Here's what I liked...the food was very flavorful. Though my husband and I both got a wedge and mine was 1/2 the size of his and that was all I ordered for my meal. He gave the KC strip a 7 out 10. I loved the potato gratin that he ordered. Here's what I didn't like...the service was super slow even though the restaurant wasn't busy and the server didn't apologize for the delays. We visited the first night of Restaurant Week, and while the food was decent, the overall experience was disappointing. Several dishes were overly salted, and the Caesar salad was especially sad--wilted lettuce and lacking freshness. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The restaurant was very crowded, but not adequately staffed to handle the volume.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Service was slow throughout the night, and they ran out of items on the Restaurant Week menu. I was served melted sorbet and had to send it back. Our dinner took nearly three hours, largely due to long stretches of waiting to be served or checked on. Busy nights are understandable, but the lack of pacing and execution really took away from what could have been a much better experience. As the name says it is a Butcher & Bistro place. However, these are two different places. Yes, same owners and they are connected by a doorway. My experience was in the Butcher place. We walked in and it reminded me of a hometown butcher shop. They had a variety of meats, cheeses, condiments, wine & other food related items. The staff was very friendly and helpful. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It is a cozy place.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] You can get things to go or just eat there. We ate there I got the Reuben sandwich. Is it the best one in the area? I don't know as I have not been to every place in the area who offers a Reuben. However, it is the best one I have eaten. The sandwich was perfectly maid. The bread was a marble rye, not to thin and thick enough to hold together as you ate it. For the cheese you had a choice of Swiss or Gouda. I went with the Swiss. The sandwich was warmed up just enough to nicely melt the cheese. They make their own corn beef, which you can buy there as well. They had other things that they make themselves, like stuff mushrooms, which looked really good. The corn beef was excellent. With all that said, be prepared to pay $20 for that sandwich. Expensive, but I would say worth it. We also got one of their lunch specials. It was a 4" sub, chips and a soda for $10. As my wife said, it was just okay. This was our first time to McGregor's so we had no idea what to expect. It's very unassuming when you pull up. If you arrive before 7 on a Friday the crowd tends to be more of a mature age group. The place wasn't super busy but had a fair amount of people already enjoying dinner. One negative was the bartender lacked personality. When you sit at a bar you tend to expect a little conversation with the bartender. This one wasn't interested and barely made eye contact with us. He also charged us full price for our oysters instead of the happy hour price. Then the hostess said she would credit us back for the mistake and that never happened. The food was good. I enjoyed the Short Rib dinner. It was juicy and tender and served over mashed potatoes and a side of carrots. The carrots were cooked perfectly. My husband had the French Dip sandwich, also very good along with a side of Parmesan truffle fries. Our waitress was also not the most personable person. We felt she was a little disengaged. I've always wanted to try this place so we went for a special occasion. The happy hour drinks were pretty tasty. My party and I got the Desperado. For dinner my party got the hanger, steak and some au gratin potatoes on the side and the steak was tender and the potatoes were good but nothing to write home about. I got the beef and reef which was calamari and an American wagyu with tender mash on the side. And for the price it definitely was not worth it but it wasn't bad. The Calamari was sitting on top of the steak in a bernnaisse style sauce so it got a little bit soggy and it was a little bit overcooked. I'm not sure why they put a sauce over the steak. A medium rare steak (especially a wagyu) really doesn't need anything besides salt and pepper. The wagyu plate was $70. For the quality I think $45-50 Would have been fair. We split a triple chocolate cheesecake and that was really tasty. I'll probably go back and try some of their appetizers on happy hour. read more

Incredible. Not sure why people close before advertised times. Drive all the way there and show up before it closes -- and sure enough they closed before advertised time. Everything put away. Stuff wrapped up. Doors locked. Lights out. That process shouldn't start until the advertised close time. Even if it means the minute before. Move the hours up if they don't want to stay open. It doesn't take much to make a difference these days and closing before posted hours is unacceptable. I guess there's is no fight anymore. Manager came out to talk and didn't go any better. Dug in like a tick. Had alcohol on his breath. Made up excuses how it was dead for the last 45 minutes. Had to get employees home. Even if it is the last minute, the place should be open and willing to serve and meet any order. If they say it takes time to breakdown, then they should change the time to when that is. Stay open until advertised time!! Pretty simple. I can't imagine a bank closing early and saying they don't want your money. A small business like this should be even more eager than a bank, but for