This review is for delivery only. We placed a delivery order through Grubhub and it took less than 30 minutes to arrive at our apartment building in the Navy Yard area, awesome! We ordered papaya salad, chicken pad see yew, kruba eggplant, and duck pad prik king. All of them were tasty and well above average compared to other Thai places in DC. The Kruba eggplant was especially tasty! The papaya salad was a little disappointing because they added random romaine lettuce, which took up half of the take out container, so the portion size was smaller than expected. I had an office lunch at Kruba so for a party of 10 they put 5 tables of 2 together in a single line. The place was pretty quiet for 1130am. We were promptly seated and given water. The waiter remembered what all of us ordered w/o a notepad (which I was impressed with), but I think all of us ordered a lunch special for $11.95. Yes, it shouldn't be called a special when it's over $10, but what did the lunch special get me? It got me an overly salty 1/2 cup of miso soup (I didn't come to a Thai restaurant for miso soup) with 3 tiny cubes of tofu and some nori, a 3 inch piece of under-fried spring roll with a tbs of dipping sauce and a huge plate (the plate was huge not the meal) of drunken noodles. The plate of food was pretty, I mean 14 of my plate was some carrot shavings. I honestly have to say the drunken noodles was pretty good, the chef tends to go heavy with the salt, and I had to drink about 2 glasses of water to quench my thirst. However, ordering for 10 was relatively easy and quick. Would I come back here again? Maybe once in a blue moon if I want to spend $15 total for a lunch special. read more

Came here for lunch with some co-workers about 2 weeks ago. It was pretty empty, which was to be expected, but had good service. Ordered the lunch special drunken noodles, which also came with miso soup and an egg roll. Everything was rather good, but I thought the portions were a little small, especially for thai food. It certainly seems like the owners here know that there isn't much around food wise, and can charge whatever they want. I had a hankering for drunken noodles and stopped by this place, which was nearly empty on a Saturday afternoon. I ordered and food came out surprisingly quick. My party waited close to an hour for our food, despite the fact that the place was maybe one-eighth full and staff were standing around. I was GLAD that I finally tried this restaurant! I was never sure because it usually looked empty and that kept me away. However, today I had some of the best fresh rolls with the rice paper wrap being very thin and the salad greens very fresh. Also, extra points for a good peanut dipping sauce. I can only speak to the sushi, but it was great. Fresh fish and fast service. The miso soup was actually hearty and not watered down like some places. The waiters were very attentive and food and drinks came out promptly. It was around 7:15 when we went and it was hardly crowded at all. 5 stars for the food. 1 star for the service and value. The servers are inconsistent and mostly unaccomodating (for example, sometimes they allow you to say "hold the fish sauce" in the curries, other times they say they don't do that. Sometimes they allow you to omit tomatoes from drunken noodles and sub broccoli, other times they refuse, other times they oblige and charge you another $3). If you go here and order Chinese-take out style (just pick a number and shut up), you'll get enough food to fill you up, but much less than other comparable restaurants who also charge a couple dollars less. But since the food is better quality, I'm okay with that. Same goes for the sushi-- it is more drastically overpriced than most places ($6 for a small veggie roll? really?) but it tastes fresher and I think Kruba knows they don't have any other sushi competition in the immediate area (for those walking to lunch during work hours). I'll continue to go here but not as frequently as I would if the service was better and/or prices were slightly lower. read more

Ordered pork green curry and chicken Panang curry along with two sushi rolls which totaled around $65 on grubhub. The meats were switched and the sushi was delivered in the same bag on top of the hot curry on an 80 degree day. The sushi came hot. When I called they said in order to give me a refund they had to come pick up the food they gave me which I did not agree to because I waited an hour and had nothing else to eat. On top of everything they have not closed by grubhub order so I can't review them on there or file a complaint. Good things there's yelp! Another local who won't be going there anymore. read more

