Awesome Tenderloin, you had better be hungry. It was not only huge, but had good flavor. There are other places in town that tote one large tenderloin, but,they usually have nothing for flavor. The onion rings were very good, they were not the out of the freezer section junk the their competitors pass off. There is a small staff that was very helpful and friendly. It is a neighborhood dive bar with alot of character. It is not some place you go for craft cocktails, it is a good place for having a cold beer and hang out with friends and shoot a game or two of pool. The only knock is that there are steps to get in and out. As a old broken down vet it is tough to get in and out. read more

Good old fashioned food. Open faced roast beef was wonderful. Looking forward to going back to try the Reubens and Tenderloin.

I worked there as a busboy in 67 & 68. My name is Brad Hughes and I live in Cottage Grove Mn. Ernie was the owner and everyone came there. Sugar Creek at that time was a great place to live when you were a kid. There were bars up and down Sterling all the parents were at the bars and us kids just hung out. Ernies was a great place to work as a kid. I remembering helping Hank behind the bar cleaning glasses to keep up having enough to serve. My Mom ran Jerry and Gary's greasy spoon down the road. The truckers would always stop in. Biscuits and Gravy was very popular back then. I hope to visit the area this summer and will for sure drop in. read more

The tenderloin was big enough to feed 3 people! The flavor was definitely home style. I'm picky about coating being too thick or too 'processed' tasting. No problem here. The service for take out is superb, a separate door to be sure you get service quickly. This ensures hot fries stay hot! The server was so kind as to help me to the car so I didn't drop anything while using my walker. It was a clean area with room to do what's necessary. I recommend calling ahead if you need assistance due to disability. They are accommodating whenever possible! read more

Decided to go local in ordering takeout tonight. The selection seemed reasonable for a bar and lounge. Was quite surprised when I received my order. The service was prompt. The food was perfectly cooked and the portions were better than expected. The tenderloin my husband ordered could barely fit the packaging. The grilled cheese sandwich and the philly cheese steak were also awesome.Oh so reasonable for the price especially in this day and age of big price and smaller portions. read more

Nothing thing fancy here but pretty good food, reasonably priced and the servers are friendly. Good specials every day. My favorite are the chicken strips. Taco Thursday is good value with tacos under $1.25 each and the $2.50 margaritas are way better than you might expect. read more

Moved away from Independence to west of Wichita, I will miss this place, great ruebens and chicken fried steak and ice cold beer.

Ernie's chicken fried steak (CFS to me) dinner at Kross Lounge and Restaurant in Sugar Creek, MO, is the best I've had since we left Western Kansas in the 1970s! I get it to go, with mashed potatoes, brown gravy, corn, and garlic toast. That steak is so big it hangs out over both sides of the carry-out box! The servings are so big that I get a full two meals out of it! After tasting how good the CFS is, and hearing the reputation of their pork tenderloin, I had to try it, too, with the cream gravy and my regular sides. Ernie's definitely earned their reputation! It's fantastic!! Again, the meat hangs out on both sides of the box and provides me with two meals. I told my husband that I wish we could move from our home just a mile or so north of Centerpoint Medical Center in Independence to Sugar Creek so we could be closer to my new favorite restaurant and eat their food a lot more often! I've never really liked cream gravy, but Ernie's cream gravy converted me into a cream gravy lover! I go into the restaurant planning to try the half-pound burgers, pork chop, swai, or chicken, but so far, every time I open my mouth an order for CFS or tenderloin comes out! For what it is it does what it does awesome. Good home style food. Tenderloin best I have had in the area. Better than the Courthouse exchange on the independence square. Probably it's closest competitor. Two of us got two plus meals out of it. Everything we had was good. Can order out for convenience and pick it up. The hours are kinda weird now for dine in. Call to make sure they are open. We did not like sitting in the bar as it is smoking and the dining area wasn't open. Next time if it isn't we will just order to go. read more

We came out here with friends who live in Independence otherwise, we would probably have never known about this place. I'm glad we did. I had a chicken fried steak dinner and it was excellent. Just what I would expect from a classic lower Midwest diner. Great service, casual and comfortable atmosphere, in a small town not too far from larger populations centers although it is a bit of a drive for us from where we live. Still, it was a great experience with ample portions and a great price. I would definitely come back here again. A lot of the folks still call this place Ernie's. read more

Went for lunch tosay with the hubby. I had the Cowboy chicken with greenbeans and tator salad for sides. Hubby had the Philly cheese steak sandwich anf fries. Also ordered the combo sampler with fried portabella mushroom strips and broccoli cheese puffs. Appetizers we awesome but that luch was AMAZING! CHICKEN WAS SO MOIST. Hubby said his samdwich was really good loved the peppers in it. Service was on point as well. Prices are really good. Portions ate good size to. They have good good but I hate that it allows smoking inside so I can barley be in there longer than 15-20 minutes before I get a headache. I know it's a bar so most people would disagree with me. I would just get food to go next time. read more

My wife and I are very much taco people and we have tried allot of them. This places tacos fall somewhere towards the bottom of the list. Definitely worth getting them on a Thursday when they are a dollar. We ordered an even 30 and I would say half of them were half stuffed. The meat is good but the sauce is bland and runny. There are other places more worthy of our Thursdays. One real bonus was their $3 pitchers of Miller High Life. Not my preferred beer but it will do. Bar staff is very friendly and accommodating. As far as the bar itself I dig it. The collection of beer signs is top notch and lots of big TVs for sports. Until 10pm kids are welcome. They have a small gaming area and 2 pool tables. A major plus for us. All in all I say it's an OK place. Really be interested in trying something other then tacos. read more

