Molokai is a fun fast place to grab lunch. I like to get their sushi burritos sometimes to satisfy a craving during the work week. As I think this may be obvious, the fish is nothing amazing, the last time I got a spicy tuna burrito, and found something strange in the fish mixture, hopefully a one time incident that hopefully won't happen again, but does take a star off. The fish was fresh and the roll had great flavor. I loved all of it except that it wasn't rolled tightly enough and just fell apart. I ended up having to use utensils to eat it as everything kept falling out. But great flavor. After we were done, which was past their closing time, the manager greeted us at the door and you could tell was really grateful we came in, even if it was late. I went yesterday to get my birthday reward entree. I LOVE motomaki, it's one of my favorite places but yesterday's bowl fell sad and flat. I ordered the shrimp tempura, which is a staple for me. We pulled up to Motomaki after a long day of back to school shopping and were greeted by nice staff who were eager to help. The man who took our order was informative and helped us make decisions on what was best for us and our little one. The place overall wasn't too packed for a Friday night and is decently sized and there was nice music playing that was fun to sing along to. We each did a build your own, our daughter got a bowl and we each got wraps and filled them with cucumbers, spicy tuna, kimchi and so on! The kimchi was SOOO fresh and delicious, I was pleasantly surprised and it was nice to taste the flavor of everything individually and as it blended together. My first visit recently exceeded my expectations. I really didn't know much about this place and frankly thought it was a sushi place until I saw the poke description on Yelp. At arrival, I was also pleased that they offered rolls and not just poke bowls. I ordered the Hamachi Crunch Roll and enjoyed it. It included Hamachi poke, grilled asparagus, spicy sprouts, crispy opinions, tempura crunch, sriracha aioli and ponzu all wrapped in seaweed paper. It wasn't as spicy as I expected, sour and zest flavors came through strongly, but still pretty tasty. My roll did not have the same girth as my companion's Shrimp Tempura Roll, which was disappointing, but still filled my belly. The inside was spacious, but could use some attention. Be warned, the menu prices shown on yelp are not representative of the restaurant. You will not find items for 10 or $11. Most items are around $13-$14. Drinks are three dollars. I love sushi and poke so this should be right up my alley. Even though I eat Japanese all the time this is the first time I've had it in burrito form. In general the eating process is very messy and falls apart . I highly recommend the bowl. There is a reason Japanese people cut their food up in small portions. The ingredients for the most part were good but obviously it's a different target audience compared to a sit down restaurant. You order from a kiosk and the order process is very impersonal. Even though my wife had food allergies and we marked the order as such the workers were very uninformed about allergies in their ingredients. Overall just an average experience with overpriced food. Some food for thought. You need to create a customer experience. When a customer walks in the door employees should be greeting them not engaged in personal conversation. Employees should be wiping the kiosks down between uses. They were very dirty with fingerprints. The kiosk were also awkwardly placed. This was confusing for a new customer. Some simple signage or assistance from the employees would have been helpful. Go above and beyond and maybe even have the employees open the door for customers.
