I visited during restaurant week with 2 friends. We started off with the Brie in Puff pastry appetizer, because we are on a Brie kick after having the most amazing blackened Brie at BlackFinn in Charlotte. This brie could not compare to BlackFinn, but was still very, very good. It was creamy brie cheese spread with apricot preserves and wrapped in puff pastry baked with sliced almonds, served with strawberries, apples and grapes. Two of us both had the 3 course dinner for $28 which included Caribbean Grilled Scallops, Grilled jumbo scallops skewer over avocado, mango and arugula salad and finished with sweet balsamic, Horseradish Sirloin which was Grilled 8oz sirloin steak, topped with wild mushrooms in a horseradish cream sauce, served with slice roasted potatoes and asparagus, and Banana Chonga Ala mode for dessert. The other friend had the 2 course meal for $22 which was Sashimi Tuna, Black pepper and sugar grilled seared Ahi tuna served with julienne cucumbers and ginger salad, teriyaki sauce and soy sauce and Cider Pork Tenderloin, Grilled Pork tenderloin marinate in apple cider served over mashed potatoes and julienne vegetables topped with a caramelized onion sauce. The scallops were seared perfectly and the mango was ripe and juicy, but there was not enough balsamic. Our friend's ahi tuna was better, there was a lot more tuna, it was rare and melted in our mouths, and the sauce was amazing. The steak was cooked perfectly rare, but there was very little horseradish cream sauce at all, and we could not taste the horseradish. We actually forgot there was even supposed to be horseradish until we reread the menu later. The vegetables were crisp and seasoned well. Our friend liked his pork tenderloin. The Banana dessert was fantastic! It was unique and different, and much larger than we expected. It was almost like an eggroll, but it was filled with banana, cinnamon, ice cream and caramel and it was absolutely delicious! read more

My boyfriend is a U of D grad. Pretty much since I met him he has spoken highly of the nachos, so when we spent the day in Newark coming here for lunch was a no brainer. The "small" nachos were huge!! They were perfect classic nachos, with cheese, chili and the works (lettuce, tomatoes, scallions, jalapeños, black olives, sour cream, salsa). We went on Memorial Day so the burgers were 1/2 priced, not sure if that's a Monday thing or not. Plus they had an extra menu of special burgers. From that special menu I got the Fried Cheese Burger, which was amazing. It had fried provolone, onion rings and a horseradish aioli sauce that was out of this world. I also got a classic margarita on the rocks that was awesome. The bf seemed to really love his Texas Burger. If we ever go back to Newark, I know we will definitely return to this institution. read more

Klondike Kate's is a classic local pub type restaurant with a bar. The food is generally typical of a pub. I got a Hawaiian burger with fries. The fries were a little bit cool but the hamburger was very hot and tasted good. For desert, I got chocolate cake with mousse filling and butter cream chocolate frosting, which was surprisingly good for a pub. The atmosphere is kind of local family oriented with a range of customers both young and old. Parking is free in one of the nearby lots if you get your parking ticket validated. I gave the restaurant a rating of a solid 3. As pub food goes, it was very good, but on the scale of all restaurants, it could be better. I got what I paid for, and since my burger was one of the specials, it was half price. read more

I have been living in Delaware (Newark/Wilmington) area for about 3 years now and I wasn't aware of the Holiday Decor bar at Kates. I heard about it from a tiktok called FirstStateDestinations. After arriving for lunch today at 1:30pm to meet a friend. There was a 20 minute wait. Parking was only 2 dollars for 2 hours. Reasonable and close distance. Quickly got a drink at Santa Fe down the road and headed to our table. Ready even before we were, the place was beautiful, Christmas decor head to toe. Waiter was young and a little frazzled from the rush. I tried a gingerbread martini. It was too sweet for my taste but was alright. The crab bisque was as good as always, nice kick and seasoned with a good amount of crab. However it was just cold. And on a 33 degree day, hot soup was warm soup. Took a while to flag the waiter down to pay for the bill but all in all it was mediocre. I came for decor and festive cocktails. I got my insta pic and I am satisfied. read more