Kross' is legendary in Sugar Creek for it's divey atmosphere, fantastic food, and cold drinks. It's been a fixture in my family since the early years and it is often referenced by its old name, Ernie's. It had been a while since my last visit, but the game hasn't changed. Tenderloins and chicken fried steak are off the chart. Green beans, fries, and other sides are on point. Drinks are cold and service is saucy. Everything you'd be looking for in a dive bar. There are also a couple pool tables off the bar area for entertainment purposes. Smoking is still permitted here, if you're into that. Sugar Creek is still a small town atmosphere and the regulars here know most everyone. If my mom wasn't from Sugar Creek and I didn't have Creker companions with me, I probably wouldn't even consider a visit here. It shouldn't deter you from enjoying some greasy goodness but just be aware that it's still an institution that has its own pecking order. Will be back soon enough. It's a favorite when I get over that way. read more

Oh man, this place....this place. It's a dive. Nay, it's a dive and a half. It's...awesome. I was here with a very large group that pretty much overwhelmed the place, but every staff member was super friendly, super helpful. The kitchen was likely slammed, but handled it perfectly because a lot of people ordered food. And said food was...unhealthy. And delicious. Soooo much fried food, and sooo much deliciousness. I had the livers and gizzards which were huge and tasty. My wife's pork tenderloin sandwich was good as well. Lots of people ordered chicken fried steak, the size of a plate, and it looked great (and I don't even like chicken fried steak, but I want to go back and order it). Drink wise, happy hour is 3-6pm every day except Sunday. I had a mix of beers and well drinks, and the well drinks were poured strongly by the fantastic bartenders. I love this place. Holy smokes....yeah the ambiance is 70-80's...so what, the people who work here are absolutely great This restaurant is a no frills, no loud music kind of place I am a chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes kind of guy I mean I really love it, but I was shocked when they brought it..that damn thing was ginormous, go big or go home and I am taking a lot home, and let me add that it is better than any other place in Kansas City that I have been too. If you don't like hole in the wall kind of places that are quiet stay away, but if you want a quiet place to talk with good food at a more than fair price this is the place for you read more

Love this place! Fried portabella strips are awesome, nice thin and crispy breading. Reuben was stacked with tons of meat. Burgers are 1/2 lb and meat is seasoned perfectly. MON is $5 burger night. Fish and chips, breading was crisp and not greasy at all! Buffalo chips I am getting EVERY TIME now! Thinly sliced and fried potato with a slightly spicy seasoning. Employees are very nice and attentive. Pitchers of PBR are $5.50.. You really can't go wrong here! Smoking is still allowed in the bar side, separate from the restaurant. read more

What a TREAT! Just having returned from my first visit, I feel compelled to post a recommendation to anyone near, or passing through Sugar Creek, it's a must stop. I was with 2 friends. I ordered the boneless pork chop. Tender, juicy, delicious, smothered with bacon, BBQ sauce and melted cheese. No truck stop can come close. My friends were equally impressed with the chicken fried steak and the chicken tenders dinners. We learned that Ernie's is locally owned and operated. The staff are awesome, totally focused on communicating their pride in the food, restaurant, and community. Nothing gourmet could touch the food. The entertainment factor is at least 15 on a scale of 10! It's worth going out of your way to experience Ernie's in Sugar Creek. read more

It's worth the trip to give this place a try. This is old school. Has the smell of 40+ years of Marlboro smoke but wasn't actually smokey in there. Bill and Glenn were fired up at the bar so they must have decent ventilation. Went on Friday and they have a tenderloin special. Not sure if it's the best in KC but it very good and huge. Service is great. So if you aren't worried about your diet give it a shot. Leave your skinny jeans at home! read more

A Sugar Creek "sweet spot!" Been eating here for over 23 year's and it never gets old or boring. There's so much variety on the menu and then there's the daily specials that sell out often. Friendly staff. Varied menu. You can always count on a good comfort-food style family meal with good portions and fair prices. Ernie's has a small town personality with friendly staff and a welcoming atmosphere. The restaurant is now smoke-free which now allows me to bring more non-smoking friends to lunch/Dinner. Found this place while cruizen' thru yelp. A tenderloin served over tater tots? My kind of a place!! So the hippie dippie chick and I filled the car with gas and headed cross city to check.out this place known for its tenderloin. When we got there we saw everyone had onion rings. Well not being an individual who can't be subject to influence we ordered them also. Fresh is a good definition. Mighty hot and mighty tasty. Orders were quickly prepared. I HAD the tenderloin and unfortunately they were out of tater tots. But the mashed potatoes were very good. Toooooooo much food for 1 meal. The tenderloin musta came from a T-Rex because it was Flintstone big. The Hippie Dippie Chick had the 1/2 lbs boiled shrimp with fries, the special. Classic. According to their sign been here since the 40's. This is an old fashioned bar, brick walls, long bar, casual atmosphere, and bar signs/decor with Schlitz and falstaff. Good beer, drinks and a great menu...there is also a restaurant side but not as much fun! Ernie's has been a sugar creek institution for generations. TENDERLOIN!!! Personally I can vouch for their tenderloin for over 30 years! Name change scared me first time but went in for my tenderloins and it was still great! Pool tables, pacman, pinball, new age jukebox, reasonable prices, beer specials, great food... Ate here the other night cause someone said"tenderloin". .. still putting out the best in the greater kc area...they call it colossal and it is, but it is thick too, not pounded thin like many are...you taste fried deliciousness but you taste the meat too. I've never been able to eat the whole thing! They have a large menu, lots of fried stuff that goes so well with beer, but comfort food too...mashed potatoes daily specials etc. Honestly though it's hard to go and not get that tenderloin!
