I've had the bulgoki and smoke salmon hand rolls. Both were good, but I really like the hand rolls and they're very cheap! You also get miso soup and a salad with lunch. It's an exceptional deal for the price. There are some small personal touches throughout the restaurant that give it a nice feel, like the message on the wall out on the patio. There is no better restaurant to visit while downtown in Austin. Koriente is a gem unlike any other available to the masses. As a local who visits this spot frequently they know my name and even my order by the sound of my voice. In today's times where everything is digital and impersonal Koriente strives to brands that gap between business and patron. The food, don't get me started as there is an endless amount of ways to customize an order to fit a particular person. The ingredients are always top shelf and leave you feeling full but not disgusting like other restaurants. When was the last time you went out to eat and had a great meal but also felt amazing when you got home? Living in Austin and being around so much great barbecue, hamburgers, tacos etc. will make you feel great for the moment but ultimately leads to regret. Kind of like the Darkside of the force. There are a few things I should mention that make this place one of my top three restaurants in Austin. The first one is the one I just touched on. The food served here is clean, organic and not over salted or over seasoned. I've had a few different dishes like the mix mix with chicken avocado and also the sushi grade tuna with raw vegetables. On each occasion the vegetables are crispy, in season, delicious. The meat is always cooked just right and on occasion I tried the red sauce which is a bit spicy and enjoyable. The second thing that's great is the price. They could probably charge a little bit more than they do because the portions are generous and the quality is great. The fact that I can come here and eat like a king along with another person for under $30 is amazing to me. And also add in the fact that they provide free miso soup for each order and it ends up being a great deal. Last thing I want to talk about is the guy that works at the front. He is a very sociable, patient, and informative young Asian guy. Can't remember his name or else I would've put it in this review. And I mean this when I say that every restaurant management could learn a lesson from this guy. Today my girlfriend placed an order for a curry dish and he had the insight to ask if she had ever had a Japanese yellow curry before, and knowing that she may not enjoy it asked if she would like a sample. Of course she did enjoy it but the point is that people that run restaurants should think of their patrons as much as this guy does. If Whole Foods were to open up a progressive Korean restaurant, this would be it. A friend and I ordered the bimbimbap with bulgogi, and all of the julienne vegetables were fresh as if they had just been picked from the farm. I felt guilt free after the meal, and full too. The employee that brought us our food was so nice and courteous, and Jay sent us a complimentary green tea ice cream for dessert. I can't wait to go back and I will be bringing all of my out of town guests here to eat at least once. Both dishes had a great flavor profile, and I really enjoyed the rice medallions. The only downfall was the service. While friendly & efficient, the young staff shared their woes & perspective on love & loss a little too loudly. This was fixed easily by sitting outside on the cute patio & did impact my view of the food. :) The restaurant allows dogs outside. This is a Treasure in D. Town Austin. DownTown has some great standard eats, but lacks in more exotic/healthier Foods. I got a massive bowl here dressed really well with LOTS of veggies.. I'm not even from Austin, and this is my second time here. Thank goodness my job sent me to this city because I haven't stopped thinking about this place since the first time I had it. I came in during lunch, that's when they have their free soup and salad bar. Both the miso soup and salad with pickled veggies were amazing! I had the Japchei, which is clear sweat potato noodles with veggies and tofu. 4/5 Ate this guilt free! I love this place so much that I even ordered the MixMix Bibimbap to go. Great place for health food fanatics. You order at the counter, take a number and they bring the food to you. Most of the choices are very healthy, and you can do all sorts of substitutions to suit your taste. We ordered the mahi mahi, curry , and some hummus rolls appetizers. When we asked if we could smoke on the patio, the girl at the counter hesitantly said yes, as long as we were not next to nonsmokers. Fair enough. We practically had the small patio to ourselves, though we had to wait for the table close to the railing to be bussed before seating ourselves. The busser later let out some overemphasized coughs when we started smoking. Hrm. Wasn't too impressed with the hummus rolls. Sure, they were healthy, but without that peanut dipping sauce, they were unappetizing. Our entrees were loaded with veggies, especially since I