Police Officers last week so when my group of Jersey Cousins were getting together to see our cousin play the NJPAC I suggested Krug's There is no doubt of the quality of the food but the hour wait between the app's and the burgers cost us three quarters of our ninety dollar tickets to the show. Walk-in, smell that flat top sizzlin', people throwing back some brews, jukebox playing tunes... Ahhh Krug's. If burgers aren't your thing (you're crazy lol) - try the wings, the buffalo shrimp, scampi shrimp, employee sauce on anything, cheesesteak, cheese fries, poppers, pastrami, roast beef? Come on, they've got it all. Not to mention the staff: their ability to weather the storm with 100+ people, salivating like pavlovian dogs waiting for their delicious burgers, only to find out they'll need to be patient a little longer (as the grill only holds ~20 some at a time). They're fun, they're cool and have a bit if sass (cheers Bruno, Melissa and Claudia). They're just a fun group and if you ever visit, you'll love the food. Read so much about the burgers here, so I came prior to a Devils game. Sat down, and the wait staffer immediately asked what I'd like to drink. When I said I could also place my food order, she told me to wait for a moment and she'd be back. The Guinness was there promptly. Twenty minutes later, after being ignored and watching she and the rest of the wait staff kibitzing with other customers and tables, I went to the bar and paid for my Guinness. This is probably my favorite place to grab a burger around. There is literally no other place like Krugs Tavern to get a delicious made to order burger cooked to your liking. Krugs is your typical Tavern - dark inside, a bunch of men drinking beer, and mainly a beer and shots drinking spot in general. But, this place has so much potential - always packed and they're always grilling in the kitchen. Their burger is at least a pound of meat that they roll into a ball while cooking and since the kitchen is open, you can watch the twenty other burgers they have on the grill while they smash down the ball of meat and flip it over and you watch the flames burst up from the grease. I love it. One of my coworkers loves his burger rare and he always says how Krugs is the only place around that cooks his burger exactly the way he likes it. I order medium rare and my burger is always so juicy and full of flavor. The bun is even good as a large sesame bun and they provide large pickles and hot peppers with their burgers. Their drinks are very reasonably priced and it's great to come for happy hour to get even even deals. It's quite a treat, I can promise you will not get a burger like a Krugs burger anywhere around. Best burger that I have ever had!! I'm not an easy girl to impress when it comes to food, but this blew my mind. The burger was huge, so juicy, moist, flavorful, pipping hot and ooohhh sooo good. The charcoal and cook on the burger was pure perfection. I got the California burger which consisted of mayo, lettuce, tomatoes, sauteed onions and I added peppers as well. Even the ingredients were so fresh, the bread was soft, I tried to finish that big baby up but I couldn't, I was only able to eat 3/4 of it. On the side, I shared an order of steak fries with cheese that was good as well, also a huge portion especially for sharing. You even get free pickles with peppers to start your meal off. It was interesting to watch all the food being made in front of my eyes, I felt like I was at a hibachi restaurant where I was able to see everything being prepared in front of me with no hidden secrets. The cook area is really small for the amount of food that they pump out, but kudos to them because they have been doing it successfully for years now. Con's: -I didn't like the fact that they cook the bacon next to the burgers, I don't eat pork so that was a bit of a disappointment, even if they clean the area after the bacon that would be perfectly acceptable as well but they didn't. - All the fried items were never placed in paper towels to absorb all the extra oil, such as the fries, wings, onion rings etc. Luckily, It didn't harm the taste but its a simple implement that should be used. Working in Newark, I've heard rave reviews about Krug's for years, but today was my first visit. It's just too far of a walk during the work week and parking is a nightmare anywhere in Newark during the week. So what better to do than drive into the Ironbound section of Newark on a Saturday with my son for some bonding over burgers?!? Truth be told we were also there for an event at NJPAC... We kept it simple...he had a bacon hamburger with fries and I had the bacon cheeseburger with onions and pickles and onion rings. Looking at the menu, the burgers are pricey, but they are 3/4 pound burgers so you aren't walking out of here hungry. The portion size of the fries and onion rings were WAY bigger than one Yelper complained about. In fact the reason we didn't just share a side was because one review said the portions were small. I literally took fries and onion rings home and we got two more servings each out of the leftovers. So, back to the patty of deliciousness. Do you remember the old Wendy's ads??? Hot n Juicy, Hot n Juicy? Well this