Koko by Bakan is owned and operated by the same group that has Bakan (obviously) in Wynwood as well as Talavera in Coral Gables, both of which we're long-time fans of. We'd noticed this place when driving by and the restaurant and bar always looked attractive from the street; we've now come here a few times to dine. For us, Koko is a bit of a tradeoff. While the interior design and decor is a bit more sophisticated and upscale-looking than this company's other restaurants (it fits well with the Coconut Grove neighborhood where Koko is located) and I like the general feel of this restaurant a lot, at the same time while their menus are similar, a few of our favorite dishes and cocktails from Bakan are notably absent here and we miss being able to order them. As well, Koko has no TVs above the bar for watching sports. Then again, this restaurant often seems busy, and perhaps the lack of TVs allows them to turn over the bar seating faster and a bit more often. The food and drink here have been good and staff are friendly and attentive, but each time we've dined at Koko, our food has taken a while for us to receive after ordering, even when the restaurant wasn't very full and the open kitchen appeared to be teeming with staff. As is the case with Bakan, some dishes here at Koko are a decent value, while others are a bit pricey considering what one gets. read more

The ambiance was lovely, and the Chilean sea bass tacos were delicious. The only thing that could have been improved was the time spent waiting for the food to be prepared. We were there an hour, and we only received the main dishes we ordered. We didn't have time for dessert and had to cancel the order because the kitchen was slower than expected. Beautiful Tulum type decor at Mexican restaurant Koko. Server Gus was friendly, efficient and explained the menu well. Given we had a larger group with also two young kids, he was able to handle us effortlessly. The food really shines here. Good quality, beautifully flavored with some spicy notes. I got the shrimp tacos which you can also get with lettuce instead of their famous blue corn tortilla. The blue corn tortillas are really good and freshly handmade. For those with a little adventure, they also have an insect menu of ants, grasshoppers, worms etc. I tried the ant egg sauce which was spicy, with some peanut and sweetness with little crunch of perhaps was the ant eggs. I especially appreciated a whole vegetarian section in the menu! My friends and I shared the guac and the street corn, which were both very good. The street corn was my favorite part of the meal! I ordered the cauliflower with mole made from pistachio, which was tasty. It wasn't the softest cauliflower I've had at a restaurant, but the flavors were good and the dish was original. My friends ordered drinks, like the mango martini, and they all liked them. My husband got a smoked old fashioned, which he enjoyed. I absolutely love Koko and this was my third and very best time there. I went with my coworkers to celebrate my birthday and Raina went above and beyond on the service. Not only was she incredibly attentive but she was very sweet as well. She made us feel at home and special for a random lunch on a Wednesday. She even provided a surprise flan at the end that really touched my heart. So so impressed by my first visit to koko! I feel like most new Mexican restaurants try to do too much with such an authentic cuisine, however koko does it just perfectly! Everyone at the table loved their margaritas, and I love how you can choose tequila or mezcal with your choice to begin with. We shared the tomahawk steak and it was enough for three, at a very decent price point. Shout out to Gus our server for all the best recommendations. Visited Koko in Coconut Grove with a group of friends and had an amazing experience! Went with my squad and it's the ultimate hangout spot. The ceviche is like a tropical party in your mouth--flavor explosion, zesty, and downright tasteful. The mezcal cocktails? Crafted to perfection! Tried the churros for dessert, and now I believe in love at first bite. Our server was the real MVP--nice vibes only. The interior of the place is lovely and every corner gives this tropical Mexican inspired energy that I loved very much. I'd definitely recommend opting to outdoor seating while that weather is nice and chilly. We visited Koko on a Sunday afternoon to celebrate my son's graduation. We were a party of 12 with prior reservations. Drom the start things were not great.They sat us at a table that was cobbled together with small square and round tables and rounded up some chairs. We barely fit. It was very tight. The staff was very nice but both busy and distracted. We had to ask for water multiple times, sauces, drinks. Everything we had to flag them down for. It was loud, like 'very hard to hear others at your own table loud'. The actual food was pretty good. Not fantastic, but good. Just not worth the uncomfortable & loud, poor service experience. I 'may' go back another time with a smaller party at night to see if it's any better. But honestly,won't go out of my way. Gave them 3 stars because the food was pretty tasty. read more

I have been a loyal patron of KOKO for quite some time and dine here regularly during the week. I truly enjoy the food, the health focused menu, the atmosphere, and much of the staff. Because of this, I chose KOKO as the place to celebrate my birthday, which is not something I do often and was genuinely looking forward to. Unfortunately, the experience was extremely disappointing and stressful. I made a reservation in advance for a table, expecting that guests could also order drinks at the bar as they arrived. Upon arrival, it became clear that KOKO enforces a strict policy requiring all guests to be seated at the bar in order to order drinks. Standing at the bar or briefly ordering while waiting is not allowed. While I respect house policies, this was not communicated at the time of booking, and it immediately caused confusion and discomfort for my guests. Friends arrived at different times and were repeatedly turned away from the bar unless seated, creating awkward situations and unnecessary tension. I spoke with staff and management multiple times to explain that this was a birthday gathering and that people were coming in gradually. Despite this, there was no flexibility, accommodation, or solution offered, only repeated enforcement of the policy. The issue was not the rule itself, but the lack of hospitality and understanding. A restaurant that promotes community and warmth should be able to handle a special occasion with a bit more grace, especially for a loyal, long standing customer. Instead, I found myself having to constantly explain the situation and advocate for my guests, which is not how anyone should feel when hosting a celebration. The overall effect was that the evening became uncomfortable and emotionally exhausting. The celebratory energy was lost, and several guests expressed confusion and frustration. What should have been a joyful night turned into an embarrassing and disappointing experience. This review is written honestly and constructively, not out of spite. I believe KOKO has the potential to do better. Clear communication of policies at the time of reservation and a more hospitality driven approach to special occasions would make a significant difference. I hope this feedback is taken seriously. I have always enjoyed KOKO, but this experience has made me reconsider celebrating or hosting important moments here in the future. read more

