Ordered carry out. My husband ordered steak fajitas. They came without any cheese. Not unusual. But corn tortillas fell apart and were not great. I ordered from the kids menu. Only place to get tacos and the corn tortillas fell apart. Their chicken tacos literally had a whole chicken breast sliced in thick chunks that the tortilla could not have held. Hello. Food ok. Not bad, but nothing special. Service ok. Nice enough waiters, rough around the edges. However they need to figure out their lounge vs. restaurant situation. The restaurant is packed with good ambiance and vibe, but the lounge feels like the ugly stepchild. Also the restaurant does not serve lounge food such as tacos, but based on the pictures I saw of the tacos, I probably got lucky. Also, the "lounge" had no lounge to it. Just more chairs and booths, like an overflow restaurant area. And finally the spot lights outside!! We were seated right next to one and it was horrible. They are placed flush in the ground and shine upwards, right in your face if you're unlucky enough to be next to one. Another table asked if theirs could be turned off and they said no. We tried to turn our table a bit to avoid it, but it was impossible. Overall, it was ok. They definitely have some work to do if they want to stay open long. read more

We have been looking forward to opening of Kolucan for the last couple of months. We typically frequent Reynas Taqueria which is the same owners. We arrived early enough for happy hour and sat in the Frida Lounge. Very nice, well lit, space with plenty of seating. Between 3pm-6pm they have happy hour specials on food and drinks. Starting at 5pm they roll with the "lounge menu" which has some items from the main restaurant. Overall Kolucan is a great new addition to the gulf gate area. We've visited this place about three times in the last five months based on a neighbor's recommendation. The service can be a bit spotty, especially when they're busy. The food is more of a gourmet take on Mexican cuisine. My teenage daughter had a hard time finding something to order, probably because she's used to Taco Bell, lol. Overall, we were pleased with our visit to the upscale Kolucan. Our friends Shrimp Fajitas looked great as did the Short Ribs. Both had moderately large portions and were very well presented. Both friends thought their dishes were exceptional. I had the Chochinita Pibil and its sauce and pork were incredible with a moderate portion size although a bit overdone. My wife had the Scallops with Risotto. The risotto was absolutely incredible. Unfortunately the dish came with only four, very small scallops that were fairly overdone. The real zinger came when we first arrived. Being a Tuesday it was 2 for 1 night on their Margaritas. Being a tequila aficionado I asked our waiter what type of tequila was used in their 2 for 1 margaritas? The waiter sort of brushed it off but after another inquiry he said, "Oh they are premixed"! I inquired again asking about the brand and quality? He then gave me some off brand name that i had never heard of? Well, you get what you pay for I guess as the margaritas were just marginal. The point here is that a restaurant with the quality image that Kolucan is trying to portray should not be using "premixed" margarita mix! Are you serious? So overall we were very pleased with Kolucan but get some better sized scallops and dump the premixed margaritas! read more

Our experiences with Mexican is that you generally get a lot of food for a low price. Nothing special ordered and not a lot to choose from. We ordered a fajita and burrito with 2 beers, supposedly during happy hour and it cost us over $70. I asked about happy hour since our server didn't offer it and ordered a draft and a bottle only to find out that only the draft qualified. Not a big deal but it would have been nice to know since I was specifically asking about happy hour. Very small beer selection. Also got charged additional for having flour tortillas vs corn; again, not a big deal but it would have been nice to know this while ordering vs discovering it on the bill. Ordered margaritas with a smoky rim which were very good. Had the queso with tortillas as an appetizer. Cheese wasn't hot so quickly congealed. I had the carne asada, which I requested with no beans or rice and asked to substitute those with salad. The steak was barely warm and undercooked. It did not come with a salad but vegetables with peppers in it which I am allergic to. I requested the steak to be heated again and cooked further. When it was returned it was slightly warmer though not hot like fresh off a grill and covered in some kind of hot sauce which I cannot eat. So basically left there and had little to no dinner. My card was also charged $3 more than what I had left including the tip. I will not be back based on this. read more