Kate's was great and a laid back place until it started packing up at the end of 2005, now it must be worse for those turning 21 since the bars are clearing out on Main Street. I have organized a group event each of the last three years for 40 high school swimmers and their parents at Klondike Kate's. I worked with the manager Jaime each year. I cannot thank her and the the staff enough for setting up and executing the event flawlessly each year. The staff was awesome. The food was good and the atmosphere was perfect. The new management of this location has turned this place into an establishment that is trying way too hard and completely missing the mark. Today, I called to order the Thursday special - half off wings to go - like I usually do. I asked the restaurant if they were still offering half off wings, and they said they were. I placed an order to go. When I get to the restaurant, they tell me the total - $12. I hand them my card, they verify it, and then I realize, $12? I ask the host, and she lets me know that they don't do the specials to go anymore. She asks if I still want them, and I don't. I wanted half off. So the manager has to come out and void the transaction. I work in the restaurant business, and when things like this happen we usually just allow the customer to have the deal, since they were unaware. Especially if we changed something without notice. But the manager just took the food to the back. That is honestly ridiculous. So instead of making a sale with me, the wings will either go to the staff, or maybe someone else's plate! That's how cheap this new management seems to be. Honestly, this is just one example of the new management's depreciation of a place that used to be so great. read more

In my experiences Kate's has been one of the most consistent places to eat on main street in terms of both quality of food and service. Everything I have ordered off the menu has been good and the variety they offer spans a large range of pub foods. Can't go wrong with the nachos, wings, or Mustang Sally Salad. They renovated about a year ago though, and I think they took away their weekly specials, which is a huge disappointment. After about 7-8pm turns into a bar scene and can get very loud. At night there is dancing upstairs which can be pretty fun. Drinks are average price and can get cheap (and weak) shots. read more

My fiancé became upset with the lack of attention so we decided to leave. And to make matters worst we still weren't acknowledged as we walked past the hostess and out the door. I've always loved Kate's, and I love their new menu changes as well! I appreciate their move toward being a little more upscale without getting super expensive. The new decor looks great! Loved Kates until they started doing the $75 minimum tab per table. I went out with 1 friend and our tab was reasonable and then 2 hours after being there our waiter comes over with the check and says that we didn't reach the $75 minimum so we either will be charged a fee for the difference or would have to order food and drinks until we hit it. That's the craziest thing I've ever experienced. Why would they not have told us that before we sat down. I understand they need to make money but that's just unreasonable. The girl closing server last night 9/15/2020 with brownish black hair was absolutely terrible. Worst attitude I've ever seen on a waitress. Definitely needs an attitude adjustment & some more training. I was on Main Street in Newark, DE for business and was completely surrounded by plenty of options for lunch. I have been to Kate's before but it has been quite a little while. Once I saw a very welcoming A-frame sign reading 1/2 price wings, I finalized my decision. Guerilla marketing at its finest! Hey, I had full intentions of going salad but who can pass up a good deal? This place was cranking during the lunch hour. The outside patio as well as the inside seating areas were full. I saw an open seat at the bar, so off I went. I had a great view of a large HD TV (ESPN) on the left hand wall. The only drawback here was that the bar stool did not compliment the counter at all. Listen, I am no Shawn Bradley, but the stools were more than a tad too low for the much higher seated counter. I made a comment to the bartender about this and he informed me that it certainly was not the first time he heard that. Looking around at the other guests at the bar, it really was quite silly looking. Other than wearing a Patriots hat (guess it could have been worse), the bartender was awesome. He was super friendly towards his customers and didn't miss a beat with the drink refills. So surprise, I went with the half price wings. They were solid and quite reminiscent of those that you would find at your local Hooters. They were heavily breaded but not drenched in sauce like you find at H's. The accompanying blue cheese was a little bit too runny though. This would have been a solid four stars from me if it wasn't for the bar stools. I just can't get over how a mainstay like Kate's can get away with this. With that being said, I do like Kate's and look forward to my next visit to the UD area. read more

