It has been a few years since I have reviewed Kona cafe. It really was not my favorite, however after going back a couple times in the last few months I think my mind is being changed. They have updated their menu across the board and I have to say they are actually pretty good. Over the last couple months we have been there for breakfast twice and will be going for lunch in the next couple weeks. We most recently took my mom and dad there for breakfast and both of them enjoyed it as well. Kona cafe is located at the Polynesian resort, and if you want to park at the resort you are going to need a dining reservation. You could probably get lucky and do a walk up without having a reservation, however you are not going to be able to actually park at the resort with the way Disney has increased security. We had a reservation and since my mom and dad have a handicap pass we also got valet parking for free. Kona cafe is located on the second floor of the main building. It is a smaller restaurant, but has a good number of seats, and it is pretty open so you can see all of the lobby and such. I don't love getting a table right along the railing, as everyone who walks by looks over and stares at your food. We also visited for a later breakfast with some friends since we wanted to do a monorail crawl. Our last two visits were breakfast and I did order the same thing both times but they were absolutely delicious. The first thing I ordered was the acai bowl, thinking I wanted to get something a little lighter and fresh. I thought that the acai could be a little thicker and it was more of an acai soup, but it was still really tasty, full of fruit and full of granola. The first time I ordered it we had a very late breakfast so I kind of chalked it up to it just being later and then getting close to stopping breakfast. However the second time I ordered it it was pretty much the same, maybe a little bit colder and a little bit thicker. I have a feeling the first time I ordered it it sat under a heat lamp waiting for the rest of our party's food. It is topped with lots of different fresh fruit, granola and macadamia nuts. It is also a huge bowl and really good. I also ordered a side of bacon because Disney bacon is phenomenal, and my tip is to ask for it crispy. They also have gouda grits which are just fantastic. They are thicker, which I love and honestly just so good I can't even recommend them enough. On our last visit my husband decided to try a classic Hawaiian dish and ordered the loco moco. He was a little nervous about how it would be, but absolutely loved it saying he would get it again. I tried it as well and also really enjoyed it. My parents ordered two of their other classic breakfast dishes, one being the macadamia nut pancakes and the other their Tonga toast. The pancakes were filled with macadamia nuts, and the portion was three huge thick pancakes. We actually brought some home and ate it the next morning. The Tonga toast is their classic sourdough French toast stuffed with bananas. I have always heard about this but never tried it and I have to say it was really good. Overall I think this restaurant does not get enough credit. I myself had put it as a place I didn't really love, but I foresee my husband and I going here more frequently. Their prices are not that bad especially for breakfast, so I think that is when we would visit. We do have a lunch reservation coming up with the family in a couple weeks and I am looking forward to trying some of their food. Overall I think this is a great place to grab a meal before the parks or before your monorail crawl. read more

I'm really conflicted on what to give Kona Cafe. Our breakfasts, when they did finally come, were really, really good. But, there were some major mis-steps too. Here's a rundown: We did make a reservation and arrived about 5 minutes before the time. Even then, we had to wait about 15 minutes. Then, we were seated, but it took a long time to order. And, while we had an allergy, the food took a very long time to come out too. We didn't get our food until almost an hour after checking in, which was pretty disappointing; our young kids were LOSING IT. We watched tables come in after us, order, get their food, and leave before we got our food. We ordered a press pot. We miss that many Disney restaurants no longer have them. The one here was...disappointing. There were grounds in the coffee, making it not very enjoyable. The quality seemed to have slipped too. The food, when it finally arrived (again, almost an hour after checking in), was very good. I'm thankful they were able to make a dairy-free Tonga Toast that was also not GF, it was sooooo good. The rest of the family also liked their food. The server and manager, while ultimately comping our coffee, didn't really make up for the long, long wait for the food. Where do I begin?!.. My best friend came to