Super friendly and Don greets every customer in Japanese and as they leave the establishment. Open kitchen right behind so you can see K in action. They also have onigiri but due to the busy lunch rush weren't able to make any to order. Everything is cooked to order, flavors are exactly what you'd want and expect. I got the katsudon with eggs. Crispy pork cutlet and flavorful eggs on top of perfectly cooked rice. I added an order of kaarage cause fried chicken. I've been to K's over a dozen times now. Each and every time, no matter what I've ordered, I've been very happy. The food is prepared fresh when you order, and the flavors are just outstanding. From the awesome onigiri, to the donburi, and even the mugicha (when they have it), it's all so, so good. The family is so inviting and helpful. It reminds me quite a bit of the Japanese restaurants I ate in growing up or when I visited Japan as a young adult: great food, clean and simple place, reasonable prices, friendly and helpful staff. I bought a Babe Ruth the other day. I've been partial to them for years. It's not my go-to everytime, simply in my rotation. I was startled because the diameter/circumference resembled my pointer finger. $1.50 plus tax for what seemed like a somewhat long fun-sized candy bar. I'm not conflating the medium katsu curry dish here to that shrinkflated Babe Ruth I had last Saturday but the vibe is similar. I guess it's just my age but I distinctly remember when $15 would buy twice the volume of food at a restaurant. It's no different here than it is anywhere else. Stuff costs more these days. Quality is really, really good. The curry was amazing. It's about as authentic as it gets. The menu is what it is, they don't offer every Japanese dish known to mankind. The gyoza was a little chewy, and the filling lacked flavor (fix it and I give 5 stars). The drink cups were a little small. The service was very friendly and helpful. They served me dry gyoza. I brought it to the owner (all the others were gone for their 3hour afternoon break). He said it was fine. I showed him where it was still dry and the dough raw. I am obsessed with k's- it's my favorite restaurant in Provo (and probably Utah as well). It's family owned and they are so sweet and thoughtful. The food is so good and so is the service. Sorry to be a downer, but I am absolutely not impressed. This is not authentic, though they try. I had the gyūdon. The beef was plentiful but not enough onion. The beef was not thin enough and too thick of a cut. It also was not shaved ribeye, which provides the marbling required for tender meat. (See my photo and compare with photos of authentic gyūdon.) The marinade lacked shōyu (soy sauce), sugar, Mirin, and dashi no moto (fish bouillon). They also do not offer kizami shoga (pickled ginger) or furikaki (rice seasoning), which makes an authentic gyūdon flavor. I had a bite of my son's katsudon. It didn't look good or authentic and it tasted disappointing, too. It was sugary! Way too sweet and like the gyūdon, not enough shōyu or dashi. There also weren't enough onions. I definitely make better katsudon, and that's my baseline. The gyōza (pot stickers), while not spectacular, were acceptable. For you RM's that served in Nihon, this is not it, though by how brisk business was when I was here, seemed pretty popular. All the five and four star reviews seem to reflect that. Well...good. It's like the town I'm currently living in. On the east side, all the Chinese restaurants are highly rated. I've eaten at all of them and they do not live up to the hype, especially when compared with the ones on the west side of town. Many peeps just do not know what good Chinese food is. Same for this restaurant, too. I think many Americans do not understand what good Japanese food is. The service is very good and friendly. I'm sorry this review is so hidoi (harsh). But I just call it the way it is, for good or for bad. 5* = A top favorite. Mind-blowing good. I will definitely return and I will go out of my way to go here. Worth every dime of my money. 4* = Outstanding. Top-tier. Some elements not quite as good as it gets, but it still is worthy of my regular business. 3* = Good experience. I might do repeat business if it is convenient, the only option, the only one in its category, or on a whim, but would not be among the first thing to come to mind. This place is amazing and it specializes in one type of dish! I know from some friends of mine that this is how you would find restaurants in Japan... they make one dish and they make it excellently! The seating was great for lots of small to medium groups but the chairs are a bit hard if you're sitting for a long time lol. The staff member who helped me was amazing and greeted everyone that walked in and said bye to everyone as they left. Of course, it would mean more to you if you know just enough Japanese to understand or say it back! The katsu was soooooo delicious and it was a pretty big helping so you could end up having some leftovers. My uncle who lives in Japan recommended K's to me years ago when it first