The special with tempura is really good all of our party ordered it. It comes with about 5 vegetable pieces and 1 shrimp. The special also has the option for rolls (come with about 6 pieces), miso soup, salad and a portion of rice. All of which were very good for the price! I got tempura (two shrimp and some vegetables), which was light and crisp, and salmon-avocado rolls, which were very fresh. It's served alongside miso soup (a tad salty but otherwise nice) and a well-dressed salad. Importantly, it is served in a real bento box, and not a paper takeaway container! This is our favorite local sushi spot. They have great rolls, sushi and appetizers. It's always nice to come in for lunch and sit on the patio. I came here to try this restaurant with my husband. There was a really strong sour bleach smell in the restaurant so we decided to order to go instead. I got the udon and thought it was decent. The noodles were nice and tender. Broth was a tiny bit too salty for my liking but Ok. I wasn't a huge fan of the beef pieces - kind of had a crumbly texture which I don't like too much. Ikura was just okay. A bit expensive? It was like $6 for one piece. Not the freshest unfortunately. My husband got the unagi and he was not a fan. He thought it wasn't cooked very well (I think he said over cooked). He was pretty unhappy with the dish and his stomach was a bit upset afterwards. My new favorite sushi spot! I've come here about once a week for the past month and a half or so for lunch and it never disappoints. Food always comes out quickly, hot and tasty. I really enjoy their Deluxe Bento Box. Chicken teriyaki, rice, sashimi, salad, miso soup and tempura! And the price is great! Not to mention the service! They are always very polite, friendly and accommodating of me and my dog when we come. They have some outdoor seating for those nicer weather days. And if you sit inside it is cozy as well. We were super excited to see that Koma had a second location! We love Koma in Menlo Park and had high hopes for this new location. My daughter and I came in super hungry after surviving a 3.5 hour ordeal at the DMV and wanted to treat ourselves for completing our DMV event. One of our favorite Itamae/chef Jerry was working so of course my sushi was perfect. I love that the they have wild salmon as well as marinated mushrooms for maki rolls. My daughter had the salmon bento box - her fish was cooked to perfection, moist and a bit of crisp of the skin. The accompanying California roll (made with real crab) was well balanced with just the right amount of rice. A lovely mixed green salad with homemade dressing was spot on as was the side of rice - moist and flavorful. Service was very prompt - nicely decorated and welcoming place. read more

Went for a small hike in San Gregorio. Went through a beautiful road highway 84 and craved for sushi. Not too bad of a sushi place. The california rolls that sushi joints normally serve are imitation crab with mayo but this one didn't have mayo so it was a light bite. Better yet, they use real crab! I got the lunch combo which consist of 5 ngiri, 6 pieces of california roll, soup, and salad for about $15. Also, loved their salad dressing!!! The only thing I can say about this place was that the fish seemed fresh, however it was supremely under seasoned. And that's just the beginning of the problems. I ordered a to go order and although I ordered clearly Horenso Goma-Ae and she pointed to it on the menu and we agreed that that's what I was getting, I ordered what I thought was an orange blossom roll, again pointing to the item on the menu so there would be no confusion, a miso soup and some nigiri Harami. I got a cherry blossom roll which has tuna on the outside and I do not like tuna. And I got a seaweed salad which is clearly not what I ordered, I also do not enjoy seaweed salad and much prefer the spinach. She even used the word spinach when she reiterated what I was ordering. Finally, upon seeing the mistake at home, I called them and let them know how disappointed I was that 90% of my dinner was not what I ordered and certainly was disappointing at best as I don't like what they gave me. Plus, I think what I paid cost more money than what they gave me. The icing on the cake was when they hung up on me. They clearly don't care about their customers and they certainly don't care about making things right. Beware when you go there! I would choose another place, a very good place is Naomi sushi in Menlo Park they've always been exceptional. read more

I was craving tempura and was near this place, so I decided to give it a try. Big mistake. Huge! The two small pieces of broccoli in the tempura were burned and tasted nasty. There was one onion ring and a couple of slices of potato. Rip off. And why did the chef think it was okay to put burned food in the container?! It's not like it wasn't obvious. The teeny tiny salad had fresh ingredients and a tasty sesame dressing. The avocado roll had fresh, perfectly ripe avocado, but they only gave one small packet of soy sauce for it. I decided to add a small bottle of sake to the order, and they charged me $20 for it! If they hadn't given me burned broccoli, I probably would have given them four stars. Just discovered this place. We were excited to have a nearby alternative to our regular sushi place down the hill. The employees were attentive and kind and the restaurant was comfortable and cute. However, I was only doing takeout. I was shocked when neither one of the kids would eat their sake maki! They both said it tasted 'weird' and one said it tasted sour. I finally took a bite myself and I have to agree! It was the strangest thing ever. It didn't taste like the salmon was 'bad' per se, but it did have an odd tangy flavor. Not appetizing at all. Even after pouring some soy sauce to dip into, the kids tried again and still refused to eat it. These kids love sushi. I don't know what to say other then it may have been a fluke? I will try again in the future and see what happens (but with a smaller order, just in case!) read more

