Had high hopes for this place, but spent $50 and threw all of it away after a few bites. Service was subpar. Young girls that don't seem to want to be there and then the food just really took it for a turn which is a shame because it's a very cute place. Ordered the bbq chicken wrap and the tuna melt along with a side of bacon, sweet potato's, and a smoothie. The bacon was the only enjoyable part. The bbq chicken wrap is really why we're writing this review. I wish I took a photo. First off, no chicken was in it. It was literally bbq sauce and some cheesy green mush. The employee at the register suggested that over the pesto sandwich and man, it was disgusting. Dripping wrap with no meat just a tortilla filled with sauce. The tortilla soup was far from good. Tuna melt was an raw red onion sandwich with a touch of tuna. Spare yourself eating here. Smoothie was okay. Won't be coming back here again. Super bummer for being in a totally awesome part of town and for how expensive it was for throwing it in the trash. read more

Nice little place (little, as in not very many inside tables and a long line that fills the place during busy times), but plenty of outside seating both in front and tiered up the side of the building. The bathroom is next door in a gift shop. We didn't actually order coffee because we were on our way to a big hike. Kids got ice cream and bagels (nothing special), and we got a small but tasty piece of quiche (no side salad or anything served with it) and some veggie hummus sandwiches. Fantastic coffee. We were visiting the artists shops in Hawi, and stopped in the afternoon for coffee. It was probably the best coffee that I had on the big island. I had the macchiato with a shot of caramel, and it was beautifully done. The only drawback was that they were out of vanilla ice cream. It's a great stop in a small Hawaiian town. I'm somewhat of a coffee lover and have to say the cappuccinos were just bad. I was excited by the beautiful foam created by the barista however upon drinking was disappointed. The coffee was good, expensive prices though I will say. From the outside it looks cute & welcoming but once you get up to the counter & look inside it's quite cluttered & looks like sanitation isn't the top priority. Looks like they keep the walls of the building as there storage unit. Gal at the counter was rude & walked away multiple times while we were trying to order to do something else.. which was weird. We had gotten 2 cold brews & 2 bagels - kept it simple. Clearly they had regular customers that actually got great service. There were 3 people working & at least 3 times all of them stopped making the previous orders to go & talk with the regulars. We waited 20 minutes to get our order... mind you all the regulars got there food & drink before us. I got back in line to order 2 kids hot chocolates thinking it shouldn't be much of a wait. Was I wrong. Again regulars coming up & getting greeted, their orders right away & the workers would literally stop doing everything else to take selfies, get a customers phone number(??) & talk story with them. At one point when 4 other people who ordered after me got their coffee & food I had to ask where these hot chocolates were. The barista completely ignored me, I asked again when she handed off another order & she walked away with no response. We waited an hour to get 2 cold brews, 2 bagels & 2 kids hot chocolates. Luckily the group I was with went & walked around while we waited. Moral of the story SKIP AT ALL COSTS !! Service is horrendous, prices are outrageous, & if you want your order promptly - this isn't the place. Giving this place 5 stars based on location, very good ice Kona coffee, hot coffee, clean restroom, and gluten free bread. I should have bought more @ $3 each. Inexpensive home made and with good texture. I make my own back home. We will visit again when back here on vacation. Lots of people come here because it's popular and clean. We purchased a nice koa abalone ring in the shop where restroom is located ( not available in other stores). We will have lunch here next time. We had appetizers in another restaurant across the street and the place was empty except for the flies. We ran back here after 5pm for dinner but it's closed. We were too early for the Fudge / Ice Cream / Shave Ice part of the place to be open (located Upstairs) but we had our tummy's full w/ the coffee house part of the place (located Downstairs) Offerings of coffees, fresh juice smoothies & teas, along w/ a great menu of a few muffins, croissants, bagels, & sandwiches (with lots of veggie options!) Indulged in their homemade Date Bar & OMG was it tasty....sweet & chewy from the date & coconut filling but w/ a bit of crunch from the cinnamon, crumbly-topping but didn't fall all apart - held together & was Freakin-Fantastic .....a perfect pairing to the Mocha which was not too sweet but more nice & mellow - milk was nice & frothy & eased us into the day w/out a HEY - WAKE YOUR BUTT UP - like I need when I'm looking to Martha's Coffee to get me ready for work Sis had a Tea & Oat Cake which was very dense & soaked up the Tea quite nicely. Nice Ice cream, but the bitchy lady behind the counter ruined the experience. Four of us came in for some ice cream after a nice lunch across the street at Bamboo. A couple ahead of us were checking out the flavours available. As I stepped up to the counter, the lady asked what I wanted, I told her I needed to check out what they had before I decide and that seemed to irk her. She threw her arms up in the air like I'd been holding up a huge line for ages while trying to make up my mind. Seriously lady, relax, there was no line up behind us - give me a minute to decide what I want. The other folks with my didn't fare much better with the server either. For a town that seems to largely rely on tourists to keep it afloat, you'd hope that customer service would be a little higher on the priority list. If you want ice cream and want to be treated poorly, this is the place. Otherwise, go get some shave ice or something somewhere else where your business is appreciated. Once upon a time someone wrote a book about The Great Good Place. Meaning a gathering spot that was not just a restaurant. A center for a community. Where you could sit for hours reading a book (yes, this was before the Internet). Where members of the community came every day and the staff already knew their order by heart. Where meetings took place, rumors were spread and straightened out, music made, notices posted...in short, where life took place. For those of us lucky enough to live here, the Kohala Coffee Mill is a Great Good Place. Yes, I love the iced ginger green tea, the dragonfruit sorbet, the tuna melt and the card selection when I've forgotten a birthday. I love the annual Trash Bash and Art Show. But more than anything I love it for being one of those centers of community life where you never leave without a hug from someone. In reading through other reviews I realize that many people come to the island just grabbing for experiences. Hawi is "out of the way". The pace is slow. If you are coming here, come for the destination. Keep your eyes and hearts open and experience a bit of the real Hawaii. They make whole TV shows about rural communities like this (remember Northern Exposure? Ever watch Hart of Dixie?)...so grab an ice cream cone, sit down, and share our special spot with us. read more

