Klondike Kate's is a Newark staple, and it's easy to see why. 1. It's a bar 2. In the center of town 3. On Main Street 4. Of a college town. There is nothing good or bad to say about this place. My food was ok, the service was ok, the noise level was ok, even with a live musician on a sunny Sunday morning. We were mostly left on our own once we ordered, as every seat was filled during our visit, and ours was not their ideal Sunday morning table. (College students with their parents.) I was glad that the TVs had no sound playing, and was confused about the choice of programming an AirFryer infomercial, but it did eventually change to a varsity basketball game. As for our food, two at our table ordered burgers, one had the yogurt parfait, because as Donkey explained to Shrek "Everyone likes parfait. Parfaits are delicious!" Unfortunately the parfait was really just a big bowl of yogurt and granola, but it was tasty, even if not in its proper form. I had the breakfast Tator Totchos, which were ok, but drowning in so much cheese sauce that the tots were mush. The poached eggs on top were nicely done. It's been nearly 30 years since my student days in Newark, and even then I was not part of the "bar on Main Street" crowd. (RIP Subway, you were my first, and I still judge all other Subway experiences against you.) There are so many new and wonderful places in the area, most with food and service better than ok. Take your parents to those places and skip Klondike Kate's unless the specials are truly spectacular. read more

James provided GREAT customer service. He was so pleasant that we just had to ask him what he's majoring in, he responded Communications which makes total sense. This young man was great. Our food was awesome. It's been years since we have eaten here and we thought let's go back and so happy we did. My husband enjoyed the twist on cuban and my well done burger was done to perfection, it was still juicy. We'll be back more often! Oh wait! I did make another observation. There was a young man named Darren diligently and quickly clearing and thoroughly disinfecting the tables. He moved so swiftly and efficiently that both my husband and I took notice. Well, it was good while it lasted. The food here is still fine, but until this business gets their staff together and improves their service, I can only give them one out of five stars. Last night was the epitome of terrible; my three friends and I waited over 45 minutes for our food, and when it did arrive, my french fries were cold and dry, my friend's steak was overcooked (and even burnt in some places), and the waiter was so distracted we didn't even get a chance to tell him what was wrong. I have had too many inaccurate orders to sit patiently any more. Klondike Kate's needs to improve the quality of service it provides to guests, or more people like myself will be taking our dollars and our stomachs elsewhere. read more

Ah Klondike Kate's. The nostalgia. I used to love Kate's back in the day. The food. The beautiful woodwork of the bar. The atmosphere on a Friday night was completely different than on parents' weekend when our parents would take us for the food. The food by the way was amazing. Very eclectic but still great. Whether it was the chicken parmesan or a burger, Kate's is one of the few places that had a menu with a variety that wide and managed to do everything well. Like the old Bennigan's as far as look and decor but much better and more upscale. Kate's is an institution for UD students and grads just like the Old College building. The only reason I stopped being a regular at Kate's was that the Brickyard which since closed down had free roast beef and meatball sandwiches every Friday night along with $1 drafts. Kates is a University of Delaware tradition just like when a man and woman happened to meet under the arches by Memorial Hall they are supposed to kiss (don't do that during Corona or when Mono is going around), because in the olden days that was where men kissed their dates, because men were not allowed passed the arches to South Campus. Fortunately, that changed by the time I was there. Do not ask me whom introduced me to that tradition Freshman year. Leave your caps and gowns on and go to Kate's after commencement. Unfortunately this visit to the restaurant last Sunday morning was very disappointing. In the past food and service has been very good. There were 9 of us for brunch. We were seated immediately. It was not crowded. The waitress was not friendly. The food, when it arrived was cold and some bacon undercooked. A few people sent it back to be warmed. The checks were wrong and needed correction. It was disappointing. I'm sure there was a reason for this poor experience but I know some people will not be returning. read more

