There was a family of four next our table (2 adults and 2 children), they also ordered a baked Portuguese dish and was sharing. Came with my best friends family on a weekday night. First off I've been a returning customer since I was a child. Here's how I would rate their baked Portuguese spaghetti with chicken. Portuguese spaghetti with chicken- 3/5- I do love the cheese pull in this however, the flavor was lacking. Chicken was baked perfectly and the spaghetti was good. I came here for lunch on a Sunday with my family. I haven't been here in years but I'm glad it's still around. I ordered the sushi lunch special (5 nigiri and 1 California roll) which came with both miso soup and salad. It was such a good deal for $10.50 so I was skeptical about the quality and portion. However, I was pleasantly surprised that it was a lot of food and the fish was still decent quality. My family also ordered the miso eggplant appetizer, the beef noodle soup, and the salmon teriyaki. As a Brooklyn classic, I'm not sure why this place has such low reviews when tons of people still come here everyday and is super packed on a weekend but still able to get a table in 5 minutes for 6 people. It was easy to grab this large table and everyone was able to have a lot of space amongst each other so it wasn't crowded but super bustling at the same time. We ordered a huge feast as the portions come huge and even ordered a boat to share amongst everyone which can be customized! To include rolls you like. My fave is the beef egg chow rice and the Portuguese fried rice! The pork chop dish will have you at a chokehold as it contains over 4 pieces of large fried pork chop. This is definitely a bang for your buck. I never ate so much for only $30 something dollars at least recently so I love revisiting back this neighborhood. Our beers did come kind of late and two of the five ended up being lukewarm as I guess they didn't think it mattered and probably not enough fridge space. Pretty obscene experience yesterday. Their credit card machine was down and we saw some people having issues when we sat down but wasn't sure. We were only told when it was time to pay. Mind you, they automatically added a credit card surcharge to the bill before it even gets to you. I've been here before but last evening (5:30pm-6:30pm) was a $h1tshow. They decided to give my toddlers glass cups and one son spilled some water. We started wiping up on our own and I asked if we could have a plastic cup, but one of the waitresses said to use our own water bottles instead. Seriously? My waitress had no idea what was going on and looked defeated even when she came to my table. But that wasn't the problem; she had no idea what was available or not. Came back multiple times with updates that items weren't available...at 5:30pm. The fried pig intestines came out cold and not very crispy. The stir fried instant noodles were very salty. More so than what you would guess for instant noodles. The highlight was the fried sole; which was crunchy and not dry. The sushi boat was ridiculously bad. You can tell I come here so often based on my number of check ins. It's my family's go to for simple quick bites. We also like how they open late (until 10?) especially when many restaurants nearby close around 8:30. The waiters never force you to leave faster. Perhaps it helps I always go late and there aren't people waiting for a table. My go to order is satay beef with macaroni in soup. Sometimes I get the baked spaghetti with seafood in cream sauce. They give a lot of seafood (frozen stuff ofc) and the cream sauce isn't too oily or thick. I actually like reheating it on a pan at home, soaking up all the oil while caramelizing the cheese and cream sauce. I had a new recent discovery. Their rice noodles are really big but the broth sucks. I still appreciate their size. When I tried it for the first time I got it with chicken wings. I finally understand why so many people order their chicken wings. It's objectively good. I don't necessarily like the flavoring of their chicken wings but everything else about it is excellent: temperature, juiciness, crunchy skin, clean meat (no bruised meat or bloody vessels), size not too big not too small. I am willing to have this again despite not liking the flavor. My mom likes ordering their sushi and rice plates. My dad likes their macaroni and rice plates. They say there's very good wok air for Cantonese dishes. We also like stir fry beef hor fun for the flavor and size but we can't discount the amount of oil used in it. It's not the chef's fault. It's just the nature of the dish, so we can't order it that often. My family also likes their milk tea. The uncle Henry makes it much