We visited after hiking down and up Pololu Valley Lookout, essentially on account of tracking down the Tropical Dreams ice cream which some had raved about. 2 of us had burgers (Muenster was available as a choice - amazing!) and one had a delicious beans & rice bowl. Total with an iced Kona Coffee was around $25 which was super reasonable for Hawaii, obviously. Burgers were really good, but the true highlight was the Tahitian Vanilla flavor from Tropical Dreams. I don't know what they do to it, but as my wife said, "it's the best vanilla ice cream I've ever had!" If we ever get back to the Kohala Coast, we'd stop by here again! read more

Brian's shave ice in LA has ruined me for life. I come to Hawaii and the shave ice doesn't offer dole whip in the middle, just the shave ice. But still, it was pretty good and the service was great. We came here every morning on our 8 day vacation on the Big Island not only because it was 2 miles from our vacation rental in Kapau'u but also because we just loved it that much. The setting was very much the local atmosphere I like to find on vacation, even if they quite plainly call you out on being tourists :) I don't mind. Though I don't drink coffee, the tea selection was surprisingly good. And perfect for those rainy mornings (plentiful on the Kohala Coast). We loved getting our coffee, tea and breakfast here - sipping, munching, doing a crossword. My boyfriend seemed to very much enjoy his daily bagel. I got a smoothie once, but it wasn't stellar - they were very accommodating to make it without dairy, but the fruit was all frozen (and a little goopy at that) rather than fresh and it had too much ice. Did love that spirulina was an option though! Other than the edible/drinkable side, we loved the people. From the regulars to the extremely friendly and cheerful staff, it was just fun to be part of the crowd. Would love to be back! read more

On our way to sightsee the Big Island on a Saturday morning, we passed through Hawi, saw the Kohala Coffee Mill, and parked knowing we'd need some coffee and had found the spot. I always like to ask what the people who work there recommend. Preferring espresso to coffee, they recommended a mocha. It was hands down the best mocha I've ever had!! They use Ghirardelli chocolate in their mochas and it tasted just like a rich, creamy hot chocolate with a little bit of espresso flavor to boot. My husband got an Iced Coffee. Though it was good, the mocha was outstanding. Friendly service, adorable stop on the side of the road, and a great place to sit and sip. read more

Check out the Kava bar just up the stairs from The Mill. Their shaved ice is the great! They use real fruit to flavor the shaved ice, my husband had the guava and lilikoi and said it was the best he'd had. I had their blueberry shake it was delicious so refreshing, and vegan! Only fresh fruit was used. They had kava available but the flavored kava is available after 4pm. read more

The sandwiches here are to die for. They are so delicious! I think this is the best sandwich I've ever had...! Everything was so fresh and it was delicious. The ice cream they have here is also delicious. I got the Passion Sorbet, and it tasted just like lilikoi, which is heaven. Of course, only after finished with eating the ice cream did we discover that there was a place that sells fudge right next door and offers free samples, but we were too full. Oh well, next time! The (pretty) local Tropical Dreams ice cream is wonderful. I became addicted to the Macadamia Nut flavour, and sought it out on the Big Island while I could. The staff at the Coffee Mill were friendly and happy to help you sample until you found a flavour you like. Selling Kona coffee and some out of this world ice cream, the Kohala Coffee Mill is a recommended pit stop while exploring this island. While here, I relaxed on the covered front porch watching locals and tourists alike enjoy a sunny afternoon. The Tahitian vanilla ice cream was outstanding, using three varieties of vanilla beans from Tahiti. Believe it or not, they have the best chilli dog I have ever tasted. And I don't even really like hot dogs. I went back and got another one after my first. The chilli is cooked in a big pot right in front of you and the tomatoes and onions are cut fresh and sprinkled on top. You can sit outside on the tables and enjoy the surroundings of the village.
