Landed in Austin at 11:00 am, and at Koriente by 1:45 pm. I have to say my first meal in Austin was amazing! My research on Koriente did not disappoint. Very nice atmosphere, simple but cozy and very friendly staff. But let's get down to the food. Loved it -- very fresh ingredients and a real clear attention to detail. I asked whether I should get tofu or chicken, and the cashier said she was in a tofu kind of mood. The tofu was amongst the best I've had outside of home, too often tofu has no flavor, is deep fried, or is too soft or too hard, but this tofu was perfect, pan fried with a light crust and flavorful. And, apparently because I came during lunch service, there is all you can eat soup, salad, and pickled veggies. The pickled veggies were clearly home made and so good! In short, I hope I have time to make a return trip, but if I can't, I'll go back to DC happy! Koriente was a great way for me to start my Austin culinary adventures. read more

The staff has never charged me for a miso soup. You are the only one that told me that and it's because you thought I was this other person. Anyways like I said I've never had this probably anywhere else. I have no problem paying for what I order. You have to repeat my order more than 4 times. I was pumped to try Koriente after bookmarking this spot for its "legit" Asian food and healthy style of cooking. For me, it fell short...but I do want to say that the mix-mix item looked and tasted the best (the entire table agreed). Our group came for dinner on a Thursday after an event in the city and we were hungry, sweaty and ready to eat. I tried their Obake bowl since it was a vegetarian bowl, and the sweet lady at the cashier said we get free miso soup with our meal. That was awesome. We could only find a spot outside on the back patio, so I didn't feel like drinking super hot miso with the heat. They should have some sort of fans outside not only for the heat, but for the evil mosquitoes. Wear that OFF spray! Back to the food, the Obake bowl was just alright. My veggie bowl came with broccoli, mushrooms and some tofu that wasn't seasoned well. It wasn't full of flavor. Some more marination time might've helped. I do love that you're able to choose the base of your bowl, whether it's white rice, brown rice, noodles, or a mix. However, in all...I felt that I could've been eating my meal prep haha. My friend and I shared the salmon rice roll wrap, which was better (in my opinion) than the bowl in terms of the flavors and the worth. Service was very kind and sweet, and it seems like their boba has some fans too. I'm picky with my boba, so I wasn't brave enough to try it. I was a bit hesitant honestly even with all of the positive reviews on Yelp, but I figured I would give it a go. Upon arrival it almost has the vibes of a hole in the wall setup, dark, diner type seating, outdated. This should not take away from the epic-ness you will experience. When I arrived, the front hostess was quite cheery and provided a seat right away. She also explained that they offer unlimited free miso, which was a solid 4 out of 5! The menu is pretty easy to navigate and offers many tasty treats of full meals. It focuses on Asian fusion, whether Japanese, Korean, or some South East Asia meals. I had plans to grab an appetizer or two until I had two bowls of miso, oops! I went ahead and grabbed a bowl of Honey Glazed Mahi with an avocado and fried egg on top. Meal came out pretty quick and it looked great! You are guaranteed to not walk away hungry after ordering many of their bowls as they are packed with healthy ingredients that are quite filling. Price point was extremely approachable, coming in under $10, which is great. My picture was taken half way through, so it doesn't look very good (sorry), but it tasted VERY GOOD! I came from Houston and was looking for Asian food in the area during the week of July 4th. I only came here because of the amazing reviews. The first thing I noticed upon arrival is the many signs plastered against the doors. They are doing TO-GO ONLY and require a mask.. there are so many different signs plastered at the entrance to make sure you understand this. I wish I knew that before I paid $6 parking at the lot next to the place, but that's on me. Other signs include payment methods they accepted, prob something about food delivery services, etc. The person at the register only gave us 1 menu for the three of us to share and directed us to a table that had a sign saying something along the lines of "IF YOU TAKE OFF YOUR MASK AT THE TABLE WE WILL ASK YOU TO LEAVE". With all the signs plastered every where, it just felt so uninviting. It didn't help that the inside looked sketchy.. which I typically don't mind but in addition with the unwelcoming signs it was very weird for an outsider. I had to go up to the register and ask for another menu which is whatever. After we made our order, the person asked where we parked. I pointed to the parking lot next to the shop then asked if we could go sit in our car until the food came out in about 15 minutes. We were told no and were redirected back to the table with the sign.. why'd you ask where I parked then?? Food came out pretty quick, within like 10 minutes. **Service/experience: 1/5** As for the food, it is not authentic Asian cuisine at all.. just okay. With food names like bibimbap, japchae, teriyaki, etc. you'd think you're at least getting some kind of authentic flavors.. NOPE. Some of their vegetables were almost sour?, vinegary, and salty. The rice they use are not white rice.. some kind of weird flavored purple rice. The only things my friends and I liked were the meat. Portions were decent. **Food: 1 to 2 /5.. It was a bit hard to mix up in the little container also, so I was mostly left trying to do a sort of deconstructed sushi type of thing. Pros: The food is great, and there is something for everyone (vegans, nonvegans, spicy, nonspicy, healthy, etc). Cons: No longer available for sitting, I waiting in line for a while and the staff prioritized pickups rather than people waiting in line to order. The staff seemed grumpy, I don't blame them it seems like a lot of stress to caretake so many pickups and waiting customers. Parking is tough in the area, not a part of town one necessarily feels safe to roam around (that's an understatement). Overall: Would recommend you try it out, and just know the vibe isn't that great and would be better to take home and create the ambience at home. read more