better than everyone else. This place is far from perfect but at least flavors are much stronger than everywhere else. Their tea is often too weak and watery but at least it's hot enough and they're diligent about refills. FYI air conditioning gets cold in the summer especially the few tables near the front of the restaurant. I remember eating at HK Tea and Sushi since I was in elementary school, which was over 15 years ago! The food here is not out of this world, but it's decent comfort food for a low price. I'm surprised their rice dishes are still below $10 each in this economy. I've been here a few times recently and there was once where I found a small fruit fly in the middle of eating my Minced Beef Spaghetti. But given that I couldn't tell if it fell in while eating or was cooked in my pasta, I didn't tell anyone about it. Recently, I've been loving their bitter melon dishes. My favorite is the bitter melon beef. The sauce is a black bean sauce but it's also a bit sweet, which enhances the flavor profile and makes it soooo delicious! The bitter melon is cooked al dente, not too raw and not too soft. I even recommended the bitter melon to a friend who enjoys them as well and he loved it too! I would, however, avoid their fish dishes because they are a sodium bomb for some reason. I've had their eggplant fish and bitter melon fish, and both times I've had to gulp down a lot of water afterward. Maybe they're soaking the fish in salt water to preserve it's freshness? I'm upset my ex-roommate convinced me HK Tea and Sushi was not worth going to for all of these years. From what I can piece together from locals here and there, HK Tea & Sushi was the it spot back in the day and has now faded into a neighborhood staple. A quick look at the decor and it stands as a time capsule of when sushi was just getting popular in NYC (circa early 2000s?). I had some basic rolls and much like the service, there's room for improvement. My friend ordered some of the more special rolls and there was a lot more care and love devoted to their creation. I asked my friends who've lived in the area for over a decade and they recommend getting anything related to a Hong Kong cafe. I ordered the Portuguese spaghetti with pork chops and my dish came drowning in sauce. It was more majestic than witnessing my son being born. And they weren't skimpy on the pork chops. My friend got the minced beef and that was also glorious. And the kicker is having to pay so little on the bill. I got the Portuguese pork chop spaghetti with a milk tea, and after 20% tip, I paid less than $20. I can't remember the last time I paid remotely this low at a restaurant! I've been coming here since I was a kid and it's wonderful that their flavors have always been consistent. It is hands down one of my favorite Hong Kong cafe style foods in the city. For the last 2 decades, my family, friends, and I have been coming here for lunch and dinner, and often order takeout from here. A classic staple of Hong Kong cafe foods are their special cheese baked dishes (over rice or spaghetti). My favorite thing about this place's cheese baked dishes are their large generous portions and affordable cost. I have paid more for less at other places and no place does it like this one does in my opinion. I usually have more than enough to bring home as leftovers. Fun fact, when I was younger, I'd always order the pork chop cheese baked spaghetti and I would always count exactly 3 pieces of peas and diced carrots! This was the go-to spot back in the early 2000s as it had everything ranging from Japanese, Cantonese, and signature Hong Kong style dishes. It's not as salivating as it used to be. Everyone mainly comes here for the signature cheese baked Hong Kong style dishes. You go to a restaurant to try their signature dishes, at least that's my policy. The cheese baked oysters appetizers held their part in terms of buttery, charred and delectable flavors (can never go wrong with oysters). The baked pork chop on the other hand, I felt the dish solidified way too fast and it didn't retain the same addictive cheesy texture as the oysters did. Maybe because the protein was too big and it is hard sometimes to evenly distribute a nice cooking texture to all parts of the dish. Taste-wise I felt it was average. The same goes for the minced beef rice and minced beef spaghetti I shared with friends. Their menu has a boatload of options and if you're a regular here, it could take years for you to officially try everything they have to offer. Also very important, if you're a mild eater like myself, SHARE one order of any baked cheese casserole dishes as it is enough to feed two people and if you're looking to save some bucks.