was a 5 napkin burger, cooked to perfection, saddled nicely on a sesame seed bun, and topped with pickles, bacon, onions and lettuce. Since they start you off with 1/2 a Dill pickle and a huge cherry tomato I added that on top too for a nice touch of heat. My friends and I were lucky enough to get a spot in the back parking lot on a Saturday night prime time. Once we walked in there were two seats by the bar - scored again. Our seats were right in front of the small griddle cooking all the mondo burgers. This place was BUSY as heck. The beers came out fast, but they really sucked. Maybe they have old taps or something. The complimentary pickles and peppers were nice. My friend and I ordered our burgers and it took over an hour to get our burger which was very sad since we had to watch every burger finish and it wasn't ours. I ordered the cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato and fried onions. I must say this burger deserves 5 stars! It was super delicious, HUGE and very inexpensive (under $10). The french fries were alright. I couldn't have more than a few since the burgers were massive and I ate the entire thing. The boneless buffalo wings were basically chicken nuggets smeared with sauce. They weren't inherently bad, I just expected something a little better than Buffalo Wild Wings type stuff. The service though was my main beef: slow as hell, completely ignored my water glass (although the other two people I were with were well stocked) and they claimed they had no cider - when you could plainly see bottles of cinn-ful angry orchard in the cooler by the patron bottles. One of the people I was with decided to forgo an actual burger and get mozzarella sticks as his entree, these were treated like an appetizer and out far before the two burgers, which led to awkward eating in front of us. I was so excited to try this place, as I have heard they have the best burgers in Jersey! We ordered the fried shrimp with the medium marinara sauce, the shrimp aren't your ordinary fried shrimp they are either blackened or rubbed with a seasoning that has alittle bit of a kick to them, they were very delicious! The only downside was they don't clean the back of the shrimp. We also ordered the bacon cheeseburger and the cheeseburger with Taylor ham and a side of fries. We ordered them medium and they were perfectly cooked. The burgers were very large and I liked the fact that although they were so large they were not real dense and heavy, I found the meat to be almost lighter if that makes sense. Wtf, lines crossed? Service too slow to send back so I just drank it but argh. Seriously, best burger in NJ? Maybe the largest, or most ounces of meat per dollar. It was cooked properly medium rare, to their credit, but devoid of salt and not really seared either, just bland. Juicy bcos it was not overcooked but I wouldn't rush in just for the burger. Wings were pretty good, 10 for $9, deep fried then slathered with a rather tasty & spicy sauce, worth getting. But not enhanced by the sealed packet of dressing on the side, and you can just forget about celery. We were not offered any of the peppers that other yelpers have raved about. Roast beef special on Thursdays but that's for *lunch*, it was all gone by 5pm. Oh it has the look and feel of a good dive bar, even the kitchen right in the same room, but the damn music was way too loud for a dive bar. Making you're way down a busy street in the southern Newark area, Krug's Tavern doesn't stand out from the buildings you'll be passing by and presents itself as a simple dive bar. Stepping in, it's still pushing the typical dive bar look and feel with a decent bar size area in the front and some small tables & seats offered in the back with a few TV's and dart boards around the perimeter. Beer selection steps up the game with a few more options that one may expect and a decent amount of IPA's for the pale ale fans. Krug's burgers are something I didn't expect walking into this joint but certainly stood up to the great ratings they have earned themselves over the years. With well cooked, juicy and the best kind of greasy burgers being served to us made them standout from the pack. Keeping the juices in the burger while still being able to give the bun a little crunch to them is a skill very few places can offer. Pairing well with the beers that we ordered, you are given a massive hamburger that melts in your mouth and fills you to the breaking point. Match it up with some onion rings or a large pickle and you've got yourself a meal for the night that will hold you over to breakfast. The atmosphere is excellent, certainly the place to hang out at after work, meet up with a few friends, enjoy some meat patties and beers and strike up conversations of who will actually finish their burger in one sitting. My two friends and I walked in around 8:15pm on a Tuesday night and seated ourselves. At about 8:30pm, the waiter finally came to us and asked what we wanted. We wanted to see the menu. So he gave them to us and came back after awhile to take our orders. We all ordered a 12oz burger and we shared a plate of mozzerella cheese fries. Around 9:15pm, I asked our waiter while he was passing us to check up on our food because