opened up, but it's a little far from my house, so we had never been. We ended up going to a comedy show down the street, so we decided to give it a try. It's SO GOOD!! Really authentic and delicious. Reminded me of what my Japanese aunt would cook for us or where they would take us to eat when we were visiting them in San Francisco. I had sukiyaki and it was perfection. Highly recommend. This is a great option for downtown Provo. Price is reasonable, fast and kind service, and great options. I ordered the curry (not the dish everyone told me to get) but something that caught my interest at the time. Although the dish was filling, it was a pretty basic meal. The flavor was kinda flat, just one taste through the whole dish. The meat was well cooked and the rice portion is awesome. My wife and friends order the bowls and after trying hers, I can see why. Delicious food. We were a party of 7 on a Wednesday over the lunch hour so it took about 15-20 minutes for the orders to come up. The food was freshly made and great flavors in every dish. We were driving through the SLC/Provo area from southern Utah and wanted a quick Asian bite to eat. We came across this place on Yelp and thought we would give it a try with the good ratings. Reservations are encouraged (and can be done online). This place only has Donburi (rice bowls) and comes with pickles and miso soup. Appetizers are also fairly good but they're cheap at $3.50 (such a good deal considering other Japanese places charge $6-8 for gyoza). I ordered the Yakiniku (Korean BBQ beef) donburi bowl. It was pretty good and you get a lot of meat and riced for the price you pay! Staff were super friendly too. K's is a taste of some traditional Japanese that is comforting and warm. They focus on a limited number of items and do them very well, and with a smile and warm greeting. The decor is simple Japanese that does not distract from your meal. Where to I start, well with the gyoza, of course. Any time my son is around, that is a given. All of us give the gyoza two thumbs up. Our son gets both the fried and steamed, but we tend to prefer the steamed that have the browning on the bottoms from the pan. They have other sides from salted edamame to the Korokke. Korokke are like breaded and fried mashed potato balls (YUM). For me, it is all about the katsu curry. The katsu is tender on the inside with the crisp coating that puts a smile on my face. I adore the curry that takes me back to so many similar meals I had in Asia. There are other dishes we love as well, including the shogayakidon (ginger pork), oyakodon (chicken and egg), and shiobutadon (salted pork). There are other katsu options which are also both great. Our first impressions were that the owner and staff were SO nice! It feels very fun and authentic. Fast service. Sort of feels like a hole in the wall, but that's half the fun of it! I had a small katsu curry bowl and some of the deep fried gyoza. I hadn't had these smaller variety on gyoza in a long time and really loved them. I was not impressed at all. I got a katsu curry and it was not good. The rice was mushy, the curry itself tasted starchy and flavorless aside from super salty. Additionally, the katsu was lacking flavor and the meat itself was covered in too much starch for frying. Additionally, I didn't like that they just put on the same exact garnishing for every dish that comes out of that kitchen-- not authentic at all. What bothered me the most was that their curry had nothing in it! Just curry sauce! And I guess that's why it would taste so flavorless and masked over with excessive salt. Also, for a Japanese restaurant, it had some pretty terrible rice-- "you had one job" is what came up in my mind. I'm used to eating much higher quality Japanese food because I'm from Honolulu. When I first walked in, a pleasing aroma filled the air and made me excited to try all the flavors. The Kaarage chicken is so fresh and has the perfect coating and ginger flavor. I've been coming to K's for a few years now. I make the drive down from Saratoga Springs to eat the amazing curry here. I spend half the year in southern California (mecca of authentic Asian food) and I can attest that K's curry is just as good, if not better, than the popular Japanese chain Coco Ichibanya. In fact, K's curry was better than any curry I had in Tokyo. The curry itself is delicious, but the katsu quality is probably some of the best I've ever had. Shocking to find something like this in little old Provo. So authentic, so delicious, and the gyoza is also amazing. Onigiri was also on point. I want to try even more bowls here, but I can't shake away my addiction to the curry. Thank you for bringing authentic Japanese cuisine to my childhood town. read more

K's Kitchen is owned and operated my a cute couple - he seats every guest at their tables and checks on them throughout the meal, she is the chef! I really love the oyakodon, but their Katsudon is also incredible. Every meal comes with miso soup and some marinated cucumber slices. Their portions are large and prices are very reasonable!
