The decor of this restaurant is beautiful, especially the washrooms. The washbasin designed from a piece of wood is a nice touch. I've experienced this place a couple of times. The food is pretty good. I thoroughly enjoyed the Pad Thai the first time; however, the Ginger Chicken dish I had the second time was just okay. I sampled my lunch companion's meal, which was chicken and cashews. I loved it. He didn't. Just goes to show that there is a variable in appreciation for food. I did not like the Arnold Palmer I ordered with a meal. I believe it was made with Thai iced tea (which should come as no surprise). The flavor wasn't tasty. Oh yeah, their prices are a bit high for the portion. All in all, I have decided that I will be back. For me, it's worth coming to the picturesque area and stopping in to have one of my favorite types of cuisine. I know of at least two dishes that I love. Kruba is excellent. We got very fast service in the beautiful but nearly empty space (neighbors, lets fix that ASAP). We have also had takeout. Both my curries (Penang and green) were great -- good balance of flavors especially with the Penang that can easily get too sweet. My husband had pad thai and pad prig king and enjoyed both. Also, they are now serving beer and wine and the sushi bar is open -- next on my list to try! Update: food is still quite good, though portions are a bit small for the price. I live in the Yards area, where the dining options are pretty limited (but getting much better every month!). The first time my boyfriend and I went here, it was based mostly on convenience (and excitement over the fact that we now had another option besides Justin's); we weren't necessarily expecting it to be one of the best sushi places in the city. Needless to say (based on the 5 stars), Kruba exceeded our expectations! We now get delivery from Kruba about once a week, usually sushi. Every roll that we've ever had has been delicious and fresh. The spicy tuna -- which is, in my opinion, always the standard to judge sushi places by -- is awesome. Our favorite special rolls are the executive and toasted salmon. Every Thai dish that we've gotten has been awesome as well. We especially love the tod mun goong. In addition to the food, there are two MAJOR bonuses. First, the restaurant is absolutely gorgeous -- it's entirely done in beautiful teak wood. Second, the delivery is lightening fast. When we order, they always tell us it will be about a half hour. It's usually more like 15. I am a little concerned with how empty it usually is. I hope it's more of an indication that people order tons of delivery, and not that the restaurant just isn't doing well. I have been here a handful of times now. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. The Thai food is decently priced, and even more so once you realize that the portions are rather large and excellent for sharing. I have personally never tried the alcohol here, but my friend says they have excellent cocktails. In terms of quality of food it is as authentic if not more so than most DC Thai food. I am generally not a Pad Thai fan, but I really enjoyed it here. Also, they have a Crispy Duck dish that is excellent, although I recommend asking for the sauce on the side or else you might find your dish drowning in it. My wife is not a fan of their Drunken Noodle, however. I would say they rival Bangkok 54 if you are familiar with that restaurant. It's easy to pass this place up since it always looks empty. There has never been more than 1 or 2 parties dining at the same time as my visit. But don't let appearances fool you - this is one of the better restaurants that has moved into the Navy Yard area. Edit: After reading other posts complaining about price, I wanted to clarify that me, my wife, and my son share 2 entrees. This is our neighborhood Thai place. It's pretty standard Thai food and checks off all the boxes if you're looking for pad Thai, Panama, etc. It seems like they do a lot more takeout business than dine-in - so it's pretty easy to get a seat almost anytime. They also have a large out door seating area which is nice in the warmer months. I always order the same thing and every time I've ordered lately my food has been thrown together and nothing like what it used to be. I'm a pretty big foodie, and I literally made a Yelp account just to write this warning. This is probably the worst restaurant experience I can remember. While that sounds dramatic, consider: My husband and two of our friends were in the area looking for a place to eat. It was mid-afternoon on a gorgeous day, and many nearby restaurants were packed (which, in hindsight, should have been a sign that everyone was ELSEWHERE), and Kruba's patio looked nearly empty. We walked in and asked to be seated outside. The woman at the host desk rudely told me, "You can't sit outside. We're very busy and we won't be able to serve you outside." It was about 3:00pm, there were 3 tables taken on the patio of at least 40 tables. Literally it was a completely beautiful day -- why on earth would you tell patrons they can't enjoy the best thing they have to offer. So we begrudgingly and confusedly (not sure if that's a word) walked past the only 4-5 tables filled inside, sat at the bar. We waited for 15 minutes without seeing a bartender or ANY server to take our order. We'd planned on ordering cocktails, but without any service, we changed our minds. Finally, because I was starving, I turned around and asked a server (who still wouldn't make eye contact with me) if she could take our order. She said no. After EVENTUALLY tracking someone