Came to Koze for the first time last week with my husband and his parents who were in town for the evening! My husband is a fan of hibachi style cuisine so we looked up a spot near our home and Koze was the first to pop up! They also had good reviews so we were all for it. When we first arrived the hostess asked if we wanted to be seated at the grill (for show) or the dining room. Since my husband does like watching the cook do his thing, we opted to wait the 15-20 minutes for a grill to become available. Next time we will definitely make note to call ahead and make a reservation though! Once we were seated we looked over the menu to see our options. I will say that the service at Koze was a bit lacking. Our waitress took quite a while to come around for our drink order, main course and then at the end of the evening for us to pay our bill. I'm not sure if she was serving a lot of other tables for the night but that was just our experience. It would have been nice if she came around more so we weren't looking for her. My husbands parents got the shrimp and scallop meal to split, my husband ordered the chicken and scallops. I, however, decided to try their sushi - so I got the California roll and the BBQ salmon roll. Once the chef came around to start cooking (which took quite a while) he started the show. I will also note that there was a bit of a language barrier between us and the chef. He tried asking us questions, such as if we were celebrating a birthday, but it was very hard for us to understand what he was saying. We could also tell he was a bit new at the job because certain "tricks" he'd mess up on or had to try a couple times before he got it right. For the food, I will say that I did enjoy my sushi. Both rolls were delicious! My husband ate mostly the protein on his plate. They give a huge portion of fried rice for the main courses, it's definitely enough for two people. I believe his parents said they thought the meal was good as well. I think it came down to the service we received which kind of left a bad impression. Came here on a Monday night and it was quite busy for a Monday. We were promptly seated, but overlooked for 30 minutes, before we ran out of patience and asked if someone could take our order. We had the spicy shrimp, the shumai and the gyoza. The shumai was perfectly steamed and the filling was so flavorful. I was not a fan of the other dishes. Went to Koze last night with a party of nine to celebrate my daughter and husband's pregnancy. We figured that Koze would be a great experience for the family because who doesn't love a good Teppanyaki? We were seated, the waitress came to take our drink order but when she brought drinks to our table she would hand the drinks on the ends of the table to put them where they needed to be. No problem. Now the soup and salad come out & the same thing. Handing us food on the end to pass to the middle. So when it was handed to me, I said you can walk around the table and place the dishes where they needed to be. We're already paying a gratuity for a large group but that doesn't mean that service declines because it's automatic gratuity. Then the piling up of dishes on the table. So I put those on the stools that were stored behind me. Chef comes out for the show. He was very nice and the food was great but the show was lackluster and a little sloppy. This is not to bash the restaurant but if I'm paying $$$, do your job. Make it an experience for the consumer. Benihana does a better job and if you're trying to achieve that level (not a high standard either), put a little more effort into it please. El Paso restaurants could learn about how to properly serve because it's not only like that in this particular restaurant. When you try to sell your restaurant to the public as a "higher-end" restaurant, you have to meet the mark. Probably won't be going to either Koze again. If we want Teppanyaki there's a Chinese buffet on the east side that has Teppanyaki. You'll pay less and expect less of a standard. I'm going to give you an objective review here so you know what to expect---not based on speculations or feelings, just real objective observation. 1. The chef was super-low energy and barely talked to us, maybe some smile here and there but by and large he looked like he didn't want to be there--this is of course of chef-dependent. He cooked our food and said "thank you" and left. Not what I used to expect in a hibachi restaurant. 2. 4 of us ordered New York steak, with one of my son ordering an extra for what should have been a total of 5 NY steak. The problem is you don't see 5 New York steak, we saw 3 small slices of New York steak--it was divided between the 4 of us when it was cooked. How is this right? We ordered 5 New York steak then we should see 5 New York steak that we paid for. My wife ordered a Filet Mignon and she got all Filet Mignon to herself which makes sense, and so we should have all got 1 whole new year steak per person, not 3 small pieces divided to all of us. I wonder if we all got filet mignon and if we would have gotten all filet mignon? 3. Price--extremely expensive for what you get. 4 or more parties gets mandatory 20% gratuity, not 6 like most restaurants. Host was bordering on RUDE. I worked in restaraunts for years so I know when someone is working efficiently and when they are not. He did not work efficiently. I had been there before and I knew I would order the fried rice since it had been good. The waitress was fine, much better than the male waiter I had last time. We all ordered the box lunch special and two of us wanted the fried rice. They give you a small carve out of rice, a little over a cup, I would say. They charge $5 to each person requesting fried rice. REALLY. An extra 10 bucks because two of us were going to have one cup of fried rice instead of white rice. First timers ... I decided to bring my grandparents here for Sunday dinner. It was the best decision I could have done because our experience was awesome. We had a chef named Ricky and he made our first time experience very entertaining. So many laughs and tricks up his sleeve that I am gonna see if I can ask for him again when I return. Not only was our Teppan chef great, but our server Julio was extremely attentive and very helpful. By far great customer service and the food is DELICIOUS. Unfortunately, I tried to order lobster and apparently there's a shortage in almost every restaurant ( from what our server Julio informed us about) soooo with that said, if that's what you're looking for make sure to call first before coming. Love going here! They are absolutely the best teppanyaki place I've been to! I'm from Cali and this seriously is the best! As soon as you walk in, you are greeted with smiles and they seat you, i recommend making a reservation prior because you'll get seated quicker but not to worry, they are usually on top of it. The staff is friendly and the food taste amazing! Also kid friendly which is a plus! We have two little ones! Love the atmosphere as well! Ambiance. The restaurant was clean and the general feel of the place was fine. Service. 