My first impressions when I walk in was this place needs more light. The table by the door had pancakes which looked like the size if a dinner plate. The place was full which was a good sign. I ordered the Denver omelette with fruit. I found it to be cold. I'n sure it was three eggs but I think they were from a small hen based on the size of the serving. Nice atmosphere but I was disappointed with the food. The price was reasonable. 17.00 which includes the substitution for fruit. Service has really gone to hell in this place. Their new policy is only 1 refill on a cup of coffee. But they don't communicate that. They just ignore you when you try to flag down the waitress holding up your coffee cup. I offered to pay for refills. I was still denied. They also will no longer take your credit card to process your payment - you have to walk up to the counter to pay at the cash register. So I no longer eat here. read more

I met two good friends for a late breakfast here on Sunday. It was our third "meetup" here in 10 years. We each had a "full stack of pancakes" - two of us devoured blueberry pancakes (myself included), and one of us devoured strawberry pancakes. We all agreed that this is our favorite place for breakfast: A full menu of breakfast options prepared as ordered. The wait staff are very friendly and available. Ample seating (off peak hours) and free packing in back. (Metered parking in front, on both sides of the street, and free on Sundays.) We sat there for almost two hours catching up on news in our lives. No one encouraging us to free up our table or pay our check ASAP. We came for breakfast and we were pretty unimpressed. Our server was coughing a little and looked a little sick and rubbed her face and then grabbed my wifes food and brought it over. 815am on a Monday - was in the area looking for a breakfast before work. From the outside, looked like a good option. Inside however, is stuck in time - somewhere late 80's early 90's? Clean but old and dark. I don't know if the lights were partially off or it's just dim in there, but the atmosphere did not help to wake anyone up. Sign said - seat yourself, so I did at a small table near the front. The waitress came over and said, "You can sit anywhere you'd like.". I paused, confused since I was already sitting at a table I chose....then asked if I needed to move somewhere else. She said no, and left me the menu. Confusing. Standard Greek diner style breakfast offerings. I chose a spinach, feta, and tomato omelet with sourdough toast and home fries. Side of kielbasa sausage - with a coffee. The coffee was somewhere between warm and hot and about 3/4 of a mug. Not a big deal figuring frequent refills except she never returned after bringing my food. The omelet was cooked fine - but somehow not hot? There was only one other table so I can't imagine the food sat long. The eggs has zero seasoning. There was also no salt and pepper on the tables and since she never came back (or was even in view to wave down) - I just used hot sauce I saw on a different table. No ketchup was provided either. The bread was barely toast and the home fries were tasty - but not hot. While eating, a guy (waiter? manager?) was behind their counter area arguing with someone on his cell speaker phone. There were two people sitting at the counter - but they weren't being served. The guy at the counter was having some animated conversation with the manager (when he finally hung up his call), lecturing him on some thing or another. The manager looked uncomfortable and stuck in the conversation. Meanwhile, the restaurant landline phone was ringing off the hook, loud, with no one even hinting that they would pick it up. Call after call, going what sounded like an old school voicemail machine on speaker! Waitress finally returns - I ask for water and the check. Water comes in a 4oz juice glass with ice (shot of water) and she delivers the bill. I had her my card and she says I have to pay at the register on the way out. The way out, is two steps behind me through the front door. Instead, I have to take my own bill to the register and wait for the manager and that guy to have a break in the conversation to pay. The whole experience was strange and uncomfortable. The food was fine but not nearly a reason to return. Cost with tip was over $30 for 2 egg omelet, toast, home fries, and 3/4 cup of coffee, no refill. There are just better options for the same or less money. read more

Pretty basic old fashioned Greek diner. No longer cheap though. And if you get more than 3 refills of coffee they will charge you for another cup. Which I have never seen in a diner. In my case, I had a few partial refills just to heat it up. Not 2 or 3 full cups. They did not tell me about the extra charge until after they brought it, so I told them to take it back. (They even brought the extra bill right away.) So for the price of a cup (cost of about 25 cents) of coffee they lost a customer. read more

