I got a scrub here and ended up with deep scratches and a large abrasion/road rash on my upper sternum. It was especially painful with the coconut (salt?) add-on. crying face. I've had one scrub here and plenty at Imperial and Pearl Spa and I've never been hurt before. I contacted Kume twice with pics and never heard back. It's a bummer to get scrubbed before a beach vacay only to have a red scabby chest that needs to be kept out of the sun, so be warned. AVOID THEIR SCRUBS read more

I was trying to treat my aunt who has recently come to this country and I was trying to gift her a relaxing day at the spa which she has never received in her life. I called to request a one hour combination for reflexology and foot and body massage. I informed the receptionist that my aunt does not feel comfortable with a male and prefers a female therapist. In her culture it is very uncomfortable and unknown to be touched by an unknown man in this way. When we arrived for our appointment we were told that there are no female therapists and when I said my aunt does not feel comfortable with a male touching her body but she could possibly be ok with just a foot massage the receptionist rudely told us that she has no choice and the therapist will be massaging her calves and thighs. She then explained because an hour doing the same area is too repetitive for the therapist and painful for their wrist. I asked so then can we reduce the time to 30 mins to have only feet touched and she said I will still be charged the full hour. I asked to cancel our appointments and she said that's not possible and I will still be charged. Your facility is demonstrating restrictive policies and unwillingness to accommodate client's needs and preferences. I can report you for discrimination and harassment due to our awful experience. I would expect an apology or compensation coming from your management if not your receptionist. read more

I had a massage with a male staff member last week. When I had called that day, I asked if the person doing my massage was a certified massage therapist. I was told by the receptionist that "all of the people who do massages are certified massage therapists." This did not seem to be case. Firstly, my massage person didn't speak English so I was not able to communicate my needs to him at all. Secondly, there was no certificate on the wall stating he was licensed in any way. That's fine- but please do not have your receptionists falsely stating that the staff are CMT's because I would have just gone elsewhere. This person did the best he could and I appreciate that, but he was not trained as a massage therapist at all. I tried to ask him to work more on my shoulders, but either he didn't understand me, or he had to stick to a certain algorithm. The massage was the kind of place you'd find in the Outer Richmond in SF. Again, all of that is fine, but don't falsely advertise that these are CMT's because some people have legitimate musculoskeletal issues they are trying to address with trained professionals. read more

I don't think the person knew what they were doing and/or completely phoned it in. He used a ton of oil and lotion on my feet. We have the membership so 1 hour massage + Korean scrub is only $100. This also includes 15min infrared sauna. I think this is to help soften the skin before the scrub. If you sign up for the yearly membership the discount will pay off if you go 3 times a year. For the Korean scrub, you will get completely undressed (they give men shorts but nothing for women) and a lady will scrub the dead skin off from head to foot. It's a little strange the first time you do it but you'll get used to it :). They will then pour milk over the skin to soften the skin. I don't know if the milk actually does anything but my skin is always soft and smooth afterwards. If I could I would go every month to scrub the hard to reach spots on the back! Make sure to arrive early, as parking in the area is extremely limited, especially if you go on Saturdays when the farmers market is open across the street. But then it's nice to have a scrub/massage and then walk around the market afterwards. As an aside the lake merit farmers market is the largest in Oakland so I recommend checking that out too! read more

But after 2 failed attempts through Classpass for an appointment I gave up. 1 time I wasn't even on the books and had already drove from SF and the 2nd, they cancelled me for some reason off the calendar while I am trying to check-in. I can't speak to what the system would be like without having tried to connect through a third party. Tried this place with a Groupon and thought it was sufficient for what they offered. It is not deluxe in the rooms or the treatment but clean. My biggest issue was they skipped my friends ten minutes in the sauna (and when she pointed it out) gave her the minimum 30 minutes of scrub and "didn't charge the $5" service fee as consolation. So her ~ 60 min treatment was only around 30minutes and we sat in the lobby waiting for our friends one hour massage to be done. read more

