I was watching Vic & Jeff YouTube videos on great LA restaurants to try. KP Town was mentioned. I said I know where that restaurant is... right in front of Alhambra Valley Bowl. I didn't waste any time. I brought my Mom here with me on a Saturday late afternoon. Free parking is available in front of the restaurant and on the side + back of the building. It's a small mom and pop place that holds up to 30 people in capacity. Interior was super clean and comfortable. Only two gentleman staff were working at the time. They were friendly and quite attentive. Upon entry, only one table pre-occupied at the time. As time past, more customers came in. Specialty dishes are from inspired and rare flavors of Kaiping, a city in the Wuyi region of the Pearl River Delta. First time hearing about this city. Their popular dishes are Kaiping crystal dumplings, clay pot rice, congee, slow-simmered pork stomach, black chicken soup, fish paste-stuffed tofu dishes, and hand-shredded chicken. We didn't get any of these on our first visit because we didn't know LOL. Two dishes we did get were pretty good. Prices were reasonable. Highly recommend both of them. As much as I would love to get them again, I will have to put them on hold and try the favorites mentioned above on my next visit. 1. KP Town Savory Tang Yuan - WOW, broth was SO DELICIOUS and SWEET! Chinese sausages and veggies were fresh and good quality ingredients. Tang yan(s) were chewy and bouncy. My Mom loved this dish and so did I! 2. Stir-Fried Cauliflower with Preserved Meat - Well balanced sweet and savory Chinese sausages... the best I have ever eaten! Tons of tenderly sweet Taishan cauliflower... just delish! Just one small gripe, it would have been nice to get one small bowl of white rice with this dish. Amazing dishes with quality taste and flavors in a clean and friendly environment will bring me back every time. YES, I will be back! Food and sauces were pretty good. The problem was the small dish sizes do not match the cost. These are basically the countryside food of Guangzhou, and I expected hearty servings typical of village dishes. Instead, it was more like dainty Kings royal dish sizes that presented village food. I originally went in for their clay pot rice, but saw the Guangzhou style clay pot rather than a Hong Kong style one. I decided on this instead and it was still delicious nonetheless. I saw this restaurant on Yelp for a while, but I never got to give it a try. I finally decided to come here for brunch one day. KP actually stands for Kai Ping, a city in Guandong, China. I don't know much about Kai Ping, but I generally like Cantonese food, so I decided to give this restaurant a try. The restaurant is super clean. There are not a ton of restaurant staff there, but the staff are nonetheless very attentive. We ended up sharing a preserved meat steamed rice, the combination pan fried tofu and pepper with minced fish, and the beef offal noodles. Everything was overall solid. The steamed rice was fairly standard, nothing stand out, but still solid. The tofu and peppers were really good, not as good as the ones in Hong Kong though. So this was a pleasant surprise on my recent trip home, a Chinese restaurant that specializes in Kaiping food. As a Kaiping boy myself, it warmed my heart to see my tiny city of origin being represented. What is Kaiping food exactly, I can't say how it differs greatly from general Canto food but it definitely had some dishes I've never had outside of Kaiping or home made by my parents. The space itself is rather small but its a bright, casual spot that is reminiscent of side street restaurants in Kaiping, except like 1000x cleaner and up to US health code standards. We were quickly sat but the restaurant filled up shortly after we sat (~12pm on a Tuesday afternoon). Our waitress took our order, let us know claypot will take a little longer, which we were ok with. Food was all coming out fresh, as it was ready so yes, food did take a bit longer than normal ~10-20 mins for all food to arrive but I'm not complaining. Food wise, we ordered the yellow eel clay pot rice, pepper/tofu with minced fish, KP style fried chicken wings, and stir fried pork offal. I enjoyed all the dishes and found them to taste "cleaner" than in Kaiping which meant it didn't quite hit the nostalgia factor for me. That doesn't mean the food isn't in and of itself good though. We were provided a wintermelon soup that was a great starter, light but flavorful. The pork offal was cooked wonderfully and each of the various cuts seemed to be cooked well, with none being overly chewy or undercooked and the sauce was very flavorful and savory. The KP chicken wings were not something I've had before but it had the like classic Canto tangerine peel flavor (Canto kids that ate those little packets of dried tangerine peels as snacks unite). The wings were very crisp and juicy overall and though not a dish I grew up with, definitely something I'd come back for. The clay pot was done very well with a nice amount of crispy rice on the bottom, flavorful and tender eel, and perfectly cooked individual rice grains (a sign of a truly well done clay pot). The panfried tofu/peppers with minced fish was also great and a dish I miss greatly. Everything was well fried and flavored and nothing was burnt or even charred. I'd suggest adding some white pepper to taste for that true experience (granted I don't think they care about your personal preference in Kaiping so feel free to just heap it on). I'm glad my hometown is getting some representation in the SGV. I hear my home dialect now and then around but it was a new experience hearing everyone speak my home dialect while out in the states. I may be biased but I'd recommend this spot for general Canto food but specifically their clay pot and tofu/peppers with minced fish. The latter isn't common outside of Kaiping (to my knowledge) so it was a welcome surprise. read more

This place surprised me as my family and I are fairly picky when it comes to eating Chinese out, however, it's a solid place that churns out food quickly for a satisfying meal. We ordered some repeats from our first time including the orange zest wings, KP Town eel claypot and beef brisket rice noodle rolls. The wings were more orange the first time, but they were still very juicy at the least. We love the fact that the claypots actually have crispy rice bottoms - be aware they do take 20 minutes to come out for that reason. The beef brisket rice rolls remain a favorite - tasty and tender. We also enjoy any of the porridges, though the liver can be tough sometimes, but the fried chinese donut that you MUST order as an add-on, make for a delicious nostalgic meal. Other classics such as cauliflower are good choices for some veg that is not mushy. The crystal dumplings are a new one for me actually. I've had these basically boiled peanut dumplings, but they were strangely addictive to taste and texture (savory peanut butter and qq texture). It did get busy for lunch with a line out the door as it is small so watch out for that, but service is fast and they serve hot water for the elder Asians in your life of course! read more

