Baked rice with oxtail and cheese: was looking forward to this the most but found it just average. Oxtail super tender, but flavorless. Also gave super tiny pieces. Cheese (THE MOST IMPORTANT PART) was sparse and the whole plate looked like a cheese potato explosion had happened in the kitchen and no cleanup crew was present! Bland overall Beef stew with bean curd: my favorite of the night, but they skimped on the bean curd. There were maybe four pieces in total? Beef stew quite good too, but could've been more tender. Sauce was decent! Sweet and sour pork: be careful with these bites because you might be biting/eating a huge piece of fried fat coated in a more sweet than sour sauce. Definitely grossed me out by how little meat there was. I wasn't ordering a plate of blubber? String beans with pork: these string beans were fried first so they're wrinkly as hell but I swear, these are old string beans. I did like the pickled veggies that got stir fried into this Sizzling salmon with black pepper sauce: came with fries and some broccoli. They drenched the sauce over the salmon that the protein was barely recognizable. This restaurant is one of my family's favorites. My sister loves their Portuguese veggies spaghetti dish. We always order it when she is in town. The chef always load up on the vegetables. My mother and uncle love the noodles with peanut sauce. It's very addictive. For some reasons, their sauce is well seasoned compare to ones in Chinatown, Manhattan. Hong Kong cafes are known as cha chaan teng in Cantonese, which is the oriental equivalent of greasy spoon or diner. There is one that I used to go to in the past in Flushing known as La Coral, which was cheaper than its competitors which also does oriental bakery. When I entered, the drinks are made in the front while the kitchen is at the back. Since the restaurant usually serves breakfast and lunch items, the restaurant looks about to close for the day. There were two parties with one about to leave. The background music was Cantopop. I saw the walls hanging with scenes of Hong Kong. Being originally from Hong Kong, I grew up in this kind of establishment (cha chahn tang) and know how it should be like. I ordered the instant noodles with luncheon meat and fried egg meal. The noodles were kind of soggy and the fried egg still had some uncooked white on the top (I didn't mind this too much), all in a very bland broth. The broth was so bland that I didn't really want to finish the meal. The milk tea that came with the meal was pretty good and was probably the best part. I also got to try their rice rolls with the peanut sauce which were decent, but still could've used more flavor. The service was on point with your typical servers running around the place efficiently. The interior is relatively modern (good), but a bit too dimly lit (bad). If I was looking for a quick, cheap meal, I might consider this place. Maybe I'll try something else next time, but my one experience here definitely wasn't the best. So my boyfriend wanted to try this place so I gave it another try. Good thing I did. Came back a couple time afterwards. I tried their special fried rice and their noodle soup and took a liking to both of them. The flavors were perfect although I'd say the portion for the noodle soup was a bit small. The first time I came here for breakfast and it wasn't too bad for me but my friend got a bad food poison immediately she ate, she threw up fever and all that. Monday. 8:30pm. Half empty. Went here at a friend's recommendation. Haven't gone since their renovation. The last time I went had to be at least 5 years ago. I got the baked bolognese ziti. It's not bad, too sweet. These Chinese places never have legit tomato taste but this place has relatively good bolognese. There's a lot of herbs in the sauce but you can't taste most of it. The smaller one tasted sour (?). It came with a lot of "pickled cabbage" which was surprisingly good. Pepper chicken stir fry spaghetti had fresh peppercorn taste and had wok hei. Unfortunately the chicken was overcooked and dry. Baked pork chop spaghetti. Bad. Tomato sauce was too red, doesn't even look like ketchup. It had a waxy texture and no taste. I actually finished this dish by washing the sauce away with water. The porkchop was too dry and hard. The tables along the walls all have a lamp above them. I don't like how it changes color. I don't like having blue or red or purple light over my food you know?! Also the light sign at the back of the restaurant was way too bright. I'm glad I didn't face it. The utensils are weird too. We ordered the onion rings, HK style milk tea, beef ho fun(stir fry) and peanut butter condensed milk toast. I remember coming here when it first opened and thought it was horrible! The food was loaded with MSG and made me so thirsty when I left. After several years of avoiding Kowloon Cafe, I decided to get take-out for lunch from here today and give it a second chance. I was not disappointed! Baked pork chops over rice- Decent but the one at M Star Cafe in Chinatown is still the best. The sauce isn't as flavorful and the rice is a little stale but not terrible. I also didn't really like the cut up pieces of tomato in the sauce since they tasted so out of place. HK-style rice noodles- Again, not as good as M Star Cafe. The noodles were a little more chewy instead of mushy (which some might prefer). There also wasn't enough sauce in my opinion. The taste of the sauce was a little off (wrong ratio of soy sauce to peanut sauce) but again, not horrible. Overall, Kowloon Cafe is a pretty decent restaurant in Bensonhurst to go to for HK-style food. I definitely prefer it over HK Tea and Sushi. Obviously I'm not going to head to Chinatown's M Star Cafe whenever I'm craving HK-style food so Kowloon Cafe will have to do! read more

I am happy to have discovered this via Yelp and a friend whose mother is a part owner of this place. Food: the twist on the satay beef instant noodles breakfast is that it's got a spicy kick to it. A subtle kick, but a kick nonetheless. The French toast had strawberries on it. Cute. Service: very responsive and quick. This is the way fast food should be. Wow, I do not understand the previous bad reviews. The food here is quite good. We ordered the cheese and crabmeat triangles and the pig intestines for appetizers. The intestines were not like what I've typically seen - they actually remove a lot of the fat! The spicy sauce with it is ok - it's like a spicier version of duck sauce - from a jar, not fresh. The duck gizzards are ok, as was my pork and vegetable macaroni soup. The best dish was the beef stew over broad rice noodle. Very nice and just the right amount of beef to tendon. They understand English and gives me my order the exact way I want it. I may feel uncomfortable dining here when its busy but its another spot for me to just eat and go. Quite frankly, I find it to be a little more expensive than other similar restaurants on that 86th street "strip". Kowloon Cafe was renovated about four months ago and the layout is still the same, but their decor has got an update. The new Kowloon features a color scheme of black and orange with pictures of Hong Kong and booths that line their walls. I've bought take-out here quite a few times after it renovated and had dinner here once. It can sure be quite busy on weekends - day and night. The service my friends and I received was pretty good. There was a nice gentleman that took the time to explain their special menu items that a friend and I couldn't read because it was in Chinese. He also provided us with extra napkins and was very friendly to us. Their are certain dishes here that are mediocre so I wouldn't recommend ordering it like the mixed balls with curry (their curry sauce is bland) and baked minced beef with green peas. I highly recommend their red bean smoothie, Baked Portuguese Chicken (it's my favorite), sauteed Chinese broccoli, fried calamari and Diced chicken and salted fish fried rice. Overall, a good alternative to consider if you're not in a mood to walk down 86th street & 20th avenue for HK Tea & Sushi. Now that Fay Wong Bakery is closed, I guess this will do for some Hong Kong style cafe food. I haven't been here for a year now and they actually renovated. Looks more modern and more clean. New seatings, which is more comfortable. If you want something close to Hong Kong food and want something affordable, should definitely come by. They can get pretty packed during peak lunch and dinner hours, so expect a small wait. Service is relatively fast! I tried many things on the menu, and the food is decent for the price. You get so much to choose from, so you always have some new things to try or you can stick with what you enjoy. I noticed that they added some new things to their menu as well. Definitely will come by again and again if I am in the area. I live all the way in 8th avenue and there's no Hong Kong style food around me anymore, so this is close as it gets for me. read more