Groupon got me through these doors. I was excited to learn they offered Korean scrubs. That's when I decided to give this place a test run for a scrub and massage. Okay... so, I've been to another Korean massage and scrub place in San Leandro, that experience is 360 degrees different. The level of scrub here was lack luster and leaves you feeling like you could had done a better job on your own. When I got called in, it was a dude that walked me in. I was surprised because I was expecting a lady to do my scrub and massage. But it ended up to be 2 different people for massage and scrub. I didn't know that. The massage by Andy was wonderful! He was able to elbow all the right places that needed attention. The shoulder, arm and hand massages was so freaking good!!!! After he was done, I had to get dressed up to go to my next service, the scrub. It goes downhill from here... The scrub room looks like the kill room from that show, Dexter. There's a clean rubber table, tiled walls and floors with bright lighting which makes for an excellent murder scene... Sorry for the gore but I've been watching Dexter marathons on Netflix and that's what I thought of when I walked into that very sterile looking operating room. I walked across the hallway and undressed (AGAIN) in the wet area and left my clothes in a basket that was way too close to the rubber table. They first stick you in a human sized convector oven (sauna) and cook you for 10 minutes. Afterwards, the lady in a tank top and knickerbockers asks you to lay naked on the rubber bed. Hot water is splashed onto you and she scrubs you down for 10 minutes. She obviously didn't do a good job because I didn't see a single blob of dead skin on the table. A good scrub would had gone everywhere, even in the cracks of your hoo hoo, your ha ha and the wazoo! And dead skin would had been everywhere like ants lining up to a sticky lollipop. Once the scrub is done, they squirt warm milk all over the front side of your body and lightly rub it in. There's a shower on the other end of the sterile room but no soap, no shampoo. WTH. I was only supposed to rinse myself off with water?!? Lame. There should had been a dispenser with soaps! Then I had to dress up again in that same wet area, which was challenging because there were no chairs or a dry spot to stand on. I had to be careful not to let my clothes hit the wet floors. Here's how I see it... 4.5 stars for Andy's massage 1 Star for Carmen's scrub 2 Stars for front desk service (They were 15 minutes late for our appointments and didn't explain the process for the massage/scrub) I know I will never come back for a scrub. Maybe they should stick to what they're good at, feet reflexology and massages. Other notes: Theres only have 1 scrub table. Parking on the weekends is a challenge. What a let down! I came in for a Korean Scrub + Massage combo and left severely disappointed. Their Korean Scrub is false advertising and very misleading -- nowhere close to what a scrub should be! Just because you use the scrub mit, doesn't make it a Korean scrub. I sat in the sauna for 10 minutes before, which was nice. The scrub itself lasted maybe 15 minutes and was rather sloppy. My skin didn't shed off like it should have, many areas were missed, and it just hurt. They use Dr. Bronner's soap and put coconut oil on you after. No milk and honey wash at the end, as advertised. I basically just got a bath. I was looking forward to it all week and left feeling like I got ripped off. After this, I put on a robe that smelled like mildew (which ruined the spa experience) and walked to the massage room. The massage was alright, but similar to other reviews, felt like it was done by an unlicensed masseuse. Wasn't a full-body massage and was painful at some points because she was mostly using her elbows. 2 stars because the sauna was nice, CBD gummies were appreciated, and the tea/water was good. For a similar price, you can go to a different spa and have a much better experience. I'd recommend you go elsewhere. read more

