There's something deeply satisfying about food wrapped in dough, and that's basically what Kolache Republic is all about -- deliciously doughy foods that manage to be filling without being too heavy or greasy. I'd never come across a "kolache" before, though a lot of cultures have foods that are in the same ballpark (i.e. Italian stromboli etc.). On this visit, I had a hashbrown, egg, and cheese kolache as well as a cinnamon roll -- both the sweet and savory items are made with the same basic dough, which shows its versatility. My girlfriend had a jalapeno and kielbasa kolache as well as a sweet cheese one (basically a cheese danish by another name). I absolutely loved both of mine, and wound up eating them together. Again, it's one of the benefits of having the same dough for sweet and savory. My girlfriend didn't like her savory one as much, but she conceded that it was good, but that she just wasn't in the mood for that combination. All told, it's rather dangerous to have a place like this within a couple miles of where I live, as I suspect that I'll start imagining how much better every food I eat would be if it were wrapped in dough. But seriously, Kolache Republic is yet another of the great, unique establishments in the German Village area, and it should be anyone's go-to spot for doughy goodness of the sweet or savory variety. read more

Went back yesterday for my second time. This visit was planned so less sporadic than my previous one. LOVE it. Get the seasonal eggplant side...it's incredible. Oh, Kolache Republic - what a deliciously happy find you were! This place was GREAT! All the kolaches are top notch, and the staff is all very friendly and helpful. My husband and I are from Texas, where kolaches are as ubiquitous as donuts. Finding the real deal in Ohio is awesome! I'm so glad to see they are being introduced to the area, because they really are a delicious pastry. Trust me, Ohioans - you will love them. Go try one. Right now. I tried the sweet cheese (basically cream cheese), and sausage and cheese. My husband got a sausage, cheese, and jalapeño, and blueberry. They were all top notch. We also each got an iced coffee that was good too. It was the perfect amount of food for a sunny Saturday brunch. Lovely little spot. Basic set up. Awesome staff. I stopped in during the morning and got a Breakfast Kolache. I can't say it was good by comparison because I've never had a Kolache...but it was damn good itself. Yummm! Resembled a savory donut. Just moved to the neighborhood and was immediately searching for my go-to bakery; I am happy to say I FOUND IT! Loved the sausage and egg kolache which had just the right ratio of bread (not too much) to fillings (hefty enough portion that you get your protein). Look forward to trying other items from their menu which boasts nice variety. I am so very happy I walked right past Panera and right into Kolache Republic for a delicious lunch of a Cajun pork kolache and quinoa kale salad with almonds and feta. The spice of the pork was perfect and the light flavorful salad was delicious. I also recommend the sweet kolache. It is not overwhelmingly sweet like a danish but just the right balance and great with coffee. This is a great spot for a deliciously different lunch. Do give it a try! read more

Wandered into this gem while my wife and I were visiting Columbus. We couldn't pick between the "sweet" and "savory" kolaches, so we got one of each. The almond kolache has a creamy and tasty filling and a thick bready pastry, and fair warning, it is not particularly sweet (this didn't bother me, but might disappoint someone else). I was pleased with it. We also ordered a bierock (large roll filled with ground beef, sauerkraut and cabbage), which was spot on. We had just been feeling snacky but this kolache is big enough for a decent lunch and delicious to boot. My wife is not a kraut fan, but really enjoyed the bierock. This is a solid place with good service and good food. Kudos! read more

Not sure what a Kolache is? neither was I...Think danish pastry, but with less cloying sweetness and an amazing yeasty pastry surrounding homemade filling. This brand new breakfast and lunch spot in German Village is a welcome addition to the neighborhood food scene. I promise after you taste the delicious home made offerings you won't be buying any more breakfast pastries at the chain coffee shops. I tried the sweet cheese and strawberry varieties and both were great. I can't wait to go back and try one of the savory offerings for lunch. My wife and I used to stop in the town of West, Texas, when driving down from Dallas to either Austin or San Antonio to buy kolache. The town was known for them and they were always worth the stop. Moist, fluffy dough topped with usually homemade topping of fruit or meat. Delightful. Imagine our surprise when Kolache Republic opened just a few blocks from us. We went immediately. It is a very simple setting. All is new and bright. Tables are few and small. Utilitarian. The whole shop is build around kolache and other pastry. They are very authentic and tasty. Along with the fruit, they have a sausage kolache with cheese (with or without Jalepeno) which is a very flavorful sausage surrounded by kolache dough. Yummy and filling. Rick, the owner, is incredibly friendly (as is all of the staff) and remembers you when you come back. Not expensive and a great alternative to other breakfast fare. Try it. read more

This place is really great! I live right in the area so sometimes drop by for a breakfast snack. My only suggestion is that they think about adding some vegetarian-friendly savory items to the menu. Pretty much all of the current ones contain some type of meat, but a egg and cheese or even something with veggie sausage would be amazing. The staff is so nice though. They saw that I was longingly eyeing the savory stuff and came over to our table and gave us a sweet kolache on the house to make up for it. Yum! read more

I live in the campus area but Kolache Republic is worth the drive over to German Village. All of the food is simply phenomenal, they won't serve anything unless it is fresh and lives up to their standards. The specials are all unique and expertly crafted (the jambalaya one is my favorite), and their daily's such as the Bierock (I've had like 10 of them) and the breakfast kolache are all super good. The staff is all friendly and you definitely get the passion and vibe that you can only get from small business. Prices are also very reasonable, and you'll always come out full. I would recommend this place to anyone and everyone, and I plan on taking my mom there for lunch the next time she visits from out of town! read more

Kolache Rep. was excellent, went there for the lunch, and had the kielbasa & jalapeno. I associate tried their sausage and egg and we both had pastries. I liked that the store front is rather quaint and the people working there were happy to help us get our bearings in German Village. The Kolaches were excellent, though I have nothing with which to compare them. They were fresh, hot, and the jalapeno gives the meal a more exciting flavour. As to the reason they didn't make a five: first, the selection isn't very broad which is unfortunate, because I feel that they could really build on the kolache theme. Second, the pastries weren't anything to write home about and again the selection was limited. The prices are good and the coffee exceeding the average. To reaffirm, if you're in German Village I can definitely recommend a stop for lunch or a snack. read more

Really pumped that Columbus has a kolache place! We tried our first kolache years ago on a visit to Austin, and fell in love- they're part empanada, part pasty, part paczki- basically they're awesome dough pockets filled with sweet or savory fillings. Happily, Kolache Republic is doing them right! The owners are super sweet and very helpful. Definitely worth treating yourself to a few of these every once in a while!
