Fat Bruce's is two, two, two shops in one (cool, I inserted my dated cultural reference on the first line of my review). For those of you looking to get your caffeine buzz on, Fat Bruce's is a decent coffee shop for small town Wisconsin. They dropped some serious coin to renovate the interior of the 19th century building housing this establishment. There is plenty of seating, a strong, password-protected wi-fi signal and a wide assortment of pastries to nosh on. The coffee shop roasts its own coffee on site in small batches and ol' Fat Bruce serves up a mean cup of joe. My oatmeal and brown sugar muffin top was a disappointment - it was the bastard child of an illicit union between a scone and muffin (a scuffin?) that was extremely spongy and far too sweet. But the packed display case is home to a wide assortment of tempting pastries and I am more than willing to sample those confections until I find an acceptable match to the wonderful coffee I consumed. Where Fat Bruce's really brings the thunder is the sandwich side of the operation. I recently ordered a Berlin Club Panini (Ham, Turkey, Swiss , bacon, lettuce and tomatoes) to go. For my panini order, there were several homemade bread options that change from day-to-day. I wisely selected the ciabatta option. The bread was out-of-the-oven fresh, flavorful and provided great textural contrast. It certainly gets my bread-head seal of approval. Also drawing raves was the thick cut, succulent slices of turkey, oven roasted on site. This fantastic sandwich was a tremendous value at $6.99. The kettle chips were a nice added touch. Since I ordered the sandwich to go, they placed those chips in a small plastic bag so they stayed crunchy next to the moist sandwich and pickle spear. We were not expecting much when we stopped here last week on our way to golf, but were we surprised! Our meal was so good! We started with the Pretzel rolls - with two different mustards and a caramel sauce. All three sauces were very good and went perfectly with the pretzel bites. For such a cheap price, it was very filling and delicious. We ordered the Large Meats Pizza - Red sauce base with sausage, pepperoni, bacon, ham. What made this pizza so good to us was the crust - a little burned but nice and flaky. One of the best pizzas we've ever had. If the pretzel rolls hadn't filled us up, we would have been able to finish the whole pizza. They also had a dessert window where they had home made cookies and brownies - all looked wonderful, but we were too full to try. The staff was very nice and even came over twice to see how everything was. Unfortunately, I doubt I will ever be in the area again, but if we were, I would stop here in a heartbeat! read more

The best beer/bar in the area. By far. Traveling with co-workers can be a bear, and trying to align all of their needs/wants and mental conditions is tough. I really didn't care if anyone else came along with me this night because I just needed a beer. We initially sat on the restaurant side while my fellow co-workers complained about this, that, and everything else that the place wasn't. If you don't want something remotely different, then you probably shouldn't travel with me (they knew this ahead of time). Given that this part of Wisconsin is fairly rural, its tough to find a decent beer, and food that isn't crap. This place saves the area from being written off of my "places to travel" checklist that I never wrote nor intend to. The food looked good from what I can see, with one guy saying something about "best pizza he'd had in a while" or something like that. They boring group of that party dispersed, and I moved up to the bar. It definitely helps having a nice looking face behind the bar, but when she can sling beer well, then you've got yourself a keeper. She took care of us for time we spent at the bar talking all night, and having to put up with us being indecisive, and just plain picky. Stopped by this brewery during our weekend stay at Green Lake, and I'm so glad we found this gem. We tried three of their beers: a citrus IPA, an APA, and a blonde. All were awesome, which is very rare to find in a brewery. We ended up getting a growler of the IPA to go and a 6-pack of the blonde. The brewer/owner was right there serving beer on a weekend evening and he was very friendly, as was the rest of the staff. The live music was great. The place just had a really homey, friendly vibe to it. I liked the beer so much I forgot to mention the food - the pizza was also great. I wish this place was closer to Chicago, but we'll definitely be back. read more

A-maz-ing! Great atmosphere, live music, great mix of oven grilled pizza. But let's pause for the delicious prime rib. It's very rare for a brewery to deliver a perfect prime rib at least 3 inches thick and medium rare. You've got to wait till 5pm to get the prime rib, but well worth the wait. The wait staff is great and this is a great place for dinner or a refreshing flight of beers. read more