The website says "Elevated Mexican Flavors" and that is true. On the restaurant side, we snacked on the Tres Caminos appetizer while waiting for dinner. It was just the right size to whet our appetites without dulling them. The four of us ordered Camarones al Ajillo, Fajitas Tejanas, Huachinango a la Veracruz, and Callo de Hacha de Colima. All were eye-pleasing and delicious. The Como La Flor mocktail was a revelation. And we were grateful that gluten free beer was available. Although not specifically labeled regarding gluten, we find that the menu gave us many gluten free options. It really helps that most dishes are served with in-house made corn tortillas. Skip dessert though. Cafe de Olla and espresso tasted like instant powder. And amazingly, they had no coffee liquer to add to the Cafe de Olla. Flan was almost separating. I still rate it 5 stars. Server Chris was tops. On our previous visit we ate in the lounge. Playful street food menu encourages the diner to mix and match. Yum! read more

Went for lunch, extremely disappointing. The menu looked interesting, so we were excited to go. We ordered Guacamole con Chicharron (crispy pork belly on guacamole) as an appetizer. The pork was chopped so small it was indistinguishable from a finely chopped MacDonald's nugget. Very little pork, no flavor, no seasoning, cold. Served with 2 cold stewed cherry tomatoes. The guacamole was good, served in a large container that was very shallow, so very little for $16. My husband ordered the burrito bowl with mesquite chicken. The chicken was bland, hardly seasoned, did not taste much of anything, and certainly not mesquite. Overall, like something from Chipotle. I couldn't see anything I wanted on the menu so just ordered the Queso Fundido. It came with corn tortillas, I wanted chips, so they were very accommodating and brought some at no charge. The waitress, Kirsten, said it was really good spread on the tortillas. I just don't know what to say about this dish. Gloopy, thick, greasy, and unappetizing with tasteless chorizo and pico. I stirred it and it turned into one large ball of stuck-together mush in the bowl swimming in oil, definitely not spreadable on anything. The chips were good. I was starving, so took one bite, but there was no way I could eat this. When the waitress came by, I told her it wasn't good, and I couldn't eat it. No sorry.... she just asked why not, and what was bad about it. So, I told her, thinking they were interested in feedback. I expected a response similar to "Sorry, can I get you something else?". Nope. "Well, that's what Queso Fundido is", she snapped back. A loosely disguised "Look dummy, what do you expect". I told her I thought she was very rude, to which she replied, "Really?". She spent a few minutes talking to the manager and then took it off the bill. More surprising was the Manager, who never came over, I would have expected that. I also have to say there seemed to be a lot of nickel and dimming going on with the offerings, small portions, canned sodas, etc. Anyway, won't be back and wouldn't recommend it. Told my boyfriend I wanted to try something new. Stopped here around 1:30 for lunch. There was 5 other tables in the restaurant. Got chips and the corn salsa (not complimentary), which was pretty good. Then I ordered birria tacos, my boyfriend ordered El pastor tacos. It took a little bit for our tacos to come out, around 25-30 mins. Both were okay, we weren't really impressed but we'll give it another try! Tried Kolucan Mexican restaurant cannot say I will return. The food was just ok. Started with the corn cheese dip for the chips! Very bland no kick to the cheese dip all the corn and green peppers were on the bottom of the bowl. Chips were rustic thick dry chips. And the Tamal was the best I've ever had; the was masa incredibly creamy. The mole braised short rib... yes. Having lived in Mexico I have been craving a bit different than what we get here and have not been able to find some of these dishes, especially things like Yucatán inspired. This is a nicer Mexican restaurant. The only distraction was a woman who was either the owner or manager. We had a reservation and came 15-20m early. The hostess was looking to seat us. The owner/mgr came over and talked to hostess about us as if we weren't there "are they walk ins?, watch the table you put them at...". We ended up fine, but was a little odd. This was our third time dining at Kolucan, and if you're looking for an upscale, fresh Mexican dining experience, I would highly recommend! Very cool atmosphere at night with the indoor lights and the beautiful torches burning outside on the patio. Our server, Manny, was excellent! We were a party of 8, and he expertly walked all the newcomers in the group through the food and drink menus, and he was super friendly and attentive throughout the evening. The food here isn't your typical Mexican fare. Their menu offers truly unique, modern, chef-inspired twists on traditional favorites. In our group we tried the Salmon Tampiqueño, the Huachinango a la Veracruz, Camarones Al Ajillo, Enchiladas Veganas, the Enchiladas Divorciadas, and we even had a couple split the huge Parrillada de Sonora.
