We ordered a variety of sushi including a sashimi salad. Well, when we ate the sashimi, it tasted of stale, old fish. It literally stunk! We complained to the sushi chef and you know what his response was? "The fish is not bad! You must not have good taste!!" We said to have him try it if he didn't believe us. He refused to. I understand that sometimes sushi restaurants can have a bad batch of fish, but I was appalled to receive such awful service and insult to my face. They did not discount us or even apologize. I still left a tip for the waitress, since it was not her fault, but I will never return. read more

Best Sushi place around Upland area. I have eaten at several and like this place the best. Had the Lobster Feast Amazing! Also, a fire boat, Delicious! As soon as we were seated we were brought edamame as an appetizer no charge. I was impressed from the get go. Only down side was that the edamame was cold instead of hot. read more

This is prime sushi! We started with mixed tempura, beautiful veggies with a light crispy breading. I definitely recommend. Shrimp tempura roll next, perfectly cooked shrimp not hard over cooked shrimp, perfectly soft with that same fluffy crunch. Wife could only eat cooked because she is pregos. I had the most delicious Uni with a quail egg on top yummy umami! Then a cucumber shrimp roll so crisp and refreshing this is the real deal. Last but not least two mixed oyster shooters with quail eggs sake and plum wine with some smelt roe and other aquatic compliments to polish it off I had both of course nothing raw for Wifey. Last time I was here (almost a year ago) my entire party was nearly finished eating before my food came & it wasn't a complicated roll. Thought I'd give them another shot but was disappointed again. First we couldn't get all our drink orders in before the waitress rushed off. One plate (a noodle dish) arrived before the appetizer. Our waitress dropped it off & apparently didn't think we needed plates. Halfway through our edemame the plate for our pods plate was taken - no replacement. We ate the noodles, appetizer and roll then waited 15-20 minutes before our 2nd roll, which was ordered with the first, arrived. So done with this place. :( read more

Sushi is excellent, sushi chefs are friendly, salads are yummy....service is crap! My boyfriend and I went in on a Wednesday night at about 8pm. We were seated and about 10 minutes later I had to ask a waitress for our drinks. Once she brought those I then had to stop her from running off so I could order a salad and veg tempura. My boyfriend fortunately only got sushi and his food came out sufficiently. So then I get the vegetable tempura and the tempura isnt even cooked. The vegetables were hard inside and the tempura was like eating paste. So after finishing my disappointing meal and my bf finishing his I asked another male server (as I hadnt seen the previous server in a while) to please bring the check....never happened. So we asked the sushi chef who finally got us taken care of. Like I said the sushi there was good but thats about it. If you want sushi in the area...I would recommend driving the extra couple miles to Roys Raw Deal because this place is terrible in comparrison. read more

I am pure Japanese. Of course I love sushi, sashimi, any sea food, and any Japanese food! I usually cook at home, because it tastes better than american "Japanese" restaurant.... except for sushi! Sushi is the only one dish I can't make at home. You need real fresh good fish. And my opinion is... I love Kuma sushi!!! To be honest, I didn't expect they are so good. But they are really good. Kuma sushi is one of the best sushi restaurant in caifornia. I can tell the fish is fresh. And if you want some particular Japanese food other than the menu, the manager (He is a pure Japanese.) cooks for you. And that tastes amazing! I am sure he loves to eat. The price is not as high as the other sushi restaurants. Try sashimi, oyster shoot. You can tell the difference from the other restaurant. I will go back soon! read more

