I and my friend visited this restaurant during the weekday evening. The owner of the restaurant took orders and served the menu by herself. We were very satisfied by her very kind and warm attitude and service. You may feel that the inside of restaurant is not very fancy. However, I can say that the taste of food can stand comparison with the other Thai restaurants in Downtown New Haven. If you like sweet soy sauce flavored Thai cuisine, try "Thai Pepper Garlic." Very good and really relaxing place to eat. Went for lunch and had the special. What I received was some of the BEST soup I have ever eaten!! I had chicken Pad Thai, the soup with 2 dumplings and of course even though it was freezing out, Thai Iced Tea. That Tom Yum soup is out of this world!!! I would have given 5 stars except too much ice in tea, so very little of the tea itself. The Pad Thai was a little too sweet for me, but that may just be my taste. Ordered Koon Thai on Eat24 on Monday and I was not disappointed! I've tried a few Thai places in the area but had yet to find somewhere that was really good. When I picked up my food the business was pretty empty and I had a tough time finding it. The owner was very sweet and asked how I'd heard about her business. I had the Pad Thai. Both my girlfriend and I ordered mild and although it was hotter than expected, it was still delicious! Really good lunch special! Only $8.95 for a small appetizer, soup of the day, and choice of entree. You can also add Thai ice tea or Thai ice coffee to your lunch for just $1, and they come in cute mason jars! For appetizer, I've tried the spring roll and the crab rangoon. The spring roll was typical, but the crab rangoon was interesting! Had like a cream cheese interior to the fried outside. Both times the soup of the day was tom yum soup, a mild spice but not bad. This is a review for the service only, not the food (which might have been, admittedly, delicious- can't know, inedible). I ordered their Pad Thai and a handful of other items from UberEats. On the UberEats website, there's a spice level that ranges from mild to super spicy, then there is a last option that says "Thai", without any mention of spice, ie it doesn't say "Thai Spicy". Thinking it was just the sauce, I picked that, so when the meal arrived it must have been delicious but was inedible due to how hot it was. I called the restaurant to explain, since even here in Yelp they say call us with any problems. NOT to ask for a refund, NOT to ask for another meal- just to tell them it looks confusing because it's not "Thai spicy", or "Thai- extra spicy". Call us with any problems? Yeah right! The female who answered and checked my order... raised her voice and then hung up on me. I tried to call back a few times and they refused to pick up! Extremely unprofessional, I'm thoroughly disappointed. With the number of good options in New Haven, I'm never getting food from here again. They need more workers. The service is too slow. It seems there is just one person who also prepares the food?? If you are ordering take out, don't expect a formal greeting. I ordered take-out from Yelp! based on the good reviews. After I ordered, the restaurant indicated 35 minutes for pick-up. I checked after 15 minutes, and it has revised the time to 75 minutes for pick-up. I checked after an hour, and it said the same, so I went there to pick up, and was told that they haven't started cooking, and that it would be another 15-30 minutes wait. No apologies. I asked the order to be cancelled and for a receipt, and they said that they cannot provide any confirmation or receipt. I left without any food. I saw one cook in the kitchen, and one server for the entire restaurant. The food may be good (I couldn't say), but good luck on getting your order! read more

I'm not a Thai food connoisseur, but I'm not a total noob either. I ordered the khao soi chicken. If you haven't tried khao soi, it's a curry soup with noodles, super flavorful, sweet/spicy/salty/curry. The flavors have to be balanced right or it's disappointing. They got it just right. I have been to every Thai restaurant around Yale, and by far, this has been my worst experience in terms of both service and food. Service - extremely slow and rude: First, our waiter could not explain the menus to us; when asked what moon dumpling is, for instance, he told us that he honestly didn't know. And trust me, he didn't even seem embarrassed or apologetic about it, which actually made the experience all the more unpleasant. Second, although we ordered first, pick up orders that were placed most definitely after us were served before us. Because of this, although we were the only people dining in, we still waited