We ordered beef offal dry noodle and chicken and mushroom covered in leaf. It wasn't the best chicken pieces but at least the flavoring is there. They serve savoring tang yuan here!!! I always crave that randomly so I'll be back to try this. It wasn't busy when we first walked in but people started trickling in as we were eating. This review includes my experience of my two visits. A relatively new restaurant in town that specialize in Kai Ping cuisine. The place is small, simple, and cozy. The interior design if filled with creative and unique Chinese characters and food pictures. Stir-Fried Cauliflower with Preserved Meat: The cauliflower is nicely cooked (soft but still crunchy). It is nicely seasoned, not salty at all. A great veggie selection. This dish was ordered on both of my visits. Beef Brisket Steamed Vermicelli: The noodle comes with a fair amount of beef briskets. The noodle is lightly seasoned with the sauce on top, there are also white pepper and siracha on the side. A different option to eat noodles. Pan-Fried Tofu with Minced Fish & Pan-Fried Pepper with Minced Fish: A must try dish! Very traditional dish. The minced fish is nicely seasoned, and a well combo with green pepper and tofu. It is not overly fried, and not very oily. Chicken Clay Pot: Love this chicken clay pot. Compared to other similar chicken pot in canto/hong Kong restaurants, this is one of my favorite. The chicken is nicely seasoned and tender. It is not salty! Definitely recommend this if you enjoy eating chickens. The onions along with it are also tasty. Steam Chicken with Mushroom: I had high hopes in this dish, but it was REALLY salty. We had trouble finishing this dish. The waitress misunderstood this dish with the steamed rice with chicken and mushrooms, so make sure to state it clearly when ordering. However, I don't recommend this dish because it was too salty. And there's no aroma from the (bamboo) leaves. The chicken is tender, just hope they can improve the flavor of this dish. Steam Rice with Chicken and Mushroom + Soup: I love this steamed rice! The chicken and mushrooms are nicely cooked and flavored, and come with a great amount. Definitely recommend on trying this. Another great chicken dish. Steam Rice with Beef & Pickled Mustard + Soup: I didn't quit enjoy this one. The beef is not tender, quit hard and chewy. The pickled mustard that they used is spicy and sour. I don't recommend on trying this one. Beef Offal Noodle Soup: The noodle comes with a nice amount of beef offal. The noodle is cooked to the perfect texture, and nicely flavored. Overall, my two experiences at KP Town were great. It's a family run restaurant, so the wait time may be longer during busy times. During our second visit, one of our order was made wrong (Steamed Chicken with mushrooms), the owner apologized and served the correct order. Due to the long wait, they gave us a free lemon tea. The service is very friendly and welcoming. I hope they can expand their menu with more options. FYI, the portion of their food can be quit small for large parties. read more

This unassuming place where the unfortunate golden mile bowling closed is a gem. The crystals dumplings were small and delicious and packed full of flavor. The stir fried pork offal with ginger and scallions was very tender and a large portion. The mixture of vegetables and the pork was very generous. My friend ordered the KP town bbq pork rice and soup which the soup was very homely and soothing while the pork rice itself was very flavorful. The staff was very attentive and the lemon iced tea was great! Not too sugary and they even gave us refills! Parking is easy and the place is easy to get into. This KP Town Cuisine is located inside a strip plaza on Valley and New Ave. in Alhambra. (next to the Bowling alley and 101 Noodle Express) It just opened about 2 months ago and its specialty is Kaiping-style food. The place is small but cozy with some cute Chinese signs in simplified Chinese. My mom and I ordered the Braised Duck Noodle Soup ($13.99) and KP Town crystal dumplings ($10.99). For the Braised Duck Noodles, we picked dry noodles instead of noodle soup and you can choose flat noodles/vermicelli/rice noodles/egg noodles. We waited for 30 minutes then our orders came. The crystal dumplings were mini dumplings and it had 18 pieces inside. It was a small dish and the fillings inside were also tiny. The fillings inside had chopped peanuts. (Make sure you are not allergic to peanuts). The taste was okay but we did not think that it was worth the price. For the Braised duck noodles, they gave a good portion of noodles and the taste was not bad but the braised ducks were chopped into so tiny and did not have much meat (maybe only a few pieces). They need to improve the service, the food portions, and quality. read more

The food here is fantastic. This cozy spot has taken over the old Quickly location--so much so that the original sign is still up. The owner is really friendly. The food is solid but not sure if it warrants a lot of hype. Portions were definitely on the smaller side. We got the crystal dumplings (tiny), beef brisket side order (good, but pieces were so small), braised duck soup noodle (they cut the duck into really small pieces), the preserved meat rice and pork rib rice (kind of like clay pot but faster, but also smaller), and get thousand year egg congee. That last one was probably the only thing that was decently sized. It's a nice change of pace and worth a try (there were repeat customers there when we ate there). This was my first time encountering a restaurant serving authentic Kaiping cuisine in the San Gabriel area, and it did not disappoint. The atmosphere was welcoming, and the fact that the owner personally manages the restaurant added a special touch. He genuinely cared about our experience and even took the time to ask for our feedback on the food. The chicken pot stood out as one of the best dishes, and the chicken wings were incredibly juicy and flavorful. Many of their offerings aim to recreate the flavors of their small hometown in China, and you can truly feel and taste that authenticity in every bite. I'll definitely be returning to explore more of their diverse menu--there are so many dishes I'm excited to try! read more
