination of ingredients I'd never had together, and now I wonder why as we both agreed it was amazing. I want to go back just to order it again. The drink menu was surprisingly good, and again, everyone was happy. The service was good, they were able to manage a large group that also meant several separate checks. For some reason this place just wasn't on my radar but I finally checked the menu online today and was like wow that sounds good! We had the grouper and the salmon, both were great! The curry was super yummy and unexpected on the salmon and the grouper had a kick and the grits were great. I like how they seem to have a bunch of healthier and also vegetarian friendly items. Came here for lunch right after they opened on a Saturday. When we ordered, we were one of two tables seated. I felt the food service was a little slow given the limited tables and at least 3 people in the open kitchen area. Luckily, the make your own burger and Italian beef were great. In the spring people get married. And babies are born. Sometimes at the same time. We flew into Chicago and then drove up to South Haven for the St. Patrick's Day weekend - before heading back to Kalamazoo - to attend a weekend baptism-wedding-baptism trifecta (too complicated to explain). We decided to eat at Kitchen 527 Friday night. Usually when we're in South Haven in the summer, we go to the beach, and we don't want to go someplace too nice because by the time dinner time arrives we are covered in sand and sweat and skin protection. But this is mid March and we were adequately washed. The restaurant is long and narrow with a bar immediately to the right, with seats at a counter overlooking the open kitchen farther back. The salad bar and the bathroom are at the rear. There were two TVs playing but soundlessly (close captioning was turned on instead). To the left are large tables (up to 8 chairs), which might mean a couple might be seated at the same table with a group of four. I had the fish and chips. My girl had grilled salmon on a bed of spinach and parsnip puree. She thought the serving was ample and delicious. I thought my fish was tender and tasty. I understood beforehand when I was ordering that the dish had potato chips instead of the traditional fries, but the very thin, very pale waffle cut fries, if homemade, tasted like Pringles. I expected something more distinctive to match the fish. I should have asked for a side order of fries. The tartar sauce was similarly bland. Dessert was a raspberry white chocolate bread pudding and a luxurious helping of a multi-layered chocolate cake. Both were scrumptious. The service was attentive and professional. The restaurant is alike in format like many in the area: Fuze and the 600 Kitchen and Bar in Kalamazoo come first to mind. Sometimes I get the feeling everyone went to a conference and took home the same ideas, e.g., "Hey, let's list the ingredients for each entree and appetizer on the menu. Dirty cous cous, argula, mint, honey yogurt. We can then sell chicken for $20. And entrees and appetizers are big plates and little plates now. And we quote Vietnamese philosophers who talk about food being a gift from the Earth. And we're not a restaurant anymore. We're a kitchen." Fine. It's a trend. I like this kitchen in South Haven. Here it goes, I skip the line of all the Illinois people at Clementines and give the swanky place a go. Were greeted by the kid that strolls up to the host stand and he takes me, wife and mother In law, two kids to the back of the place and attempts to sit us at an already occupied 10 top for some banquet style dining all while there are three other empty tables open next to it. No thanks. We cram into the corner as to not crowd in with the other group with our kids. We set here for about 8 minutes with no contact From the staff. Finally a waitress asks us if we've been helped. "Nope" and she says she will be back. 5 more minutes she's back for our food order... No drinks yet, no drink order taken. We ask for kids menu... that comes 5 minuets later and looks as if it has been around since Captain Lou's opened in the 90's (Winkled and dirty) She is back now for the order and off it goes. I have to mention the place is not busy and it still takes forever to get the food. Burgers And fries. Fries are cold... burger is good, kids grilled cheese looks like my kid made it. The take away from the whole experience was zero &$cks given today and no manager watching the show. Hope it gets better. read more

I'm sad to say that Kitchen 527 was very disappointing! We ordered the special for our daughter which was Pork Belly Mac & Cheese. The cheese was flavorless, and the pork belly tasted like fake smoke. It literally had no flavor, it needed salt to start the flavor process and maybe even a different cheese option. It was the worst Mac & Cheese I've ever had. And a complete waste of $14. My husband had the Prime Rib Sandwich. It looked good, but tasted like it was from Sysco or Gordon's and was either microwaved or MAYBE tossed on the grill for a minute. I ordered a burger, cooked medium and it was well done. The bacon on it was the best part. The lettuce that came on it looked like it should've been ornamental, it was very leafy and not crispy at all (I took it off). The fries were frozen seasoned fries and were actually not too bad. We ordered iced tea, which they make themselves, and it was very good! Our waitress was not friendly until we were leaving. Maybe she was having a bad day. She brought my husband a refill and never offered me more tea, not even when my cup was empty and she never came to ask how our food was. We stopped her going by and asked for mayo for my burger since it didn't come on it and I forgot to ask for it when I ordered. Our bill was $50 and we felt ripped off. I have been wanting to try Kitchen 527 all summer, but we just never found the time. Today we had a funeral visitation in South Haven and decided to stop here afterwards. We walked in around 3:30pm. I really liked the atmosphere. Dark red walls, open kitchen where you can sit and watch the cook, and they also have seating around the bar area. We were seated in the middle (party of 2). I didn't care for our table since everyone had to walk by (on both sides) to get towards the back. But most of the tables are huge and sit upwards to 6 people, so I understand why they sat us where they did. The menu looked good and so did the specials. Our waitress was courteous and attentive. I ordered the Pumpkin & Curry soup, which was absolutely wonderful. It has to be one of the prettiest soup presentations I have ever seen. D ordered the Chef's Mac & Cheese. It looked delicious and it was. Pecan smoked pork shoulder & Calabrian chilies with white cheddar sauce, topped with toasted bread crumbs. Lucky for me, he didn't eat it all and I have the leftovers!
