I got worried when I saw that Maki Yaki was reportedly permanently closed, so it was a huge relief to find out that they just rebranded to Kohuku Sushi. I have been placing to-go orders from here for years, and the price and quality never disappoint. When I picked up my order, I asked about the new name and they said after 20 years with the same name, it was time for a change. Everything seems the same, but their menu and new website got a very nice upgrade with colorful pictures of almost every item. Our most common to-go order is the mixed shrimp and vegetable tempura ($12), a California roll ($6.50), and a super spicy tuna roll (12 pieces, $11.50). I don't think any other place in the area beats these prices. I don't think they raised prices either which I'm sure a lot of places would do after a rebrand. I'm very happy that my favorite sushi place is still here, just with a new name.

What they advertised and what they actually serve. I love a simple sushi roll but never was I ever serve this type of quality of tuna ANYWHERE!!!. I decided to order a tuna roll and miso soup. This was take out so of course I didn't see it until I I got back to work. When I opened the container This is what I see? It was sooo unappetizing. Makes you question if it's worth risking your health lol. It looks grey and brown. I was like okay maybe it's okay to eat? Then I smelled it. so fishy ! the texture on this when you pull it a part, it was slimy like okra texture. Being on my lunch break, I don't have time to order else where. So I decided to go back and get a refund. I didn't make a fuss. The man who is probably the owner, I don't know but he sure is acting like it. I said can I get a refund. He proceeds to "try" to give me a refund, he looks at another worker and then he said me, you think it's not fresh? I told him no sorry it doesn't. He said okay and you can see him get so frustrated. He proceeds to say again "okay, so you think it's not fresh. Whatever, Whatever!!!. " How many times do you have to ask me! Obviously it doesn't look fresh too me. THIS IS A SIMPLE TUNA ROLL!!! he's giving me attitude? All for a refund? I didn't even take a bite. I'm not happy with the quality! Smell, look, and texture! I have no time for this at this point. I told him it's slimy and looks grey/brown. Still Huffing and puffing like a child. it's that big of an issue, don't refund my money. keep your food. I told him it's okay don't give me a refund. I left the restaurant. No stars! what can you expect? Not a lot of customers in this place. I never been to a sushi restaurant and seen the color on tuna like this. Bad customer service. I rather waste money than get sick from eating what they think good quality food is. The saying " you eat sushi, sushi eats you? " Yes it's this type of restaurant. lol. They hide bad quality ingredients by over dressing their sushi! Horrible.

Previously named MAKI YAKI sushi. This location still has delicious, high quality sushi and lots of fun options for AYCE. Even with the new owner / name change, the food, atmosphere and service remain outstanding. We will thankfully continue to come to this location to satisfy all our sushi cravings

They are Korean owned sushi joint. Both AYCE and à la carte order. To be honest I like AYCE Option here better than X-Fish. Look at my pictures and you can tell. The fish quality is on high end side and small rice to fish ratio. Service was friendly and attentive. We got to pick our own glass when we order bottle which is very nice touch. We will definitely coming back more often

Same owner as the previous incarnation that was Maki Yaki. The place has been nicely renovated and looks great. I guess for the AYCE there are still up to 3 rounds of ordering. The selection of rolls is great. I especially liked the Rainbow Roll and the Tirba Linda Roll. I did not have the resolve to finish a few selections that were listed as "spicy ", so left them for last. I paid a modest surcharge for not finishing the spicy ones Overall, a much better dining experience than the ones I remember from the Maki Yaki days

    Menu

Probably the best AYCE sushi place in the area in terms of food quality to price ratio. They have à la carte menu as well. Fresh fish. Great friendly service. It's a mom and pop place and I love to support these type of small businesses. Great ambience as well. 100% recommend!

    A sashimi plate

My family visited this restaurant while in town visiting a friend. We ordered a sashimi plate and some tuna hand rolls. The fish was incredibly fresh and had perfect chewy texture. I wasn't a big fan of sashimi before, but that night completely converted me. My sons also loved the hand rolls and soup udon. The seasoned fish in the rolls paired perfectly with rice and veggies. The soup udon was one of the best! We loved everything! I was so bummed I don't live nearby. We can't wait to come back next time we're in town. Best of luck!

from maki yaki to now kohuku sushi, this place has been my favorite go-to sushi spot for over 3-4 years. i've been bringing people here whenever i get the chance & nobody has told me they disliked it once and always asks why when we're coming back :) everything is so fresh and delicious. haven't ever gotten sick from this place either! (a record if you ask me) all the staff are so lovely and accommodating, i've not once had a bad experience here. the overall vibe is also so cozy! wonderful lighting & music playing in the background that's not super loud. if you're here to eat alone or with friends, both their ayce & regular menus have a wide variety of things to choose from. there's gonna be something for everyone! 11/10, would recommend for anyone looking for a new go-to sushi spot

Some places sit in the back of your mind for years…read more I first came to Macallan Public House more than a decade ago on a date and always intended to return. Life happened, years passed, and somehow I never made it back. Fast forward to today: I was driving my Tesla, jokingly asked Grok to take me somewhere for a beer, and it pointed me right back here. Walking in felt like revisiting a place that had been quietly waiting in the background of my story. The centerpiece is still the incredible bar. Shelves stacked floor to ceiling with whiskey bottles, glowing green tile behind the taps, warm lighting, and enough character that you can spend half your time simply looking around. It's the kind of room that feels both energetic and comfortable at the same time. I grabbed a seat at the bar, watched a soccer match on the TVs, and ordered an Old Fashioned. It arrived exactly the way I hoped it would: large clear ice cube, generous orange peel, balanced and smooth without trying too hard. Just a well-made classic cocktail. What stood out most was the atmosphere. These days I'm much more likely to be exploring hiking trails, photographing wildflowers, or driving mountain roads than spending time in bars. Twelve years ago, places like this were a much more regular part of my life. Coming back reminded me why I enjoyed them in the first place. Good conversation, a comfortable seat, a quality drink, and no rush to be anywhere else. The beer taps looked extensive, the whiskey selection seemed endless, and the entire place struck a balance between neighborhood pub and whiskey destination. Funny how a random AI navigation suggestion brought me back to a place I'd been meaning to revisit for over a decade. Glad it finally did. 5 stars.

Passed by this place and decided to give it a try. What a unique German restaurant right in Brea…read more It instantly reminded me of the Hofbräuhaus in Vegas with its friendly and welcoming food hall. I'm not super familiar with German cuisine, but everything felt authentic and traditional. I ordered their popular Ruben sandwich, served hot with corned beef, sauerkraut, and a Russian dressing on rye bread. It was delicious and packed with meat and flavor. The fries that came along with it were so crispy and tasty. I also tried the breaded veal cutlet, which is a German specialty. Both dishes were very good and hearty. They also have a great beer selection on draft. I went with the Spaten Pilsner, which paired perfectly with the meal. I love that each of their beers is served in its own branded glass. It was just super filling, I wasn't able to finish everything. Overall, a great experience and definitely a spot I'd come back to and try their various specialties (like their sausages) !