Came for lunch while it was really nice outside so we sat on their large outdoor deck. They had some really good happy hour specials from 3-7 I think but we came closer to 2:30. The food is pretty worthless, there are much better places to eat on Main Street. The real pull for this place is the dreaded 80s Night. If a bar is holding itself up with that crutch its time to put it out of its misery. The bouncers are meat-heads and looking to pile on in the event of any misbehaving. I just want to start off by saying that this place's target audience (drunk college kids) probably won't be reading this review and so maybe I won't change too many minds. But my god is this place awful. The first time I went here, a friend at UD said it was quick and the food was decent, so I ordered a burger. I know what you're thinking - "how can you mess up a burger?" Well, I don't have an answer for that. The best word I can think of is "soggy" - the bun, the meat, the lettuce and tomatoes. I'm shuddering just thinking about it. But hey, maybe just stay away from the meat? Going off the recommendation and willing to forgive a fluke, I tried again this past week and ordered a chicken caesar wrap. Now, this next part is going to be a little more subjective than the burger part, but everything was WRONG. Not "slightly off" or "almost there," flat out BAD. I love a good wrap, and this was not one. I only wish that chicken could come back to life just to peck whoever made that wrap. The texture reminded me of oysters (when unexpected, it feels like you just ate a loogie), and the caesar dressing was closer to vinegar than dressing. The lettuce was consistently brown and the tomatoes were probably rerouted somewhere during shipping because they tasted weeks old. Another bad experience, and I've given up. I'm honestly shocked that this place has so many positive reviews, although they do seem to all focus on the price. If you really need a cheap meal, there's a trove of simple restaurants all down the street, so skip this hole. The guards are more strict at this bar than any other. And the upstairs floor will collapse one day. Idk how I didn't yet. Every time you go you can feel the floors move when people dance upstairs. But it is very fun. Mainly for fresh 21 year olds. Not an 26+ bar imo. read more

YUM! The wings here are deeeeeelicious. Everytime I go, my family asks me to bring some home they taste good even as leftovers. The crab bisque is also super thick, flavorful and creamy - pretty filling and tastes like I'm at a high end seafood restaurant. The atmosphere is very divey and chill, esp since its on a college campus. My one complaint is when I last went, there were at least 5 wasps surrounding me and my meal at all times. I know this probably isn't their fault but I've also never experienced this anywhere else despite sitting outdoors at various restaurants in the summer/spring time. A college town bar with a good mix of the older crowd that just wants to enjoy a beer. Beers are rotated regularly, and there are good staple beers (Blue Moon, etc.) that remain perennially on tap. Menu is about average for what you expect of a pub. Best days are when Patty is bartending. I love Klondike Kate's! Every time my parents or boyfriend comes up to visit we always eat here. Love the nachos- the Inner Harbor is our favorite! If you're looking for a great salad, the Pear Way to Heaven is the best. I'm a little upset that the turkey burger with Brie and cranberry wasn't on the menu the last two times I went since it was my favorite burger by far :( Also, last time we went here we got an order of the mild wings and they either got the order wrong or the mild wings are far from mild. I give this bar three stars because of all of my fond memories when I attended the University of Delaware. As a bar, this place rocks! That being said, I visited this restaurant on a Saturday afternoon and had the pleasure of sitting outside. After dinner at a nearby restaurant we decided to take a walk along Main Street, through the University of Delaware campus, and found ourselves at the corner of Main and Choate Streets, staring at the three-story building with green awnings. The scent of beer was in the air, and the crowds of people seemed lively, so we found a table outside on the patio to enjoy a brew and watch the parade of people up and down Main Street. Klondike Kate's seems to be THE local hangout for the University of Delaware college crowd, and the pick-up action was hot & heavy even for a mid-week summer's night. This is where the Jersey Shore frat boys are busy trying to impress the Atlantic Coast cuties, and everyone is having a good time. Yo! My business partner and I ordered a couple of drinks (I got talked into getting the 20 ounce Arrogant Bastard *harrumph*), and we had some great laughs watching the fun. The beer menu has a lot of the standards plus Dogfish Head, Magic Hat, and a tasty little thing called Victory Golden Monkey. My buddy stuck to the red wines, and said he looked much more sophisticated sipping on a Merlot than me with a frosty mug of beer. As the evening wore on we decided to order a small plate of nachos which were loaded with everything but the kitchen sink, and absolutely HUGE. We didn't try any of their other food, but the servers were busy running trays of sandwiches, burgers, appetizers, salads, pizzas, and ribs to the nearby tables. Klondike Kate's looks like a nice place to eat earlier in the evening, or perhaps for a weekend lunch, but later at night the mood shifts to the college crowd. read more

As a place to eat, Kate's is pretty good if you can eat outside. Inside is dark and always seemed kind of dirty. As a bar, this place is as over-rated as any I've ever been. The lack of competition and early last call allow Kate's to have enourmous lines, impersonal bartenders, and the bouncers are huge assholes (read: losers who have no friends so try to get into fights with drunk nerdy students at the bar to impress other bouncers). Oh, and if you do get inside, the crowd around the bar is brutal, as is moving from room to room. Is 80s night an event if it's every night?? Couldn't they have built apartments here instead of at the Balloon? They salvage 2 stars for $2 22oz bud/bud light bottles and the decent scenery (skirts) outside when the weather's nice. read more