down to order some sushi from, I asked for tamari on the side instead of soy sauce since I cannot eat wheat. She did not know what that was. I told her it's gluten-free soy sauce (this is a sushi restaurant and this is something people commonly ask for?). All we ordered was sushi, and we eventually were the ONLY people in the restaurant, and it took 20-25 minutes. When it came out -- wait for it -- they forgot to bring the vegetable rolls I ordered, they forgot to bring my friend's entree salad (which was the ONLY thing she ordered), and they forgot to bring any gluten-free soy sauce. I didn't even bother to inquire about the vegetable rolls, since I was beyond annoyed and would have preferred at this point to just get the heck out of there. When the bill finally came, my friend's entree salad was on the bill even though it never arrived! She had to ask to have it taken off, and once again, no one apologized. I was so fed up that I wanted to speak to a manager as we left, but in an enormously surprising turn of events, I was unable to locate anyone. In addition to one problem after another, the staff were completely disinterested, rude, and unapologetic. They literally could not have cared less. I am shockedddd that this restaurant is still in business in such a vibrant and thriving neighborhood. Maybe their takeout game is strong, but it is evident from their lack of clients that it will not be around much longer. Please dear God do not go here, even if you're from out of town or just looking for an uncrowded stop in an otherwise busy area. As a former restaurant server and someone who understands how challenging the food service business can be, this is still just unacceptable. I came here with a friend on a whim and decided to eat outside, as the the sun was setting. It turns out they don't have any lights for their outdoor seating, so as it got darker it started to feel pretty weird. This could be easily fixed with some sort of candles on the outdoor tables, but if I go back at a similar time, I'll eat inside. The service was alright, but kind of weird. We had several different people serving us, and then it was difficult to get anyone to acknowledge us when trying to get the check. That was especially weird, because before that, it seemed like they were pushing us out, telling us when last call was. Plus, I'm pretty sure we were the only people still at the restaurant. The food was good, but nothing special. We got a sushi roll and Pad Thai (one with chicken and one with tofu and vegetables). We both questioned how much chicken and tofu were in the fried pieces we ate, which seemed to be mostly filled with air, but I liked the overall flavor and that they served the peanuts on the side. My girlfriend and I were in DC for the weekend and were wandering around the yard searching in vain for a restaurant without a 2+hr wait, and we took a leap of faith on Kruba's mostly-empty dining room. We couldn't have made a better call. While our server's english was a bit rough, he was extremely attentive and experienced. We started with a bottle of Chardonnay, crab and salmon maki rolls. Everything was very reasonably priced and delicious. The real treat was the drunken noodles. Wide egg noodles stir fried with a brilliant, complex spicy sauce that set fire to our bellies. First thing I noticed about this place when we walked in on a Wednesday night at 8pm, was that it was nearly empty. I almost felt bad for the wait staff and host who seemed embarrassed that nobody was there. The Nats game had let out just two hours before, where was everyone? My husband and I ate at this restaurant for lunch. We gave it two stars because the wait staff was very friendly and the food tasted okay. However, we will NOT go back to this restaurant for several reasons. But our main reason for not coming back is that there was absurd amount of mosquitos inside the restaurant. Both my husband and I had mosquito bites on our ankles and legs during our lunch. We had mosquitos land in our food. It was disgusting. We immediately asked for our check and left. We noticed a few tables down that another couple were experiencing the same unpleasantness (mosquito biting). They started covering their ankles with a sweater. Dear Kruba, I'm staging an intervention. I'm really concerned that you aren't doing enough business. I am fearful that DC might lose one of the best Thai restaurants it has. I've now tried quite a few DC Thai joints within city limits and I firmly believe you are the best of the bunch. However, there are some truths you need to hear. First, your windows are so tinted that people don't realize you are even open. Both of your open signs hanging on the front door are just not catching people's eye. Second, your front door is so heavy that only athletes training for the American Warrior Ninja can open it. I saw a couple specifically try to eat at your restaurant but walked away because they couldn't open the door and thought you were closed. Lastly, you have premium patio real estate and yet it never gets used. DC residents like their patio day drinking more than in most cities. If only you added a little flare to your patio situation (ie music, tiki bar, or even plush patio furniture) and advertised a killer happy hour, I just know you'd have more patrons then you'd know what to do with them. I'm shocked to see people complain about either the food or the service at Kruba. From my experience, both are excellent. I moved to Navy Yard a couple months ago and have been to Kruba twice. I think people's experiences not getting water must be a fluke. Having a