I loved my private visit out to Napa to Kuleto Estate. I had a nice visit and their Cabernets were great! The visits are pre-arranged and to the East of Rutherford in the Southern part of St Helena, about 25-30 minutes from the center of St Helena. A little out there off the beaten track, but nonetheless very nice. The only thing I am not real fond of is this steep tasting price of many of the vineyards, its seems like it is gauging the customer. But then again, it is my opinion. You must, must make the drive up to this beautiful Tuscan estate! The story of the architecture is as wonderful as the wine. This was the only winery we insisted on sharing with the other two couples in our party. Laurel was our server and how awesome she was. I believe she may even be the front manager. The pours were very healthy! She quickly picked up on the tone of our party and jumped right in with a great sense of humor. She could hold her own! :) The wine, amazing. Do try the Moscato. It's not what you think, I promise. We bought a bottle after the tasting and walked down to the beautiful terrace with pizza ovens to enjoy the scenery. Laurel didn't push the wine club at all. We still bought a whole case and I'm still considering the club. It's reasonably priced. If you enjoy an occasional port, this one is for you! We had to include two bottles in our case. read more

Let me start by saying I've been to Kuleto 4 times now and I've thoroughly enjoyed each experience and most likely - I'll be back again. This place is that cool and unique. However, it is not perfect and there are a few drawbacks. ESTATE (5 out of 5): Hands down this estate is incredible in every way. It's private, there are no buses filled with drunk tourists, it's indescribably beautiful, and there a ton of little nooks to explore. Best part, after the tour you can stay and hang out on the estate for as long as you like. You can make a strong argument this is the best estate in the valley. ESTATE TIP THAT WILL 10X THE EXPERIENCE: If you don't bring food to picnic here then you are losing at the game of life. Picnicking here at the table overlooking the water, on one of the patches of grass, or in one of the many hidden sitting spots is a MUST!!! You will thank me later. As mentioned, you can stay as long as you like! TOUR (2 of 5): The tour feels like a formality at this place. Most of the discussion on the tour is about how amazing the estate and Pat Kuleto are. We get it, the place is basically a little slice of heaven on earth and Pat is awesome for creating it but I don't need 45 min of talking about it. Take my advice and take the tour as an opportunity to ask questions about anything you are remotely interested that is related to wine. Some of the tour guides are fairly knowledgeable but if you just let them talk they will only talk about Pat and the estate. Do your best to direct the discussion to something actually interesting or worth your time. WINE (3 out of 5): For some reason I just don't love the wines at this place. They are good, but I feel like they either need to be decanted or stored for a period of time before serving. I'm not sure what it is but if we are going just on the wine I rather go to a place like Duckhorn or Paraduxx. TASTING TIP THAT WILL 10X THE EXPERIENCE: Get a seat facing the vineyard for the wine tasting portion after the main tour. After the tour is over people sorta stand around not knowing what to do then casually sit down. Be proactive and move with purpose. Ask the tour guide which table you will be sitting at (if both are empty) then immediately grab a chair and sit down facing the vineyard. Trust me, you rather look out toward the rolling hills and the sun than look at the side of the building. It will make a massive difference. OVERALL (4 out of 5): This place flat out rocks. Going to this place will make you feel like you just took the off ramp from reality and drove into some magical kingdom of wonder filled with quality wine, unbelievably friendly people, phenomenal conversation, jaw-droppingly beautiful views, and a super cool dog. Beautiful, mountain winery. I could just spend my entire day on this estate, and would love to if given the opportunity. There's actually a number of areas that can be reserved, including one overlooking the pond and another with a wood burning pizza oven. Kuleto Estates is probably another winery that you wouldn't think to stop at without a reason, but if you do get up there, you will be amazed! A wine tasting appointment typically includes a tour (as long as you're on time). The tour covers the estate grounds, which is unlike any other winery tour. You'll walk through the garden, see the livestock as well as the owner's home. Each area is vastly different from the rest. From some views, you'll even forget that you're in wine country! read more

