A new and very good Thai restaurant. The greeting is warm and welcoming, and the food is terrific. Fresh tasting and properly spiced to order. We had moon dumplings ( deep fried and stuffed with pork) which were delicious. Also corn and shrimp balls, the spring rolls, and the chicken satay. All very good and with very generous portions. The mains were every bit as good. We tried several. Pad Thai, Pad See Ew, my new favorite, Drunken Noodle ( one of best the versions I've had!) and spicy eggplant. Its a family operation, everything is cooked to order so there might be a small wait-- but it's worth it. The prices are modest too! We will be back. And we will be bringing our friends. Chicken Pad Thai is my barometer for all Thai restaurants that I try for the first time. Their Pad Thai was delicious. It's a little pricier than some other restaurant's lunch dishes, but worth it. I have certainly had much better Thai food, but Koon Thai is reasonably good for the price and I really appreciate that you can adjust the spice level. The reason I won't order from here again is the delivery time. I was craving Thai food one night, and Pho Ketkao (what I had bookmarked) was closed, so found this place nearby. Bf and I walked into an empty restaurant at 8pm on a Friday night, but that's New Haven in the summertime I guess bc school's out. ORDER - 3 Flavored curry: Loaded with bamboo shoots and potatoes. Yum! Not enough rice for the amount of curry though, and ended up taking half the curry home. Bf chose medium spiciness and it was perfect for him, but unbearable for me. - Pad see ew: my go-to at all thai restaurants. Pretty good. Wished there was more broccoli, but no biggie. I love the taste of fish sauce. Yum! I chose mild and there was still some heat to it. The waiter forgot we ordered crab wontons as apps, but it's ok bc the amount of food we got was more than enough. We weren't charged for it either. Bathroom has a code to get into. Overall, it wasn't the best thai food we've ever had (especially having lived in NYC), but acceptable. Bf commented that for the number of Thai restaurants in the New Haven area, he was surprised that all of them are mediocre. I ordered the pad see ew from Koon yesterday and did not enjoy it at all. It lacked sauce and contained so much beans and carrots (more so than the noodles) which were uncooked and hard to eat. Also the fried tofu was soggy and not crispy at all. The dish was wholly flavorless (the complete opposite of Thai cuisine and especially pad see ew). I always try to read a few reviews before ordering from a new place. I'm glad I didn't listen to the ones trying to deflect business. One of the better dim sum menus in new haven. My husband and I and two friends came here the other night for dinner. The place is relatively small so we had to wait a bit for a table to open up. We looked at the menu while we waited and pretty much had our food orders in mind when we were finally seated. Our table had benches for seats which are okay except you have no place to put coats/purses. We ordered 3 appetizers and each of us got an entree. The owner warned us that the spring rolls are made-to-order so they take a little longer. They took a lot longer and they were very big (kind of hard to eat, not that flavorful) but if an appetizer takes that long to make, maybe shrink it or don't offer something slow as an appetizer. My friend ordered the crab rangoon which she enjoyed. I tried the pork dumplings and they were SUPER fried, like mostly breading and a teeny bit of pork. My husband and I agreed it needed a better ratio of meat-to-breading. Dinner finally came! Well, not mine. Our dinners came out completely scattered. One friend got hers, then my husband, then my other friend, then me SEVERAL minutes later. I ordered pineapple fried rice which was pretty good (I'd probably leave out the cashews, flavor wise). It was a good-sized portion too. At the end, since our food was kind of delayed and disorganized a little, the owner did bring us complimentary bubble teas which was a nice gesture. Sadly, since they're made with milk I couldn't have one :( It was nice of her to acknowledge things were moving slowly. A sad, sad excuse for a Pad Kee Mao dish. When you first enter the Koon Thai establishment, you get hit with a sickly sweet fried smell. I ordered a takeout Pad Kee Mao/Drunken Noodles from Koon Thai via Snackpass, and ended up sorely disappointed. I do not know if I should attribute this to the poor quality of the restaurant or if their takeout options are more poorly executed than in-store dining. When I opened up the takeout dish, the little bowl was only half-filled, and the ingredients seemed shrunken and shriveled. I already knew not to expect generous portion sizes when I felt the lightness of the takeout bag. Yet I was still taken aback - $10 dollars for a couple strips of tofu and some fried noodles?? There were also some carrots, bell peppers, onions, and green beans. For the same price I could have gotten a literal PLATTER of delicious, spicy Drunken Noodle goodness from Pad Thai just four blocks north. This is the worst deal in all of New Haven. The flavor itself was weak; it tasted like a mere hint of what drunken noodles should truly taste like. If you want to try authentic Pad Kee Mao, the restaurants that make the best Pad Kee Mao are Pad Thai and what was formerly known as Thai Taste (both on Chapel). Pad Kee Mao / Drunken Noodles should be fiery and spicy, with each bite bolder than the next, leaving you craving for more. Koon Thai's drunken noodles were the exact opposite, like oversugared American Thai food. The noodle strips themselves were flimsy and lacked a satisfying bite. The tofu was kind of tasty, but they only included 4 pieces of tofu in the entire drunken noodles dish. The most disappointing thing was the lack of spiciness and savoriness reminiscent of an authentically Thai Pad Kee Mao. I would only recommend Koon Thai if you love mediocre Americanized Thai food and cannot be bothered to walk the two extra blocks to Jeera Thai or Pad Thai. read more

