I really enjoy coming to this ramen spot. The service is always very friendly and very fast. The crispy tuna appetizer is not the best I've ever had, but still very crispy and a bit spicy. We come here for a quick and yummy ramen fix. I always get the tonkatsu ramen with extra bamboo shoots, and my boyfriend gets the black tonkatsu ramen. I like to steal a couple of spoonfuls of his broth and add it to mine, just because I like the added depth it gives, without being an entire bowl of that flavor. The noodles are always cooked well and they are VERY generous with their portioning of chasu pork (which is rare for ramen shops lol). Their pork is also VERY delicious. Second time here. First was good. Second time was this past Saturday - we got food poisoning from the dragon rolls. We took my son and his friends for his bday and thankfully most of the kids got ramen and were fine. My son his dad and I shared a few orders of the dragon roll and were vomiting 24 hour later. His dad and I aren't together so that was the only meal we shared which is how I know this happened at kontensu with the dragon roll specifically. The restaurant refunded us our sushi (I think they should have refunded the whole bill) and stated they were going to reach out to their suppliers which was good but that was a gnarly 36 hours of sickness! I've been wanting to come here for the longest time! As winter is slowly coming to an end, I'm trying to take advantage of the cold weather and enjoy all the ramen I could eat before summer starts. First of all, I really loved the ambiance- it felt cozy and they had the cutest aesthetics. (See pictures for reference) We waited for about 10 minutes to be seated, they were packed so it was understood. For appetizers, we ordered the spicy tuna crispy rice, and their new sizzling albacore. The crispy rice was fluffy with the perfect amount of crisp, not to mention the tuna was fresh! The sizzling albacore was good, I just wished I paid attention to the menu so I could substitute the crab for tuna. I really like the sizzling jalapeño, onion and garlic mixture which comes on top, it added a nice crunch and it was flavorful ! For our Ramen, we both ordered the spicy miso ramen and must I say- it's really hard to find a ramen joint that prepares their pork nice and charred. We have personally rated/ reviewed over 10 ramen joints in L.A and this has to be on our top list. This place had THE BEST CHARRED PORK. I normally give my portion to my boyfriend because most places serve it mushy/ bland but this time around I ordered extra..... EXTRA!!! I was in a complete shock, IT WAS SO GOOD! Nice and charred on the outside and juicy on the inside. Their serving size is HUGE, price is reasonable and they gave a generous amount of broth (which I was obsessed about) but all in all I loved the overall flavor, I couldn't get enough!!! Definitely try the spicy miso ramen! Their service was okay, not great. Everyone was friendly and nice but they forgot to put in our order of Brussel sprouts and they forgot to bring our toppings; but again, it was understood as they were busy. We reminded the server twice, the second time around he was really nice about it and apologized. We didn't get the sprouts as it was close to last call but he brought our toppings! Next time around I'm sure it'll be a better experience. This place deserves a 5 star, although our service could've been better, the over taste of the food compensated for it! If you're going to go, make sure to not go on a busy night like we did and instead, go earlier. If you're going around 7pm- 8pm on a weekend, expect to wait. Best Ramen in Montrose ...or even maybe in Los Angeles?! I just went to a famous Ramen place in Little Tokyo, and it did not compare to Kontentsu! My favorite is the Spicy Tonkotsu and my husband's is the Tonkotsu Black. And the spicy edamame are delicious! We generally get it delivered, but I've been to the restaurant several times and it' has a very nice ambience with an excellent wait staff . We had a friends reunion (thanks quarantine) in over a year and this place was so perfect! Especially loved the sweet outdoor patio that feels safe and private, with a nice view of the mountains! This place felt so safe to dine-in. They also take your temperature for extra measure. On to the ramen -- I had the normal Tonkotsu ramen which was pretty good. Especially liked that their meat (chashu or chicken) were both crispy! This made it different than other ramen places. Broth was flavorful, although perhaps a bit too salty and I couldn't taste much of the truffle oil. I also was not bothered by the MSG (so probably just a little bit or none) after the meal! Mom was given the choice of birthday lunch and her immediate reply was, "Ramen." Coming from the Descanso Gardens, two popped out immediately on my Yelp search. The only reason this one won out is because we preferred the menu far better. Parking right up front (SCORE!) There were no other customers inside other than my party of 3, so that's good for us. (But being it a nice warm SoCal day, there were a some who opted for outdoor seating.) Since we were the only ones indoors PLUS we took a look at the menu beforehand (so we knew exactly what we wanted) we were able to put in our orders not even two minutes after we were seated. Three orders of tonkotsu black and a side of spider slider. SPIDER SLIDER: aka deep-fried soft-shelled crabs situated in between soft almost-fluffy slider buns. Made to order, the batter was thin, however, needed a bit more umph. It lacked a bit of flavor and it didn't help that the soy reduction came off a bit strong and took a bit away from the crab's main essence. It wasn't horrible, but it can be a little better. TONKOTSU BLACK: I'm a garlic fiend, so I stopped reading the rest of the bowl options soon as I saw this. Ordered it with braised pork chasu which was prepped and cooked tender and juicy. There wasn't a hint of dryness and the fat melted into the hot-hot broth which elevated the flavor to another level. They were also incredibly generous with the