Orlando with her family. We made plans to spend time together for breakfast on the day they were flying back home. We decided to make reservations at Kona Cafe. We look at the menu, and wanted to enjoy their selection without having to do a whole buffet/character dining on Disney property. First- construction is a mission. Even with an email warning, the traffic and detour was a mission. So ok, we stilll arrive on time to our reservation. We check in, and we're sat down pretty quickly. We were a party of 6. The table they gave us was a round table for a party of 5. All the chairs and our knees were literally touching eachother. That already should have foreshadowed how this was going to go. We sat down at 10:15am. Ordered with the server within the first 10minutes. We get our drinks. And wait. And wait. The table behind us leaves. A new family of 5 sits. Orders. We continue waiting. The new family behind us gets ALL their food. Our server, then checks in saying "your food should be right out". We literally ordered breakfast. Eggs. Toast. Pancakes. Nothing out of the norm. Ok. Keep waiting. We then ask the server for an update. She checks. Food then starts arriving. In parts. Sides were missing. Then extra sides were given. By the time we got our food, it was 11:30am. It was AN HOUR to receive breakfast food that they are constantly making all morning. All while the party behind us was essentially done. The eggs were not hot. The pancakes were stale. The meat was overcooked. It was the most disappointing experience. We definitely called over the f&b manager, and she was nice enough to discount a meal from our check. But honestly, the damage was done. As grateful as we were for that, we did not enjoy the meal, were extremely let down with the entire situation. Not even with us explaining that the entire delay caused my friend and her family to have to be in a rush to catch their flight. Not at all impressed with this spot. Good enough these days though we've thoroughly enjoyed better times here to be sure. We've been visiting for years and years, namely for breakfast but we've also been for lunch, and dinner. It's such a special place for us and a Great way to start a lazy day in the park. French press coffee's always a thing, Love that Tonga toast, and of course, missing the pork sammy though you can get it in Capt. Cooks just don't try to mobile order unless you're a guest. Passholders don't count. lol Ordered a Bloody Mary last time in, never got it. Kāmau Anyway, everything changes and I'll say my reverence for the Big Kahuna isn't found in the Poly Egg Platter that's replaced it. Used to come with French toast and pancakes and two eggs any style (not liquid eggs) and home fries and ham and bacon and sausage. Damn! New Poly egg platter costs $$$ more and you get a whole lot less; it's only mini pancakes, two eggs any style (liquid scrambled eggs if you order them scrambled), and ham, or Spam, or bacon, or sausage. And the fact that they're resorting to using liquid scrambled eggs kills it for me. It's disappointing, really. Sort of feels like I mIght as well have been at the Holiday Inn. Loco Moco wasn't any better for me when I tried to switch it up. Hamburgers with liquid scrambled eggs? Bleh Prolly in Poly just for coffee the next few times around; maybe get a few breakfast sides. One of my favorite things to do at Disney is to check out all of the different resorts! The Polynesian Village Resort has the ultimate tropical vibes! The atmosphere transports you to another world & with that comes delicious Polynesian eats & treats! The service at the Kona Café is professional & friendly; and they will go out of their way to give a great dining experience for everyone; with no limits regardless of any dietary restrictions! You have to get sushi here to share with the table; and their seasonal soups are always a hit! This place was fun but not somewhere I'd want to go again. The food was fine but nothing that really grabbed me and made me absolutely have to come back. Service was great! She even tried to get the cooks to make my food spicy but they clearly didn't have the ingredients for it because it still came out mild at best. The decor is pretty boring but we did enjoy shopping at the shops while we waited for our reservation. We went to Kona on a Tuesday night and it was PACKED! Our reservation was for 6:30 and we didn't get sat til 6:45 although we came around 6:08pm. The food itself was very good we got: Potstickers: 4/5 the sauce and crisp was wonderful. Bread (complimentary) 5/5 the butter was delightful Lapu Lapu: 3/5 great for photos but a bit on the weaker side alcohol wise. Wings: 5/5 perfect crisp and flavor NY Strip: 4/5 great flavors and sauces Crab and shrimp Mac and cheese: 3/5 I wish there was more crab. I'd be willing to pay more if it had more crab in the portion. Bread pudding: 5/5 very yum! The