over 30, 40 minutes for our stirred fried noodles. Food - overly sweet: Our soup, crab rangoon, and noodle soup were okay. But Pad See Ew was overly sweet. Among many pad see ews that I have tried, this was the worst, because the taste of sugar overwhelmed everything. I stumbled upon this place on a trip to New Haven when looking to appease my hankering for some Thai food. I would mention that I am a great fan of Thai food, I eat out very often, and while I appreciate the simplest establishments to the most refined, wherever I am I am a somewhat demanding customer when it comes to quality of the cooking. This place was an excellent discovery. The food was delicious, obviously well prepared with fresh ingredients, deftly spiced and served hot and fragrant. I rarely write reviews but was inspired by this restaurant to do so. This is probably the best thai food on my first visit in Downtown New Heaven. I found this place when hunting for good thai food. Everything we ordered was absolutely delicious and the price is fair. Great food but the worse service. The guy infront who takes your order and he's also the waiter have the worse customer service. I've eaten here pre covid and have ordered take outs several time and this guy is consistently rude. I don't know why the place can't hire anyone else who is better with customers and without an attitude. They would attract more customers if they have better customer service. The last thing that turned me off was this same guy who mock laughed at me when I tried to order over the phone and was just plain rude. Fabulous... I think I have become a connoisseur of american-thai restaurants nationwide, being as I love thai and travel often for business and am vegetarian, which most thai restaurants can accommodate. Koon definitely stands out. The ingredients are just more fresh, more real than any thai place I've been in recent memory. Typically even when vegetables are not frozen, let's say carrots - you can often just tell they've been in a cold room for weeks, probably. Not at Koon Thai. Real, fresh vegetables, real FRESH BASIL in both the fresh summer rolls (probably my favorite thing to eat, anywhere, any time) and in the spicy eggplant dish I ordered (with tofu) ... which also featured beautiful, flavorful, fresh (cooked) japanese eggplant. I actually felt transported back to the steep hills of and vibrant tastes of thailand, where my love of thai food began in earnest many many years ago. Top that off with what has to be the best service-with-genuine-warmth in a ten-state radius. The proprietor is clearly incredibly hardworking, totally invested in her customers' happiness, their satisfaction with their meal, and their experience at her restaurant. Koon Thai has amazing Thai food!! I am vegan, and there is plenty of vegan options, gluten free as well. My favorite dish is the spicy korean noodle with rice noodles, tofu, and no egg. It is truly an incredible dish. The fresh spring rolls are also amazing, and fresh! The owner Kanni, is a delight and very kind. As a vegan, there really is no restaurant I get really excited about going to, UNTIL KOON THAI!! I can't say enough good things about this restaurant. One week I went there three times, I have never gone to a restaurant that much in my life. I look forward to it every time. Other Thai restaurants simply do not compare. I'm from Elmhurst NY. Anyone Asian knows Queens is the Asian capital of the US. I now reside in Westchester County NY. I have family that attend Yale so today I decided to visit and I was in the mood for Thai food. I found a nice place called Koon Thai from here, Yelp. Wow. Thank you. My dish tasted like I was back in Elmhurst. I ordered Pad Kee Mao. The flavor and taste was exceptional. For soup I ordered Tom Yum. Nice and spicy. Awesome. Just like my wife prepares it. My Papaya salad was delightful. I think my wife got a little angry I don't normally eat this much but I was hungry and everything tasted perfect. I could not eat a dessert. This restaurant is one of the best Thai restaurants in New Heaven, CT!! I have had Thai foods from many Thai restaurants. This place brought me back to when I visited Thailand 2 years ago. We went during the lunch special. You get an appetizer, soup of the day and an entree. It was all amazing. The Owner served us water and was so kind. She answered our questions about the dishes with no problem. Our waiter/server was also very nice . He had a tablet in his hand that could show us pictures to help us make a choice. We had Corn Cake, spring roll, Pad Kee Mao(drunken noodles and Beef ball noodle soup. I tried the great tasting mango coconut Boba tea. Which I found out has little Tapioca balls in it.
