One / Two star less as the hotel is next to Amtrak, so you could be awaken at all hours of the night by sounds of the trains - this should be disclosed to customers. The lack of a mini fridge can be issue, since you will have to use ice bags in the tub to preserve leftovers. Walls in room are quite thin - so you can hear your neighbors as well as things going on in graveled parking lot. Locks in the rooms were cheap /flimsy, so be glad that Mystic is a safe place. Overall a decent place to bunker down. Just bring ear plugs.

On check-in, we met Paul, who gave us plenty of good tips for what to do and see and where to eat in the area. He didn't steer us wrong. The hotel is located a convenient distance from most of the major attractions in Mystic and the surrounding areas. They even have bicycles you can borrow to ride into town. They also have a tremendous indoor swimming pool, a real lap-size pool, which you typically don't find in a hotel. Breakfast is served to your door. This isn't room service; it's the included continental breakfast, which you call or text for starting at 8 AM. Breakfast delivery was fast, and they will also bring refills if you call or text again and ask. It was very convenient not to have to get all dressed early in the morning and traipse across to another building just to eat. The room was clean, and thankfully there was absolutely no evidence at all of bedbugs. Now for the stuff we weren't so happy with. First of all, the room was noisy. Really noisy. We were located on the second floor, and we could hear noise coming in from the driveway and parking lot all night long. Our room also faced the train, which we could see from our window and which ran all night long. We could also easily hear our neighbors speaking in their room. In short, the rooms need a serious upgrade in soundproofing. Our stay was at the beginning of October, and nights were chilly. There was a fireplace in our room, but it wasn't working. When we asked about getting it turned on, the desk clerk said that all the fireplaces were in the process of being turned on for the colder months, and she would send someone over to turn ours on. Well, no one ever came, and our fireplace never worked during our four night stay. It was very disappointing because it would have been a nice way to take the chill off the air and to provide some romantic ambience. The room also could have really used a mini fridge, even a tiny one, just to hold leftovers from meals out. We had to use insulated grocery shopping bags filled with ice to keep drinks and leftovers cold. Don't expect much of anything from the television. It was the size of a small computer monitor, so watching it from across the room in bed really wasn't great. There is also an extremely limited selection of channels. If you want to watch TV, you would do better bringing a device and watching your own streaming services that way. Finally, the rooms are not secure from the outside. At least ours wasn't. We stayed in one of the rooms that was subdivided from a larger house. There was an outside door that led directly to a stairway to the second floor, where there were two doors: one for our room and the other for a separate room. The outside door had no lock at all and no auto-close mechanism. On two of the five days we stayed there, we returned to the room to find the outside door standing wide open. Our room itself only had a simple lock on the door handle. It was the kind of lock that you put on a bedroom door in a private home, not as the sole lock keeping strangers out of your hotel room. If I had been staying there as a woman alone, I definitely would not have felt safe. Despite the drawbacks, we would stay again for the positives.

I'll start by saying that the martini was excellent.....ending with my ice cream which was cold and perfect. Everything in between.... meh..!! Let me explain.... this place has history, it's historic, lots of stories.. it could be so much more. It's a shame that someone looking to make a quick buck, invests the bare minimum to turn the maximum profit. Taste and appearance wasn't too bad, but the menu was limited and plain, the wine selection was very poor and the service was terrible. I don't blame the servers, clearly it was understaffed! I thought I new what I was getting myself into by staying at Bay Willows Inn, and I was pleasantly surprised that it was better than I expected. Our first phone call was with a lovely woman, who has a pretty thick accent. There were times that I didn't quite understand what she was saying, but really that is on me. She was so pleasant that I found it endearing. Upon arrival the Inn looks dated, but you can tell from the plants that they enjoy keeping up the location. Everything outside is old, but in great condition. So far it is better than I expected. When I checked in the dude at the counter was great. We filled out the stuff, processed my card, and then I got a goodie bad with some fruit, chips, granola bars, and bottled water. It was a plain paper bag with Bay Willows Inn written in sharpie. Is it a professionally printed bag that obviously costs an arm and a leg? No. It is a project of love that is absolutely adorable? Yes! He also said they don't do breakfast, but gave us 4 gift cards to the Dunkin Donuts across the street! Awesome! The room is just like the rest of the place. It is a little dated, but it seems clean. Visible surfaces are clean, floor is vacuumed, the shockingly pink tile in the bathroom is scrubbed. The ultra bright vanity mirror above the sink is spotless. The window unit air conditioning was set to 65, and pumping away. Everything is way better than expected. We had just driven 15 hours to get here, and the first thing we did was jump in the shower. Water pressure wasn't top notch, but the water was hot and the shower was massive. It was not one of those tub inserts that you get at the chain places, but a hand tiled shower with a 6 inch lip and a floor drain. I'm a big dude, and I'm used to rubbing my shoulders against the curtain in hotel showers, but the shower stall in this place is massively huge and awesome. I love it. I also love the childlike curtain in the bathroom with the boats. The TV is small, and awkwardly placed, but we didn't come here to lock ourselves in the room and watch netflix. The wifi didn't work when we got here, but I requested that he cycle the router, and everything is up and running. I asked where could get craft beer, and he gave me a great suggestion. At the end of this diatribe what you can walk away from is this. Bay Willows Inn is a labor of love. They don't have Hilton money to do inconsequential updates, but they care so much more than any chain hotel manager every would. Everything is dated, but wonderful. Everything is older, but loved. Everything is home spun, but so much more meaningful. I am so glad we booked this stay.

The whole arrangement of the room was inconvenient with tiny bath- shower combo and nowhere outside the bathroom to do your toilette. Water was hot and plentiful. Sitting was in an anteroom which had a door that had to be closed to access the bath. Stay if you must and want to save money. Not a place for a special weekend