service was a bit slow and it took us about 20 minutes to get our bill after our meal. The fish tasted fresh on the Rainbow Roll and there were a few bites of the Fire Cracker Roll that had a kick, but something was missing. Pork shank: Per hubby, "Didn't have a lot of taste, I would not order it again". Ambiance: Fun decor, but it was a little hot (visited in April). The temperature, plus the noise volume was a bit over stimulating for me. Lots of families having dinner, which is great to see, volume reflected that audience. We ordered two açaí bowls, two Stitch smoothies, and macadamia nut pancakes to share. The waitress kindly let us order the pancakes à la carte instead of as an entree (our kids had been gorging on carbs and meat during our vacation so we wanted to limit the pancakes!). The Stitch smoothies were yummy and tasted bright and citrusy from the pineapple, each drink came topped with cute white chocolate Stitch ears. The smoothies come out being a very Stitch-appropriate shade of blue! The açaí bowls were fine; a little bit more melted and liquidy than I typically like my acai bowls. The pancakes were yummy but not quite as fluffy as I've had. It took a bit of a trek to get here, but food and service were both fine. It's a bit out of the way when visiting the park so not sure we'd come again but we were happy with our experience here. read more

While Ohana often gets the attention at the Polynesian Resort, we have found this restaurant to be one of our absolute favorites on the entire Disney World property. We went for lunch with friends and tried some new items and classics. They offer the noodles we love from Ohana, and some seasonal dishes, as well as amazing sushi. We had the bao buns for an app and their pineapple rolls with sea salt butter are delicious. The stand out this visit was the turkey Bánh mì with the purple potato salad (with sweet potato but not super sweet in flavor) this sandwich was huge and so fresh. The pate had amazing pepper flavor and the shaved carrots and arugula added that crunch. The bread was amazing texture and flavor and the spicy mayo with the fresh jalapeños were perfect spice kick. Overall this sandwich was memorable. Loved our waitress and always have the best service. If you want to try a fun spot with great Hawaiian flavor, give this place a try. I know there's been lukewarm reviews but I had a really good meal there .. .. Yes, it took 30 minutes to get seated after checking-in but the service was friendly .. .. The CHAR SHU DUCK looked intriguing and my waiter agreed .. .. It was delicious and savory .. .. We had an amazing experience at Kona Cafe! We had a reservation for a Sunday morning at 9:30 and it was the perfect time. It wasn't too busy when we were seated. Our server was amazing! I am not great at keeping track of names but I need to start paying more attention! I eat gluten free and they are SO ACCOMMODATING at Disney. She asked if I was comfortable talking to her or if I would prefer to talk to the chef. They have tickets that they write allergens on to ensure the kitchen is well aware. The kitchen does take some extra time to cook your meal because they are very conscientious of allergies to ensure that nothing is cross contaminated. We were sat and ordered before a table next to us, but they got their food 5-10 minutes before we did. No worries! We had to get some POG (pineapple, orange, guava) juice! Fricken delicious and refreshing! I ordered the gluten free Polynesian egg platter and it was the perfect amount of food! It was very filling, and nice to have the fruit to lighten it up and a little donut for dessert! The donut is from Erin McKenna's bakery and is free of 7 or 9 of the top allergens. I cannot remember! It was very good donut for being so free of allergens. My boyfriend ordered the Loco Moco and it was crazy delicious! So beyond grateful we could walk right in to Kona Cafe and be seated in 10 minutes on Mother's Day. I got the pineapple drink but without alcohol. It was fair. Not great somehow. Our server was so kind and brought us a knife to cut up and enjoy the pineapple so it didn't go to waste. I got the rainbow poke bowl at the recommendation from the server. It was honestly so sticky I had a hard time eating it. My son got the bad buns and crab and shrimp Mac and cheese. They were delicious! For dessert I got the molton chocolate cake. It was our first time dining here. The Poly is a beautiful resort. We went for breakfast and only waited 10 minutes to be seated, but it seemed like it took an eternity to get our food. It was 1 hour and 10 minutes from check in until we signed the bill. I'm not sure if that's normal or not, but we really like our waitress and didn't have any other plans for the day so the wait wasn't an issue. The Tonga Toast was thick....like thiccc but the syrup and cold strawberry compote soaked right in. I enjoyed