My absolute favorite place on Main Street. Whenever anyone needs a good restaurant recommendation I always recommend Kate's. First off, let me talk about the reservation system. Kate's makes it so easy to make reservations by calling and if it's too late to make a reservation they will put you name on the wait list so you're not wasting time on the way there. Kate's will send you a text and call you when your table is ready and are really flexible when it comes to you being a little late as long as you let them know ahead of time. Second off, the waitstaff is always incredibly friendly and happy to recommend you their favorite items on the menu. Speaking of the menu everything I have ordered has been consistently amazing. Kate's gets a lot of attention for their nachos and it's not for no reason. Their nachos are delicious and the portions are huge! When coming here with my boyfriend the small plate of nachos was enough to fill both of us up before we even got out main entree! We didn't even make it through the entire plate before we felt like we were going to burst. The Trash Can nachos are my favorite and are a little pricey, but if you go on Tuesdays the nachos are half off. I've also had many of Kate's sandwiches and other appetizers as well. The Chicken Press is a great sandwich and they do the French Dip very well. Kate's wings were also great and I was happy they were not too spicy, I'm a little sensitive when it comes to spice. Kate's has the perfect environment for Main Street and is both a great for adults to enjoy drinks and for families looking to get a good bite. For an entire year, I used to eat and drink here almost (literally) every single day. Barring shellfish and some of the burgers, I have had almost everything on their menu. You can't go wrong with the food here and the drinks are great as well! Delivery is solid too. The service can be improved. It's good, but it is still short of what you would get at Iron Hill. Visited today, 12-17-23 for brunch. Service okay but staff generally not overly friendly. I had the Philly skillet which was good. My wife had the nachos which left a lot to be desired. She chose the nachos with chicken which was $21.00. Chicken was cubed, sparse and dried out with no taste (so maybe good thing chicken was sparse). Lots of lettuce and cubed tomatoes. Appears one or two olives sliced (maybe there is a shortage). Very little cheese and what was present was not tasty. One small container of sour cream (we asked for more). One container of salsa that was soupy having appeared to have been diluted with water. Plenty of nacho chips but 90% were not covered with either cheese or chicken. I took my wife to this location since she is a nacho aficionado and had heard this place had great nachos. We will not be back. read more

Had a good experience here despite some of the bad reviews. Got take-out last night and ordered the Mexicali Burger which was great as well as a caesar salad. The food was ready in less than 20 minutes, and the pickup was quick and easy. Apon arrival it seemed like this place was busy on the inside and looked like a really cool place. Cool little bar/restaurant in Downtown Newark. Let me first start off by saying, the service was great! Our waiter was very attentive and our appetizer/entrees/dessert all came out very fast. We never had to ask for anything! The food was good, but it wasn't the best I've ever had. Entrees were a bit pricey for what you got. I had the bacon wrapped meat loaf and it was decent! The grilled vegetables I got had a lot of melted butter piled underneath them and that was a bit much. Our favorite part of the meal was our dessert. We got a s'mores dip and it was amazing! We came for breakfast right at opening on Saturday in late august. While our food was good, our server seemed like she was hungover and did not know anything g about the menu. We were the first table seated and our waitress said it was her first weekend back for the school year at U Del. Not a problem for us but when asked questions she literally was just like "oh I don't know" and didn't look/ask to find answers. My MIL is gluten and dairy free and normally restaurants easily accommodate this but again our waitress was having difficulty and basically offered her the bare minimum in terms of answers. Also, the waitress kept placing hot coffee, milk, utensils, etc in front of our (at the time) 10 month old so we kept quickly clearing that space. We came here from recommendation of a U Del alumna. It hurts to say this because this used to be a five star review, but after the complete absurdity I have experienced, I wish I could give this place a negative review, considering how completely rude and discriminate this place is against same sex relationships. As apparently if you're in there with the same sex in a date, they will completely judge you, and will make fun of you to the point that you will feel so uncontrollable to not be there anymore, and that is ridiculous considering the century we're living in. While I've never been dissatisfied with any regular meal at Kate's, the nachos stand above all else. I thought everyone knew about them until I recently went with a friend who was surprised by how good they were. Trashcan is the best go-to with the classic and greasy combos. Never ate here until recently. Heard the hype, so here we go. Seated after a 10 to 15 minute wait. Server took our drink order then we waited 15 minutes for our drinks. Waited another 10 minutes before we ordered our food. Ordered nachos and a bowl of chili. Both were average at best. Chili was runny and not thick. Tasted ok. Nothing to write home about. Nachos were very poor... very little toppings, cheese was almost nonexistent. Few other toppings, skimpy portions of salsa, sour cream, jalapenos and refried beans. All the while our server disappeared. Couldn't find her if we tried. She was behind the bar chatting with other customers. Finally got our check, paid, and left. Won't be eating here again. I go to Kates frequently, but this last time I ordered a Togo meal. Two salads, exactly the same. I ended up waiting 45 minutes on a Monday night. When I got there at my pickup time they only made half of it and I had to come back into the restaurant to get the other half. When I got home neither salad had dressing with it. So I paid close to $40 for two salads that didn't even have dressing and a long wait. My advice, if you want Togo, don't order from here. read more