Can you say yum and do the happy dance at the same time. That was the reaction that I had at my cousins wedding reception at Historic Sinking Springs Herb Farm that was catered by Klondike Kates. Not only was the food absolutely phenomenal the service and effort the staff put into their part of the wedding was outstanding. Much thanks to Lizette, Aubrey, and John the reception was a smashing success. Actually my experience started the night before the wedding when we were setting up the tables in the loft of the barn. The three staff members showed up the night before to get everything ready which they did with much care and attention to detail. I noted they paid special attention to the fact the reception was in a barn which created issues that they dealt with expertly. All through the setup process with smiles and courtesy posturing their work alongside of our activities to get their part setup. It should be mentioned that this included maneuvering single-file stairs to the second level of the barn. The day of the wedding they were on-time and efficiently got the remainder of their setup accomplished. The meal had an absolutely wonderful surprise. Really the surprise upstaged the chicken, roast beef, and barbeque. All of these were delightful and considering we were out in the middle of absolutely no civilization I was impressed that each of these were succulent, moist, and ready for devouring. The buffet provided bread for sandwiches or your choice of a dinner roll could make a plate if you like. All the accompanying vegetables and potatoes were very hot and fresh. All of it was absolutely wonderful. The selection of venue, caterer, and the theme was geared towards nontraditional. So instead of cake they had several most wonderful pies that were to die for. I had the pumpkin pie that hit all the flavors of fall, was moist, delicately placed on a delightful crust. None of these fine foods really kept up with the surprise. It was a butternut squash soup that really held a most excellent flavor. Providing both a perfect warmth that reminded you of a warm blanket (I am from Florida and was cold) with the creamy buttery texture of a pureed mouthwatering squash soup with a hint of sweetness. This is the kind of soup that you cannot stop eating until it all gone. I was told that this was prepared especially for the bride and groom. What a wonderful tribute to have such a fine dish presented to newlyweds. Eating this way begs me to schedule another trip to the cold frigid north. read more

WIth that said I really like Klondike Kate's My girlfriend is a grad student at UD so being a good BF I come down and pay here a surprise visit. Now I grew up in DE and spent many nights on main st. So I know KK can be a douche magnet. OK enough about me let get to the nitty gritty. KK is a joint on Main Street in Newark DE in the middle of the UD campus. I've been there 3-4 times and every time I've had a good time. The service has always been great. The servers have always been nice and attentive as well as well informed about the specials and menu. They do have great specials like half priced sandwiches or half priced nachos. The food is decent, it is bar food like sandwiches burgers, nachos, and so on. But like I said the food is decent. It's tasty flavorful and I've never left unsatisfied. I've had the burgers, the burger patty is smaller than the bun!! That's kinda of a turn off. As well as the french dip delicious. And the portions are a nice size. As a man who usually cleans his plate I've actually left KK with to go boxes!! All in all KK is a decent place with decent food with great specials!! read more

I have been coming to this place for like 3 years and it seems like their menu is becoming less and less inclusive to pescatarians, vegetarians and vegans. If you have any dietary restrictions I suggest going to Homegrown or Grain which are also on main street. read more

I've been here a few times over the years, but, I was very disappointed today. Three of us were there for brunch. Two of us ordered drinks (a Mimosa and a Bloody Mary). The drinks were watery, which is fine, if you're catering to the already drunk college crowd who don't know the difference, but, not when you're making drinks for adults. The Bloody Mary tasted of water, tomato, and Old Bay. It was not impressive at all. The brunch fare was okay. The potatoes were dry, and the sausage was overcooked. Once upon a time, Kate's was a staple for Newark. It was great pub food at reasonable prices. We would go for specials all the time including 1/2 burger night, wing night, etc. Over the past few years, no restaurant has declined more in terms of the quality of food. The burgers used to be the kind of ground beef that needed only salt & pepper. Now they've seemingly gone to a bland pre-made patty. Salads used to be a mountain of flavorful veggies & meat but I left hungry the last time I ordered a ~ $13-$15 salad. I also noticed a decline in service which doesn't bother me when I'm getting great food. I've since banned Kate's and won't look back. read more