There are no words able to describe the beauty of this Estate. We came up here for a by appointment only tasting and was not disappointed. The setting was very intimate and personal. Not like those other conveyer belt type of commercial wineries. Our guide was not dry or snooty at all. Her was very fun and knowledgeable. The grounds were amazing. LOOK AT THE PICS I POSTED! I have only been to a handful of wineries in the Napa/St. Helena region but I have to say that Kuleto Estate is my absolute favorite. A few girlfriends and I didn't decide to come here until a week before our trip and they were very accommodating to our schedule despite their 'appointment only' policy. AMBIANCE (5+): I fell in love with the architecture and design of the place the minute we got out of the limo (warning: from the main road to the winery it's a pretty long and windy road). It is actually a fairly new venue but was built to mimic an old Italian city feel. There are two long tables set up outside for the tasting and the tour is a must. You see rolling hills of grape vines, a man-made river with a boat waiting for use, various scenic spots for photo shoots or an intimate lunch. My descriptions don't do the place any justice, so be sure to check out my photos :) But honestly, I never thought much about my future wedding venue until this place.. SERVICE (4): Service was great, although not over the top. It was our tour guide's very first time giving a tour but she was still very sweet and knowledgable. Besides our current tour group, it seemed quiet and mellow there. WINE (4): We did a wine and cheese pairing tour which was $40 a person, definitely on the pricier side compared to the other tastings we did, which did not include food. I have had wine that I loved more and liked less, but in combination with the perfect weather, beautiful scenery and great company, I was in a total state of euphoria. This was without a doubt the prettiest winery we went to. The views and the property itself were just fantastic. Our visit started off on a down note, when we kept buzzing at the gate to get in and no one ever answered. Finally quite a long time later, the gate opened. Our tasting started off a half hour late because of it. They have two tastings to choose from, the "Mixed tasting" and the "Red Lovers Tasting" Each have four wines. My husband and I each chose one of them so we could try all of the wines available that day. You are given your first pour and then led around the property on a brief tour by your host. I have to reiterate again, this was by far the prettiest winery we visited of the fifteen we went to. After the short tour, you are brought back to their patio area to try the rest of the wines. I know previous reviews mention a complimentary cheese plate. That is no longer offered. The wines were good, but not our favorites from this trip. We did buy the Chardonnay, the Sangiovese, the Zinfandel and the Syrah. I do recommend visiting. You certainly won't be disappointed with the scenery. read more

If you're going to enjoy some wine with a spectacular view of the Napa Valley, you might as well be on a mountain top at Kuleto Estate. Certainly not easily accessible or convenient, it's worth the winding drive to the estate and you won't be disappointed by the beauty of the property or the views. Still residing in a house on the grounds, restaurateur Pat Kuleto, famed for ownership or design of well known San Francisco landmarks such as Fog City Diner, Boulevard, and McCormick & Kuleto's, owned the 700+ acre property until 2009 when he sold it to Bill Foley, known to us Las Vegans as owner of the Golden Knights. The different mountain terrain and environments allow for the growth of many varietals with the cabernet being one of the winery's signature series. After booking our $45/person tour online and making the drive through the valley and up the winding road for our 11:45 tour, we were warmly greeted and given a brief history of the estate while having a taste of the Moscato. We had a very brief but informative tour of the property, maybe a couple hundred feet up the drive to see Mr. Kuleto's house and take some photos from our elevated vantage point. Your tour concludes with a tasting paired with some cheese. The sampling included a wide variety of wines with tastes of three different cabernets which had distinct flavor profiles described well by our guide. My wife isn't a big wine drinker so I consumed her samples also. The tour takes around 75 minutes and you pay when you are finished with options to join their club or to purchase a bottle. There were no tours directly after us so we stayed and chatted with our tour mates from Germany, who also dropped a little wine knowledge on us. Get there early because you don't want to be rushing through the winding roads. I would recommend Kuleto Estate because it provides a different setting from the valley vineyards and the views really can't be beat. read more

Kuleto is by appointment only and is a tour and tasting combined. They're situated on a hill so there are great panoramic views as you tour and taste. They have various animals along the tour route so that was fun too. The second half of the tasting is at the end of the tour and you sit at a big communal table on a patio. There is also cheese and crackers paired along with the wine. The wine is forgettable, but the experience is not. Don't come here for the wine, but come where for the view, experience, and memories. read more