I was impressed by the vast Tequila and mezcal options and wish I could try them all. The Sera Sandia drink was otherworldly, my mouth is drooling just thinking about it. I enjoyed the enmoladas de pollo but I would have preferred a bit more of the cream as it was a bit dry. I have been wanting to go to Koko for a while. I have been going to Bakan whenever I want some good Mexican. When I had a friend visit I knew that this was a great chance to go ! I booked before hand for a Wednesday . And it was busy ! Every table was taken. This spot is definitely better than Bakan in Wynwood. It is in a nicer area with easier parking. The food was delicious . I got mushroom quesadillas and my friend got salmon. One thing that I would love for them to do is to include a better description of the different ingredients. Overall a great spot ! Spot on vibes. It's a perfect spot for dinner. I would recommend sitting outside. I am definitely coming back here ! Also, it is very vegetarian friendly. After reading positive reviews, my best friend and I went in for lunch. So here's my honest review. The restaurant is beautifully decorated so five stars there. And that's with the stars start to dwindle. And while the drink menu is extensive, it is rather confusing and difficult to understand and we were offered very little to no explanation. Koko by Bakan is such a vibe! Located in the new bustling corner of Mary street next to Sadelle's this restaurant is bringing Tulum vibes to the Grove. It's the same folks as Bakan, so you can expect delicious Mexican eats. What I love about this particular spot is the bar. It's massive, and wraps both indoor and outdoor. I've been a few times for drinks and it's great. I love their margarita that has climates in it, the El Que Es Perico. The food options have a lot of options, from pork, to vegan, chicken, seabass or shrimp. There are just many choices and prices range less than 20$. They have bigger entress as well. The tortillas are home made and the blue corn tortilla which just adds so much more Flavor. The chicken taco was wrapped up and made crunch which I did not expect, I though it would be soft taco type style. We arrived on Friday afternoon and were seated indoors immediately We ordered classic margaritas which were refreshing, and strong! We decided to choose from the menu for Miami Spice. For appetizers, we enjoyed aguachile de camaron con mango and calabacitas gratinadas con mole coloradito. Both were delicious and the servings were generous. Main courses we tried were the sea bass and chicken, both in different moles. I am a mole lover and these selections allowed me to try three different moles; green, almendardo , and coloradito. I found all three different and delicious, with the coloradito being the most spicy to me. For dessert, you must try the chocolate abuelito brownie with ice cream, laying on a rich mocha sauce. Our server, Reyna, was amazing -Five stars for her! She was friendly and professional, always there when needed, but not intrusive. This restaurant will definitely be in my future dining plans. We went to Koko to celebrate a friends birthday. From the moment we entered, we loved the ambiance. It had a Tulum feel to it. I am Mexican and the food was truly amazing. I recommend the cochinita pibil tacos. If you want to be adventurous, try the grasshopper tostadas. I was hesitant at first, but it really doesn't taste like anything other than if you're eating a sunflower seed with the shell since it's crunchy and salty. The drinks were great! From the shots to the margaritas. Lastly, our waiter... the BEST OF THE BEST, Gus! All the recommendations he provided were amazing and he himself was a whole vibe! In this place, we like to order different plates and share. We tried the esquites, the guacamole, queso fundido poblano (which is my personal favorite), tacos de carnitas, and the skirt steak which you can make into your taquitos. It's served with grilled poblano chile relleno filled with Oaxaca cheese, refried black beans, grilled corn, guacamole, queso cotija, and grilled knob onion. We had an odd experience at Koko- arrived on time for our reservation for 2 and were informed we would have to sit outside as they had no table for us inside the restaurant. This seemed odd since there was no mention on outside seating in my reservation. No heat lamps. Indifferent front desk people. first inclination was to leave, then asked for manager who also was indifferent. Mind you- we had a reservation with no mention of outdoor seating. Manger did find us a table- he was not pleasant. Service was good. Food was good. However, I'm still puzzled as to why they were indifferent to us. We're generally pleasant- and midwestern; I thought maybe at the end of dinner, they would offer dessert or coffee in a conciliatory manner, but that didn't happen. As one of my favorite restaurants for food and drinks, it was obvious that I would choose it for my bday celebration. When I called to make the reservation for 12 people, I was informed that they couldn't accommodate more than 11 but that they will allow to squeeze an extra guest. Our server was magnificent and very acknowledged in how to handle a big table!! Drinks and appetizers were coming fast, food orders were coming fast and that when an issue happened with one of my guests. As most families here in USA, my friends have a 2 yrs old that couldn't let home so, they brought him with them. First issue: they don't have high chairs because that restaurant is not for kids (according to the manager, they cannot inform that publicly because that's illegal), so my friends brought in the stroller. When food came for them, their plate was handled to them, in their hands!!! Because there were not more space in the table. My friend asked if he could get an extra chair so he could sit in the small space left at the table and the manager said he couldn't do it. To make the story short, my friends returned their food and left the celebration, mad and hungry, leaving me frustrated and sad. I wanted for everyone to have a good time. I understand that a private restaurant may don't want to have people with kids in them but then, they should advise the patrons in advance. It's not easy for some families to go out and always pay a babysitter and if it a bday celebration, at 6 pm on a Sunday, you assume it is okay to bring your kid. We were a big table, ordering a lot of food and drinks and that will be reflected in a big check with a big tip, so, just try to be smarter and treat that table with more empathy and consideration.