My spouse and I went to Kuma Sushi for dinner on a Friday night - our first two mistakes. The restaurant was very busy and VERY LOUD. That did not make for a very pleasant gestalt and greatly detracted from the enjoyment of the food and the quality of the service. Public Disclaimer: I am hearing impaired and use high-quality, i.e., expensive, hearing aids. Not even these could filter out enough noise to enable me to understand what my spouse was saying, sitting next to me at the far end of the sushi bar next to the wall. So, I was in the Mall today at 1:30 PM and decided to stop in for lunch, hoping it would be less crowded. It was. But that didn't matter. No one ever gave me a menu. The sushi chef handed me a check-off list, which of course, has no descriptions of the ingredients of the rolls. So I checked off what I knew as my favorite: Freshwater eel roll. It took nearly 30 minutes to get my "eel roll". I use quotes here because there was not a thing in the roll that tasted like freshwater eel. Instead, it tasted like rotten smoked salmon of a very poor quality. And there was no eel sauce to be tasted. Being a good obedient middle class white boy, I said nothing. That was a mistake. I really should have returned the roll ater I ate the first slice. I checked the receipt to make sure I hadn't made a mistake ordering. Nope! Eel Roll. I can't see any reason to give Kuma Sushi am opportunity for a third strike. read more

HORRIBLE SERVICE. I created this Yelp account just to give this place the review it deserves. We walked in, sat for 10 minutes at least until I finally walked to the front to get my own menu. Then we were never given drinks until finally our sushi chef stopped a waitress for us. When she brought our drinks FINALLY, we asked for 2 bowls of miso soup. We never saw the waitress again. No soup, so drink refills, no plates were ever cleared. We had a stack of plates in front of us. It was ridiculous. It took forever to finally get our check, which was unbelievably overpriced. Especially after what we just went through. We were pissed. PISSED. We will never go back. read more

I don't know how anyone gives this place 5 stars. I have been here many times (it's next to my friends house), and the sushi is never better than good, and sometimes it is less than good. I want a place to be great and sometimes outstanding (it's sushi!). I have been here at least 20 times so far and the service has been fast every time. The food has always been superb. I have not yet used the bar but it sure looks like the happening place. My husband and I used to like this place, and the food is still ok. We were treated to lunch here today for my husband's birthday and he and I decided to eat lightly and we each ordered a spicy sashimi bowl, which normally comes w/ tuna sashimi, ebi shrimp, krab, avocado, and spicy sprouts. We'd had it here before (very similar to the version served at Ken's on Foothill). However, I wished I'd read the menu more thoroughly because when it arrived, all it had was the krab, avocado, and sprouts. I didn't want to make a fuss since we were being taken out, and I couldn't remember if maybe Kuma had a less fancy version of the sashimi bowl for lunch. And I didn't get a chance to see the check to see if there was a reduced charge for it. As we left, I grabbed a menu by the front desk to check and there was nothing in the menu that indicated we didn't receive anything but two over-priced bowls of imitation krab. We've been to Kuma Sushi numerous times, since we live in the neighborhood. Prior to our trip tonight, i would have given it 4 stars - good sushi and good service overall. Not great sushi, but pretty good. Unfortunately,tonight we had a nightmare experience with the food service that will make us seriously question whether we should ever return. Here's what happened: we arrived at 5:30. It was half full. We sat down and ordered around 5:35/5:40. Our drinks, soup and salad came right out. The sushi was another story. At 6:15 - half an hour after we got our drinks and soup/salad -- my daughter received to1 of the 2 rolls she had ordered. My husband had ordered a plate of sushi and I had ordered 2 rolls. Nothing for either of us. About 5 minutes later, one of my rolls arrived. Still nothing for my husband, so we shared our meager rations with him. Ten minutes after that - at about 6:35 - an hour after he ordered - my husband received his platter. Still no additional rolls for me or my daughter. Meanwhile, the sushi bar had filled up and people who had arrived way after us were being served. At around 6:45, as my husband finished his platter, we called our server over and cancelled the 2 additional rolls. We explained that we had waited over an hour and still had not received all of our food - and that since the timing seemed to be so random, we just didn't want to wait any longer, since we were not sure when the rest of our meal would arrive Meanwhile, people at the front door were leaving with takeout boxes. The server was very pleasant and apologized and brought us the bill, but she offered not explanation and did not send the manager over. I don't know what was going on, but this was one of the worst experiences of service from a kitchen that I've ever experienced in a restaurant. We had planned on purchasing a gift certificate for my brother-in-law when we were done with dinner, but decided not to, as we would not recommend this place to anyone based on the extremely poor service and lack of satisfactory explanation and apology. read more

