Very disappointed with the large sushi platter my uncle picked up for us today. It was the Kamaaina Plate and all 96 pieces in the assortment were made with unseasoned (or severely under-seasoned) Suhi rice. It was unlike anything I've ever had from Kozo in 30 years. We have become accustomed to their flavorful sushi rice with a tasty amount of vinegar and sugar, but today's order tasted like it was made with plain rice. Recently was in Oahu for my bachelorette party and we ordered a party platter and some other items for the ten of us in the group for dinner. We ordered ahead online, and drove over to pick up the food. The platter was ready ahead of time and we only waited a couple of minutes afterwards for our other items. The shop itself is really to grab and go, with a counter and a bench to wait for your number to be called. There are a couple of little tables outside that are shared between the other businesses nearby. We noted a shrimp allergy in our group, and they called us to discuss how they could accommodate it (separate bag and separate boxes explicitly marked CONTAINS SHRIMP). Our shrimp-allergen friend was so grateful for this! The sushi and vegan spam musubi and rolls were SO DELICIOUS! I was a little worried that it wouldn't be enough food for all of us but there were ample leftovers that we happily nibbled on throughout the evening. I learned that not all kozo sushi's are created equally, this not being a better location. Learned the locations are franchised and luckily this is a stand alone location. First started off with calling and ordering a fried chicken Bento, but this location doesn't have it(at least two other locations do), instead of telling me they don't have it, she corrects me and ask if I meant the garlic chicken bento. This bento is then small than other locations and $2+ more. So for less food for more. There was also quite a bit of fat on the chicken itself. Fast food sushi... That doesn't make it any less delicious though how the expanded their menu is quite amazing. I remember way back in the day that my parents would order sushi for not just the New Years gathering but any with their friends and order a platter of sushi that was always done beautifully. What I do love that everything is made to order as many places may do so but do have some items grab and go but not here it's all made to order but doesn't mean that you'd wait forever for it as they do work efficiently the problem is for you to decide what you want is easier said than done with so many options but my favorite are the hand rolls since the completion isn't done until you unravel the nori from the wrapper so it's always nice and crunchy. Love this Kapahulu location with decent amount of free parking it shares with a few other biz which can get crowded but the option to have it is nice and convenient along with a quick stop at Jamba or Starbucks lol! The staff here is very nice as we had a nice conversation about Japan her dream destination there isn't seating in the very tiny and cozy shop but do have some tables outside which are usually taken by regulars so it's more of a stop and shop location. I recently had a potluck to attend and decided that a sushi platter would be perfect! I looked at Yelp reviews and chose the Kozo Sushi at this location. I was not disappointed. I called my order in and the young woman I spoke to was friendly and helpful. My Sushi Platter was ready for pickup on time. Chopsticks, Napkins and Shoyu was available if needed. Everything was packaged and presented very nicely. The assorted Sushi was fresh and delicious. It was also affordable and well worth it! At the potluck, the Sushi I brought was the first to be eaten up. I will definitely be back to get Sushi and highly recommended this Kozo Sushi location. read more

Nestled next to Starbucks it is not clearly visible from the street. I usually go to the one in kahala. This one has way more parking and much friendlier service. I came around 4:45 and to my surprise it was happy hour hand rolls. Buy 3 get 1 free! I was delighted to hear it, love a good deal. Now that I know this I will be coming back again. I got 3 crab cucumber rolls a Natto roll. All were perfect. Lots of pictures of the different menu items so it's easy for you to see what you are getting and good for kids too. Seating area outside is a bit unkept and could use a power wash but that's on building management. I took mine to the park and ate it. Will be back for some more happy hour hand rolls. read more

The worker in the front had the best customer service (09/21/23 @ around 2pm)! she was so sweet and attentive and just for that, i will definitely be coming back again. i ordered the ahi lovers set and a habanero hand roll. for both the total came out to about $18 + a few cents for the paper bag. which isn't bad at all, considering sushi at safeway and food land can cost the same if not more. the sushi was great especially for the price, habanero roll wasn't that spicy but my spice tolerance is very high lol. interior was well kept and the vibe of the place was relaxed. read more