Where to begin? This is truly a wonderful tasting adventure! If you can make it up the road - a tough and rugged trek up - you will absolutely love the Estate tour and tastings! The tour around the Estate - magnificent views of the valley! You feel like the King of the Hill up here! The tastings are outside with a view. Tastings are very well paired with cheeses and nuts. Now let's talk wines! I have had many from here from a friend that Wine Clubs with Kuleto. Excellent Reds! Excellent! Now i am trying their whites - excellent! Muscato - if you are a fan - excellent - I bought as a gift! I had to Wine Club with them, although we have 3 already - huge fan of their wines. Kuleto Winery came to us as a recommendation from The Beazley House and boy we're we happy they suggested it to us. The scenery alone is worth the trip. It's a two mile trip up the side of a mountain that overlooks Napa. It's probably one of the most beautiful winery landscapes I've ever seen. Our tour guide, master of ceremonies was Aaron. He gave us a great overview of the winery and wines while we enjoyed our lunch on the overlook. We also had a great tour of the grounds. This is not a drink & dash winery. Make sure you absorb it all in. Besides the wines (which are quite good), there's plenty to see here, so plan on spending some time once you get there. Plus, be sure to say 'HI" to Pilot... the $5,000 hunting dog. We can't wait to go back again. read more

I appear to be alone on this one... Beautiful winery, and far removed from the Silverado Trail. However, the $35 per person charge for the wine and tour seems expensive after tasting the so-so wines. My wife and I felt like the high charge and dog-and-pony show was only to encourage you to join the club. By the way, your tour and tasting fee is waved if you join! The whole thing felt contrived, like going to a timeshare presentation. There are better wineries in Napa, pouring better wine that don't waste 2 hours of your day. read more

Let's start with getting there. Don't trust your navigation system. For us, it told us we were there when we hit Neyer Winery. Keep going - quite a bit further. Go until you feel like you absolutely must have missed it and you should see it. Drive over to the gate keypad. There is a CB (walkie-talkie for you young folks) where you can radio ahead to let them know you re coming up. We didn't bother, but I think they really want you to. The gate code was right on the speaker area (Not sure what the purpose of having a security code is if you are just going to list the code on the keypad area, but hey, it's not my winery). Now up the steep hill. It's a 10 minute ride up at a reasonable speed, so leave time to get there. The drive up is.......disconcerting. You know those roads where it's about one and half lanes, and you pull as far over as you can when another car is coming, they do the same and it all works out better than you think? Well, this isn't like those. It's one lane. Period. There are small areas where there is a bit of extra dirt road area where you can pass, and you or your encountered friend may have to back up to make it possible to pass. They do have mirrors for some of the turns, but honestly they were so dirty and small by the time I could see if another car was coming, it would have been too late. Once up top, you are supposed to park past the main building. we parked right before it, and it's not like they are going to tow you (who is getting a tow truck up there?). The property is quite pretty and what Mr. Kuleto has done is impressive. A unique man. As for the wines, we found them to be, for the most part, quite average. We bought a couple but they still charged us for the tour and tasting. Overall, still worth it. read more

Stunning, just stunning. Atop a long and winding road sits Pat Kuleto's vision of what a Napa Valley winery should be. It's all covered from the breathtaking views to many outdoor entertaining areas to the infinity pool overlooking the Napa Valley. Our tour guide Steve met us, poured us a nice glass of red and out the door we went. It was fitting to enjoy a glass of wine while strolling through this beautiful estate. The views are postcard perfect. Rolling fields full of vines were overlooked at every possible place by patios complete with outdoor kitchens and pizza ovens. There is some really cool architecture and great design touches all around. This man knows how to live the good life. I looked on with envy as I checked out the many scenic destinations throughout the land that you could just plunk down with a goblet of wine and overlook your kingdom. I think my wife could sense my man crush and broke me out of my dream with a squeeze of the hand. The wine is fantastic as well. We left with a few bottles. There was a small fee for the tour and cheese and wine tasting, but well worth it. Can't believe it's taken me three trips to Napa to make it up here. Put it at the top of your list. read more

One of the pricier vineyards we visited, but hands down the most beautiful. It's a little bit off the beaten path, and be sure to prepare your self for the incredibly scary drive up a single lane road with steep drop offs to the top of a mountain (large hill?). The estate is BEAUTIFUL. Loved the tasting building and patio over looking the valley. Thought it was so cool that is a self sustaining property complete with sheep, turkeys, chicken, rabbits, horses, and the coolest vineyard dog I have ever met, Pilot! Our guide/pourer, Drew, was really cool and informative. I was shocked by how much I liked the wines we tasted. I am typically not a huge fan of sweet wines, but their rose and muscato were super dry and fragrant. I even lugged a bottle of the Muscato back home to DC. Would be a perfect place for a special event. They have lots of little areas for entertaining, big brick pizza ovens outside, etc. Highly recommend! read more

