I've been to this business a few times and the overall service has been decent. My overall issue is the customer service. I tried to book an appointment and was told I can only book same day and walk in appointment due to a prior incident. I had an emergency during the prior incident and had to cancel last minute. What a miserable exercise of waiting until the hour was over. For both the masseuse and I, because after 10 minutes I didn't want to be in that room either. Perhaps I came in glutted having had an incredible massage by a masseuse based out of Pinole, but the difference of experience in less than 72 hours was painfully stark. I suffered a muscle spasm earlier in the month that left me out of commission. Having accumulated a good amount of points towards the end of the month that would have traditionally been used on yoga or spin class, I opted for this massage option. To think that I could have used those points for acupuncture instead. This massage was nothing short of a one-size-fits-all repetitive assortment of moves with no inclination to what their hands were targeting. It felt like they were just trying to push my muscles away to reach the bone with no regard to what area of the body they were in. The entire time I was praying that nothing would be done to re-spasm my lower back. The only relief that came about from this was walking out when the hour was over. And to think I had this entire review written in my mind halfway in, and at no point did their actions dissuade me from posting it. read more

This establishment has major issues with their booking/ scheduling process. Taking into consideration the current climate with COVID-19 you would think that companies would want to protect their clients and employees however this is not the case with KUME. I booked a couples massage and was not able to make it because of an illness and I had to reschedule. I was charged! I will not be using your services anytime in the future. read more

It wasn't great to be honest. They didn't give us an intake form, they went very light and originally told us only 30 min and then asked halfway if we wanted 60. Long story SHORT: The best part of this massage was the steaming hot towel towards the end to remove excess oil.... Kume has become very popular for affordable pricing but overbooks clientele, waiting area is crowded/no seating, not enough female massage therapists and front desk staff as been snobby/ aloof/ unprofessional/ inexperienced. Long story LONG: It's my birthday month/weekend and wanted a massage Friday after hard week of work. I'm a landscaper/professional gardener so have chronic pain/tension/knots. When I found Kume approximately 2 years ago, I walked in without appointment (probably not possible now unless you are ok with male massage therapist). After the half hour foot (communal setting) /half hour body (private room), the pains/tension were gone- I felt taller, looser, younger, no spaced out dizziness which I sometimes get from full body massage.... I thought I found my magic bullet. Eventually I purchased annual membership for discounted frequent visits, a wonderful deal. No longer wanting to fully disrobe, I was satisfied with foot massage, as they include neck/shoulder massage. It's true, finding a good massage therapist is trial and error. Once I found who I liked, she was never available, forced to settle for other people. I began to have anxiety going there, not knowing who was going to work on me. There is one woman who puts painful pressure on bones instead of muscles, so told front desk reception to make a note in profile - NEVER book me with her. When I called on Thursday to make a Friday appt, I made sure to discuss this with young lady on phone. All I wanted was a foot massage with a female but she said there were no females available except for full body. Because my work week was so strenuous, I was in need of body work- I accepted full body massage with a woman who I liked from a previous foot massage. As I checked in yesterday, I was told the phone convo wasn't noted. They said I had no appt with Wendy (Wendy wasn't even there), I had no female preference. ... They were going to make me wait until one was available (how long??) and tried to persuade me towards accepting a male (occasionally I open my eyes while having the foot massage and all the dudes in there seem sketchy, looking around the room, checking everyone out, whispering to each other, not focusing on the person they're working on). Then all of a sudden, Wendy rushes in. I received no chart to point out my problem areas. She didn't speak to me. After getting the room ready, Wendy lead me next door, down a hallway to a new-ish addition I had never been in. I commented on this and she had no clue what i was saying- BECAUSE SHE DIDN'T SPEAK ENGLISH. HOW IS IT POSSIBLE THAT PEOPLE ARE HIRED AND MAINTAIN THESE POSITIONS IN THIS LINE OF WORK WITHOUT BEING ABLE TO COMMUNICATE! ?!?? THIS IS MY BODY, THIS IS HEALING WORK- BODY WORK- ENERGY WORK! She left me in room to disrobe and lay face down. She came back in a few minutes and I told her I have a lot of tension in neck/shoulders and wanted to focus there.... she mumbled something about "a little... 