Its a pretty spa with some cool amenities but the scrub was the worst scrub I have received (also the only bad one Ive ever received, usually they're always great at korean spas). I really wanted to this place more highly, but the massage I received was one of the most inept ones I've ever experienced. I've been to many Chinese style reflexology type places in California and in Asia, but the man assigned to me didn't seem to know what he was doing -- he burned my back with the hot towel, kneaded at me roughly without skill and oddly, did not touch my feet at all even though the name of the place is a "foot spa!" He was working his way down to my feet, but then slapped my legs and announced "done!" I didn't want to argue with him.I came with two other friends and they did not receive any attention to their feet, either, even though we'd all circled it as areas we'd like focus on. I heard yelling through the door and my friends reported that the front desk attendant was berating two of the workers and saying she was sending them home. I enjoyed the Korean body scrub and would have rated that alone as a four. Though the attendant invited me to shower afterward, there was no soap or shampoo and getting dressed was awkward -- the floor of treatment room was soaking wet -- there should be a separate dry changing room. When I go to a massage place, my goal is to relax. I have achieved this goal. I purchased a gift card from groupon at a good deal. I purchased a body scrub and massage session. Started with body massage, too bad my massage therapist couldn't speak English, therefore, I couldn't explain which area needed to work on. I do not expect fluently, but it would be best if he/she understands basic communications. That's the only drawback, therefore, I gave 4 stars. Then, a lady brought me to a scrubbing room. I love the experiences. She was gentle, super informative. I wish, they have a hairdryer. My hair was totally wet and I forget to bring a comb. It's quite okay! Many people gave an awful review. I'm not quite sure what is the purpose. I hope they do not expect the owner to call and give a complimentary service. If you purchase a good deal from Groupon, appreciate what you got! if you want to have a full blast, super smooth body spa, please go to higher end establishment such as William Burke, Nordstrom or others. I first stumbled upon this spa a few years ago through a Groupon deal, which if you haven't been here, the Groupon is a great deal to start with! Since then, I've been coming here a few times a month if I can. They're perfect for deep tissue massages, they also have therapists that also do regular pressure as well. I ended up here because I saw the place referenced in a local "Best of" survey and was intrigued by the combo package on the website of 1 hour foot massage and 1 hour full body massage, so I booked for a Friday night. Upon entering the lobby, I was wondering whether I was in the right place -- it looked more like a jewelry/gift store than a waiting area. I did get a cup of lovely herbal tea -- and after waiting just past my appointment time, around :05, I was introduced to my masseur. He wordlessly lead me to a large, dim room full of large overstuffed armchairs with ottomans and some swagged curtains between some of the chairs. There was no coat check, so I had to pile up all my outer wear on the table between chairs. I was surprised that the masseur had me start off seated, leaning forward over a bolster. He worked on my shoulders, back and arms -- a lot of pinching motions. This is all going on while fully clothed -- I thought at first it was a bit strange, and wondered whether I would have an hour of seated massage, fully clothed before he moved onto my feet. Really - having a full hour of attention devoted to my feet was the big draw for me in this package. Finally, at :30, my masseur had me sit down and started working on my feet and calves. He covered my shoulders and arms with a soft fleecy blanket that my cats would have immediately confiscated as their own. My masseur kept checking the clock. Periodically, he would get up and leave without explanation. He did use a lot of hot towels on my legs and feet which was nice -- I thought perhaps he had towels in a warmer and was waiting to go get more? I noticed that all the other masseurs employed different techniques: one guy did really noise tapotement, and others looked like they were effleuraging endlessly. Some of the clients were relaxed with eyes closed, and others looking at cell phones. I saw some masseurs standing behind the chairs of the clients to work on their shoulders. I also noticed that a couple of the other masseurs (not mine, fortunately) kept rubbing their eyes, noses and one guy even kept sticking his finger in his ears to itch them -- without washing their hands afterward. None of the masseurs wore gloves (like my massage in Mexico City last December). Right on the hour, my masseur indicated with a slap to the soles of my feet, that we were done here. He brought me some crocs and indicated that I should follow him as he carefully collected all my items, leading me to a private room with two massage tables, indicating I should get undressed and asked me to start face down. I noticed the room was chilly and the other table had a control for a heated pad, but I couldn't find one on my table. My masseur kept me warm with more fleecy blankets but the room still had a bit of a chill. Overall, the massage was a B or B - -- there was a LOT of downward pressure on my spine while I was face down that made it impossible for me to draw a breath. I tried to explain that but my masseur did not seem to understand. Also - he incorporated fingernails a lot in a way that was not enjoyable. When I went to massage school - we were told not to ever push down on the spine in that direction (bad risk for injury, not to mention damned uncomfortable now that I've experienced it and not at all relaxing -- not even my chiropractor has done that). My masseur also did some more pinching along the erector spinae (the muscles that are on either side of your spine) -- grabbing, squeezing and holding them in a way that did nothing for my relaxation or therapeutically as far as I can tell. After spending 40 minutes on the back of my body -- loads more hot towels were used, thankfully, since he used a vat of lotion to grease me up, he had me turn over. I got a bit of attention on the arms and lower legs (nothing on the quads, hips or ribs). Then he did a very quick head massage with about a minute on my face and right on the hour - we were done. Though this wasn't an awful experience -- it wasn't a great experience. I didn't enjoy the large room full of people and visibility into the poor hygiene and varying techniques of the other practitioners (who were all men -- were women practitioners in another equally large room?). Too much lotion, inconsistent technique (maybe this is Korean technique?), and not entirely relaxing. And -- not a full hour on my feet! That was a bit disappointing. When I left, there were half dozen practitioners standing by the front desk, I later realized, waiting for their tips. That was a bit of strange "behind the scenes" exposure. read more