I'm from the Waltham area and normally hit up Wilson's diner but today I found myself in Wellsley Ma and to my surprise, I found the best breakfast and amazing seasoned potatoes. Well done ! Maugus Restaurant! Saturday Lunch was delicious. We stoped in and were very pleased with everything. The food came out quickly. It was all very well made. I had the cheeseburger club and my wife had a turkey wrap. Both were great and we enjoyed them. So happy I found such a cute diner in Wellesley! There is a good amount of seating inside but still has that cozy, small diner feel. Prices are very low and affordable. Most of the egg dishes came with potatoes. Their potatoes are amazing! Perfectly seasoned and honestly the star of the meal for me. We ordered: Greek Feta Omelette: 4/5 my friend loved it. Came with toast and potatoes. Eggs Benedict: 4/5 very good for the price of $10.95. It also came with toast and potatoes and left me so full. Buttermilk Pancakes: 5/5 yumm 3 huge fluffy pancakes. Easily top three words service experiences I have had in my entire life. After sitting our waitress from hell took our drink orders and left. No biggie this is normal. She comes back and for whatever reason the cranberry juice was extremely sour which my seven year old did not like so I explained and asked for or age juice instead. She then gave me and my child one of the nastiest looks I had ever seen which I thought was going to possibly pop her Botox injected face. Moving along, she came bad with the same terrible attitude to take our order this time leaving for over half hour. We only ordered French toast and pancakes!! Meanwhile people were coming in with other waiters, getting food, eating and paying all while we sat and waited. Finally I asked a much nicer waitress passing by if she could get our match made in hell WHO by the way was at the counter talking this whole time never checking in once. She finally brought the food for just my daughter 45 mins later tossing it on table saying "let's at least get her started". 45 mins for a kids grilled cheese. While bringing the rest we noticed something missing which my wife mentioned and was replied to with "I only have two hands!" Her and my wife got into a back and forth. She left for us to never see her again and some random new trainee come over while eating with the bill (I guess that means we're done ordering). The whole time again she stayed at the counter talking and not catering to any of her tables. All while an older lady busted her butt running around back and forth getting her people in and out. Oh yeah the whole time we sat and watched the kitchen while we waited we saw the dish washer not wash dishes in a sick but instead he had a bucket of water and a wash cloth. He would take a dirty dish wash it inside the mini bucket and put it out to dry. He did this too about 100 dishes without cleaning the water which at that point was black. Delicious huh!?!? The food wasn't good. The service was from hell. The prices were overpriced. All in all one of the easiest one star ratings of all time. read more

It's hard to please one of the most educated, well-traveled, and well-financed neighborhoods in the country. To get 5 stars around here you pretty much have to grovel to your clientele while serving universally delicious food. I think the fact that they don't grovel here is reflected in the lack of 5 star average for the BEST (only?) breakfast joint in the area. This is a Greek diner. They're run by Greeks. They serve Greek sausage, mousaka, and spanikopita. But people come here for the blueberry pancakes and eggs over easy with home fries. Local's tip: Order the scali /skah-lee/ bread for the simple reason that you can't order scali bread in most of the world. read more

I eat a lot of french toast... to the point where I practically wear powdered sugar and sticky syrup for make-up. I know what's good vs. bad. Unfortunately, Maugus's french toast was bad. There were a few types to choose from: challah, texas, or cinnamon walnut. The challah tasted like regular white bread and reminded me of low-quality breakfast at IHOP. French toast should be fluffy, but this was so flattened that I honestly think the chef sat on it beforehand. The side of plain bacon for $1 didn't help either. Bottom line: you get what you pay for. In terms of service, the waitress did her job but was too talkative. I didn't finish my dish and she called me out on that! Not the polite "oh, is something wrong with your dish?" but the crass, "oh come on, can't you finish those last few bites?" My friend and I were in a private conversation and the waitress blurted out, "what kind of question is that!?" To be fair, my friend did ask a dumb question, but the comment was uncalled for. read more

Went with a large group a couple weeks back, and I was impressed at how smoothly things went as I worried beforehand that they might not be able to accommodate ~20 people well. I ordered chocolate chip pancakes, and they were huge! I got three large fluffy pancakes that was more than enough for one meal, so I had one pancake leftover to take home. I have an allergy to gluten. This restaurant is so conscious and careful about this. They even remind me if I forget to mention it each time I am there. Our family has been going to Maugus for four generations dating back to the fifties. Maugus is family owned and they remember everyone's name too. Food was great, but if the service is worse than the service you receive in an Old Country Buffet (aka NONE), it isn't worth it. We sat there for about 17 minutes without even being greeted- we ended up getting our own menus and flagging down a waiter. It took 45 minutes for my cousin to get a diet coke after she had ordered it three times, and an hour to receive our food. Their only excuse was that "we're busy". I'm sorry, but you are a DINER. If you cannot handle TEN tables, you should not even be in business, this is YOUR JOB. Not only was the service extremely slow, there was hundred of dirty dishes PILED HIGH on the counter next to a patron who was eating their food, how disgusting... CLEAN UP. No one wants to be eating when there are dirty dishes lying around. I hope they get their sh*t together soon, or this place is going to burn down. read more

What is there not to love about this place. Its been here forever and it remains consistent with great breakfast and service. Nothing fancy about this place but there is no where else in town were you can get huge fluffy pancakes, toast and home fries for under $12! This has always been a hang out for high schoolers before taking the SATs and townies at heart. I wish I could give this place a zero star rating. I just got a ham egg and cheese sandwich to go that came on a bagel covered in mold and the ham looked like it was cooked in motor oil. You know when puddles on the street get the shiny green streaks from cars leaking oil? That's what the ham looked like. I ate half the sandwich before I noticed so, if I die, tell my family I love them. I'm debating calling the board of health because 2/3 components of my sandwich were rotten. Who knows how old the egg was. If this place has the balls to serve rotten ham and moldy fuzz bagels who knows what kind of nasty stuff they are hiding in their omelets. read more
