I have been wanting to try Kitchen 527 all summer, but we just never found the time. Today we had a funeral visitation in South Haven and decided to stop here afterwards. We walked in around 3:30pm. I really liked the atmosphere. Dark red walls, open kitchen where you can sit and watch the cook, and they also have seating around the bar area. We were seated in the middle (party of 2). I didn't care for our table since everyone had to walk by (on both sides) to get towards the back. But most of the tables are huge and sit upwards to 6 people, so I understand why they sat us where they did. The menu looked good and so did the specials. Our waitress was courteous and attentive. I ordered the Pumpkin & Curry soup, which was absolutely wonderful. It has to be one of the prettiest soup presentations I have ever seen. D ordered the Chef's Mac & Cheese. It looked delicious and it was. Pecan smoked pork shoulder & Calabrian chilies with white cheddar sauce, topped with toasted bread crumbs. Lucky for me, he didn't eat it all and I have the leftovers! We can't wait to go back and try more of the items at Kitchen 527. read more

We were coaxed in the door by our waitress, Erica. She said, yes they could adapt a veggie meal to vegan! So we walked through the door and are thrilled we Did! My beet burger was motified And added to and morphed into a delight to my taste buds! Paired with the shoestring rosemary French fries cooked in canola made for a delightful lunch! Good and service are amazing! This is our favorite spot in South Haven for lunch or dinner.

Came from out of town to celebrate our anniversary and was excited to try this place. The menu and the atmosphere didn't match, but that's fine by me! I saw bone marrow and tiger shrimp with house made gnocchi and blackened red snapper and I presumed fancy restaurant. We arrived and most tables seemed to be eating burgers and sandwiches, and the decor and noise level felt more like a burger joint than a fancy restaurant. We ordered the bone marrow appetizer, because it's so rare to find that gem on a menu. Unfortunately, it came out about 5 minutes after our dinner entrees, but we were impressed with six huge bones with a respectable amount of marrow each. This appetizer is definitely suitable for a larger table, and at a reasonable price. However, it was smothered in brown sugar... it had caramelized into a crispy glaze that completely masked the flavor of the bone marrow itself. A dish with such delicate flavors shouldn't be covered in sugar. The side plate of spicy giardiniera, shaved ginger, and brown mustard was baffling. Am I supposed to put those spicy/savory things on bone marrow already covered in brown sugar? This dish cried out, "Help me! The chef here has amazing ingredients but is very confused about how to use them!" My gnocchi with tiger shrimp was excellent. They tossed in some of that giardiniera mentioned earlier to give it a bit of a kick, and the creamy sauce combined with a bit of spice made for a very good dish. However, with the appetizer coming out during the meal, the flavor combination of creamy-and-spicy with syrupy-sweet-and-savory was a bit off-putting. This speciifc appetizer and main course combination should never be eaten at the same time. My companion enjoyed her meal. The service was pleasant and kept tabs on us, and apologized for the appetizer mix-up (but didn't offer anything to make it right). Overall, I liked the place, but wait staff should be trained to know that if you have an appetizer that takes 15-20 minutes to cook, you should hold off on putting in the dinner order so things come out in the proper order. Try it out if you're in South Haven, and enjoy the uniqueness of the menu and atmosphere. read more

