Heard about the big burgers and big crunchy onion rings so we decided to make the drive. The jalapeño cream cheese with bacon burger was so big I couldn't finish it. Maybe because I was finishing the onion rings that came the burger platter. This was the 1/2 pound burger which I'm pretty sure is after cooking! The pie selection was crazy decadent. We decided have two to go: Black Forest; and Doctor's Office. Stopped for an early Sunday evening dinner. Food was mediocre except for over cooked onion rings (bitter) and peanut butter pie that was anything but fresh. The meringue was stiff and stale and the crust was greasy so I won't stop there again. read more

Hico was our first stop on a three day road trip to many a small town Texas. The Koffee Kup is a regular in Texas Monthly ("40 Best Small Town Cafes" and "50 Best Burgers") so we figured since it was en route to Dr Pepper Texas we might as well give it a shot. I rocked the award winning Jalapeno Cream Cheese Burger, a half pound beast dripping with tangy cream cheese and fresh jalapenos on a homemade bun. There were bites of pure juicy ground beef indulgence, but sometimes it was just okay. That inconsistency is probably why there were no signs showing where it ranked in Texas Monthly's list (41 in case you're wondering). But don't get me wrong, still a respectable choice and well worth the stomach space. The onion rings were unique too, more like a chicken fried onion than your traditional greasy battered strings, and went perfectly with the Dublin Dr Pepper they had on tap. Mmmm ... Dublin Dr Pepper. Makes me proud to be a Texan. There isn't much else to do in Hico besides cow tipping I'd imagine, so make your trip memorable by stopping at the Koffee Kup. I don't think I've met a nicer bunch of people in my whole life, and fortunately, they know how to make some quality grub. read more

Stopped in for launch headed back to Houston after being in Lubbock for the weekend. The food was typical diner food that you can find across Texas and any small town. To start, we sat down to a dirty table that we had to request be cleaned. That's okay. We can deal with that. I had the chicken fried steak, nicely fried but very bland. The potatoes were good. My husband had a ribeye with onion rings. The ribeye wasn't a very good cut, but that's to be expected at $16. The onion rings were also bland. Hubby said the black-eyed peas were good. The crust on my strawberry pie was great but overall the pie was so-so. Strawberries in jello with whipped cream. Husband had the banana blueberry which he said was okay. This review is based solely on the pie. We stopped in on a Wednesday afternoon while driving through Hico. The wife and I shared a piece of chocolate meringue. Maybe we got it on an off day or it had been stored too long, but the pie was not good. The crust was so hard that it was difficult to cut with a fork, the filling was more of a chocolate pudding than the fudgy consistency it should be, and the meringue was hard and chewy. Hopefully we just got a bad one, but it was a major disappointment, and we won't stop here again. read more

First time patron, won't be back. I've had the pies before and those are good. We waited over an hour for burgers and I had to flag our waitress down to get more water and coffee. Not once did she check on us without having to either get a bus boy to get her, or waving her down. The people next to us waited an hour for a sandwich and a bloody burger. I took my daughter to the restroom and the people next to us had to make sure the bus boy didn't clear our table of untouched food. The service was just bad. The food was forgettable at best. Stopped in for quick breakfast while passing through town, upon enter no one was around to seat us, after a couple of minutes I found someone in the Kitchen to help us. I ordered the Breakfast Biscuit with bacon and egg, my wife requested a breakfast burrito, my biscuit so dry it feel apart after two bits and the eggs we over cooked. My wife's was okay. Breakfast was OK. Scramble eggs were not fluffy. 3 big thick pieces of bacon that were cold. The hash browns were good and hot and well browned. The biscuits were big and very delicate, almost cake like. Coffee was good and hot. I will go back and try lunch. Maybe that would be better. read more

My wife and I were on a motorcycle trip and had skipped breakfast so we stopped in about 10:00 a.m. on Oct 17th. There were only about 10-12 people dining. There were at least 2 waitresses but it still took 10 minutes for our order to be taken. My wife had a bacon/cheese omelet and I had scrambled eggs, bacon and a biscuit/gravy. During the 20 minutes or more that we waited for our food, we heard a lady in an adjacent booth tell the waitress that she ordered 2 eggs, not just 1. We noticed that it took about 10 minutes for her to get her other egg. Then we heard the waitress tell a gentleman at a nearby table that she didn't charge him for something because she had forgotten to get it to him. I'm not complaining for those people, just making a point about the wait staff. After about 20 minutes or more, we were talking about leaving when our food arrived. My wife said her omelet was good but wasn't hot. Just warm. My eggs were not scrambled but were folded. There is a difference. My bacon was just shy of being burned, my biscuit was dry but the worst thing was the gravy. It was obviously an instant style and not homemade and wasn't warm at all. Room temperature gravy. It was disgusting! We left without finishing our meal and vowed to wait until we got to Hamilton next time. Bad service + bad food = never again. read more

Was looking forward to an old fashioned chicken fried steak, they brought out a beautiful golden chicken fry that about the size of my cows watering trough, tasted like it had been soaking in it for days too! About one third if it was burned ( under that beautiful golden crust),should have just got a piece of pie. Don't take cards either. read more