waiter who doesn't replenish my water is one of my worst pet peeves, but both times I found the wait staff at Kruba to be very attentive. The food is also excellent. I love Thai food, but a common problem I have is that I think many restaurants neglect fresh ingredients. The vegetables in the dishes are often a little suspect. Not at Kruba. I'm a vegetarian, and the dishes I ordered [(1) vegetable pad thai, (2) vegetable green curry] not only had fresh vegetables, but a plentiful and nice variety. I can also vouch for (3) the drunken noodles with chicken and (4) the beef red curry, as my dining companions raved over their dishes! Seriously, go to Kruba. Absolutely horrible service. A few of us went here for lunch on a weekday. It wasn't crowded. I'd say it was about 20% full. We ordered the lunch specials and got our soup and spring rolls in about 10 minutes. We then waited 20 minutes until we saw our server. When we asked about our food, he said "5 minutes." He also apologized and said that a group of 30 people came in right before us. There weren't more than 15 customers in the entire restaurant, so we didn't really know what he was talking about. Ten minutes later, we were going to walk out but they brought one person's food out so we stayed. Ten minutes later (50 minutes since we arrived) we told the server that we need to get back to work. He said the food was almost ready. We told him we didn't want it anymore. He said he could make it to go, so again we waited. Ten minutes later it came out--on plates. We explained that we wanted it to go and so he went back and packaged it. Here's the best part. He then handed us the bill for $72! We explained that after wait fo more than an hour, we assumed it was going to be comped. He asked what we wanted. We said that traditionally when you get horrible service you get your meal for free. We asked for a manager, he said he's not here, but he called him and he said to take off 10%. Obviously he was lying about calling the manager. Also, I'm pretty sure there was a manager there but he just didn't want to come out. When we explained that this was not how you treat your customers, he told us that the manager and owner don't care. He then watched us like a hawk as we filled out the tip line. Obviously, we didn't leave a tip. If all of this wasn't bad already, we never were asked if we wanted drink refills and our waters weren't refilled once in 70 minutes. We've been to Kruba Thai three times now, and we most likely won't go again. This review is mostly for the management (and also the drinks). The food is good, but not overwhelmingly good in either the sushi or thai departments. We've had much better drunken noodles for much better prices, and the sushi is good but not overwhelmingly great for the prices. First, the drinks. My first two trips here I tried cocktails. I had to send both back, because they were insanely sweet. The last was a mojito, which is a fairly simple drink. It tasted like pure sugar. I couldn't even taste the mint in it. The last trip I opted for Sapporo beer, which was the highlight of the evening. We've always had good service from the waiters and waitresses, so this review does not apply to them. We live in the Navy Yard area and are members of Vida Fitness, which comes with a "Preferred Partners" card which gives discounts to area restaurants. The updated list of restaurants appears on the Vida page, and we check this frequently as we do enjoy going out to dinner and lunch on the weekends. Tonight we felt like sushi and since Kruba Thai is listed as giving Vida members 10% off, we headed over there. Again, the food was good, but not stellar. We got edamame (hard to mess that up), miso soup, and three rolls. The only roll I didn't like was the yellowtail and scallion roll - it had a cleaning product type of aftertaste. But the eel and avocado and "Executive" roll were tasty. We get our check and present our waitress with our Vida card. She runs over to the manager, who says they don't accept it. We quickly check the website and it still lists Kruba as a Preferred Partner. My husband decides to show the website to the manager, as it is one of the draws in us going there over other thai/sushi places with better food and better prices. The manager has an attitude, and says that he has told Vida to take them off the list because they no longer accept it, and that there is no discount. First of all, I understand that it must be frustrating for him as a business owner to have his restaurant's name still on the Vida website. However, that is not the fault of the patrons of his business. The good and appropriate thing to do would have been to explain to us that in the future they are not going to be a Preferred Partner, but since they are still listed on Vida's website advertising 10% off, he would honor it. But he did not - he was dismissive and rude. We didn't press the issue or argue with him because we didn't want to make a scene, but it is the last time we will go there. There are other great local businesses (including thai and sushi places) that are respectful and friendly to their patrons. I've been to Kruba three times and on every trip the place was maybe a quarter full. They really should work on their customer service if they want to maintain a steady flow of patrons. read more

