Patiently waited for 40 mins (as we were told..) and watched groups that were there way after us get seated. Hostess was not friendly from the start and after we asked for an update, she gave us a cold shoulder, and proceeded to feed us excuses. As a person in the service industry myself, I know how Food and Beverage operations work. Clearly she was doing this out of spite. No manager ever came out to help... and we have been loyal Kubels patrons for years. We will find a new place to go to from now on... long story short, if you have a table bigger than 6, you could wait for hours. Hope this helps someone. read more

Chicken tenders here used to be amazing, but something has clearly changed. These were possibly the worst I've ever had. We had orders of both buffalo tenders and regular ones and all were soggy. 5 orders in all. The fries weren't much better. I'm certainly no expert on cooking but I'm guessing this has something to do with the temperature of the fryer. The only reason I'm giving any stars is that the clam chowder is still excellent. If you really want it, my review, go somewhere else. Service was terrible, servers standing around while our plates were empty and not removed from table for next course. Bus boy walking around not doing anything. Management has not instructed service people how to serve their customers. They are leaving an enormous amount of tips and income in someone else's pocket because hopefully the paying customers will go somewhere else. Also charged for everything, two cocktails, one vodka and tonic upcharge for the tonic of $2.75 are you kidding. Go somewhere else please. read more

My kind of bar/pub. We sat at the bar I ordered the Rubin with fries and a mimosa both we solid. Service was good and friendly. Only negative was they give you separate checks for liquor and food. It makes settling the bill cumbersome. I like the atmosphere and the clams on a 1/2. Shell and crab cake looked awesome. read more

Stopped by on April 19, 2017. Very late lunch about 2 pm but 4-5 tables were in full swing. Service was slow. Only one waiter. Bartender on the phone so cocktail was tardy. Rum punch cocktail turned out to be average at best and expensive. The K burger was good not great. The lobster mac and cheese was average. read more

We've been wanting to try the Barnegat Kubel's for a few years and finally did this week. We're a party of 10, which I know isn't easy, but we were hugely disappointed. Website says no reservations; somehow the people in front of us checked in with a reservation. They sat us outside under the tent. Fine, but the chairs were very uncomfortable. Our waitress was spread way too thin - not her fault. We had to ask for silverware after the appetizers/salads came out. She stood at the end of the table and yelled out the orders as they arrived rather than bringing them to the person who ordered them. I had a wedge salad that was literally just a wedge of lettuce with a few tomatoes lining the edge of the plate. Added the shrimp for an extra $15 got 4 small shrimp on a separate plate. Honestly couldn't wait for the whole experience to be over. In contrast, we ate at Tucker's a couple nights later and the Seafood Cobb salad was amazing. HUGE sharable salad piled with crabmeat, salmon, and 10 shrimp, plus a ton of other ingredients - for the same price as the terrible salad at Kubel's. I know Kubel's has been around forever - we weren't looking for fancy, just good food and a good experienced. Blah. read more

We eat every year we rent on LBI. Good spot in BL. 4 stars if you stick to the basics (by burgers, local seafood). Avoid higher end entrees and the BBQ. Ok beer selection. Servers aim to please. read more

Mystery Pricing! The prices were not advertised. I tried to look it up on my phone to no avail. The QR code would not work and that's was after trying to load a different app. I asked the server how much the wings cost she said $13.00 and I was charged $16.00 They came to the table Luke warm. UPDATE: Went back to PRIVATELY discuss with the chef the next AM at 9:00 what happened and unsatisfactory outcome. His words, "Well my advice to you as a gluten free person is to know what you can and cannot eat. And you can't eat rice." If by that you mean Uncle Ben's Rice Pilaf, yup. You're right. Just thought for $30 a plate I wouldn't be getting a pre made rice mix with orzo noodles. No cure for stupid. ------- I grew up going to Kubel's. Overpriced on an island isn't overpriced- they need to pay for a year of survival and hurricane insurances in one season. I get it. But in 2016, I don't expect a manager to have a full working knowledge of food allergies but at least an awareness and a care. Chef/cook, too. I have a cluster of autoimmune diseases and just completed my second round of cancer/ chemo/ radiation last year at 38 and I am on my first "real" vacation in years. I had biopsies of my gut- I have gluten intolerance. This is because I lack bacteria to digest it. So I called ahead and the girl answering said they'd accommodate. The waitress had not been given any guidance by kitchen staff and so I approached manager on Sunday night at 7:00 PM. She said they can make a limited number of dishes GF by for example crying them in a pan with oil, not butter. OK. This is where I recognized we'd hit a bit of a wall. "Actually, dairy isn't such an issue- it's gluten." She says, "no rice, then?" I explained rice or potato are are FINE as long as they are plain. So she orders me my choice-fra diavolo" over rice. Kinda weird but I was sick of trying to find a carb on the menu I could consume without Panko, flour, breadcrumbs, croutons... It arrives and I delved in with salacious delight and I swore I must have been so famished it was better than I hoped. Well of course it was. It wasn't rice. It was RICE PILAF (for the uneducated it is 15% "orzo" shaped pasta). When I called over the manager that recommended this I explained in a way that would make sure the neighboring tables wouldn't hear. But she neither apologized, nor offered a refund and acted downright annoyed. The waitress was 200% apologetic and as a nursing student explained she had placed the order with chef explaining I was GF.... Whatever, forget you jerks. Oh, wait. I won't be able to- for a good week I'll have an autoimmune flare up that will be like a full blown arthritic attack for weeks followed by fibromyalgia. Thanks for caring. read more