it and I liked the strawberry with the warm banana center. It also came with a pile of bacon. I don't mean 1-2 sad little floppy pieces, but a mini stack of crispy bacon which is my favorite breakfast meat! The ham and cheese omelet was really good too! Kona Cafe is located in Disney's Polynesian resort and we have been for dinner in the past and the cuisine here is mixture of Pan-Asian with South Pacific. But I kept on hearing about their breakfast so we decided to give it a chance and booked a reservation. We were seated right away and my wife requested a bowl of fresh fruit chunks that included pineapples, strawberries, papaya, and grapes. For the our main dish I ordered their famous Tonga toast with spiced ham (spam), egg platter with macadamia nut butter pancakes, Mickey pancakes and a side of cheesy grits. The pancakes were very sweet and fluffy while each plates came with tasty and crunchy breakfast potatoes. The eggs and cheesy grits were also solids and good quality. But the star of the meal was the Tonga toast which was banana stuffed sourdough French toasted drenched in Cinnamon sugar. It was moist and when topped with the strawberry sauce it really enhances the flavors. My only complaint of Tonga toast was that it was a massive sugar and carb overdose. Because we are always down for anything Hawaiian related. --- --- --- For our final meal of our long weekend vacation in Orlando, we headed to Kona Cafe before I took the wife and kiddo to the airport and then transitioned into work mode for an event I was in town for. The good news: we really enjoyed our meal here. The bad news: I'm too old to eat a bunch of pancakes before a long day of work. My wife and I shared a loco moco and some macadamia nut pancakes. We enjoyed both of them, despite the loco moco being a bit different than any we've ever had. I think it might have been the salsa on top that threw us off? Either way, it was enjoyable, but just different. The macadamia nut pancakes were also a bit different, in that, they had pineapple on top. I didn't dislike it, it was just not what I was expecting. We had the bao buns and potstickers for an app ( along with the delicious pineapple bread to start) and salmon and teriyaki burger for our entrees. Salmon was cooked perfectly and tastes great! The teriyaki burger was ok but the pork belly on it was not great. Very reasonable priced for a sit down food option. One thing to note, they do to-go orders to with a partial menu. My husband and I went to Kona for lunch. I think we both like the menu for breakfast and dinner better, but we still had a positive experience. The location is great, and we had a wonderful server. They start you off with Hawaiian rolls and butter. We got the seasonal soup, which was very tasty. This past weekend, it was a corn bisque with a chili lime crema. It sounds weird, but it was good! For his main he got the steak salad and I would get that again. I got the teriyaki noodle stir-fry. This is probably the best bang for your buck, lots of food! The poke bowl sounded good but the table next to us got it, and it looked very small, I think I would have still been hungry. After a long day of hanging out and laughing with the family, we made reservations for dinner following the fireworks show at Magic Kingdom. We ended our night at the Polynesian Resort and dined at Kona Café. This restaurant inside the Polynesian is incredibly themed, featuring bright colors, enchanting decor, and gorgeous lighting. Our service was exceptional for a Disney resort. Our drinks, appetizers, and food arrived in an orderly fashion. The bao buns were soft and airy, packed with delightful flavors. The sushi was fresh and beautifully prepared and presented. Both meats we ordered were tender and fresh. Honestly, everything we tried was excellent. We decided to stop in Kona Cafe before the day at Magic Kingdom. It was on a Sunday and we parked at Magic Kingdom, rode the shuttle to the Magic Kingdom and before going through security we headed to the left to the sidewalk leading to the Polynesian resort. Sunday about 10:30am, we walked up and did not have reservations. We had a 10 minute wait and then seating in their VIP booth. What a way to start the day! The service was excellent. I had the Polynesian egg breakfast with the spicy ham (spiced spam). What a full dish. Everything was excellent. The perfect meal if you like a little of everything. My husband had the Tonga toast and a pile of bacon. The Tonga toast looked like a brick of bread and oh my it was delicious especially when you add the raspberry sauce. Ambience was great and service was excellent from the moment we sat down. We had the best experience before walking back to Magic Kingdom to start the day at the park. The two top table we were sat at was up against a boothed wall. The booth smelled like a "left in your car hamburger bag" for days. In