The best Thai restaurant in New Haven ever!! I have tried so many Thai places here, but this one really hit me. The green curry was great, if you like spicy food. My friend also liked the Pad Thai. Just one small thing for future improvement: if the fresh spring rolls could be cut into smaller pieces, the dinner would be perfect. The place was also a big stuffy. We were so happy to try the food at Koon Thai during our visit to New Haven. Everything that we ordered here has flavor thats perfectly well balanced. The service was so GREAT and A WARM WELCOME. I read the reviews beforehand and ordered on a day I wasn't in a rush. My experience reflected the other reviewers' comments about speed- it is true that this business should be more honest and realistic when predicting the wait time. The wait ended up being twice the original estimate because both the restaurant and 3rd party delivery were slow. I hope they work out their timing issues as I really want this place to stick around. The food was priced and portioned right and was super tasty. I especially love how they prepare their tofu- every single bite was chewy perfection, and the amount of protein in each dish was so generous. Takeout is usually a special treat for us, but because the prices are fair here, we'll be able to order again soon (and we can't wait!). Most importantly, I was so thankful to discover that options without fish sauce are integrated into the menu. Other Thai places in the area either don't offer this at all or you have to make a special request, which is annoying for all involved. It is clear that fish-less options are normal for this place and it made me feel really confident ordering from them. It's also rare for me to have such a variety to choose from, as other places tend to limit the dishes they're willing to modify. My wife and I have been going to Koon Thai since it opened. We were always treated with wonderful food at very great prices with excellent service. We even became very good friends with the owner who would often greet us with hugs. We have been a bit absent for a bit due to unfortunate events but were eager to return on Tuesday, the 15th. For some reason, I was told that there wouldn't be any servers that day, despite the fact that they were clearly open for business. I responded with the notion that we were NOT welcome there, despite our longtime support. Rather than even attempt to correct any misleadings, Kanni simply removed herself from my friends list. Too greasy for my taste. Got the lunch special which came with ok soup. Chose a vegetable dumpling which came deep fried and was not at all what I was expecting. The Venue: A nice, small, little spot that's clean and tidy The Service: The service here is.... Lacking. Upon entering the establishment I was immediately told to not order anything unless it was a curry as it "would take 30 minutes" to prepare. So I ordered a curry.... Which took over 30 minutes anyway hah. I had read that the owner (or chef, or whatever) is a bit of a dickbutt and he kind of is. I watched him berate a customer because the customer was standing by the door. The guy runs up and shouts "Get away from that door, it's making the bell ring what's wrong with you guy?!?" The Food: As I read in other reviews, it's awesome :D I ordered the red curry but was actually given yellow curry (after waiting for half an hour I didn't care anymore anyway) and it was really, really good! The Cost: The cost was reasonable. The Bottom Line: If you don't mind the occasionally rude guy, like great Thai, and have all the time in the world you're really going to like this place! What a difference a season makes. Our visit this final week in December made us rethink our previous hearty recommendation for this establishment. Our fourth visit was very bad in many ways, even if the food was good. First, when the server needs to wear a winter hat during lunch, you would think they could turn up the heat. We said something about the temperature of the water for the tea being too cold, and not only was it too cold to brew a proper cup of tea, he gave us an attitude about it. Middle of the day on a mid-weekday, not too many tables, and our lunch for 5 took more than an 1.5 hours for service. Server was cold-mannered and almost confrontational when we mentioned something wasn't brought yet, reply was with an "I KNOW". Thai iced tea was never delivered, but he still tried to get money by offering it to-go . . . a little late! The attitude was insanely bad, and made us feel like we were at fault for daring to come in for lunch. This was the same guy who had served us on past visits in a competent manner, so no idea what was happening. Four soups all delivered separately, with a 10 minute lag between each. Entrees came out in a semi-simultaneous manner, amazing! By this time all of the other 2 tables had left, so no excuse!! Saw a female employee exit the bathroom still wearing blue gloves tucking in her hair under a hat, before returning to the currently closed-in kitchen area. No idea if gloves were taken off or changed before anything else was touched/prepped. read more