Ate in Kubel's a few weeks ago. Still can't get over the experience. We had a very sullen waitress with no personality. I ordered the crab cakes at $25.99. Got a sub-standard salad. The crab cakes were advertised as "with two sauces". I could fit the amount of sauce they served under my finger nail. The crab cakes were the worst I have ever eaten. Absolutely no flavor, no seasonings, and the dredged them in flour and sauteed them - all you could taste was the flour. To add insult to injury, they were served on a dessert plate, not even a dinner plate. I was offered potatoes OR broccoli (would it have killed them to give a person both?) My husband ordered the deluxe cheese steak at $14.99. 5 inches of crap on a sandwich. As locals, we used to eat at Kubel's when ever we were in Barnegat Light. Never again. I'm used to being ripped off on the Island, but this took the cake. They should also look for a new chef. read more

Have to agree that Kubels not what it used to be. I went last night and the reviews are correct. The sizzling steak smelled up the entire dining room. I have been going here for 10 years as a frame of reference. The wait was normal (long) and the service wasn't bad. The salad was fresh but the seafood tired. Really need to up their game. Even though there aren't many choices in BL, patrons will bolt at some point. read more

A heck of a wait most of the time... Sometimes even on the off season. Their food is mostly good. Actually decent, but there is this one steak that smells horrid. When a patron orders said steak, the plate comes out sizzling. Soon thereafter, the restaurant will begin to reek of this awful smell. There've been times that I actually need to go outside because I couldn't breathe. So if you go here avoid the smelly steak (apparently its inedible). Otherwise a nice restaurant. It's pretty noisy and usually crowded. As for the long wait, there is no where to sit either, so you're either stuck awkwardly standing or waiting elsewhere. Their Fried Coconut Shrimp is amazing (and I don't like shrimp lol) and their crab cakes are really good. I also suggest their crunchy chicken flautas. The only reason I'll give it 3 stars is that wretched stench of the steak. (Weird I know lol) Oh and PS the New England Clam Chowder has pork in it. Not a problem for some, but as I don't eat pork, I was pissed when I realized that it had it in it after my first bite. It didn't say it on the menu. So if you have any special food precautions, be sure to ask about your meal. read more

My favorite casual dinner place on the Northside of LBI.Love the outside patio area, fair pricing on the menu (thanks for not gouging!!!), wonderful bar area with great waitstaff and bartenders. Lee's the best- hilarious & a great bartender/waitress. Great cheeseburgers, chowder, ribs, fish, specials. On my wish list would be more accommodation for gluten-free. Well, I can't say I fell in love with this place. The wait time was pretty bad, an hour. Though we did have a good sized party, so I will give them that. If that was the only problem I had, they probably would have gotten some more stars. So once we get seated it took a tremendous amount of time for some one to even come and pay attention to us at all. Once they did, it took a tremendous amount of time to get the less than mediocre food to the table. I get that the waiter was busy, and I am extremely understanding of that, but by the time we were sitting there for ever, lots of tables had opened up. So they weren't that busy any more. Bottom line, if you like to wait forever for sub mediocre and way over priced for what you are getting food, and tiny tiny drinks. Then this is the place for you! read more

I have one question. Did I eat in the same restaurant as all these negative comments? My experience was fantastic!!! My server, Maggie, was great. The place was crowded but that didn't matter. I have to say they are trying to keep open during Covid. Staff dies hustle but they are overwhelmed. Service wasn't like it used to be. We had to ask for water, set ups and bread. Food was average do we were disappointed. Been here so many times. Glad we weren't attacked by Sea Gulls as there were so many around as good was being brought out to the tented area. Outside deck is nice as is the tented area, however the attempt to make that bigger by putting people on the stones with no lighting and barely coverage from pooping Sea Gills should be taken away or not used at night. They are trying. Times are tough. read more