As a resident of Navy Yard, I thought it was wonderful that I now had a Thai dinner option that did not mean driving to Arlington or Barracks Row/Penn Ave. However, I was sorely disappointed by Kruba for the following reasons: (1) Price - This place is waaaayyy over market price for the food it offers for dinner. I mean, it's not even close. Green curry chicken was $15.95 at Kruba. It is typically $10-13 other Thai restaurants throughout the DMV. Same was true for our sushi, spring rolls, and drinks. Overall, you will end up paying 25-50% more here than any other place you go. (2) Small Portions - The portions are not tiny, but they are small. I had the spring rolls and the green curry for dinner and was still hungry enough after to stop by Safeway afterward. My girlfriend's sushi was smaller than typical sushi so she also ended up ordering twice as much. (3) Average Quality - The veggies were fresh and the sauce was good, but my meat was not fresh. The chicken tasted old and freezer-burned. The quality just was not good. (4) Up Charges Galore - Beware of the upcharges! I literally had a table spoon of white rice with my green curry. When I asked for more, they brought more and I was happy. However, when I got the bill, I noticed $2.50 up charge for rice. When I asked the waitress, she said it was "policy." Would not budge on waiving the charge. (5) Service - The service was not terrible, but I expect more from a Thai restaurant. The server probably came around 2-3 times during the evening. This is probably half as much as I would expect. Overall, I will be driving out to Arlington for my Thai food in the future in order to get twice as much food for half the price. Nobody goes here for dinner during the week and for good reason. You should avoid. read more

Decor: I think it's a really nice place to sit down and eat with the wood decor, especially at night since it is mostly candlelight. And for now, it is still pretty quiet. Service: excellent service, always had refilled drinks, etc. Food takes a bit to be ready sometimes but not so long that it is a problem for me. Food: Delicious! The panang, pad thai and sushi are great. I especially like the spicy tuna tempura roll. Price: A little on the pricey side but nothing too bad considering it is a nice place to sit down and eat. The lunch special here is great! My team and I went today, and for about $12, you get a spring roll, miso soup, and a main dish. I ordered the basil fried rice with chili sauce and chicken and it was very good, just spicy enough, but a little dry. One of my coworkers had the drunken chicken and that was delicious! Wow it's rare I'm disappointed with Thai food but Kruba did it! First their online menu does not show their vegetarian menu so I wasn't sure if they even have one. I got the Panang Tofu with Veggies whose sauce was very flavorful and they gave me a generous portion of rice. However the tofu was horrible! Thai restaurants know how to make tofu, it's fried and chewy, here it was raw - not good at all. You know what else was raw - the whole mushrooms in my dish. They cooked all the other vegetables except the mushrooms, was someone not paying attention in the kitchen? I thought the price point here was a bit high. They have good happy hour specials but the one bartender was super slow. read more

A touch pricey for the regular thai dishes, but I can't argue with the taste. They also used to have an eggplant dish that was one of my favorites that dropped on and off the menu. Both the thai and the sushi are very well done, the thai having good strong flavors with a good presentation. Everything that's been said about the atrocious customer service at this restaurant is true. We showed up at 5.30 pm and found the restaurant completely empty except one table that was occupied. After keeping us waiting at the door for a long while, one woman with a hostile attitude demanded to know if we had a reservation which we didn't. She then barked at us that we could only get a table for 60 minutes because we did not have a reservation. I asked her what we were expected to do if we had not finished eating in 60 minutes. She pointed to the phone in front of her and told us that in order to be seated for 90 minutes we need to call to reserve a table in advance. It was absurd that she actually told us to call her while we were standing in front of her. There was no reason to insist on a reservation when the place was totally empty and we we there much ahead of regular dinner hours. This type of mean spirited behavior by servers who are venting their frustrations on customers is completely unacceptable. And driving customers away from empty restaurants just to prove a point is plain stupid. I don't think they will stay in business very long. Their staff seem to want to make sure it shuts down very soon. Boycott this restaurant until they are driven out of business for good. read more

Unable to take correct orders. People taking the order speak very limited English which made the process of ordering about 10 minutes longer than it should have been. I asked 3 different times for a side of white rice and to my suprise when the order came, no white rice. I called back asking for either a credit or for them to bring the rice. "No, can't do that", was the only response I got. No sorry, or anything. Food was fine but I do primarily take-out and the inability to take an order correctly, or efficiently, will stop me from ordering from there again. Hire one person to answer the phones that is able to speak English so orders do not get screwed up. A crash course in customer service wouldn't hurt them either. read more

Not coming back. Been here twice now and the service was the same as before. We came with a large group and they only gave us 4 menus. Had to ask for more and the hostess had an attitude about having to give us more menus. I spilled a glass of water and needed more napkins. The a waiter who watched the whole thing didn't budge to get us more napkins. I had to ask for more and he goes to the sushi bar and starts to talk to them upfront then starts setting another table. We didn't have enough utensils and asked for more but they never brought them. Had to snatch the from other tables. We had 4 families and asked the bill to be split Among the families and the look of confusion made me say forget it. But he managed to get it right. He never went around the table to ask for our drinks. He food was good but the service was horrible. There are much better Thai restaurants in the area. Try Baan Thai, authentic. read more

