Phenomenal! Everything was delicious and the service was great. I wanted to have some variety so I got the Pork Katsu Curry Lunch Special and Alaska Roll. The pork was juicy yet crispy and the curry was perfectly seasoned. Sometimes curry can be a little too spicy for me but this was just right. The Alaska Roll had big chunks of delicious salmon and was very refreshing with the cucumber. I was also impressed with how speedy the service was with only one person running front of house. All in all, amazing experience and I'm looking forward to trying out the other menu options. read more

Very disappointing. I don't mind paying for good food but this was a waste of money. My review is based strictly on the food. Service was fine. We were the only customers at the time. The chicken Donburi bowl, the "vegetables" were crumbly tempura pieces of carrot and onion. The tempura sampler was pieces of shrimp, terrible microwaved chicken that looked processed and the same crumbly pieces of carrot and onion. That's it. Sushi did not seem fresh. Took my wife out to lunch but the the pizza place we decided to go to was packed, so we decided to try out Demae for the first time , the food was so good and it was surprisingly cheap . Very disappointing. Very inexpensive, but that's what you're paying for. Maybe the local college scene doesn't care so much, but when I stopped in to try something new, I wasn't very impressed. I like that this place is less busy compared to Happy Sumo and other places. Like a lot less busy, whenever I go in it's pretty empty. I guess not great news for them but nice for me. ha, I also like that it has a family-owned, genuine feel to it. Sushi was good, not as good as Happy Sumo, and they don't have many unique, speciality-type rolls. But for standard salmon/tuna/california/philadelphia fare, it's a good option. My first visit to Demae didn't leave a strong impression. The space was reasonably well kept up and attractively appointed. The service was quick and courteous. The food followed suit. My donburi chicken wasn't overly sweet (a good thing) if a bit gooey. The tempura style onions and matchstick carrots were a nice touch. My SLF's chicken fried rice was flavorful and fresh. But, the price seemed a bit steep. The two dishes were $25 with a modest tip. This is not the best Japanese food in the Provo-Orem area by any stretch of the imagination, but decent option if you are in the area. Mild recommend. read more

My husband and I both lived in Japan and have been looking for a good Japanese restaurant in Provo for a while. We were very happy to find Demae. The waiters were attentive without being overbearing and we were served promptly.The miso soup was excellent, the salad refreshing, and the food tasted just like it should. My husband loved his bento box meal and I really enjoyed my curry. My husband had tuna and salmon nigiri, a vegas roll, and shrimp tempura. It is usually very expensive for him to get everything he likes, so I for one was glad that the bento box was such a great deal. He was so full he couldn't even finish it all. The only reason I don't give Demae five stars? My tonkatsu was a little tough. I look forward to trying some of their noodles next time. read more

The lady working the night I ordered seemed flustered and annoyed that I had asked what came with a Chicken Katsu Curry and I just wanted to make sure I knew what I was paying for. I asked what came with this dish since the menu was not detailed, she told me it came with carrots, potatoes and onions. To my disappointment the dish was not even a full cup of rice, a sea of curry gravy with tiny pieces of carrots, no potatoes and onions. There were 6 pieces of chicken katsu slices along with salad and soup. This was EXTREMELY upsetting since the total came to $13.95! And there were ONLY two people in the whole restaurant. Had the chicken Katsu bento lunch. Ordered green tea with it. Tastes great. Chicken was done very well. The bed of shredded tempura veggies was good and actually ate it all. I think it's mostly for dressing but it was a nice touch. The measure of this bento box is how the chicken tastes and it was done perfectly. Here's the thing about Demae if you don't get the special their prices are too high. Yet somehow I'll still pay full price once in awhile cause I'm craving simple classic Japanese. I just want a bento box and simple sushi. Their fresh made rolls hit the spot if you're sick of saucy over complicated sushi. Don't expect good service but I don't really mind I just love their rice bowls too much to worry about if they're paying attention to me. This is a Wonderful place for a leisurely uninterrupted catch up with friends. The food is good though very traditional. I have always been pleased with my experience at Demae. The food has always been good, service is kind an efficient. My favorite is the bento box with its variety and portion size. You get both the miso soup and a small salad which is just enough to keep your tummy from growling while dinner is being made. It surprises me that it is not packed but I enjoy the quiet atmosphere. read more

I have no interest in eating discount sushi at an old dirty place run by hipsters (I'm assuming it's still run by hipsters, haven't been there in a while but that stuff never changes in Provo.) Cheap sushi is about the worst thing I can think of, but then I think of being at Demae on a Tuesday. I would rather gouge my eyes out. The rolls are cheap, yes, which is why this rat hole is still in business. Cheap rolls that are roughly the size of--and strangely, have the flavor of--a postage stamp. I lived in Japan for a short time, so hear ye! hear ye! This is not your typical americanized version of "good Japanese food." In fact, it is very similar to some of the small, very cheap Japanese restaurants in Tokyo. I miss the days walking up, putting my money in a vending machine, handing my ticket over and indulging in similar meals for about 3 dollars. Here my bento box lunch was 8 dollars, but I got Katsu Chicken, Rice, Miso soup, 2 California Roll pieces (quite good actually), and "salad" (equivalent to 1 ice berg lettuce leaf ripped into fourths). All of the food was very good and I walked away full. At dinner prices it might not be worth it, but I highly recommend for a quick cheap lunch on a day you're missing Japan read more

I'm not sure you can really complain about fresh sushi at $4 a roll? I'm talking about the Tues. and Thurs. night deal days. I'm a big sushi fan, although I mostly go for crunchy rolls. If you're looking to fill the sushi craving... this is the place. Seriously. I haven't eaten any of their other food, so can't give you a recommendation for that. But go on a Tue. or Thurs. for a $4 roll and you won't be disappointed. For me, the quality of sushi is about as good as you'll get in Utah and for only half the price. Granted, the rolls are smaller, you still get 8 pieces, and again for that price..what can you expect?? I order three rolls for $12 and I was full and happy. read more

The service at De Mae is absolutely terrible. If you go during one of the $3.50/roll specials, it's worse than terrible. Expect to wait an hour for your rolls, at the minimum. I recommend ordering out if you really want to take advantage of the special. As for the sushi... meh. It's very plain and not particularly fresh. If you're paying any more than the $3.50/roll special price they offer on Tuesdays and Thursdays, you're paying way too much. The ginger-soy house salad is tasty, and the miso is pretty good. In sum: cheap sushi, don't expect too much, and order out to avoid the absurd wait in the restaurant. If you're paying full price, go to Yamato instead. read more

Not only did it smell far too fishy but the avocado in my Vegas roll was almost entirely dark brown. I gave a couple pieces away to other coworkers and everyone had the same opinion. Demae's best attribute is it's location. If you go, stick with the bento box but stay clear of the sushi and sashimi unless thawed frozen fish with the consistency of a sponge is your thing.