We love Kuma in Upland. Thomas is a master sushi chef with a huge knowledge of different fish and preparation methods. For a while we were going every single weekend for about a year. I've always loved sushi but this sushi bar is very special. I love the sashimi bowl, the salmon skin roll and oysters, just to name a few. Their rolls are big and really delicious. Live clam, live scallop, all very fresh. Great salmon also. Its all good, in fact. They close at 3 p.m. and re-open for dinner at 5 p.m. Our giant ice cold Kirins are always ready and waiting for us. Been coming here since it opened. Used to be great. Two weeks ago I was going to edit my review from five stars to three Stars based on the fact that I sat at the sushi bar with one friend water never got filled it was a little bit busy yet I watched all kinds of other people get their order! Why?? I never saw a roll after my initial 1 for 25 minutes I considered the fact that they were a little busy and decided not to say anything. but tonight was the icing on the cake I showed up at 9:17 the door says they're open till 9:30 I called earlier because I was driving from La Verne and the freeway was packed. I asked what time do you close and they said 9:30. they refused to serve me the girl was rude at the register there were still people in there eating that if they would have ordered another roll would have taken it past 9:15 I asked if I could order to go and I got a snippy response so I guess I just won't be going here ever again. That one person that worked there was argumentative. There are multiple sushi places all over the city of Upland on Euclid and campus Arigato is very good Ken's is good Claremont Village has several good sushi places Kuma has shown me that they keep raising your prices but don't care about their service. Everything was delicious! They do not have AYCE. The only thing I had a problem with is that when I ordered the smelt eggs they put a lot of wasabi under the eggs & didn't say anything. They also did that with the 2 piece yellow tail. Besides that the food was great & they have great prices. They also give you a free appetizer. :) read more

Terrible service. The thin Asian Waitress has no idea what is going on. Usually decent until they get busy and then quality and service really suffers. We were in there the other day and the brought out my cut roll and it looked like a 7 year old made. Was really disappointed with the service and presentation. Finger prints on the plate and the rolls were cut and mashed together. I thought presentation was everything with Japanese food?? When I asked to see the Manager, the Waitress told me his was busy. Thats when I lost it. Too busy to speak with his customer for a minute about the shitty food and service. We live locally and eat there about once a week. NO MORE!!! read more

Kuma Sushi is pretty good. But there meat is dry. I've tasted better sushi. The only thing that I liked was the teryaki chicken. I think the way the cook, make, or mix their chicken is the best. But that's the only think i would recommend for anyone who were to eat there. One other comment is the service is excellent. that deserves five stars. read more

I just went here last night and i am really not one to complain about a restaurant but it was terrible!!! First off I went there with my 3 month old son and went straight to the bathroom to change him and NO CHANGING TABLE I almost just left right then and i wish i had but it was late and we were hungry, so i made do then the edamame was old brown and soggy the spicy tuna roll and the spicy salmon roll both tasted nasty like old warm (no refrigerated) fish Blah!!!! as for the service What Service? Took 40 minutes to get our order out, and then 3 tries to fix our bill. I ordered the 3 item dinner special, and they charged me for it, $17.95, and they charged me again for the third item. Second try, they charged it as a two item combo, full price for the third item. I politely asked to speak to the manager, but he wouldn't talk to me. If you can't order two sushi rolls with the dinner special, they should train their staff to say so. And, they don't know how to roll their sushi rolls, they fall apart. My husband and I love this place and I am so surprised to see some bad reviews as we have never had a bad meal here no has the service been anything but excellent. You cannot beat the price of the lunch combo and add some sushi on the side and you have a really excellent meal and they are very generous, you won't need dinner that night. We love the Red Devil Roll and Yellow tail Toro and we also love love love the Cajin Ono. Lunch for two can run over $68.00 but that's with tax and tip. The all you can eat places are o'k and they are cheaper but I like that even though I pay a little more we get some portion control and we get I think better food. On the lunch combo try the ribeye rare, its a extra two bucks but so worth it. We think Kuma is really a super place with very nice wait staff, we walk in about 1 o'clock and never have to wait for a table and can usually stay until after 2 p.m. and they have no problem with that.