2 categories. The teppan chef and wait/management staff. The teppan cheff was awsome. Funny, engaged and entertaining... This brings me to the food. It was super good... Only issue was my daughter requested her steak medium rare and it was overcooked... Chef immediately brought out another piece of filet mignon and cooked it correctly. I'm sure it was not his fault.. And here is my next and biggest issue. The wait tress and her manager. Since we arrived, the waitress rudely asked as we sat down if we knew what we wanted since they were in a touch and had other reservations to cater.... We ordered and because she was in a rushed/ I don't care mood, probably wrote down our steak wellness preference wrong. Not a big deal... But, when she came back with the drink order, as she ruched to serve them, she reached over the hot grill and spilled tea on us... She was too lazy to walk around the grill and burned herself whe serving improperly. Strike 2. Then, our salad, soup and appetizer came in after the teppan grill chef had already started cooking, no apologies, no Zou sauce saucer placed on out table. Strike 3. As we ate and drank our drinks and had appetizer, soup and salad bowls ready to be removed from the table, she never showed up to clean and offer refills. Has to chase down other waiters to take empty plates and ask for tea and water refills. Strike 4. Finally after a great experience with our teppan grill chef, we requested the 2 check that was separate between the couple we were with and us... To our surprise, the restaurant added a 20% tip and a blank space for us to add additional tips. I requested this service charged removed since we decide what the service was worth..not the restaurant. Manager came to my table and said since we knew each other (our couple friends) it was consodered a group of 4 not two groups of 2.... The manager decided to go pick up the reservation sheet and make it a point to bring it to the table including a menu to highlight the fine print stating a mandatory 20% gratuity on parties of 4 or more but advised he was not going to argue.... Super defensive. I advised that I would determine the gratuity the waitress deserved and if he kept making a scene, he would be the reason why the servers tip would decline to zero usd. He kept on arguing and after he ended up doing what I asked, we made sure to ZERO OUT the gratuity and go on our way. Lime I said above, the food, chef and ambiance were 5 stars bit the waitress having a guaranteed 20%tip don't give a shit about service.. And all they do is take the order and bring soup.. Totally not worth a 40usd tip. Hopefully customer realize they are getting double dipped and duped.... Stand up for your right to pay for services received and not because you are 4 or more in a party where she or he only bring drinks, a bowl of soup, take your order and never show up again to the table. Visited today at 6pm.. Eastside location. Will not name the staff members involved but they know exactly who they are. I will be reaching out to various government regulatory branches to see if their forced tipping practices are legal as well as finding ways to warn others who are being robbed by forced gratuity plus an additional blank line on the receipt with tip suggestion for patrons to tip again. I don't blame staff but more the owner. Most Japanese Restaurants I've ever worked at had their staff not just learn and know the menu but teach how it's said in Japanese. If you're going to culturally appropriate, then at least have the respect of teaching the meaning of temaki and maki. So speakin of rolls, had to be the smallest in diameter I've ever seen inside out rolls made. Even the layer of rice on the outside was thin. Wife was lookin forward to the ama ebi. When the heads came back, they stuffed it with who knows what therefore taking away from the natural flavor of the fried head. Green tea was initially watered down but the good staff fixed it. Miso soup lacked that basic umami flavor. Didn't have the tang that usually hits your throat from bonito and konbu. But hey, just add more hondashi and it'll be all right. We had asked the server for the dessert menu when we first sat down and ordered our food, and totally forgot to bring it so we asked again and she didn't give us the dessert menu until the store was literally about to close. Ahhh sookie sookie, now! After reading Jason J and Lurine F's reviews on Koze, I knew we had to get the crew together for dinner and this place did not disappoint. I live on the Westside and we do have a Koze in the neighborhood, but I had never been to it. Now I'm kicking myself in the butt for not checking out either one of these Koze's sooner. It's easy to see from the highway so you won't miss it at night and it's a pretty good size. There's maybe eight teppanyaki grills, a section with just tables, and a bar. Plenty of room and very accommodating to any size party. Since our party was shy of ten people, I called a reservation in ahead. I know they'd still have taken just as good care of had I not made a reservation, but they really went above and beyond. If you do want to be seated at the teppanyaki grill, I'd say call ahead no matter how many people are in your group because those tables filled up fast while we were there. A few of us waited at the bar until everyone else showed up, but the host