amount of pork they gave for each bowl! I loved that they used thin noodles (which is my personal preference) and was cooked perfect. The broth, as mentioned earlier, was hot and naturally came with that garlic aroma. I had depth and was delicious. Egg was a perfect soft boil. FOOD: 4. SERVICE: 4. We were given the perfect amount of attention. Granted, we were the only ones inside, we didn't feel stalked or ignored. VALUE: 4. More than fair for what you get. PARKING: Private lot shared with others. It wasn't an issue on a Monday lunch rush. OVERALL: 4. It was a good first run and Mom was happy with her birthday lunch. We came here for dinner with friends. Since they don't accept reservations, I recommend getting here at 5 when they open so you don't have wait to be seated. We arrived about 4:55P...the host said we could seat ourselves, but they were still setting up so it may be a few minutes before our server came to take our orders. He appeared just as we had decided on what to order. I ordered the Kara-age Chicken Curry Don. Crispy Chicken served on top of rice with curry. Initially I thought there wouldn't be enough curry for the amount of rice. I was pleasantly surprised...yes it could have a used a spoonful more. I love curry! A friend and I were pleasantly surprised by this unassuming La Crescenta eatery. To be honest, I saw the name pop up on Yelp a lot and assumed it was the ramen place in La Canada that replaced Pinkberry, but I'm glad I double checked the address, because it most definitely is not. I got the black garlic ramen, while my friend got the spicy tonkotsu ramen, and we split a roll. All were of good quality with a rich broth that isn't overly oily. Also pleasantly surprising is that we received two thick pork slices in our bowl. I feel like we're usually accustomed to getting only one? I would be the wrong person to ask about authenticity, but it was a good bowl of soup. The roll was also surprisingly fresh. I just finished eating dinner with my young daughter and husband, and I left with a feeling of disgust. Dinner was ruined by the lack of service. I can't even say terrible service because there was none. The person assigned to serve our table was John. After he took our order, he NEVER came by to check on us. We were there on Friday at 5pm. The place was not even busy so there was no excuse. I ordered a side of plain noodles for my daughter but as we waited while eating our food, it did not arrive. I went up to the register to ask the other servers to check on it. 10 minutes had passed and I didn't hear back so I sent my husband up to the register. A while later, the noodles finally came out. I realized there was no fork for her to eat with. So I went up to the register again and asked for a fork. I waited at our table for another 10min. No fork. I sent my husband up to the register for a fork and they finally brought one over. I realized we didn't have plates for our appetizer but at this point I was over it. We were ready to leave. We waited 15 min for our check but of course, nothing. I went up to the register to pay and left 0 tip for the most unprofessional, uninterested, rude server John. To note, this was my first time leaving 0 tip and that says a lot. I don't know why they don't screen or train their servers well. Not sure where to begin but let's go with the Ramen brittle Green Tea Ice cream. Yes, dessert first for the review ha! The ramen brittle was unexpectedly gooood. When I saw it on the menu, I had no clue what it meant... just another unique eats to try. The green tea flavoring of the ice cream was REALLY light. Good texture though. It's bigger than it looks on the menu. I was eating solo for dinner and since I already had a huge ramen, I couldn't finish it. I think it was a serving for 3 people after each person eating a huge ramen. For the ramen I had the tonkotsu black and added some spice to it. It's a large serving. Kontentsu is a hidden gem in the quaint village of Montrose. Tucked in the Angeles Crest hills, it almost has views of dtla except for the building in front it blocking the view. The restaurant is located on the second floor. Currently, during covid they only provide outdoor dining on their balcony. On a Friday night, the wait was only 5 minutes. Our waitress was very nice and helpful with us as we struggled to make dinner selections. We decided on the spicy albacore sushi roll and the veggie ramen, curry rice, and salad. Okay hi. My friends and I hadn't seen each other all summer and we wanted to catch up on everything, especially since we all go to different high schools and have different extracurriculars. My friend suggested Kontentsu and everyone agreed. I'm not usually a big fan of Japanese food so I was a bit hesitant at first but they have lots of options on the menu! I got the pork katsu and oh my goodness it was delicious! Very nice portions for the price especially. It came with rice, some cabbage I think, a side of curry and some sauces. My friends tried some of it and they all thought it was good as well, and everyone seemed to enjoy their meal. Our waiter was great! Service was quick and he was very patient with us since it was most of our first time there so we didn't know what we wanted. There's quite a few drink options and our server was kind enough to make sure we understood everything on the menu. He was great! The restaurant itself didn't have very many people (we came around 1:15 pm on a Saturday) but the decorations and lighting itself was very fun! They had both regular menus and a QR code for the ones online, which I thought was nice since now they usually just offer one or the other. This place used to be my go-to because they made everything fresh and they didn't skimp out on the meat/fish. Unfortunately that's no longer the case. The past few times I've been there, the sushi was cold and congealed, as if it was premade and refrigerated before service. And the katsu pork was mostly breading with meat paste, not actual cuts of pork. They clearly ground up the pork meat and pressed it thin before cooking it.