Stop what you're doing right now and head over here. Great service, friendly and genuine. The lunch menu is small but mighty. Unusual but delicious burgers and sandwiches. I had the cola turkey. I don't even know what was on it but pure deliciousness. Fries are rosemary seasoned and unfortunately I only had a few because I was stuffed. Kids menu and for the picky ones in your group they can get the Sinatra burger (have it your way the menu says, cute, get it?). We also had cheese curd appetizers with some sort of wasabi blend sauce for dipping. YUM. For a family of 4 our bill was $50 which I thought was decent, especially since we had an appetizer. They have a salad bar that we did not get, I thought $7 for one trip was a bit steep. However, I did look at it on my way to the bathroom and looked really good (various types of lettuce and blueberries!). Unisex bathrooms were large, clean, and well stocked. Waddup South Haven? On a recent visit, the boy and I decided to try Kitchen 527 for the first time ever. Believe it or not, we haven't been here before! This bar restaurant combo offers a selection of your standard bar food, but they also have vegetarian options. Located just off Phoenix St and across the street from the weekly farmer's market, it's a perfect spot to go for lunch or dinner. Despite it's dark interior, the staff is helpful and welcoming. Our server was happy to offer options as we debated between several menu items. After finishing our Bloody Marys with jalapeno infused vodka, we decided to go with the chili and split a quinoa burger with waffle fries. Boy, am I glad we decided to split our entrée. The portion sizes are generous and appropriate for the price you pay. First stop, chili town. The chili was delicious and mild and packed with all of your typical chili fixin's. Next stop, quinoa sweet potato burger. Alright guys, you know how veggie burgers fall apart after the first bite? Not this one! It maintained it's delicious, flavorful structure until the very end. We were not sure what to expect on a lovely first Saturday in June, with farmer's market in full swing. But to our delight, the place wasn't terribly packed and the hostess seated us immediately. (Around lunch time) The server was attentive and very nice. Took our orders promptly and we settled in. The restaurant is dimly lit and welcoming. The walls had several photographs from local artists of mostly South Haven pier. Each table had a cute little caddy with all the condiments you could want available to you, including Sciracha ketchup and a little bottle opener! We ordered the wings as an appetizer. They came to the table piping hot! A few were just slightly undercooked, but overall very tasty. I ordered the quinoa, spinach curry burger and my husband ordered the Sinatra burger. Both came with their delicious rosemary fries and both AWESOME!! I haven't a single complaint or suggestion for improvement that I can think of. Keep up the great work! read more

Some of our food was excellent, and other parts of our meal were quite poor. They were out of the Quinoa cakes, and I ordered the pierogies, which were quite good. My niece's kids mini corn dogs were overdone (almost burned) and our mussels appetizer was almost half unopened or broken shells. While a few ones that don't open are the norm, they shouldn't be serving mussels that have broken shells that are unsafe to eat. The burgers were advertised as cooked medium, but came well done. The gnocchi appetizer was excellent, and the salmon special had good flavor, but like the burgers, was overcooked. Service was competent at our table, but I overheard a server tell the table next door that she hasn't tried a particular menu item because she was afraid of it. What?! read more

We didn't expect much from a eating establishment in a pretty touristy beach town, but we took a chance since the prices weren't exorbitant and they had Walleye fish and chips, and smoked pork sandwiches. It doesn't look like much on the outside or inside, but the service was extremely fast and efficient and the food exceptional. The Walleye was two large but not huge fillets, coated nicely with a cornmeal breading and fried perfectly, with a included side of wonderful crunchy spiced fries and the ubiquitous small thimble full of very good coleslaw. My wife's smoked pork sandwich was some of the best smoked pork we have had, very lean and intensely smoked on a nice bun. read more

Came to Kitchen 527 with family, a party of 12. They seated us fairly quickly as we agreed to split tables. It's a pretty busy place. Ambience is cute and casual. Burgers were excellent! My burger was topped with arugula...yum! Good size burger on a pretzel bun with rosemary fries for $9...great deal. Staff was very friendly and sincere. This place is delicious. It's a rather quirky ambience. It's trying maybe to be two things at once, modern new American with food cooking in front of you at the bar + old school bar. We were seated by the salad bar?! So kinda odd and quirky atmosphere. However. Food was really quite amazing and delicious. We had the avocado fries, gnocchi, cheese curds, and mussels. All were really tasty and had different flavors/twists on them. We also enjoyed their pretty diverse beer menu. Entrees were just as tasty. I had the monster burger and it lived up to it's billing and others had positive things to say about their food. Really bad food and even worse service. Very over priced for what you get. I understand this is a tourist town, but this placeis ridiculous! I ordered a $13 chicken walnut salad. It was served in a small cereal bowl, with 2 small pieces of thigh meat (perhaps left over from someone else's meal) and 3 walnuts. The dressing was only Vinegar. We ordered right away, and it took 46 minutes for our food to be served. Only two other couples in the restaurant at the time, during a busy time of a weekend day. read more