A colleague of mine recommended this place for lunch because it is in close proximity to our office. I have an egg allergy and they were able to make pad Thai without egg, which was great. The portion sizes for lunch are large. The soup and spring rolls are also very good. It was a little pricey for lunch but I will go there again. read more

I have eaten here are a number of times and have never had a bad experience, the sushi is very good as well as the pad Thai and the pineapple fried rice. As someone who lives in the neighborhood and has been a loyal customer of Kruba for almost 2 years because of its proximity I know this place well and will give you my honest opinion. First off, the food here is good. Most of the staff here are decent but the service is terrible overall. Also, they have a happy hour menu but never offer it to patrons which baffles me. People in DC live for happy hour and a place like Kruba with a higher than normal price point for Thai restaurants in the area should be marketing this like crazy to get more people in the door. This place is always dead and I think the word has spread that it is expensive, has poor customer service, and doesn't have happy hour. I'd be stunned if this place were to be open a year from now which is sad because we are all excited about its grand opening (which was a soft opening) but it has disappointed with its service and no happy hour (at least not one most people are aware of). read more

A friend and I went here for dinner. We had never been so we decided to give it a try. We sat out on the patio which was nice but kind of dark as there was no real lighting out there. We ordered the Shrimp Drunken noodles and 4 different kinds of sushi. My friend also ordered a Manhattan. The food came out in a timely manner and was delicious. There did seem to be some confusion on how to make a Manhattan though so they brought my friend the wrong drink. He drank it nonetheless. They offer both daily lunch special menu and sushi menu. Menu come with fancy fusion type of sushi, but I was surprise that they taste better than I expected. The daily lunch special is about $13, which depending on your order. However, the portion toward small. I was not hunger, but the curry was so tasty that I want more rice ; ) It is a good place for lunch or lunch dating. The price are little more than average lunch price. My review is for delivery from Kruba. We usually order from them once a month (at least 20x total) but we've never dined there. I give the food 4.5 stars for quality and taste but I have to deduct a half star for portion size and price. The portions are pretty small (definitely have to order one item per person) and the prices are on the higher side. (We usually order 3 things for the two of us and it almost always comes to $50.) Here are the things we normally order: - Green Curry (usually with veggies/tofu but I've also gotten it with chicken) 5 STARS!! I LOVE their green curry. It's one of the better ones I've had. Every time I order green curry from other restaurants, I'm reminded how clean and delicious Kruba's is. I think it's because they use fresh bamboo shoots instead of the ones from the can. Usually the ones from the can will make the dish smell like sour pork. Also it's not overly oily which can also be a problem with green curry. - Pad Thai (w/chicken) 3 STARS We tried this when they first opened and never ordered it again because it was pretty tasteless and disappointing. Back then I would have given it a 2 but I am giving it a 3 because I suspect it's improved since then. - Drunken Noodle (w/chicken) 4 STARS We order this every time and it's pretty delicious. They make it with a good quality white chicken breast and it always has a good meat/veggie/flavor ratio. I would give it 5 stars if the portion was just a little bigger. I am a small Asian girl who likes to share my entree family style when I order but it's a little harder to do with Kruba. Most of the time rice and noodle dishes usually run bigger because carbs usually cost less but at Kruba's, as far as I can tell, protein dishes are the same size as noodle/rice dishes. - Pineapple Fried Rice (w chicken) 5 STARS They make a delicious fried rice and yes it does come in half a pineapple. - Sushi Rolls 3-4 STARS (depending on what you order) We usually order the california roll and the spicy tuna. We've tried a lot of the other rolls and they are good but since this is a Thai place, please keep in mind that sushi is not their specialty. We've gotten a couple of other dishes from there and they were also good (papaya salad, tofu puffs, goong garlic, pad gra prao). They have never messed up our order but they have forgotten condiments before. Many times I've asked them for the tiny pickled peppers in vinegar but I don't think they carry it because they usually send fresh chopped jalapeños or crushed red peppers. read more

I had a reception here for 70+ people, and it went great! The Thai food was delicious - we had 4 entrees and an appetizer, served buffet style. The servers were attentive, polite and provided fast service. Ken was so helpful in planning and also kept things going smooth during the event. I wouldn't hesitate to come back here for a meal, or to host another event here! All of my guests enjoyed themselves.