Worst restaurant in human history. Ok, I get it the whole small town diner local scene. Pies, locals, sherrif, gravy on everything, in fact I like these places. However, piss on service combined with prison entrees sucks no matter how quaint the atmosphere. Our server, expressed her disgust for her job on her face,attitude, and service. She forgot to put in our appetizer, 20 min later we had to ask a different server if it was ready. Our og server brought the COLD onion rings promptly to our table...yay Another 25 minutes goes by without our dirty dishes taken away. Then in a 2 person fashion our hamburgers arrive as they clean the table. Hamburgers were grissley and none of us finished and nausea was soon to follow. Even the chicken fried steak, a small town diner staple tasted like shit!! WTF!?!? Credit card machines being foreign and apparantly not a popular form of payment in this town were of course not accepted. Of course, it's only 2010, why the hell would they accept credit card at this tourist stop? And no they don't accept wompum, I know I was shocked too. Was rudely informed "we don't take plastic" when I went to pay, and when I asked if there was an ATM nearby all I got was an offhanded response of "foyer." I had heard a lot about this place from Jodie Dean on KLUV radio. Since I was going through, I had to stop. I was there for breakfast and ordered a routine scramble with bacon, hashbrowns and biscuits. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either -- although the biscuits were good. I ordered a piece of apple pie to go and ate it when I got home. Now that was great pie. Wonderful crust and the apples were done clear through. We have driven past this place for years on our road trips and saw cars surrounding the building. We finally pulled in on the way home Easter Sunday. The chicken fried chicken was beautiful, but unseasoned. The ham was ok. The best part was the pineapple-jalapeno sauce, but that wasn't enough to carry the meal. The banana blueberry pie was a huge disappointment. The whipped cream was like butyl and the blueberries were a sad goo tossed on top. And....glad we had cash on us, because they don't take a card. ZERO STARS I don't understand what the hype is about this place. Was there this afternoon. Ordered Chili. Was served a bowl of grease. They cooked the chopped meat and drained none of the fat. It all went right into the bowl and looked like grease soup. One bite and I was done, just pushed it away. I don't understand what it is about this place that even makes it noteworthy. They serve chicken-fried-everything. Then they give you a carb veg, side of soup (also loaded with grease), that disgusting white gravy and then a corn muffin and a dinner roll. Some people order dessert after this. What is the benefit of eating a 5000 calorie meal in one sitting? If I'm going to eat something with 3 days worth of calories, it better taste great, which the food at this place does not. Their desserts are (what I call ) pudding based. Stuff like lemon and chocolate that looks like pudding, can be mixed up fast and poured in a pie pan and refrigerated. These are not baked pies. They ladle on meringue and (I imagine) use a kitchen torch to brown the top. Waitress was abysmal. Brought water after being asked not to, so I asked her to remove it. This was our second time to stop at the Koffee Kup. It was out of desperation this time: my husband had to use the restroom & my child was "starving to death" (her words, not mine). So, I reluctantly agreed. It was busy but not packed. It seemed like 5 minutes before anyone even acknowledged we were in a booth. We eventually ordered a chicken sandwich to split & got the kiddo the kids chicken strips. Once we got our order in, it was an additional half hour before our food came out. I would be a bit more understanding if everything was hot. But it wasn't. We split a chicken sandwich, which had approximately 1/4 cup of mayo on it. I scraped it off & proceeded to eat half of the smallest chicken breast I've ever seen. I couldn't even eat the lettuce on the sandwich due to it being so weighed down by mayo. And to top it off, the sandwich was cold & didn't taste all that great anyway. The onion rings may have been good...had they not been cold. I thought about sending it all back but remembered how slow the service had been up to this point & decided my desire to get home (2 hours away) outweighed my need for anything else. The chicken strips & fries weren't super hot but weren't nearly as cold as the adult plate & my starving daughter scarfed them down. When I went to pay, I was curtly told "we don't take plastic, there's an ATM machine outside". Sure, I missed it but don't be a jerk after you just served me cold food. Stopped by on the evening of March 15, 2015. The pies are super, the food is not bad either. The biggest problem and why we won't stop here anymore is the extremely poor service. We thought it might be the wait staff; however, I think it is the kitchen staff for the food is always out late or only part of the order so someone doesn't eat with their party. Mixed bag. OK first of all, I have to admit I have never had Chicken Fried steak before so I can't really compare. But after trying it from this place, I don't think I would want to try it again. What we had: 1) Chicken Fried Steak - I thought it was a piece of white meat chicken with crunchy batter on the outside similar to fried chicken that I would normally get from KFC or Chicken Express. I could not be more wrong. It was grounded chicken with a little chicken smell...yeah...I didn't know chicken can have a smell like that. Skip if you have never had this dish before. BTW, we ordered it because the waitress sid it was their best selling dish. hm... 2) Steak - This one is really good. I would prefer this over Outback Steak house. So tender...and the taste was just right. BTW, This place was packed at lunch time. Update: Someone contacted me and told me that chicken fried steak is actually steak not chicken.
