We passed through Hawi a few times and got ice cream cones here each time. So delish. It's Tropical Dreams Ice Cream, Island-made in nearby Waimea. It's good but I was sad to later learn that it contains additives that I don't personally keep in my kitchen such as guar gum, propylene glycol, and dextrose. That's not Kohala Coffee Mill's fault. But if Haagen Dazs can use pure ingredients, why can't a quality company like TDIC? Anyway, I'd stop in again for a Kona coffee cone because I'm not making a steady diet of it, the place is great, and the staff are really friendly too. Ooh, try the peanut butter with Oreos (speaking of additives; hahaha), if they have it; it became my new fave last time. :) read more

After a fun hike with kids we planned on a big treat of ice cream for 8 of us afterwards. We even made sure we arrived before they closed. We parked across the street and walked towards their door at 5:38 pm, and they literally locked the door as they saw us coming! Boo! We stopped in this town with 40 minutes to spare before doing the awesome Flumin' Ditch kayak ride. With 40 minutes we figured no problem to grab a sandwich and iced tea before spending three hours in our activity. We ordered and 40 minutes later our two veggie sandwiches and piece of quiche finally came out after we pushed hard to get them. We are while walking to our event. 40 minutes for something to go into a microwave and a few veggies on bread. Other people were getting their money back. The staff were laughing, joking and catching up while 20 people grew more and more impatient. They had no insight into how slowly they were working. 5 people behind the counter and in 40 minutes I only saw 3 things come out of the kitchen. Sandwiches and quiche were ok, but make sure you've got nothing better to do. Or better yet, head up the street to Kings Cafe. read more

I love the Kohala Coffee Mill! My favorite thing is a Lillikoi Yerba mate cooler and a BLT with avocado on a croissant. ;) And when you eat here you are supporting an awesome locally owned business that is striving to help cut back on our plastic waste! Karen's recycling systems are not only effective but educating folks on just how important it is to become more aware and implement! The store has paper straws and compostable cups for instance. We are planning our vacation back to the BI in December this year and looking forward to come to KCM again. My last visit was back in 2009 and the macadamia nut ice cream still brings back great memories. It was a hot day in May and after having lunch at the Bamboo restaurant from across the street, my husband wanted to have ice cream and I said I'd pass. After trying some of his macadamia ice cream I went back and got myself a scoop. It was sooo good. Definitely will be back! read more

What's the hype with Kona coffee? From everything I experienced, it's just like regular coffee...but maybe worse? Either way, I would stick with the blended stuff here, because it was a better kind of mediocre than the genuine article. That said, this is a fine place to get a cup of coffee. Nothing to write home about, but better than your other quick coffee options in Hawi, which all also allow you to purchase gas. Got a bit of an unfriendly vibe from the place, which made the experience a bit more of a bummer, but you take what you can get when you're in a small town, I guess. read more

I requested decaf iced coffee and they brewed it fresh for me. Really good coffee. The reason I am giving only 3 stars is that I wanted to order a salad around 5:10pm. Despite their closing time was 6pm, they were not taking food orders. Wish I knew their kitchen is closing earlier. Inside is a bit too loud. Cute coffee shop with great service and atmosphere. Coffee sizes range from 8oz to 16oz. The iced coffee comes in 20oz however. The woman who made my coffee was amazing and gave me exactly how much room I asked for cream. They also use compostable cups and paper straws which is very cool. read more

Stopped in while driving by for Ice Cream. Cute little store with few tables inside and out. Ice cream was good but I was expecting way better considering this is supposed to be the best Hawaiian made Ice Cream. Bit pricey for the quality in my opinion. The ice cream is divine. The pistachio was the best ice cream I have ever had. It's well worth the drive to Hawi just for the ice cream.

This is my favorite restaurant in Hawi and I eat breakfast and lunch there frequently. The salads, wraps and soups are delicious. Great scones and quiche made on site too. Try the breakfast eggs--on an English muffin sandwich or with bacon on the side. Excellent coffee drinks, ice tea, smoothies, local ice cream and shave ice too!! read more

I ride my bike from Waikaloa to Hawi regularly, and this place is where I stop, have ice cream, coffee, fill up my water bottles, and turn around. I get friendly, fast service and enjoy my treat in their outdoor seating area. Tropical Dreams ice cream is da bomb.... The Tahitian vanilla is my all time favorite, but none of the flavors will disappoint. You don't have to ride your bike here, just stop by for a treat when passing through Hawi, or after a meal in one of the numerous nearby restaurants for dessert and coffee. I keep meaning to one day try their own food here and will update my review once I do. read more

This was such a great place! We stopped here on the way back after doing the hike to the black sand beach. We walked by all the other restaurants and the prices were just way too high for a quick lunch. We walked across the street to this cafe just to see what they had. They have sandwiches and coffee and ice cream and more. I was able to get a burger, a bottle of water, two eggs and a brownie for only $13 bucks. Honestly was plenty and I was really surprised at that. The burger was cooked well and we really enjoyed sitting outside. If you are in Hawi and want to grab a quick bite and still have some money for some souvenirs somewhere else than I deff recommended this place! They have ice cream for the kids and coffee for adults lol and the food is good portion for the price! read more

