Hidden Gem in Alhambra - Finally Tried It After 4 Years of Driving By! I've lived in Alhambra for the last 4 years and drove past this place almost every day, always assuming it was just another hot pot spot. It never looked super busy, so I kept putting it off. Big mistake--don't let that happen to you like it did to me! We finally went in and ordered a bunch: the Spicy Beef Shank Rice Noodle, Rattan Pepper Sliced Beef Rice Noodle, Popcorn Chicken, Sesame Balls, Popping Brown Sugar Rice Cake, Fried Milk Rolls, and Fried Taro Balls. Everything was outstanding. The noodles were amazing--fresh, chewy, with high-quality ingredients you can really taste in every bite. The broths had that perfect spicy kick without being overwhelming, and the beef was super tender. My wife and I couldn't stop eating; literally everything we tried was delicious. She especially loved the Fried Taro Balls--they were crispy outside, soft and flavorful inside. The sides/snacks were all hits too: the Popcorn Chicken was perfectly seasoned and crispy, the Sesame Balls and Popping Brown Sugar Rice Cake brought great texture and sweetness, and the Fried Milk Rolls were a fun surprise. Was craving rice noodles so decided to give this place a try as it's been on my radar. I think it was okay, but not as amazing as I expected. Menu option is kind of limited. I went with the tomato and sliced beef for $14.99. This came with bean sprouts, which I wasn't aware of, and there was a lot of bean sprouts inside - almost as much as there was rice noodle. Not a fan of bean sprouts but will eat if I need to, but in this case - it totally overwhelmed the dish. There also wasn't enough rice noodle for me. Everything else was good, but that kinda blew it for me. Also got the spicy soup with beef and tomatoes. This is more of a gentle burn in spice they slowly works its way up. It's good if you like spice. Restaurant wasn't too busy when we arrived but got a good amount of customers by the time we were leaving. Workers are friendly. Not sure if I'd be back though. One of my favorite noodle spot in SGV area. My go to dish would be tomato sliced beef rice noodles- the tomato soup base is the perfect balance of sweet and tart. The portion rice is very generous, I can never finish and would end up taking leftovers. Parking: they have a lot next to the restaurant, I never had an issue with finding a spot. It's a really nice, clean, casual noodle place. I like that the menu is simple and not overwhelming. They have four "chef's choice" noodle bowls that offer the perfect variety so it's easy to get one that fits your taste buds. You can also build your own bowl by choosing a base, and that's what my friend did. Hers actually looked a little better than mine and it had more noodles, and it cost $2 less. Maybe that's the way to go. Anyway, I was happy with what I ordered, which was the fish and seafood bowl. $16.99. Good deal! They also have very nice selection of rice bowls, fried snacks, and beverages. The server was super nice. There are QR codes at the table, but the server took our order at the table. Love their green pepper beef shank noodles, it's not oily like a mala noodle soup but still got a kick to it and mild numbing sensation and mostly importantly, not dying for water after the meal. Vegan review: I came here randomly because I was at a celebration of life nearby. I spoke with the server and she told me that anything can be modified to vegan and she understood what it was. I would definitely recommend this if you're looking for a clean soup with a good amount of toppings. The soup was very rich in the bone broth flavor yet felt clean. The rice noodles were nicely cooked and there was a filling portion in the bowl. I didn't taste too much of the chrysanthemum but it was still a good tasting broth. I also tried their bulgogi rice bowl and it was essentially a thin sliced beef bowl similar to yoshinoya but with kimchi and a fried runny egg on top which made it really good! Their appetizers were also delicious! I enjoyed their fried chicken wings which was lightly salted and seasoned well and also their fried squid which was strong in the squid taste. I tried their special iced lemon tea and the Yaxi lemon tea which is the "duck poop fragrance" Chinese specialty tea. Both were super refreshing and I enjoyed Yaxi lemon tea for the subtle taste of fragrant tea. The workers were attentive and very helpful in giving recommendations. Got the house special chrysanthemum noodle and it was pretty good. I liked that it had a little bit of everything so I could taste most of their offerings. The prawn in my soup came without a shell or head, which makes it easier to eat but I can't help to think that it's missing all the yummy flavors from the head. Note for people that don't like gristle, the chicken had quite a bit of chewy gristle bits. 1 piece was especially hard, to the point that it would make me reconsider ever having it as a protein, and I love my gristle. The temperature of my noodle dish was interesting. Most of the topping was cold, and the broth on top, but under the noodles...it could melt your face off. We arrived around 6:25 pm and my friend came a little before 6:40 pm since she was running late. I let the servers know inside that we will be sitting outside. We were brought menus and paper placemats right away. After looking over the menu, we ended up ordering: Popcorn Chicken, $7.95 prior to tax- My husband thought it would be good to start off with an appetizer. The portion size was fine to share and I thought the chicken was okay. But I did think it was a little on the salty side. Spicy Beef Shank Rice Noodle, $13.99 prior to tax- My husband and our friend decided to each order this bowl, as the employee who took our order had suggested this dish if you like eating spicy foods. My dish had chicken, ham and beef slices, shrimp, bok choy, quail eggs corn and rice noodle. The soup was a whitish color and I requested for it to have no spice added to it since I do not eat spicy foods. I really enjoyed this dish and loved the flavor of the soup. I felt very filled after eating it and would order this dish again. We got the smashed cucumber salad, fried squid, and chrysanthemum noodle soup. 6.5/10 on the cucumber salad.