I get food here about once a month. I usually order a Kid Bento and a few handrolls like a Spicy Ahi Roll or Spam Roll. They are all delicious and the rice is good. I've started to get the Sushi Udon Bento which includes ahi nigiri, ebi nigiri, 2 pieces of California maki rolls, and one inari. The noodles and sushi taste good. Service is always polite and quick. Over the years Kozo has proven to be a decently priced takeout sushi place compared to their competitors. They do a special deal where you can order 3 hand rolls and get the fourth one free from 2pm to 5pm. Update on this Kozo Sushi located on Kapahuluu next to Starbucks. I'm not sure if this location is franchise but it's totally different feel from other other 2 location I normally go to. For example they just give your sushi as is. They charge for a bag like a grocery store lol. The King st and the Kahala location at least put your hand roll or maki sushi in a plastic bag free of charge . Also this location is high tech their menu board is all digital and it's hard to read. Also they have a computer so you can put in your order and pay by a card so you don't have to wait for a counter person . It's totally different from the other Kozo sushi . Plus the person at the counter made a mistake on my order . I'll probably not return to this particular Kozo sushi in the future. I will definitely go to my usual Kozo location. Awhile back, someone posted a photo on Facebook of a sushi platter for her dinner and I decided then and there that would be on my bucket list - a sushi platter all to myself. Well, I couldn't really eat all of it myself but it was super fun to try. Kozo Kapahulu has awesome happy hour deals, etc. that other kozos don't (I called a couple of other locations, and they had no idea what I was talking about - made me feel a lil crazy). Anyway, Kozo Kapahulu's Black Friday deals were for discounts on gift cards, and an unbelievable price for a platter of sushi, oh, and a deal on a spicy ahi bowl - so I told the family to ditch the thanksgiving leftovers, and they could help eat my leftovers from the sushi platter, haha. The aloha platter was huge with lots of fresh fish - ahi, aka (my fave), egg (let the kiddies enjoy that), and shrimp and salmon (other faves). Also love the small rolls, cucumber, daikon, and ahi that are covered in nori. I didn't quite make my goal of eating a whole platter myself, but I also did enjoy the spicy ahi bowl and an unagi roll (free for signing up for five stars!). Great for takout. Online ordering is the way to go here. It's so easy to place your order, pay online, and just pick up. Although if you want to use a Fivestars promotion, you'd have to pay there. In that case, call in your order so it's still ready when you arrive! My favorite item is the spicy crunchy ahi bowl. It's got great flavor and texture with the light and crispy tempura atop the ahi and rice. I don't even know what the 2 sauces you get are (lol), but they are both delicious. The rolls are also great. They are packaged to keep the nori separate from the rest until you're ready to eat it so it's nice and crunchy. Been going to Kozo Sushi since childhood. The Kapahulu location is right next to Starbucks and Jamba Juice. It has a parking lot and cars are always going in and out so it isn't too hard to find parking. Great place to order a platter for a party but it's the spicy ahi don and dragon maki that are my favorites. As the times have changed, I think Kozo has remained pretty untouched. It can feel a little dated in comparison to other places but is a Hawaii staple. read more

Hate to write this review since I've been a customer here for a long time, but when SANITATION becomes an issue, I think it must be addressed. Went to this location to make an order in person at about 6:15 pm. They ask that you be patient since they make everything fresh so it might take a while. Fine. Since it's a bit tight in the store and they have traffic from people ordering on the kiosk, I decide to wait at the table outside the window, clearly visible by the register worker. Well... 30 minutes go by and I don't have my order, which was a relatively small order, two egg makis and a salmon lover. I go back into the store and ask how much longer it'll be. I'm asked to repeat what I ordered (I know, red flag instantly) and after I repeat my order they point to three boxes sitting on the front counter. Here's the problem. I watched at least two customers from my seat open each box to see if that was THEIR order. Upon learning it wasn't, the boxes were left on the counter for 20+ minutes with me looking at them, but not sure if that was my order or an order in progress. On top of this, the worker at the register looked at me like 2-3 times while I was waiting, but didn't let me know it was my because they didn't know who's order it was. So what's the point of making people wait for fresh sushi when you're gonna leave it on the counter for 20 minutes while the customer is literally sitting outside the door? Also, how in the world did you pass the health inspection when u let other customers open people's orders? Why don't you LEAVE the orders on the back shelf until they're picked up, do you have any idea how UNSANITARY and GROSS that is? That's the last part of this review. When I addressed the situation in the store, all I got was a weak, "I'm sorry" from like 2 workers. If this ever happens again, and a customer TELLS you that their order was opened by multiple parties and left on a counter for 20 minutes, DO NOT LET THEM LEAVE WITH THAT ORDER. It is UNLAWFUL to let a customer leave with a contaminated order knowingly. Why nobody made my order again, I have no idea, but this was it for me. Here's my advice. All the KOZO stores are independently owned. Go to either location on South King St. or Kahala Mall, you would never have this type of problem at these locations. If you do decide to go here, never leave the store. Stand 2 feet in front of the register so they don't forget you until you get your order. Don't be courteous like me and wait outside, courteous gets punished. Again, completely baffled by how UNSANITARY this location is. What happened tonight was 100% a VIOLATION of the state health code. read more

I've been coming to Kozo Sushi since I was a little kid and will be a forever patron. Since moving to the mainland, I can't express how much I appreciate having solid and affordable takeout sushi. Specifically, the Kapahulu Kozo holds a warm place in my heart as it has the best service out of all Kozos (and I've been to a lot of Kozos!). Food: The dragon maki is amazing! A crunchy shrimp tempura and lettuce wrapped in perfectly seasoned sushi rice. To top off the roll there is spicy ahi, unagi sauce, and a mayonaise sauce. 10/10 would recommend! Another favorite is the lunchbox set which comes with a nice assortment of nigiri sushi. Lastly, if you just want a lil snack go for a hand roll or two! I love the salmon avocado roll. Price/Service/Parking: Price for takeout sushi is totally reasonable (~$10-11 for a roll). I can't name a better takeout sushi place for something fast, consistent, and yummy. My boyfriend and I usually order from the Kahala Kozo, but the Kapahulu Kozo is open later and convenient for late dinners. We like the food. We've had the dons, the makis, the hand rolls, and a bento. It's all great, EXCEPT for the chicken that we got in a bento that was supposed to be garlic chicken (per the menu), but what we received was teriyaki I'm pretty sure. The reason why I'm only giving 3/5 is because of the mediocre service. Don't get me wrong though! Some of the employees are great, particularly this younger female worker who was persistently working the cash register at 7:30pm on a Tuesday night. The issue seems to be with the kitchen. The last two times that I've come here, even though I had placed an order first, I noticed that 2-3 groups/people who ordered after me (even if their orders were the same size) received their orders way before me. Also, we witnessed an older, female, kitchen worker raising her voice at the young cashier and telling her to "COME COME COME" into the kitchen to look at the kitchen display system when a maki from our order was missing. Really awkward for us, and we felt bad for the young worker. My boyfriend wanted to tell the cashier to hang in there.