some reason for them to close early, makes sense. Won't be back. Wife and I came here on Halloween night because we didn't feel like staying in and our teenager daughter had beaten us down trying to negotiate why she should be allowed to go out dressed like a stripper barbie. Prices are high for an Overland Park strip mall restaurant but not out of line for plating more typical of the Plaza or Downtown steakhouse. We just left from dinner now and WOW. We split the steak flight- neither of us eats much at any given time, so it was plenty of food. [Note: there are pictures on here showing menus that indicates that it is served with salad/ sides/ wine. That is no longer the case.] Our drinks were excellent- red wine for me, a delicious cocktail for my husband. They bring you bread and herb butter when you sit down- my husband gobbled it down, but I didn't care for the butter as I abhor dill and felt it was oddly prominent. The steak was well cooked, and even the dressed arugula on the plate was tasty. We found it quite nice. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The atmosphere is nice, though I found some of the decoration slightly odd. The main walls were grey, the booths were olive green, and the walls to separate booths were blue. 2 trips to McGregor's, I will talk about both. For my first dinner experience, I did not have much expectations since I did not know much about it. From the outside, it does not look like much. Inside, it gives off a upscale dinner feel with white table cloths and and a beautiful decor and bar. We each ordered a cocktail which were both very good. I wanted to try the Butcher's Special ROSEMARY & MUSHROOM CRUSTED PRIME RIB dinner which is what i ordered. Our server returned after a few minutes and said the Prime Rib was prepared Medium Well that night (I ordered Medium Rare) and wanted to know if I still wanted it. ....no thank you. I changed to the AKAUSHI RIBEYE 14oz. It was ver good, but not quite worth the $65 price tag...it seemed small and thin for a 14oz. steak. My second trip I did order and receive the Prime Rib dinner. I was disappointed in the texture and flavor. I had my girlfriend try it and she had the same opinion as I did...it felt and tasted like liver (if you ever had liver and onions)... It did have a better flavor as I got more to the middle of the cut, but it was still not quite the Prime Rib I am used to at other steak places. The bread is so soft and fresh, the meat is seasoned exquisitely, and dipping it in the au jus brings it all together to perfection *chefs kiss*. The whipped potatoes are fluffy and flavored beautifully. The Brussels sprouts are crispy and tart and cooked impeccably. (I had to whip out my thesaurus to find the words to accurately describe how DELICIOUS everything is). Kristin is such a delight, having her as our server was wonderful! I want to start the review by saying everyone is extremely friendly, especially the maitre d', who chatted with me while I was waiting for my brunch companions to arrive. We all started with mimosas. I got a pineapple one. I like that they serve the champagne separate from the juice, which came in a mini carafe, so you could mix to your preference. I ordered the biscuits and gravy, and my friends ordered the avocado toast and a Caesar salad. We all really enjoyed the food. I will say I didn't love the fennel in my gravy or the fact that the potatoes came out separately, like 5 mins later (must have been a timing issue). But again, everyone was extremely friend and the food was good. I will say, this wasn't my favorite venue for brunch because it's DARK. The dark gray walls are more suited to a dinner spot. And I'd be interest to see more color in the art for more personality. Since I was early, I popped into the butcher shop to look around. I was disappointed that I didn't see any oxtail (why is it impossible to find in KC now?!) but it had some good looking meat in the displays and interesting products on the shelf. Who knew this was an actual butcher shop? It's very small, and it looks like they have extremely high quality meats by the look of the pricing on everything. They have a lot of stuff in this place that seems like someone who has an upper tier understanding of money stocked this place. The pricing in my opinion makes it impossible to purchase anything at this place, and what with the fairway meat market right up the hill with an unbelievable assortment comparatively, it's no question this place was empty in the middle of the day. I understand they've got a lunch special and they make sandwiches and things of that nature, and they have a quite a few common items, but the pricing was so exorbitant that I thought these things must be grass-fed or something. Either that or what you're actually buying is buying a steak with a partial lease payment attached to every piece of meat. The dining restaurant portion of the building looks formidable, which I don't think is what anyone should be going for in a restaurant. You can't see the dining area, it's just this hallway being maintained by a single podium'd host. I felt like I was arriving at a place where Republican congressman meet on Thursdays. Anywho, the place is neat, and it offers lots of different meat products. But it feels a little too niche, catering not to the whole, but to a few. I don't think I'd stop back in, because I get most of my stuff from five other vendors. Very upper echelon though, so if you got time stop in and see what they're offering. You might find something worth your time. I'm a cheapskate; I make my own bone broth and butchered chickens to save cash. Food - All of this