This is one my my favorite places to go while in the Napa valley. While you will need an actual map to get there as there is zero cell reception, I think that makes it even better. A stroll through the grounds of the estate with a glass of wine, enjoying the views and the Kuleto story, then seated on the terrace for the serious tasting. Definitely allow for 2 - 3 hours out of your day, with a 30 minute drive both ways. First appt is at 10:30 & we left about 12:30. Phenomenal views as everyone else has said -- essentially as far as you can see in every direction are vineyards, hills, Lake Hennesey, and Oprah's house. The Estate is a working and living farm estate, and they raise 90% (or so) of the food (including protein . . .) consumed on the premises. Nice wines -- very approachable varietals with decent price points ($25 - $40). Enjoyed the Syrah, which I"m usually not a huge fan of. Zin & Cabs were very nice. Did not taste any of the true reserve wines (even after we joined their club), so that's why only 4.5 stars. Watch out on the very narrow & windy road up from the gate. We had a nice size doe leap in front of the car, with a 6 pt buck behind her. Salute! read more

Bring your camera and expect to spend a couple hours at the very least. Owned by Pat Kuleto of Boulevard, Jardiniere, Farallon, Martini House and Fog City Diner fame, the winery includes his Villa Cucina Tuscan-style home. It's gorgeous. Our concierge at Andaz recommended us to visit Kuleto for a tour and I'm glad we did! This winery is so picturesque and beyond breathtaking. I don't think there are going to be many wineries that can top the view at Kuleto. The winery is open by appointment only, so you will have to book in advance. Kuleto is located in St. Helena near Lake Hennesy, so the drive is pretty far off east of the valley, but completely worth it because it's a scenic drive on the Silverado Trail. When you get to the gates, you will have to radio in to check in. The drive after the gate is about 5-10 minutes depending on how comfortable you are driving uphill in a narrow road. I definitely suggest packing a picnic lunch (that should include lots of cheese!) and purchasing a bottle after the tour, and sitting on the tables available overlooking the valley. I thought the tour itself was informative, especially on Kuleto's history of building the estate, but felt rather short. I wished we were able to see the actual fermentation process takes place and/or where the barrels were stored for the aging process...but I guess the view makes up for it. We had a glass of rosato at beginning of the tour, and at the end of the tour, we had a tasting of four of their wines with cheese pairings (Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon). The table set up is gorgeous and intimate as you are sitting under a pergola laced with vines with grapes hanging off...it's just beautiful. Do it!! We went on advice from a friend & I owe him a bottle for this suggestion. A beautiful drive thru a "no signal" canyon to a hilltop winery tour that was the best afternoon of our Napa wine week. The drive up a winding one lane road with occasional 2 way traffic was breathtaking. We were greeted by Laurel our guide and she was beyond wonderful. Gracious and expert. Our tour was my wife and me who are wine novices and another couple from Virginia, both in the wine biz. Laurel made both ends of the wine consuming spectrum feel like we spent our time well. David the winery's winemaking genius sat with us for an hour chatting over a wonderful glass of wine overlooking a beautiful valley covered in rows of manicured grape vines. I could not have had a better time. You must make a reservation but the groups are small and intimate. The grounds are 1 oh my gosh after another. A little off the beaten path, nestled on mountain is a pretty cool place to sip a glass of wine. You'll need it after the drive up there, cuz even though it is SO FUN (curvy and scenic), it's a bit of a trek. There is a cool story and an awesome view and even though I got a preview of both online, I really enjoyed the tour. Mike, our guide/host was fun and informative. So, the sad thing is that it's not a value. If you're on a budget or looking for the deals, you might not find it here. $40/pp is pretty steep for a fun, but short 30 min tour and the wine itself is not cheap. We happened to be on a tour with some awesome members of their wine club...so we lingered a bit. Wine club members can chill as long as they like, whenever they like (for free)! That might go on my list of "when I'm rolling in it" purchases. The alternative would be to convince your company to do an event there--they have 9 brick pizza ovens and it sounds like they can cook for a crowd. We sampled 6 wines (plus another sip from a bottle a wine club member bought) and I was pleasantly surprised by the chard, and their cabs. That being said, I think their wine is a bit unusual--which can be good or bad depending on your tastes. I personally enjoyed the wine and my friend liked them enough to drop160+ shipping to get two bottles of the India Ink 07 home. So if you have time, really like scenic drives, or just have a bit of spare cash--definitely schedule a tour. read more