fact, there was a wadded up food bag in the gap next to me but not behind me. The gap from seat cushion to back hasn't been vacuumed out for ...? The waitress was fakey nice, we had to ask for straws three times before she dropped one off. The two top next to us were making comments about her and the food, how downhill it has been in the several years. The food, there was nothing Polynesian about any dish on the menu, when we asked "happy" about that she said Disney decided to have an Asian flare instead of actual Polynesian influence. Big mistake on their part as well as the other customers that dropped into our conversation. The food was about two stars. And ridiculous for the high price. It was not a dining experience. The high priced dessert was a half dollar size soggy cookie with a flavorless dollop of moose on top for $10. We sat there forever waiting for a refill and then our bill. Now who doesn't go to the restroom to freshen up after their meal? Well, the restroom smelled like urine, and there was a long extremely slow line to get into a stall... why, you ask? Because women that came over from the tram were in the bathroom stalls changing themselves and their children into swimsuits to use the pool when they weren't staying at the Polynesian. Each mother had 1-3 kids to change while elderly, wheelchairs and the rest of us waited and waited in line. There is no checks, no staff, no nothing to prevent this. I was so disappointed in our Polynesian experience and we know we don't want to stay at this resort when we come back. My first time at the Polynesian. What a gorgeous property! Everything we ate was delicious and fresh. I ordered a lapu lapu , and requested the 151 to be on the side. Good thing, the drink was strong, so my husband ordered chicken added it to his drink. Our server was okay, friendly, attentive but average. The ambiance was also average, pretty plain compared to the other restaurants on the property. Will plan better next time and try some of the other places. read more

Wow all the times we've been at the Polynesian & never went here. Make a reservation they fill up, we went for breakfast, I think the last time is 1030 then they start switching over to lunch. Hub had the Loco Moco, he fell in love with it in Hawaii & it's hard to find here. I had the Tonga Toast (banana filled) & ham, ham was meh, Tonga Toast was YUMMY, saw it too many times watching You Tube. They bring you a coffee pot so you're not looking for refills. read more

Pros: Beautifully themed restaurant in the middle of the beautiful Polynesian resort. Very islandy vibe. Very chill. Service was on-brand A+ Disney. Prompt service, refilled drinks, perfect. Food was good. Very fun, giant hunk of French toast. A nice breakfast platter option for those who like variety. Cons: The giant hunk of French toast was a little dry, even with the strawberry goo it came with. Portion sizes were a little small. Classic Disney. Tips: Don't just pour the goo all over the French toast. Cut it up first, so the goo can permeate all the way through. Get the Spam. It's so good! read more

Grabbed takeout shrimp tempura sushi while sitting at the bar next door. Super quick and easy to order on the app, bag was ready for pickup fast, and included soy sauce, napkins and utensils. When you walk into the Polynesian Resort you're taken back with the hotels ambiance. You're automatically greeted with Aloha when you get inside the hotel. Kona Cafe is located on the second floor and it's next to Ohana restaurant. The service was wonderful. I got the Tonga Toast and Bacon, spectacular. The Tonga toast is French toast with cinnamon sugar on the outside stuffed with bananas inside, served with a strawberry compote and syrup on the side. Also, My mom ordered the Polynesian egg platter which is two eggs any style with fresh fruit poke, fresh-baked muffin, home-fried potatoes, and your choice of Ham, Spiced Ham, Bacon, or Sausage. My mom was able to replace the muffin with toast. Also, they had seasonal pancakes that included pumpkin/ pumpkin spice. All around the breakfast was delicious. Nestled on the second floor of the Polynesian is a small restaurant that serves breakfast lunch and dinner. The breakfast menu is simple but gets the job done for a quick easy breakfast with the family. When on a Disney vacation this is a good option to get a quick sit down meal before you head to the park. The Tonga toast is solid. Of course as a Disney restaurant they do a great job of taking care of the kids and the family while being understanding. The price can be a little much for breakfast but it's Disney so what do you expect in the land of $5 cokes. read more

Was a huge fan of this place but today was served sour OJ and the turkey bacon was as hard as shoe leather. Really disappointed in the meal. Seems like the quality of the food has taken a huge nose dive. read more