was perfectly cooked amazing food. Of course this is also food that you can get at many other locations. For this visit we ordered the Scotch Egg and Crab Cakes. As you can imagine these were very good. However, they used a sweet sausage for the Scotch Egg... it is an option but not one that got anywhere close to the British delicacy. As for the crabcakes... while good... they were small. Very little portion for the two of us to share even the two appetizers. As for the main... I had the grouper and my date had scallops. Both were again very good in flavor but extremely small in portion. Service - Our waitress and bartender teams were fantastic. They were able to talk us through all of the on menu items as well as taking good care of us when we ordered drinks off of menu. Ambiance - this is a unique place. Do not let the fact that it is placed in a strip mall influence your decision to try it out. Also the little butchershop next to if is fantastic! This place I will go to often as I can. Price - Ok here is where the stars go away. I shop and cook often. I know how much these specific cuts should cost and how much extra should be charged for the cooking and the service. So far it looks like they have priced, like the restaurant is purchasing at full price from their own butcher shop next door, which is already marked up. Some people were almost finished eating a part (burger) of their meal when another part (fries) was delivered. Bacon or sausage comes with pancakes, but someone was charged extra for the protein. Once inside, you would never guess you were nestled in suburbia. Cloth napkins and proper table cloths grace a dining room fully set for wine and bread service. Dark grey walls and emerald booths create an intimate setting for a nice dinner out. We had a reservation but needed to push it out a bit. I called and my request was accommodated with minimal effort on my part. When we arrived, the host was friendly and welcoming. Service was friendly and very prompt. Drinks were delivered with care, as was the rest of our order. Our server was upbeat and friendly. She needs more tables to wait, so please go see her!! The food was amazing. We skipped the salad, having had a big lunch, and we shared a steak flight with lobster mashed. The LM was FULL of tender chunks of lobster claw. So rich and tasty. If I could make one suggestion, they could use a little more butter and salt maybe creme just to make them perfect. THE STEAKS THO! The steak flight was amazing. Cooked to perfection which is difficult with smaller cuts. Seasoned simply but well. I'd get this again but next time Imma be greedy and not share. Our experience was excellent from making the reservation and updating it, being welcomed at the door and seated, to our friendly and attentive server. Pricing was extravagant for what the food actually was. The steaks themselves were good. However, the rest of the food was subpar and our party sent dishes back. I'm a fan of butcher shops and this space has a restaurant connected and I'll be back to try that out for sure. First let's talk about the meats they make in house like the German bologna was some of the best I've had, I may never eat Oscar mayer again . Their burger patties were next level, here I thought the cheddar/ bacon was good, but the pepper encrusted pattie blew me away. So much is going on from the local products they have in stock and a few brought in. I've eaten here twice, both times at the bar. I had the same bartender both times, and he is very nice. Nothing here has wowed me, which is ok, but also means I don't have much of a reason to go a third time or to recommend it. I tried the burger and like most restaurant burgers around town it had no seasoning and ended up just being something to fill me rather than to enjoy. It's been addressed in other reviews, but I really think they made a poor decision to attempt fine dining with this price point in this location. It's just a strange spot. When I left at 6:00 on a Wednesday evening there were only 3 parties of two at tables and 3 guests at the bar. On my way out, I said thanks to young guy with long blond hair sitting with his phone at the host stand, but he could not be bothered to look up or acknowledge me. So that was the final impression they chose to provide. I suspect you should probably try this place soon if you are interested before it's gone. Or don't. read more

The decor of the restaurant is nice and the service was alright but a tad slow which I will chock up to the new restaurant kinks to work out. I would have liked it better had the steak been seasoned just a tad more as well as the potatoes. Don't get the oysters. They were served with straight up hot sauce instead of a cocktail sauce and were not pleasant at all. This is a hidden gem in a strip mall in South JOCO. It's very good fine dining with impeccable service. They have a very good happy hour and the food is absolutely delicious. Our last visit we shared the steak flight (ribeye, filet and strip + salad + dessert + one glass of wine). It was amazing and a ton of food. Make sure you watch the hours as they don't have traditional hours. It's a beautiful place and set back from the door so it definitely doesn't feel like you're in a strip mall. Well done! read more

Came here with my sister for a little girls night. We both started with the pineapple tini which was yummy. Then we had Caesar salad which was not traditional but super yummy. We shared a filet, the mushroom ravioli and the onion rings. The ravioli was to die for!! The onion rings were very yummy too. I will definitely be back. Hope this place makes it! read more