I really REALLY wanted to like Koma, lets start there. I live in the local area and there is nothing more appealing than having a great sushi joint in the hood. Unfortunately, having given it a try it just isn't going to be a regular stop. The sushi is totally mediocre in general, rice - whatever, fish - fine. But nothing worth the calories. The real issue though is the "crab" which I was assured is "real snow crab". That might be, but chum salmon is "real salmon", I just don't want it on my plate. The crab used in the rolls (see pic) was as dry and flavorless as wood shavings (I am not being overly dramatic) - literally at best pointless, at worst unappetizing. Worse, when I called back politely to offer the feedback, the attitude was like "I was crazy" - seriously man - this is not the only sushi place in town - taste your food - its not great. Really excited to see a new and affordable restaurant in the area! I got the lunch special with chicken teriyaki and sashimi to-go. Staff was very friendly and the interior looked nice. Note: parking in this plaza is a struggle around lunchtime. Chicken teriyaki was outstanding: really great grilled flavor with just the right touch of sauce. Side salad came with a sesame/peanut type vinagrette which I really liked; this might be made in-house. Sashimi was fine, especially nutty salmon. Love the fresh slice of orange and nice garnish. Notably, a VERY generous portion--I have quite a bit of leftover chicken. A few details to iron out, however. I didn't get any miso soup that was promised (though it was plenty of food anyway). The "wasabi" was horseradish overload (VERY spicy). And maybe it's just me, but the radish that came with the sashimi tasted strongly of mold!? In any case, this is a good deal and they have nice seating indoor and out. Definitely worth a visit. read more

In Ladera, just off 280, the gateway to Portola Valley; we are fortunate to have several restaurants, and Koma Sushi is one of them. Wonderful people, very pretty setting (outdoor tables too, they are in the parking lot, but it is a pretty parking lot!). I am not a sushi expert, but having eaten many times at places that include Nobu in NYC and at the fish market in Tokyo, I find this to be a gift to the neighborhood and a favorite of mine. The fish and preparation quality are of high standards, and it is reasonably priced. So my five stars is a combination of the people, the great food, the great prices, and it is on my way home. I've eaten here about 10 times over the last several years and find the presentation and quality of sushi is inconsistent. The udon noodles are decent, but can be overly salty. I dine out often and rarely have I encountered wait staff who are so unprofessional. During our last visit our waitress was downright rude and behaving strangely. I return every once in a while in hopes the food/service will improve, as we live in town and we love to support local businesses. Since Portola Valley has a dearth of good places to eat, it's unfortunate that we try to avoid Koma. After our last visit, I'd rather drive to San Francisco than set foot this restaurant with its mediocre food and rude servers. read more

Amazing sashimi! I ordered the bento box with shrimp tempura and sashimi and it was delicious. Salmon, tuna, and another fish. All delicious and super fresh. Tempura was light and fluffy. Called in an order last minute and they were pretty awesome about getting my food done before they closed for lunch. I waited a total of 10 minutes. In which I didn't mind. This was a random stop for me and I was thankful that they were prompt on getting me fed. I ordered chicken teriyaki lunch special. It was really good, the salad that came with it was also very good. The dressing on the salad was an Asian dressing which I enjoyed eating. The chicken was moist and had a yummy taste to it. If I ever go back that way I'll make sure to stop by there again. read more

My friends and I visit Koma of Portola Valley regularly and each visit leaves us wanting more. There are many dishes for varying palettes. Can't choose? No worries. The deluxe bento box gives you all the flavors: miso soup, green salad, chicken teriyaki, shrimp and veggie tempura, gyoza, sashimi, California roll, and rice. Yes, big enough to share or at least offer bites to worthy friends. Sushi has always been spot on and very fresh. Also the beer, wine and saki menu has a good assortment of choices. The chefs and service staff have always been helpful and attentive.The atmosphere is light and there is indoor and outdoor seating.