I had the pleasure of visiting Ripon for the first time ever. Firstly, my mission was to visit the Rippin' Good cookie factory outlet (worth a stop!) and was so charmed that I figured I'd explore the town and have an early lunch. A search on Yelp found me Fat Bruce's. What a find! Fat Bruce's is a coffee shop/bakery/sandwich shop. One half is the coffee shop and bakery, the other is the sandwich shop. Bright and airy, its situated in a renovated late 19th century building. Ample seating, free Wi-Fi and on street parking. I did not sample the bakery or coffee, so this review is based on the sandwich half of the business. What impressed me the most was the quality and freshness of the food!!! I has the Welsh Beef sandwich on focaccia with a side of veggies, along with an iced tea. Everything is made here and it shows. The bread was fresh and soft, you could tell it wasn't loaded with preservatives or sitting around getting stale. The side of veggies ( baby carrots and broccoli) were clearly fresh, not dried out and nasty like some places try to serve, and come with a small side of ranch. The sandwich had a generous stack of roast beef with Monterey Jack and Gorgonzola cheese. It was perfectly grilled and the cheese was nice and melty. Came with a side of dipping sauce that was the perfect compliment. Really wish I would have taken a picture, as it looked as yummy as it tasted. The iced tea was fresh brewed and perfectly sweet ( they also have unsweetened). Really wish this place was a little closer, as I'd love to explore their menu more. Excellent sandwiches, delicious soup, good bakery and tasty coffee. I live down the street from Fat Bruce's and dine here frequently. I have yet to have a bad meal here. They roast their own coffee and it's quite good. I recommend the welsch beef sandwich or the Coulee salad, although the specials of the day never disappoint. read more

The pizza looked good but was in the mood for a sandwich. We ordered Chicken Toga. It is listed with romaine lettuce, tomatoes and provalon & asiago cheese with grilled chicken breast. What was served was a huge disappointment. 3 tiny strips of processed chicken from a precooked frozen bag. Slice of provolone and that's it. Knuth Brewing in Ripon WI - GOOD Food, GOOD Service and on the day we were there good polka music. My husband said his sandwich was very good and I had a personal pizza and side salad....also very good. The only down fall is they don't give you a paper receipt. When we asked for our bill.....one staff member stated we already paid and we said No.....you took our food order but because we plan to have drinks they asked if we wanted to start a tab....we said yes. We could have just walked away without paying but we are not like that. So the girl told another staff member who than came up and said we owed......X amount. I questioned that total....as I had added in my head items we ordered and of course we did not know the price of drinks, so I asked what they were....and my figures still didn't come to what the staff member quoted. She said she would check again....and came back with a total even more then quoted prior. Staff member then came over with her tablet....did not let us look at it to confirm items purchased, just went through it - for some reason another drink was added. For the most part it was a good place but we DID NOT LIKE THEY DON'T GIVE YOU A PAPER RECEIPT. So we would suggest keeping track of what you spend.....seeing how you are supposed to take their word as to what you OWE them. I also question that staff don't seem to know what is going on when it comes to payment.....which is not good for business if you under charge (not charging for food & drink) or over charging customer. read more

I absolutely adore this place. The coffee is perfect, they offer plenty of fun drinks, and options for those of us who can't have dairy. I haven't indulged in their pastries yet, but they look yummy! Their food is also very good. I especially like the quinoa bowl. I make a lot of dishes at home with qunioa, and theirs is perhaps the best quinoa I have ever had. Flavorful and delicious, yet light! The atmosphere is festive and cosy. The only real complaint I have is about the hours...seems like fat bruces is rarely open :/ read more

Absolutely visit Knuth's when in Ripon. If our once-a-week out to eat stop isn't J's it's Knuth's. Our kids love any kind of pizza here (especially "Dave's Fave" or BBQ Chicken when it's on sale). The coulee salad is our favorite. Pretzel bites are yummy. Our kids love that they can have a lemon, cucumber or even apples on occasion in their water. Not only is this a local favorite but it should be a favorite for everyone. First and foremost the beers are fantastic. David does a great citra spice IPA and coffee stout. But the beers aren't only the thing you should try. The wood fired pizza, salads, and sandwiches are all superb. My wife and I's personal favorites are the Thai pizza, hot wings, Cobb salad, and the pretzel bites. If you like spicy salsa be sure to try some of that as well. The atmosphere is very laid back and trendy. It's worth an hour drive if you are out of town. read more

As a student attending Ripon College I find Knuth's to be a fantastic no brainer when it comes to affordable delicious food! I mean granted it's not as cheap as say McDonald's, but when it comes to good quality food, kind service, wonderful atmosphere, amongst other things it couldn't be better! My personal favorite is the Meat and Cheese Board, which is served on a fantastic Wisconsin shaped cutting board. The establishment has both sit down and counter service where you can get takeout, which is very convenient! The restaurant overall has a fun rustic decor with interesting art and a wonderful building layout. Every time I've been to this restaurant my expectations have been exceeded, and being in the middle of downtown Ripon the location is charming and inviting. read more

I grew up in Ripon. Small picturesque Wisconsin town. Home back then to Speed Queen Washers & Dryers, Rippin' Good Cookies and Birthplace of the Republican Party. So be it. Now this little sandwich shop and bakery is fairly new to Main Street (yes Ripon has a Main St.) and it is great, I say great! They make some quality stuff and are super nice. The salads are huge and made to order. The sandwiches--fresh roasted meats, fresh baked breads and huge and tasty. Good cookies and more! I would say it is the best place to go for lunch in Ripon and I have tried all the options in my years, so if you are passing through east central Wisconsin, perhaps on your way from Fond Du Lac to La Crosse, Fat Bruce's is a super place to stop and grab a bite. read more