This is a really good Thai restaurant in the area I stayed at for a training this week. I went in and was immediately greeted and given a seat of my choice. The service was fast, the food came out exactly as I wanted, and more importantly, it was better than I was initially expecting. I love the Tom Yum soup with the mushrooms and I loved my main course that came with it. The spice was perfect especially on a cold New England day. Absolutely blew my mind. In downtown New Haven who would have guess that this gem of a restaurant existed. We both had the lunch special which came with their soup of the day (most amazing Tom Yum soup I've ever had - I would have liked to bring a gallon of it home with me), an appetizer and main entree. For the appetizer I chose the spring roll which was surprising very good. Crispy spring rolls can often times be too oily or lack flavor but this one was perfectly crisp and flavorful. For my entree I ordered the red curry. Soooo good. It came in a bowl which I always appreciate because no one likes to lose any of that good sauce to the flatness of a plate and the portion was quite large. Everything was filling and satisfying, yet not at all heavy. I wish I lived closer so that I could frequent this place. Oh and not to forget, the service was superb. This is the worst Thai food that I have ever had. I ordered the beef with the broccoli garlic sauce I believe level five heat. The only heat this thing had was crushed red pepper. What a joke we ordered from Uber eats the food came completely soaking wet leaked through the package. Driver claimed that it leaked all over Him. Contacted the restaurant to express our concerns and they were no help. Food was an edible. I do not recommend this place at all if you can give the option of zero stars I would give them zero. Came here for lunch specials and was pretty much empty on a weekday afternoon. The combo comes with a soup, choice of appetizer, and choice of entree for only $9. You can also add on a beverage for $1. Tom yum soup (I think): Nice full flavors and I was pleasantly surprised to find chicken pieces in the broth. Corn cake: Very tiny portion (two coin-sized pieces) of chewy meat-flavored corn. Didn't like or dislike them. Moon dumpling: I have had a dish called "moon dumplings" before but they were vegetarian dumplings steamed and wrapped in gelatinous, transparent rice flour wrappers. These, on the other hand, were deep fried wontons. Tasty nonetheless confusing. Yellow curry: Got this with beef and "fire" (4/5) spicy level. It was indeed very spicy, while the coconut flavor in the curry balanced out the spice with every bite! The meat was tender, I was expecting more carrot and potato but only got one or two pieces. Pad cashew nut: Got this with chicken and also "fire" spicy level. This seemed like a healthier option as it consisted of lean meat and lots of vegetables, while rice was served on the side which makes for easy portion control. It reminded me of the Chinese dish cashew chicken. Unlike the curry, the spiciness here didn't seem to integrate well with the dish, and I wondered if the spice level was adjusted solely through adding more red chili flakes on top at the end of cooking. Thai iced tea: Delicious! A little on the sweet side but it was very refreshing. Overall a great deal for the amount of food! Everything was tasty but nothing special. read more

I was so underwhelmed by this restaurant. I arrived around dinner and was not greeted. Besides the two other tables, there was no restaurant staff to be found. I patiently waited... more than five minutes later, I grab a menu and sit myself down. The server finally shows up, but still no greeting. The food was equally disappointing. The flavor of my red curry was good, but it mostly consisted of curry gravy and an over abundance of bamboo shoots as filler. The brown rice was dry. I checked-in on Yelp for a complimentary thai tea, but the boba as hard... indicative of being old. This is a convenient spot to get Thai food. It's slightly on the American style (everything is on the sweet side), but I still like it. Basically, you have to really not know what you are doing to make flat rice noodles taste bad. Their Thai iced tea was too sweet, and I suspect it is made from a pre-mix. They have a stamp card, but you have to buy many meals before you get your freebie, more annoyingly, they gave me and my date two stamp cards each with one stamp, rather than stamping it twice for two meals. read more

We found this place on Yelp and chose it for proximity to the hotel we were at. The food was incredible. We started with corn cake and moon dumplings (as we had never seen them on a Thai menu at home). Both were really delicious. Next was ginger fried rice and chicken with a spicy basil sauce which was really good as well. They also have Bubble tea which came as a frosty beverage like a slushy with bubbles. A nice twist.