had opted for more veggies and no rice. Everything was fresh, but I found the sauces to be, well, average at best. It felt nice to be eating healthier, and everything tasted fine, but it felt very much like a home cooked meal I could make myself, something I am not looking for when I eat out. If you call this real korean food, I will slap you. /slap But if you come with the expectation that its really americanized korean food, a la ultra high quality version (think like non-chain PF Changs?), then this place is actually really good. I got the jap chai, a clear noodle dish stir fried with spinach, carrots and then some not very traditional ingredients like bib lettuce. I added some bulgogi to that to make it feel a bit more korean, but it went the other way: not very korean tasting meat either (i.e. not enough soy, not enough sugar, no sesame oil and not enough marination time). But, all the food offered here from the miso soup, to the japchai to the bibimbap are very simple, clean, customizable palate cleansers. And its light, which is perfect for when you pop out of your office for lunch and need to not knock out for a couple more hours. read more

I have no idea why this place is thought of so highly. It may be because it's vegan friendly, as being vegan has become a very popular thing in Austin nowadays. I ordered the curry with chicken and was pretty disappointed. It didn't taste bad, but it tasted like something I could make using the instant microwavable curry (which I think tastes okay, but why would I go out and pay more for such a dish). They have free miso soup that's self-service but that was rather plain as well. The most annoying thing is that the main dish is very simple, and they charge extra for everything. You'll pay a decent amount for a dish, and then you'll get tempted by the cashier to add chicken, egg, avocado, and so on for an extra charge per topping. Maybe it was just my dish and all the other ones are great. Not so. I went with a rather large group and most of us ordered different dishes. We were all unpleasantly surprised by how "okay" everything tasted, given the high ratings of this place (most people said this place deserved at most a 3-star rating). If you've ever had Korean food before, it's literally just bibimbap. The noodles are japchae noodles and are not fantastic. The miso soup was not good and too oily and even blander than the entree itself. Bleh. You order at the counter and then they bring out the food to you. They also pick up your plates for you. I did appreciate the cashier giving me the fried egg for free because I came in a big group, and it was my first time. Environment: There is limited seating indoors, but there were more tables outside that I elected to sit at. Parking: Austin parking hassle. Street parking or there is a lot nearby, but it's $5 for 4 hours of parking. I ended up paying $9 for this meal. Hearing about the small space, we came early on a Saturday so we could be sure to get a table, which was a good idea! We arrive and ordered a pot of tea while we looked over the menu. They also brought out the complimentary miso soup (so nice!) while we tried to wrap our head around this menu. There are so many variations and add ons and a Favorite Combinations corner that we were a little overwhelmed, but with the help of Yelp and Foodspotting, we were able to get an idea of what went with what. The fish was very flavorful and a really good market price. They seem much more dedicated to serving a healthy foundation that anyone can season to their own taste. I've been a vegan before and I know I would have found Koriente to have been a flavor sensation. Now that I've gone back to the dark side, I have to pump things up to impress my taste buds as much as french fries and mayonnaise do! ;p Koriente doesn't aim to compete with french fries thank God! You order at the counter and pick your own table. Tables can be precious so you might want to claim one with your stuff before you get in line to order. There are patio tables in the back which can be the easiest place to find a seat. The patio is peaceful and fine when the weather is mild but the view is only of a parking lot and an alley. I lean toward the inside and AC. Since Koriente is on 7th across from the police station, you're dealing with 6th Street parking dynamics. I never go to Koriente when it's party time on 6th unless I get an Uber. (Ride Austin, actually. Go, locals!) Koriente does have a handful of TV parking spaces behind them, accessible from the one-way alley. Unfortunately, the alley is only accessible from 6th so, to go for the kill. Flavorful, decent priced, and great lunch specials (free miso soup and salad). I would NOT recommend the milk tea though... Just tasted like water with black tea. I know they mention before hand the milk tea isn't as sweet as most places, but this wasn't even as good as mixing earl grey with milk and a bit of honey for taste. I DO recommend the Spicy Chicken Bowl, the chicken isn't dry and there's a decent portion to have almost 2 lunches, add avocado and eggs! I also recommend Obake (B) with added beef, egg and avocado.