We live in the neighborhood and have been waiting to try Kruba for a while, and finally made it there the other night. The food was EXCELLENT and the cocktails were pretty good, too. We decided that we would over order and take some leftovers home, but that definitely did not happen for two reasons: the food was DElicious and the portion sizes are quite small. Or maybe they aren't "small", but they definitely are not large/normal sized portions. But again, that is alright because it was SO good!! We started off with Kanom Jeeb (aka dumplings lol) that the waitress recommended and also the spring rolls. The spring rolls were teeny and just tasted like average spring rolls, but the dumplings were excellent. Both were definitely pre-made, but that doesn't bother me. And then my fiance and I also split the spicy tuna tempura roll, which was awesome, but we both could have easily eaten an order for ourselves. And then for the main dishes, I got pork pad see ew and my fiance ordered a spicier noodles dish, but the name escapes me. Both excellent!! Anyway, the service was also great and we will definitely be returning!! The only thing that will REALLY help their business (I have walked by a million times and it has never been crowded) is to start Happy Hour specials!!!! I asked the waitress about specials and she said that they're coming soon, so let's cross our fingers!! They will do awesome once HH begins and as competition begins in our neighborhood, they will really need the traffic. read more

I would suggest that they update/enlarge/make brighter their outdoor signage so that people can find them more easily! I had the chicken and ginger dish (can't remember the exact name). Very good. The entrees are HUGE!!!!! Literally, a ton of food! We also tried a "mushroom puff" ... it was strange and was more like an "empanada" than any sort of "puff." Kruba is typically a great place to order food from for delivery as well as sit in when in Yards Park. I order food so frequently from Kruba that I don't even bother to check in and write a review. However tonight takes the cake for terrible terrible service - and it pains me to pen this review. After ordering food, confirming my order, and being told that delivery would take 30 min I started to get concerned after over an hour with no calls or delivery. I decided to call and check in to see what was happening with the order. When I called in and provided my phone number I was promptly told that it was great I had called back in because they had lost my order due to a computer crashing and no record of my original call and order and no idea what my phone number was. How is this possible that they could instantly identify that I had previously called to place an order but lost the order and still recognize that my number was attributed to the lost order? The whole thing is extremely suspect and reeks of poor service. I have spent hundreds of dollars at Kruba and am extremely not happy with the service today. To the restaurants credit they offers to make my order and deliver it as soon as possible and provide a slight discount - but honestly speaking, what else would they do? Refuse to make the food that I had originally ordered?! What adds insult to injury is that after reconfirming my order, the restaurant still managed to prepare and deliver the wrong order. I mean really? How poorly managed must the restaurant now be for this to occur? This is not rocket science: a customer politely requests and order, received confirmation - word for word - of that order, then waits over 2x the related wait time to receive the wrong food. This is what drives customers away and spurs them to publicly post regarding the ineptitude of management and restaurant staff. Inexcusable. I will seriously reconsider ordering from here again when Barracks Row is only a few more blocks away. Updated 2/28 I'm not sure where to start with my last experience. After placing a $60+ sushi order on the restaurant website and receiving a confirmation email for delivery I decided to call Kruba after over an hour had passed with no call, text, or email. I called three times and each time the call went to voicemail. When I called back, someone answered and then promptly hung up the phone without saying a word. After calling back two more times I was finally able to speak with someone named "Ken". I was told that they had no record of my order. When I politely said that I had ordered on the restaurant website, had a confirmation email, and that my credit card had already been charged (I checked online) I was told "sorry". After being put on a short hold, "Ken" came back to the line and said that my order was found and that it would be delivered in 5 minutes, he promptly hung up the phone on me - I could not even get one word in. It turns out that he was correct, the food was delivered shortly thereafter; the delivery person said one word "sorry", and didn't speak a single word the entire time I interacted with him. To top off this terrible experience, the restaurant delivered the wrong food! How does this happen? $60+ of shush I ordered online with a crystal clear order summary of what was ordered and the restaurant got the order wrong. I'm not certain how someone running the front house of a restaurant speaking with a customer who ordered $60 sushi feels entitled to tell a customer "sorry" and speak down to the customer expect repeated business in this day and age. I find this unacceptable. The last two times giving my business to this restaurant I have been treated horribly and received terrible service. I am done giving this place second and third chances. Sat at the bar for 21 minutes without service before finally giving up. There were maybe 12 other people in the entire restaurant. Also, does anyone else find their prices way off?? Save your money and go to Osteria Morini or Agua 301 instead! read more