Ordered a teriyaki chicken burger at noon, to go. The staff seemed friendly but mostly unavailable, in the sense that when I asked if the foil platter was mine, not one of the 5 employees responded. The meat itself had virtually no flavor and was dry as rubber. The onions also had no flavor, which is a pretty impressive achievement. Essentially all I tasted was sprouts. It wasn't cheap, either. I cant comment on their coffee or ice cream, but I definitely wouldn't recommend this place for the food. Ive worked in food service for over 3 years, and its not difficult to make a yummy teriyaki burger. read more

We stopped here for the first time after reading the rave reviews of the ice cream in a guide book. Yes the ice cream was delicious. I had macadamia nut and coconut cream (both good, but mac nut was WAY better, would just get that one next time). However the young woman who waited on us was rude. There was some confusion about my order, and she responded by practically flinging ice cream back into the tub and becoming very abrupt with us. And they really should think about giving out real (plastic) spoons, rather than those tiny flat wooden paddles that I think I had last used in 2nd grade. Come on, a $4 ice cream deserves a spoon. Despite all this, I would go there again. The things we will endure for good ice cream. read more

Regular visitors to the Big Island and originally found this place by reading the blue book (Big Island Revealed). We've been coming every year for the last three years or so. The first two trips for their Tropical Dreams ice cream were outstanding...last year we came back 3 times over the course of a week, driving up from Waikoloa just to get ice cream. Hate to give a so-so review as my first for this place, but our last visit here was kind of disappointing. Not sure what happened, but our massive one scoop cones from the previous years became about half the size and served in a plastic cup. One of my flavors was great, the other was a tad icy, as was the attitude of the server. Maybe she interpreted the confused/scoop deprived look on my face for grumpiness (?). Not yet ready to write off this place...we'll likely try it one more time next year when we visit....the ice cream is generally good, but it wasn't an overall positive experience like we've had in the past. read more

Tried a double with Coconut Dream and Passionfruit which was about $5. Very light and refreshing, but I would have preferred more flavor in the Coconut Dream. It got boring after a few bites. I love how the Passionfruit has tons of seeds in it! It's more like a sorbet. The minus...they are soo stingy! The samples are teeny tiny little scratches of the container, and I saw her take off maybe 1/6 of a scoop and put it back in the container. What? That's nothing...and you're taking it back? Yes the ice cream is good. But I was very disappointed when I spent $35 on a Bivaletz stoneware mug and the staff (or owner) wrapped it in a big ball in tissue so that when I set it down on the table to actually eat my ice cream, it rolled off the table and shattered into a thousand pieces. "Tropical Dreams Ice Cream." I have heard that this was the Best Ice Cream on the Big Island. I'm not going to argue with that. I had the Coconut cream, and it was very creamy. Not much to complain about, other than not having too much to choose from, with only about 10 different flavors. hahaha You can get this Ice Cream at different locations in Kailua-Kona, like at U-Top-It, Aloha Angel Cafe, Kailua Candy Company, and a few other shops around town. They even sell some flavors in pints at KTA stores, but you can't get Coconut. Good thing I discovered this Ice Cream at the end of my trip, or else I'd be coming home even heavier. read more

Across the street from Bamboo restaurant, I saw the sign Shave Ice and I was sold to have it for dessert. It's upstairs from the coffee part and they have a nice balcony with tables on the deck. Inside they have a lot of fudge flavors but I didn't try any samples. For $3.00 I got a rainbow, which was three flavors of shave ice. I choose mango, strawberry li hing mui and lychee. I think the strawberry was the most flavorful. The ice itself wasn't like snow, but it sure was refreshing. And the woman upstairs was very friendly. read more

this is a gem in the little town of hawi. the town itself is no bigger than 3 blocks long. kohala coffee mill has great coffee. hubby's iced coffee was brewed and chilled overnight (i asked). he loved it!! the sandwich was also fresh. made to order...you pick what you want. we had turkey, sprouts, tomato on multigrain bread with light mayo. they toast the chocolate croissant for you. Mmm... after we finished browsing in the small town, we went back for tropical dreams ice cream. the tahitian vanilla was too sweet for my taste. coconut cream was okay. we got a single with kona coffee espresso and macadamia nut. highly recommended! with a single you get 2 scoops...a double is 4 scoops, so you can actually get 4 flavors. nice outdoor covered seating. visit if you are in the area. =) read more

This is another one of those over hyped Hawaiian "you've got to try it" and then you do and you feel like, "Umm, WTF was the big hype all about?" So I don't know who these people are that think this is so great, but it has nothing on Haagen Daaz or even plain old Baskin Robins ice cream. Tropical Dreams is made right on the Big Island and they distribute their frozen treats to random food places. I tried the Kona Coffee and Nut flavored one and Dan had the dragon fruit sorbet. My ice cream was ok in texture, but a little bland in taste. Dan's was day glow pink and tasted nothing like dragon fruit. We both got a scoop in a cup and it cost us a little over $7. Yeah we were ripped off. Next time I am only going to HD. read more