This did lower my expectations, but I still wanted to redeem my gift card. Unfortunately it was a pretty horrible massage. I had asked for a Swedish massage, but received something completely different. The massage was really rough and sharp, and the masseuse had long nails that ended up scratching me. The waiting room and host were very nice. I was disappointed with my experience. I found the room to be stuffy and the method of keeping me warm and covered was uncomfortable. I did not appreciate the heating blanket nor a cover that was heavy and not soft. I requested a firm massage. My therapist was petite and pleasant but not capable of a firm massage. Finally, I was very surprised and equally disappointed to find out only when I Wente red the room that I was expected to keep my underwear on. I've been a member here on/off since they were Foot Spa Tea Bar. The extra mid week discounts really go a long way. I see Tony fairly regularly and always get a great bodymassage. He has good attention to detail and my shoulder area and back get the work they need. I like that the place is clean with a cute gift shop, waiting area, customer service is warm and welcoming, and the rooms are relaxing with comfortable tables. Tipping the therapists well is a wonderful thing to do so I make sure to go above the suggested amount. Grateful they're in my neighborhood! read more

Experienced my first body scrub here which was a lot of fun, BUT.. the room smelled of mildew and had used sponges laying around in the corners. The floor was wet and filthy. When I expressed my concerns tHe staff simply said "it's okay it's okay." The "suna" was tiny and not at all relaxing. My Maggie's was HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE. Worse than the scrub. A very unprofessionally dressed man gave my massage. Using mostly his elbow and there were times I could feel his HAIR on my back due to how lax he was giving the massage. I asked for added pressure, as I was paying for a deep tissue, and this guy uses that same pressure along my neck and spine. I was in pain for about a week afterward. And wished I had only gotten 30mins rather than 90. Not to mention I had to walk out in the street in nothing but a robe because for some reason they have a random separate place for massage that is not connected to the building. Horrible. read more

Simon did a great job! I have chronic pain and severe muscles spasms throughout my body. I was desperately in need of bodywork and had been to Kume a few times in the past so checked out their site to see if they had appointments available. Fortunately they did and they had my record from several years ago when I last received services. Booking was easy, they texted reminders and updates and the receptionist was informative, pleasant and welcoming. I was is spasm when I went to Kume. Simon was able to identify the areas that were is spasm and release the knots. He worked on my left shoulder and hip, which had been giving me the blues and I released an audible sigh when the muscles finally relaxed! I never told him which areas were bothering me, he expertly identified the problem areas and kneaded the kinks out. The hot stones and aroma therapy were amazing as well. My sister and I went together and both rated our masseurs sub-par. I am a seventy-four year old senior with arthritis so I was pleased when the receptionist gave me a body chart to indicate where I wanted the technician to focus. That chart was totally ignored. I circled my shoulders, neck,head lower back, knees, hands, and feet. My first warning came with his first touch. For some reason he pressed his knuckles really hard up and down my spine which was painful. He spent the majority of time on my back and shoulders, massaged the back of my shoulders but not the front where I have my pain, massaged my forehead and temples but not the rest of.my head. slide his hands up and down my legs less than a minute and was through! He did a good job on my the back of my shoulders, back and feet, but barely touched my neck. Didn't touch my knees until I could tell he was winding down the massage and I asked him to. He gave me a minute. Never touched my thighs. I just experienced the worst massage of my life. Not worth $85.00 My sister' masseuse wasn't much better, again major time spent on back until she asked him did he intend to rub her legs. No neck massage, thighs or knees nor front of her shoulders. My friends and I came here for massages and Korean scrubs. I've been here before with my husband a few years ago for the Korean Scrub. I liked it so much that I recommended coming again.