2 minutes... it's ok..." Wendy proceeded to press on my neck, smashing my face into the head rest. I thought I might die there... My neck tension/pain is out of this world, it needs work to release tension but she created more. I told her it was too much, she said "it's ok".... then moved to the other side. Again, I told her it was too much... same thing- she smashed my neck/face into the head rest. It was so much pain, I remember holding my breath and envisioned leaving without paying. I worried the entire massage would be this way, but the opposite occurred. As she moved down the body rubbing excessive amounts of oil allover, no pressure was put into my muscles. It was a weak rub down. The best part of this massage was the steaming hot towel towards the end to remove excess oil. As I checked out in more discomfort than when I arrived, they told me manager approved a small discount- not nearly enough. I still paid over $50 for less than an hour massage and was not told of the Mother's Day special. I also tipped Wendy because I believe she thinks she's doing a good job but doesn't understand. I also wonder if she's paid well or has a choice.... I immediately went to Walgreen's for ibuprofen after this, muscle relaxer when I got home and iced my neck. Absolutely no relief from this experience. She created more pain and anxiety. I'm still in pain today. I recommended a friend to Kume a few hours before this experience but I won't recommend anyone else and most likely won't return. read more

First time here my back was serious sore. I was able to book an appointment last minute on a Sunday evening. The appointment was at 8 but I was called into my appointment at 8:30. I liked that the receptionist asked the type of pressure I wanted for my massage. I said medium to hard. I got a male massage therapist because there weren't females available. That didn't bother me. There was a language barrier but I felt like there was a lack of caring as well. He was going too soft and when I would ask for a little harder then he went unbelievably hard and he would snicker when I would say it's too hard. We did that back and forth and I just gave up. When he did my waist down it was a joke and I was being tickled but it seems like that is how it is everywhere. Trying to leave there and pay was jumbled with staff trying to collect their tips and lacked attention. I was really sore the next day but it went away the very next day and I believe he got naughts out. I am told that you are suppose to be sore the next day. I have had better cheap china town massages for $25. $65 for a full body massage. I am going to try another place next time I am in need of a massage. Went in for a massage after a race I had, so I came for a body massage with the hope they could focus on my legs. The website said the first 10 minutes would be consultation, so I assumed I could talk to the masseuse about my preferences on top of what I specified when I booked. The masseuse didn't ask anything or give me time to make requests, and just got into the massage, so I assumed he had read my profile. Next thing I knew the massage was over and the places I wanted to target weren't touched at all. I understand the appeal of this place. They often take last minute massages and in short amount of time and charge very little. The massage was mostly good but the therapist was obviously overworked. Sweating and seeming rushed and just exhausted... I definitely will find a private massage therapist from now on. This was clearly a mistake. The massage was a 4ish star experience and the reception maybe a one star, if that, so I'm rounding up. Let's be clear, Kume is not an exclusive spa in Napa experience but more sort of a "spa for the commons." It's a bit run down and unless you've booked bodywork, you'll be getting your limbs rubbed in a chair with several other people also getting their limbs rubbed in the same room, which is fine when you know that's what to expect. It's a good massage for what it is. That said, my experience with reception was notably awful. I called today to book a same day appt. within the hour of my call that I knew would be low traffic. Given that I have an infant at home and another baby on the way, getting to do anything by myself let alone for myself is a rare treat. The receptionist felt it necessary to tell me in response to, "I am leaving shortly and should be there on time, barring finding parking around Grand Ave." (which sucks for those who know parking around Lake Merritt because it always sucks) that I'd be charged half the cost of service if I was late. Ok, I'd