Went to a drag brunch event at this location on 2/12/23. First the event was on the second story with a narrow walk up. I went with my neighbor who is recovering from a stroke, we had no clue before hand that we had to walk upstairs wasn't mentioned at all in the event flyer. When we arrived they asked for ID and took pictures of them. That was weird never had a Resturant take a picture of my ID was defiantly uncomfortable about that. Not to mention they didn't even try to explain why they needed to take a picture. The establishment is an old home that was created into a bar/Resturant. The event mentioned food which there was pancakes sausage bacon egg and cheese plus fruits. No drinks was included in the event. The utensils where still dirty and when asked for plastic utensils they didn't have. We tried to ask for hot water so we can rinse the utensils ourselves they said they don't have any hot water. We ordered mimosas the orange juice container had something green floating around and was filled less then half way. When we asked to replace it the employee quickly got his manager no clue why that was. But the manager was nice and helped us as fast as possible. The event was nice some of the drags could of done a better job and actually performing instead of just walk around lip singing certain parts. Two days after the event we received an email from the manager Jaime claiming we left with out paying our tab when we emailed her our copy of the receipt and bank statement, she emailed back stating we didn't leave a tip and wanted to ask why. I had never experienced anything like this but informed Jaime that we indeed left a tip and it was in cash twice when the drag demanded we give tip when two employees walked around collecting from all tables and when we payed our tab as we was leaving. Put me upstairs in back corner. The hostess was peculiar and struck me as condescending. They seated a few others. Went to them first. Gave one of them tableware. And then didn't want to come talk with me. Waited too long. So I left and Went to Santa Fe-- I'm not affiliated-- and they did a good job. I was seated quickly and got a server. Went Klondike Kate's for the first time last week. Fun atmosphere, good food, everything was good. I had the Buffalo Chicken Nachos (pictured) which were awesome (and large), others in my party had the Meatloaf and Mashed Potatoes, the Salmon with Asparagus and several Salads. I have been living in Delaware (Newark/Wilmington) area for about 3 years now and I wasn't aware of the Holiday Decor bar at Kates. I heard about it from a tiktok called FirstStateDestinations. After arriving for lunch today at 1:30pm to meet a friend. There was a 20 minute wait. Parking was only 2 dollars for 2 hours. Reasonable and close distance. Quickly got a drink at Santa Fe down the road and headed to our table. Ready even before we were, the place was beautiful, Christmas decor head to toe. Waiter was young and a little frazzled from the rush. I tried a gingerbread martini. It was too sweet for my taste but was alright. The crab bisque was as good as always, nice kick and seasoned with a good amount of crab. However it was just cold. And on a 33 degree day, hot soup was warm soup. Took a while to flag the waiter down to pay for the bill but all in all it was mediocre. I came for decor and festive cocktails. I got my insta pic and I am satisfied. read more

We had lunch today including a nice French Onion soup with the right amount of cheese and a great oniony soup base. A big pile of nachos with loads of cheese, jalapeno, beans and lettuce. Entrees included a turkey burger (too well done), pulled pork sandwich and a Reuben. Good bar food is as far as I go on the eats. Now drinks, check their Sunday bloody Mary bar, very cool! read more

I visited during restaurant week with 2 friends. We started off with the Brie in Puff pastry appetizer, because we are on a Brie kick after having the most amazing blackened Brie at BlackFinn in Charlotte. This brie could not compare to BlackFinn, but was still very, very good. It was creamy brie cheese spread with apricot preserves and wrapped in puff pastry baked with sliced almonds, served with strawberries, apples and grapes. Two of us both had the 3 course dinner for $28 which included Caribbean Grilled Scallops, Grilled jumbo scallops skewer over avocado, mango and arugula salad and finished with sweet balsamic, Horseradish Sirloin which was Grilled 8oz sirloin steak, topped with wild mushrooms in a horseradish cream sauce, served with slice roasted potatoes and asparagus, and Banana Chonga Ala mode for dessert. The other friend had the 2 course meal for $22 which was Sashimi Tuna, Black pepper and sugar grilled seared Ahi tuna served with julienne cucumbers and ginger salad, teriyaki sauce and soy sauce and Cider Pork Tenderloin, Grilled Pork tenderloin marinate in apple cider served over mashed potatoes and julienne vegetables topped with a caramelized onion sauce. The scallops were seared perfectly and the mango was ripe and juicy, but there was not enough balsamic. Our friend's ahi tuna was better, there was a lot more tuna, it was rare and melted in our mouths, and the sauce was amazing. The steak was cooked perfectly rare, but there was very little horseradish cream sauce at all, and we could not taste the horseradish. We actually forgot there was even supposed to be horseradish until we reread the menu later. The vegetables were crisp and seasoned well. Our friend liked his pork tenderloin. The Banana dessert was fantastic! It was unique and different, and much larger than we expected. It was almost like an eggroll, but it was filled with banana, cinnamon, ice cream and caramel and it was absolutely delicious! read more