I was starving and it seemed like eternity. While I was asking, he just looked at me and kept walking. Then he came back and told me that there are tables who came before us and still haven't gotten their food, and that the burgers are 12oz so it takes awhile to cook. No apology for the long wait. We finally got our food around 9:30pm. My bun was coldish, and the meat was just luke warm, so obviously it had been sitting for awhile. The burger was pretty juicy but flavorless -- it tasted like they didn't use any seasoning, so I lightly salted it after every bite. The fries were also not salty enough either. I was running low on water toward the end of my meal but the waiter never returned to give a refill. I eventually ran out and got thirsty. This place is definitely overrated. In and of itself, my pizza burger was worth $7.50 (again, not much flavor but good to fill you up - not sure if I would pay $5 for the fries again though), but the fact that I had to circle the location a few times to find parking along with the lack of attention and service ultimately keep me from wanting to go back. We arrived a little after 2:45 on Sunday, the bar area was packed, only 1 table unoccupied that was being sprayed with dirty AC water. We waited for a few moments for a table in the back "dining area" and sat down. Our waitress came by shortly and took our drink order, which she forgot, then forgot again. She was clearly overwhelmed. We ordered our food (fries, a plain burger, bacon cheese burger, and a chicken sandwich) at 3pm, and shortly after a different waiter gave us a homemade pickle and hot peppers. We eventually were able to flag down our waitress again and order a second round of beer, but that took at least 15 minutes to do. At 4:02 our fries came out. We'd been there an hour and were still waiting on the main food. At 4:08 the waitress finally apologized and said they were running behind. Oh, really? I couldn't tell. Quite the understatement. Food finally came out at 4:12. While waiting, we saw 2 different women cruising the restaurant selling illegal DVDs, watches, and sunglasses. It was entertaining to watch families pick out their knockoff fashions. This one dad at a table near us literally tried on 15 different pairs of sunglasses for 20 minutes, so that was amusing. Onto the burger- The best burger in NJ was cooked nicely (medium for my friend and I) but absolutely flavorless. I purposely ordered the plain burger. No cheese, no anything, so I could taste and experience the "best burger." Honestly after the first 2 bites, and only tasting the bun, I thought maybe my mouth was numb from eating the hot peppers. This actually crossed my mind as a reasonable explanation. Never in my life have I had a burger that didn't taste like a burger, so clearly there must be another explanation, right? Right? But my friend who ordered the bacon cheeseburger said the same thing-- the burger itself was flavorless. It was so bizarre! I've never had a burger that tasted like nothing. Zero taste. So I added ketchup and the remainder of the hot peppers and a pickle to give it flavor. The meat itself was nice, thick and juicy. It was definitely cooked correctly as far as I could tell. It wasn't overcooked at all. The bun was full of grease. But where was the flavor of the meat?? This is one of life's great mysteries. I don't think I'll ever know the answer. Someone engineered the incredible burgerless-flavored burger. Husband ordered the chicken sandwich and said it was subpar. So, overall- slow service, bad AC, and flavorless burgers. First of all, you have to keep in mind this is a dive bar so don't expect to be wine and dined with white table cloth. But better believe this food is amazing! I have tried tons of places for calamari and this by far tops off every calamari I have ever had. The outside of the fried calamari is absolutely crisp and fried to perfection. The calamari is not at all chewy and is very tender. The marinara dip that comes with the calamari can be ordered as mild, medium, or hot. We got medium and it had a perfect kick of spice to it. Secondly, the burgers here are to die for! I can't even compare this burger because it has topped practically every burger place I have been too. Unlike most Americans I am not a big fan of the hamburger, this dates back to my time as a McDonalds employee back in the summers when I was a freshman in High School. So I'm really big On service. The food here was a five star and that's the only reason why I'm leaving three stars. We were eating and these two men left without paying apparently because they waited too long for someone to give them the bill. They left and said "I'll call later to pay." Mind you, there's only two servers with a whole bunch of people. Walked into a crowed front bar on right with high tables on left walked on more to the back room where there was larger tables and 3 Huge tvs (looks like 2 45" and 1 65") all with the game on. Ordered a cheese burger and fries med well. And a Corona. She brought me a wonderful super cold beer which was extremely refreshing. When burger came it first looked like it was on the burnt side but gave it a shot. To my surprise it was PERFECTLY cooked, juicy and simply delicious.