WOW!!!! This place is AMAZING! We had a wonderful hostess Bree (sp). Prolly one of the most amazing wines hostesses I've ever met! The estate is simply amazing and I have to admit... I was jealous of the Kuleto homestead. I wish I had a place just like it. Unforch, I wasn't enthused about the wine itself, but I wasn't really in the mood for wine in the morning. If you can drop $35 pp on a "Rich & Famous" kind of tour, then do it... but if you're on a budget, I'd prolly hit up somewhere else... like Pride. read more

This place is breathtaking. The drive up is scary and not for the faint of heart. But when you get to the top you won't want to leave. It's appointment only, but so worth it. If you can, have lunch up there and just relax. You are at the top of one of the mountains. Plus the history around the vineyard is pretty cool. Order a bottle and just relax. A bit out of the way of the other wineries in the area, and the drive up to the top after getting through the gate is definitely a little scary - Very narrow windy uphill road with space for only one car to get through at a time, so if another car is coming down, be careful and look around the corners. That being said, once you get up there, the estate and views from there are the best you can find in the area, absolutely breathtaking. Great place for pictures. Unfortunately we were underwhelmed by the wines themselves and at 40$ per tasting per person, it is a bit steep for the quality of the wines. However, if you look at the overall package with the scenery, etc, we were glad we went once to check it out. read more

This winery was our favorite from our 3 day trip to Sonoma/Napa. As mentioned in another review, we also had some difficulty getting let in at the gate. No one was answering the buzzer, and you have no cell service so you can't call up. Finally a worker pulled up and was able to open the gate for us. The road leading up to the top is not for the faint of heart!! It is a 2 mike long, one lane road this is why they use the intercom system, so they can control the traffic. The tasting was very private, as we were with one other couple. The views were amazing and the wine excellent!! Our wine luggage was full so we were only able to buy 2 bottles, but we did join the wine club!! We would me definitely return and would recommend a visit to anyone!! read more

I had two bus loads--OK they were the short buses because there is no way a large bus could navigate the way to Kuelto's--of customers and executives from my company. I was in charge of all meals and entertainment for our first customer conference. My contact at Meadowood, Abby Kurtz, suggested we check out Kuleto's, and they would accommodate a larger crowd. Well we were not disappointed. It was a beautiful and clear day in late January, and my customers from the Northeast and Midwest were in heaven. Gordon was our Stand Up Philosopher and guide. We tried over 5 wines at different locations throughout the property--each one with amazing views. Gordon told us Pat's life story to date and he was fabulous. I am planning on having our customer dinner there next year--Pizza and wine--they have outdoor pizza ovens all over the property. Ultimate Cab tasting experience! Unbelievable views of Napa! This is probably one of my favorite spots in all of Napa. For love and romance or just a fun day exploring, this is a great place to be. I did the Ultimate Cab tasting experience. Though it's pricey it was worth every penny. It included 7 different cabs, so by the end of this 2 hour tour, driving down the windy mountain road was quite an experience. Thank god for DD's! read more

Gone are the days of 20 something years downing cheap beer and other alcohol that can also double as degreaser. Now are the fabulous 30's where your palate gets refined and you explore outside your usual drinks of choice and start exploring wines, this place is a good start. My friend is a photo enthusiast so looking online at the Napa wineries we looked for places that were excellent photo op's as well and fell in love with this place. I've been to Napa with my friend a couple times, and several times overall so know sometimes what you see on the website isn't as impressive when you see it in person but this place actually is beautiful and a photographers dream! Rolling hills that were mentioned in other posts is right on. The tour is educational but still interesting enough to keep your attention. The staff are excellent, knowledgeable, professional but yet personable, they definitely didn't come across as wine snobs. Playful dogs socialize as you sample tasty wine after tasty wine. I tasted and bought at a few places before so only took home a port but wow my friends and I loved it back home. Overall, no matter if your with friend(s), a first date, or forever date this place has it all for you. A perfect mini getaway from the hassle of the city. read more

Kuleto has a great lake and vineyard view. The drive to the winery is beautiful. However, the wines aren't great. I recommend this winery for one of the best Napa valley views, a nice romantic picnic, and lots of pictures. read more