We came for lunch and ordered a white owl burger, crab dip, and a crab cake lunch along with two beers. All in all I was very pleased with our waitress and atmosphere. The burger was great according to my husband and the dip was awesomely tasteful. The crab cake could use a different dip rather than just tarter sauce or cocktail but it definitely was better than other places that have the cake packed with a bunch of other things. I'll be the first to admit that Kubel's has run hot and cold over the years, especially food quality (bar and servers have always been excellent), but the current chef and kitchen this season has been the best in at least 25 years. While the "nightly specials" haven't changed much the whole season, the specials menu is almost bigger than the regular menu. Most importantly, the food has been AMAZING this season! Ok so We don't go out much to dinner when we are at our home in Surf City, but my sister in law was down and i wanted to give her the outdoor water front experience so we tried Kubel's which we have not been to in 25 years . We joined the wait list on yelp and were seated upon our arrival out side with a nice view of the sunset. Waitress was very sweet and very overwhelmed which caused the service to suffer but she made up for in effort. We had the potato encrusted salmon which was excellent which came with a nice green salad. The salmon was served with nice sauce over spinach. But here is the beef !! My wife is vegetarian and when she Asked if they had any thing she said they only had the beet salad which is crazy. She told us the chef can't guarantee cross contamination with the food which is a cop out. Make a vegetable plate or something.If you like seafood, a nice deck and a beer this place is very good but if you have a dietary restrictions this is not the place for you. A long wait and slow service make for a blessing and a curse at Kubel's. I wonder if perhaps the word is getting out that the food is really (in general) very good and they're having a hard time logistically handling that. The entire table (party of 11, zods) enjoyed their meal. My oldest daughter exclaimed after her first bite: "The shrimp tastes like coconut!" Yes dear, yes it does. And that's why it's glorious. Meanwhile my crabcake & shrimp special was delightful. Unlike another not-to-be-named restaurant just up the road that only takes cash, this crabcake was actually LUMP CRAB MEAT, not filler. No, it wasn't the best crabcake I've ever had... but it was VERY GOOD. The shrimp, now those were spectacular. All the mouth-watering juicy pops-in-your-mouth feeling and taste that you've every wished for from your favorite cockroaches of the sea. Man. Stellar. [Hang on, I need a moment here to calm down.] There wasn't a disappointed palate at the table. Blackened salmon was a hit as well. Um, #protip though: don't order the NE clam chowder. It's a bit like eating watered down chalk. Overall though the food was a hit, the service was good given the size of table and how busy they were, and the waitress was ultra fast with the check (which was appreciated given the extra little tykes we had along). I have a house nearby and we have been coming here for 25+ years. The quality of the food went downhill some years ago, and after a very bad experience, we stopping patronizing. After we saw some good reviews here and elsewhere, we tried it again and found it much improved. Last night was our 4th visit this month, and while there are good things to say, Kubel's still needs to improve. A typical dinner for two with one drink per person plus tip usually comes to about $100. At those prices, patrons should be offered a bread basket. Servers do not offer bread - and when we asked on two occasions for bread - we were served rolls that look like they came out of a bag at Shoprite and were way past their due date. What prompted me to write this review was the disgusting side dish of sauteed green beans served with both of our meals last night. They appear have been reheated and dark/wilted beans were mixed with fresh appropriate green beans - just like you find at a Chinese buffet or hot food bar at a grocery store. Is the owner/manager not looking at what is coming out of the kitchen? You can - and should - do better Kubels. That said, the Crab Pie and Grouper entrees we had last night were delicious. Ordered cheeseburgers, mozzarella sticks, fish and chips, chowder and patty melt special. Food was very good! We went on a Friday at the end of July around 2pm. The place on,y had a couple of other customers so we were seated quickly. Love the popcorn machine in the bar area for customers to help themselves. Our waitress though not very social was very quick and efficient. Always around when we needed her. Parking lot was nice and big. Water and boats viewable from the large windows. Inside decor is a bit rustic but very clean. Wood floor and walls. Fireplace in the middle of the dining area. Easily fit our large group of 8. Bar area is a bit dark and closed in. I would definitely eat here again. read more

We had such a great time at this place. Met the owner in the parking lot and my wife helped her take a picture. She explained the history and made recommendations. I had the seafood fried Diablo and it was stupendous not a pile of pasta with a few pieces of seafood but just the opposite a small pile of pasta with a very large pile of seafood. I actually had trouble finishing it and could have taken it home for a second meal. I wife had the salmon, I should know more about it but I was too focused on my own meal to pay much attention to her, but she loved it. I give this restaurant my highest recommendation and will certainly return again. read more