allowed us to take a seat at the grill even though our party wasn't complete yet. Obviously that might not always be an option and probably not the policy, but I appreciate that they made the exception without me asking. Really, everyone we interacted with was just generally awesome. The table shared calamari tempura, gyoza, a salmon roll, a dragon roll, and a crunchy shrimp roll. The sushi was so yum! I'd go back just for sushi. The prices on the sushi were really good for the area and I didn't feel like any of them had unnecessary fillers. The appetizers were both under $10 each. Great prices again and I loved both of them. The gyoza made me realize that Koze is a little bit more than Japanese food, but more so a fusion of the locals taste and Japanese. The gyoza had melted cheese on top... I've never seen that before, but I fricken' loved it. The calamari tempura was delicious, big pieces of calamari with plenty of veggies. Everything was so dang good. The steak and shrimp were the go-to's of the night, but since I had never had swordfish before I decided to go for it. The chef came out and put on the food show that one can expect with a teppanyaki grill. There were lot's of laughs and some pieces of egg thrown around. As he cooked we had miso soup and a ginger salad. The ginger salad was good, nothing out of the ordinary. The miso soup was very different than what is typically served in EP. Big pieces of mushroom, green onions, and noodles (very similar to a very thin spaghetti). The broth was so tasty. Koze serves some of the best miso soup in the city. I really liked the fried rice which is crazy because I'm normally not a fan. The swordfish was so yummy. Of course teppanyaki grills are a tad pricey, but it was totally worth it. Not fishy in flavor, very meaty, smooth... really good. By the time everyone was done eating I knew I was way too full for any dessert, but from what I saw... this is the place for some decadent desserts. Normally I don't do this. But I thought it would be appropriate to give this place a third updated review, since tonight was the first time we ever tried their table side dining as opposed to their classic hibachi. Tonight I ordered the NY strip steak with a lobster tail. This dish is sort of done in a familiar, Americanized type cuisine. Only they offer this thicker than usual sauce on the side which somewhat resembles soy (only more sour) and the choices for side dishes are quite limited and rather unorthodox for this type of plate. Needless to say, I opted for fried rice as my side. The steak was decent enough. As usual, I ordered mine medium and they nailed the temperature. And whilst the steak could have used more seasoning, it wasn't bad. It was rather decent actually. Oh, in the photo I uploaded, you'll notice they top this off with fried onion strings. Ya know, this concept *could* work...only the particular onion strings they used were completely bland and therefore...utterly pointless to even include with the dish. Came off more like a garnish to me. Frankly, if I were making a similar dish at home, I would use French's fried onion strings....as those come in a can pre-seasoned. The lobster tail was decent as well. It was nice and tender, though I find it interesting that the menu describes this tail as being cooked in a garlic butter sauce yet...it tasted like it could have used a little more butter. Again, this concept *could* work...if we weren't in a Japanese restaurant and they offered a side of melted butter like they do in American restaurants. But I figure at this point I'm just nitpicking. The ultimate point of this review is to give an update on their table side service, since the menu options change, as you aren't really getting hibachi. The sushi options are still available. As for the service itself....it was slow. I honestly felt like they only had one waitress to spare for the entire section. Either that, or she was severely tied up with an overly large party elsewhere. Overall...it doesn't change the rating of this place for me much. Horrible experience. I want to say that this restaurant was having serious issues with the new opening rules after the Covid shutdown but I'm just not sure they could have screwed thus up so bad! The service was slow and incompetent. We were the only people seated in the main dining room away from the Teppan tables but they were at times too attentive and then not attentive enough. My teenage daughter ordered her standard Shirley Temple drink and they put too much grenadine in it and not enough ice. The Miso soup was lukewarm. We all asked for our steak to be cooked rare, instead it was medium. We also had members of the table order scallops and lobster, the scallops were inedible and the lobster was just okay. The filet was delicious, cooked perfectly. I had ordered the New York steak and chicken, and my chicken was delicious. I also ordered the salmon nigiri (traditional sushi) and loved it. Actually had two orders.. Didn't share it lol. They had bottles of japanese beer, Asahi, Kirin and Sapporro. My wife loves that... She had a Sapporo. The dinners came with fried rice and soup and salad. All were really good. Desert: get it. I ordered the koze cheesecake and my wife had the tempura ice cream. Both were great! The cheesecake is a normal slice, presented well, and the tempura ice cream is large enough to share! Absolutely recommend it. Prices are very fair. Pretty much no more and no less than any Teppanyaki style place. Which is of course where your food is cooked at the table in front of you on a late grill. The chef, in normal fashion, put on a show, which included flipping food from the grill into the guests mouth. Everyone nailed it, except me, that took 2 try's... In my defense the first shot hit my shoulder lol. 2nd flip, dead on. It's a very nice place and a great place to go with friends. Food is good, atmosphere is fun and casual. As with most teppanyaki places, the food for most tables is prepared right in front of you, so understand that when you leave, you're gonna smell like everything you just ate. So don't go here if right after eating you're going to be working alongside others in a confined area. Otherwise... Please check it out. Enjoy. Eat.