get mentioning a late fee if I was booking weeks in advance and my showing up late would mean delaying someone else's coveted appointment with a therapist but that's not how this place operates and I just said I was heading over. I was literally the only customer when I arrived. I was underwhelmed. Reception was just as underwhelming when I arrived and got stared down by two women, no smiles and I don't even recall if one said "hi." (?) Felt like an intrusion on their precious phone time that I had deigned to walk in. I've received warmer receptions from my obgyn's office. Kindness costs you nothing, people, and if you're working at a spa, it's part of your freaking job. I said I was the 10:45 appt. - having gotten off the phone with this person *less than* 12 minutes ago - and she still had to ask my name and check the schedule (like we hadn't just spoken) even though the entire place was empty. Seriously. Kind of stupid. It was a very offputting and I'm embarrassed for management that this is the face of their spa services. They often start late, Waste time "waiting" for you to undress (like 10mins) leave in the middle of the massage (another 10 mins) and finish early of your scheduled time. I've been here several times and each time I walk away thinking "meh, that was just okay" at best, often it's worse. Why do I return? Because it's close and convenient. I had a therapist fall asleep (3 times) during one of my sessions, others don't really know what they're doing, the massage is almost rehearsed and not specialized for my needs. The body scrub is always good. But this new $5 "Covid" or "PPE service fee" is totally BS. There's no way the mask and gloves and using a humidifier costs $5 for each customer. Shockingly I've been here a couple times and haven't reviewed this place. I was desperately in need of a massage and was in the neighborhood which worked out perfectly!! Going to school at Holy Names makes the jaunt down here to the Grand Lake area very easy. These are my old stomping grounds being that I was born and raised in Oakland, went to Lakeview elementary and Our Lady of Lourdes (on the other side of the street). Even worked at the Grand Lake Theatre many moons ago and Kwik Way (which is now Merritt Bakery)! Just being here takes me back to simpler times - I mean - I was a tween and teenager so definitely life was easy!! Anyway, back to the review - I opted for the 75 minute delight - 25 minute back and foot massage and then 50 minute full body. They recently relocated from down the block and so this building is nicer and larger. If you've been here in the past, you'll be pleasantly surprised at their upgrades. I am a member (you pay a yearly amount) and that gives you a special member price on all days and an EXTRA DISCOUNT Tuesday through Thursday - hello!!!! My 75 minute heavenly delight cost me $48! That's a steal and worth it and double. The masseuse (didn't catch her name - oops) was great. She made sure to check in on the pressure and followed the instructions I gave prior to getting my massage (being that I recently had shoulder surgery). I feel like a new woman - not like the woman I was wasn't good enough - but improvement is always welcomed. Honestly, the aches and pains feel less intense and the pain in (both) my shoulders feel more tolerable. I am sure you won't be disappointed whether you join or just come for a one time visit. I love going to Kume for foot reflexology: their rates are reasonable, their foot massage is amazing and they can usually fit you in on short notice. The masseuse's I've had have been very strong so you have to be aware if you say you want a lot of pressure they can deliver! The 45 minute foot massage includes a nice back & neck massage first while your feet soak and then they move you to a plush comfy chair with blankets for the foot massage. I was out with my bffl Aric running errands for his bar and after a ridiculously HUGE lunch down the street, we were feeling a bit uncomfortable and needed to relax before we continued our shopping day. Aric asked me if I knew of a reputable massage place and I suggested the Foot Spa and Tea Bar. We were concerned they might not be able to take us as a walk-in but to our surprise we were greeted in seconds and taken back to our comfy chairs so that we could soak our feet and begin the treatment. My service professional was Tom and I loved him. He was not too rough and not too gentle. I guess I could say he was perfect. Tom began by gently helping me sit on the ottoman and placing over my lap a large pillow and warm, soft blanket while I soaked my feet. He began by relieving the tension in my neck, one side at a time, never rushing anything. Then my back and my shoulders. Tom moved me over onto the big, velvety, comfy chair quite gingerly, and I began to relax in my new position. Tom covered me with this chocolate colored blanket, sat across from me and began to massage my tired feet. He was super gentle and wonderful. I wish we had gotten more than one hour--I could have sat all day with Tom and his magic hands. There was construction happening next door that seemed to irritate my companion; however, Tom was such a magician that I never even noticed the noise. We were also there early in the day, so I am sure that this would not happen at night, nor will it last much longer. I have actually never heard anything at the Foot Spa besides soothing music. 