Great atmosphere and nice choice of cocktails! The burgers and fries are amazing. The chuck tender was pretty good, however the mashed potatoes were not at all what the menu stated.... they were vinegary instead of cheddar. The staff was friendly and efficient. I was on a vacation with extended family in South Haven when we decided to give Kitchen 527 a try. We walked in and saw open tables available. When I checked in with the host I stated that while we are bigger group (10) we were willing to wait for the big table to open up or split into groups. We were told by the male host, who was visibly nervous, that we could not split into groups and that he could not tell us when the big table would be open. Additonally, he stated that we could not wait for the big table to open up! I was shocked by their negative attitude and open hostility towards us as all we had done was walk into their restaurant. A matter of racism from the restaurant as I was the only caucasian person in our party of ten? It certainly seemed like it. We won't back that is for sure. read more

First impression. Not too loud. Amiable. Courteous helpful hostess. Lacquered bar tables. Menu manages to have something for everyone without being too expansive. Sound vegan options are available. Delightful seafood choices such as grouper and mussels are there for pesco vegetarians. 1/2 lb burgers and prosciutto encrusted carbonara rounds out some of the other meatier choices. Family friendly. Fair prices. Roasted Garlic Appetizer is totally awesome. Sweet from an apple goat cheese, swirls with the terse excitement of the roasted garlic. Ask for another piece of baguette with it when it arrives. You will need it. The mac and cheese is a comfort food dream with white cheddar, shrimp and chorizo. The Carbonara was rich without being over the top. They could have had less prosciutto, but that is really personal preference. Pasta was fresh and perfectly cooked. The grouper sandwich came with arugula, home made tartar sauce, and a local sourdough bread. Another winner. If I had one suggestion it would be to dial back the savory just a bit. Delicious and fresh. Kid friendly too. We dined here last year with our two young kids and did not hesitate to go back. We shared cheese curds then I had the steak and my husband ordered a pasta bowl. Everything came out delicious, well seasoned and made from recognizably fresh ingredients. Pleasantly surprised! I had the fired portobello mushrooms and they were amazing!! The dipping sauce had a hit of coffee to it and it paired together perfectly! I would have never guessed! The rosemary fries were delicious as well. Awesome craft beer selection. I had a something from Saugutuck brewery that had hits of blueberry and of course that too was good! So the website says happy hour 4-6. Guess what. They don't do happy hour. Not a great way to start an experience. Good beer selection. Lots of local options. I had the roasted chicken. Picture on website looked great. What was served was quite a bit different and it was loaded with peas. I hate peas. They were also not in description on menu. Fried portabella mushrooms were very good but served with coffee grounds in mayo??? Disgusting. We got the ranch for dipping. So. Some good mixed with really bad or misrepresented. A little more than I like to pay for a plain burger and shoestring fries, but it was an outstanding burger and the fries, though not my favorite, were okay. We came as a party of 6 at 6:30 PM on a Saturday, and though at first they told us an hour's wait, they managed to get us a table only shortly after. The service was very friendly and we got the food in good order. All six of us had either the Sinatra or the Waldorf burger, and no complaints at all. The place was packed, but we all were able to converse with each other and enjoyed the atmosphere. I had a piece of their chocolate cake, and oh my! That was really good cake. Wacky service and uninspired decor for starters. Why is there a TV in the corner against a ceiling with a bright light shining right in front of it? Anyway... The menu is quite limited much like South Haven in general. We had a fish special and carbonara. Both were tasty enough but the carbonara was lacking.