Unpleasant experience. Customer service: they were very unfriendly, behaved as if they hated their jobs and gave poor customer service because of it. I asked for water and they didn't give it with my order after ordering me to stay outside to wait for my order. The girl then didn't hand me my food but left it hanging on the rail of some stairs. The owner needs to have a customer service training for their staff or treat their staff better because they hate it there. It was comical how horrible the customer service was. Food: the miso soup tasted watered down. Not much flavor. The teriyaki chicken bowl was the better part of the experience. It was decent and edible. Over all: if the owner can't fix the recipe for phenomenal food, at least train your staff in customer service. I think I'll need to go back and try something else on the menu as I didn't really care for my meal here. Seeing the rave reviews for healthy korean food I was very excited to eat here. I ordered the Thai papaya salad as I love a traditional papaya salad and thought this would be something similar. For your money, it does come with a lot of food. Mine came with spinach, rice, carrots, oyster mushrooms, and fresh shredded papaya. Everything came with a side of gochujang (spicy red pepper paste) to mix in with the bowl, similar to how one would eat a bibimbap. I didn't particularly enjoy the shredded papaya in its bare form and wish more had been done with it to better incorporate it. It would have tasted lovely slightly pickled or in some kind of dressing. However, the oyster mushrooms were the star of this dish and I really enjoyed how they were marinated and cooked. The dish overall tasted like a cold, fresh bibimbap, which I wasn't expecting. Most of the ingredients come raw and unseasoned, and I thought the gochujang wasn't enough to compensate for the lack of seasoning/sauces going on. My first dinner during a recent stay in Austin for SXSW was at Koriente. I was in search for something that was healthy and veggie-friendly. Luckily, I found this Korean spot on Rainey. (Thank again, Yelp app!) The line was long to place orders (it swung outside to the door). The reviews for this place were good, so I figured that the long line was a result of demand (versus slow/bad service). This was correct. The guy behind the counter was taking orders quickly; there were just a lot of people who wanted to order. There is only one line for making orders (either for take-out or dine-in). Most of the people on the line that line were take-out, so we lucked out and could get a table. The food was amazing! We ordered - - Edamame - Lemon Pepper Papaya Salad - green papaya salad with spring greens, carrots, red onion relish, chill paste, and toasted garlic (it looked like sesame seeds to me, but it's garlic) - Koriente Curry A - vegetarian curry with carrots, onions, potatoes, mushrooms over rice (made hot) - Japchei - Clear sweet potato noodles, carrots, green cabbage, red cabbage, red bell peppers, and spring greens with tofu and added shiitake mushrooms (made hot again) Also, you get free miso soup if you dine-in. Came here during SXSW and waited in a line out the door for ~20min. This place came highly recommended by someone I met at the conference. I ordered Japchae with add ons of wild mushroom, chicken and an egg. The guy taking my order was super nice and added garlic, made it spicy, and gave me the egg on top for free. I think he noticed I wanted a lot of add ons and gave me a break :) This place also has a variety of tea that they serve in a cute teapot. They also have miso soup, salad, water, and other condiments you can take on the left side of the cash register. I really loved the japchae bowl I ordered! What is most cool about this place is they specifically say that you can subsite anything on the menu for something else for no extra charge. You can sub noodles for rice. Add roasted garlic. Make extra spicy. Really cool. Also the staff can let you know how to modify your order to you liking. So the menu is Japanese food oriented and there was a real emphasis on veggies in every dish. They also had some other Asian dishes that were Thai and Korean so lots to choose from. They have lots of Asian inspired bowls to choose from, salads like papaya, curry dishes, rice dishes. Everything is Heather oriented on no deep frying going on! Since I had never been here I asked the guy at the counter what he recommended and he said their shitake tofu bowl was popular. I wanted to make sure it had some veggies and he assured me it had veggies and greens and was very healthy. I was going to get the Japchei because I never have had yam noodles before and it looked great but I went with his recommendation. So while you are waiting for your order, get this, they have a bar of free salad with dressing and fresh miso soup. I could not believe the offering and all complementary unlimited. Yes that's right. And on top of that they also had this wonderful spicy mix of pickled veggies like celery jalapenos turnips and other stuff that you could add to your dishes so delicious mixture of spiciness. I literally went nutty with the salad and soup it was awesome. My meal came out and it was as good as I was led to believe. This dish had so many flavors going on with the fiery sessami crusted tofu with crispy onions, grilled shitake and broccoli with avocado on top. Such a great rice bowl. Overall it was a perfect lunch and so reasonable. Man I must be getting ripped off in Cali:) Stuffed my face silly. Already thinking how to get back here to try more stuff out. Only slightly thing to point out is Austin has a lot of homeless people so if you are walking from downtown just be prepared. They didn't bother me but this place is a bit on the outskirts of town but once inside it's super pleasant and casual. What more can I say.