3.5 I am a bit torn on this place. The spa was lovely and smelled great. But when I went to the bathroom I saw the laundry room lined with men sitting on their phones waiting to be call upon. Nothing wrong but ruined the vibes a bit. I got a scrub and massage. The scrub was great. You get naked and sit in the personal sauna. The scrub bed, sauna and shower were all in the same room. It was nice. I was scared a man was going to do my scrub but it was a super nice lady. She explained everything very well. And explained it again and again. I know there was a lot of complaint about instruction but her was very good. 4/5 on scrub. I am used to Korean scrubs washing my hair and giving me a facial. This one didn't do that. Massage was bad. I went to the room which was nice but the man who came in to do the massage. It just wasn't very good. read more

After going here a dozen times, it is way past due for me to give The Foot Spa a Yelp review. I love The Foot Spa for so many reasons. Before working out is my favorite time to go. I get a much better workout when I do reflexology first. After working out is my other favorite time to go. It just feels so good. My friend Theresa and I went to the Reflexology Institute in Beijing in 2007. They have a very distinct way that the professionals in China care for and serve their patrons. The professionals at The Foot Spa take care of their clients in the same manner that you get greeted and treated at the headquarters in China. The Foot Spa, they do Reflexology right! The loose leaf tea service The reflexology (neck, shoulders ... then feet, legs, feet). The language barrier (unless you are Chinese; they are from China) The pain The relief The water Considering this place has only been open a few months, it is amazing to see the following they are creating from the beginning. This is a little slice of heaven in Oakland to go to for healing and caring for yourself ... all the way to those little fibers of your being. Ouch! Remember that sometimes it can hurt. And, often in life, you have to go through the rough stuff to get to the good stuff. I had an amazing experience. It was my first time there, so I got the first time deal. I went for the one hour combo and it was such a good choice! I added the foot soak for $6 as well, but I probably could have done without this. The man who massaged me was excellent and he checked in with me frequently to see if I was okay, needed more pressure/less pressure, etc. Procedure: They take you in a common room for a foot massage. For me, this started off with a foot soak while they massaged my shoulders (I had a pillow to lean on). Then, in that same room, they had me sit on this very comfortable couch while I had a pretty thorough foot massage with oil. Hot towels were used to clean my feet and legs. Then they took me to a private room for the traditional-style massage where you disrobe and lay on a massage bed. Nice environment; again comfortable. Massage really focused on the areas I needed most, then ended with a head and temple massage. Soooo relaxing! read more

I'm upset about the service including the customer service that I received. I was told when I was checking in but I was paired with a woman who I specifically have asked not to have since having a horrible experience previously there. When I asked if I could reschedule for another provider due to another provider not being available at that time I was told I would be charged half of the service. I was then told by a receptionist if I was not satisfied with the service I could speak with the manager to negotiate something new. I was not happy due to having to put myself in a situation that made me more tense when I had gone to a massage due to release some anxiety. Unfortunately the massage was horrible the woman used her nails just as the previous women did and was also sticking her fingers in my ear. This massage made me more tense than I had come in previously and so I had the interaction. I am also upset because I was told the manager would reach out to me by Wednesday. The manager refused all calls and would not return my emails. Unfortunately there have been a few situations here that have been very unpleasant. I originally loved the services but it feels like it has gone downhill. I do enjoy supporting local businesses but I don't like feel pressured into services I feel uncomfortable with. read more
