Though I'm a fan of the competition a few streets away, I tried this restaurant because the $17.95 price point for all you can eat was great. The atmosphere is new modern and clean. The food was acceptable, the sushi was presented beautifully but the service was lacking. I never got a refill on my water and once we got our food we really never saw our waiter again until we flagged him down for our check. So even though the food was decent and the price was good, I wouldn't return to this restaurant unless I was coming with a larger group of people because there is a lot more room in this restaurant. read more

I have heard many things about Kumo and finally ventured in to see the hype. First off, I am a huge sushi fan and can also eat a lot of it! I usually go to Sushi Palace in either Edison or Somerville, but their quality has been sliding and service has been eh. That being said Kumo has now gained my trust. I went to Kumo last Friday night around 8:30 PM for their unlimited sushi deal. The prices were similar to Sushi Palace, but the quality and atmosphere was much better. Additionally, the portions and variety of sushi were impressive. Between my boyfriend and I we 7 different roles, kani salad, seaweed salad, miso soup, and some other appetizers. Everything beat my expectations and I will definitely be going again this upcoming week! read more

Love this place my friends and I go all the time. The sushi is reasonably priced and it's very good quality. The rolls are bigger than other sushi places I've been to but aren't overly expensive. The only reason I wouldn't give 5 stars is because the serves tend to take forever getting to you which is annoying. And the presentation was breathtaking. Clearly the sushi chefs have a great sense of artistry! The ambiance is glamorous with a huge crystal chandelier on the ceiling that reflects what seems like millions of particles of light! We wanted Sushi on Valentines night 2/14/15 and didn't have reservations, and because of our bad experience last time at Kumo Bistro with 3 hour delays, we decided instead to go to Sushi Palace. But, when we arrived at area, the only parking we could find was right next to Kumo. I told my wife, "I'm not sure I can tolerate another long wait at Kumo but lets give them one more try, were here." So I went inside and talked to the manager at Kumo and explained the terrible experience we had several weeks ago, and he said they had hired more help staff and cooks, was very apologetic, and he was able to seat us right away. This experience was great, fast service, great sushi, and 100% better then our last. Based on this trip, we would come again. I would definitely talk to the manager first to confirm they are serving fast and don't have a long wait for food service. read more

I've never made a yelp review before but I've been to Kumo many times and it's always been good. Their lunch special of $14 all you can eat cannot be beat by Somerville's other 4 sushi places. HOWEVER, what made today's trip special was the music, specifically whoever was in charge of the playlist. They usually play the current popular radio songs but today their playlist included old time jams such as "Fabulous" by Sharpay and Ryan in High school musical 2 as well as my favorite song ever "FORMATION" by Beyoncé which I saw live at MetLife stadium this past August on her world tour . the staff is horribly rude. once we entered we were not greeted but told where to sit like we were dogs. we brushed it off and when asked what we wanted to eat, she was very dismissive of everything and impatient with us. One of me and my friends were sharing a plate and I had informed the waitress we would be sharing the entree. the waitress then said "your sharing right?" and I responded with "yes we are". she walks away and our food takes FOREVER to come out despite the place being a ghost town. When she comes out with the food she brings two separate entrees for me and my friend when we said we would share an entree. she storms off and says "your still paying for the salad" (is usually brought out first), which we did not eat. she took back the extra entree with the uneaten salad and tried to charge us for it. When bringing her back to the table saying we weren't gonna pay for it she stormed off once again but yelling "OH MY GOD". The service was disgusting, the food was disgusting, the attitude from all the staff was disgusting and the attentiveness was lacking. This place clearly does not know how to keep a business thriving. At the end when bringing the check, tip is added to the bill automatically. The environment of this place was bitter. What the hell happened to this place? My wife and I have been going here since we moved to the area 3 years ago. Food was always good, as was service, and the price for the all you can eat was always fair. Went here last night with 8 people. The service was absolutely horrendous! Half the table never had their order taken (had to tell 3 different people). This is a BYOB.....I asked to keep the wine on ice.....I'm still waiting for said ice, drank the wine room temp which I never do. My wife ordered three veggie rolls and specified "brown rice on the veggie rolls" with pen written in. A server comes over and says "we no longer offer brown rice is it ok with white rice?". Not a big deal, but not sure why you would stop offering brown rice in a sushi restaurant??? No biggie, we stick with white rice. My wife leaves to go to the ladies room, another woman comes over who basically knew 4 words of English. She is pointing to the order sheet specifically to my wife's order and says "we no have". I said "yes they already told us no brown rice, so white is fine". Her reply "we know have".....I say "are you telling me you don't have vegetables either?". She says "yes". 30 minutes go by and I call over another woman and say "do you have vegetables for vegetable rolls?" She says "of course we do". I recap what happened and she apologized and went and got me the rolls for my wife. When we sat down, we were at a long table. My wife and I were at one end. We filled out the all you can eat sheet and were waiting for the other side to fill out theirs. Unbeknown to me, they took our sheet and never bothered to come back to the other side of the table for 30 minutes! The other side then ordered, yet they got their food first!! I ordered three rolls, only got two. It took us 2.5 hours for me to get two rolls and my wife to get her 3 rolls without the brown rice she wanted. I have no clue if this is under new ownership or what, but I'll be going to sushi palace right around the corner from now on. So sad as I loved going here and would go 2-3 times a month! read more

Tried this place tonight, just two of us. Did not want the "All You Can Eat" sushi and after pushing us a little to choose it, they relented and showed us to a table and brought menus. The place is nice enough looking and the staff were friendly, and then it went downhill from there. The sodas we ordered were flat and had too much soda syrup. We asked for a seltzer, in an attempt to get the mix better ourselves, but the seltzer was fairly flat as well. We placed our order quickly, the soup came out immediately... and then we waited, and waited,and waited. A good 50 minutes passed before we got our sushi. The restaurant was busy, but at 9pm when we arrived it was by no means packed. Everything just seemed extremely disorganized. There were five sushi chefs, plenty of wait staff, and still loads of confusion! Unfortunately, the sushi itself was below average. What one might expect to find at one of those sushi buffet places. Management apologized for the wait and thanked us for our patience. I'm giving two stars for their pleasantness, and for food that was just this side of okay. I will not be back. I just want to add that after reading other reviews with similar issues to mine, I see that three months after they've opened that they still have not gotten a handle on their service problems. read more

This place is great! As everyone else has said it's a very close copy of nearby Sushi Palace. In fact, it's basically a clone, as the menu is identical and even the presentation and preparation is identical except for a few new items (hibachi items and a couple of different sushi types). The freshness of the fish and quality of the rolls is at least as good as Sushi Palace. I want to say it's a bit better. The ice cream is better too and the kitchen foods are about the same. They're overall less impressive than the sushi but still good, and they come in nice small portions so you can try a lot. The service IS a little slow but it was completely acceptable for us. The waiters/waitresses were attentive and friendly, the orders were mostly correct (like all these places a couple of sushi were missing on each round but no major mess ups). So it's Sushi Palace. The big difference is the atmosphere, which is much larger and quieter than SP. It isn't loud inside even when the place is filled up, despite probably having as many seats as SP. The price is also only $20, for the all you can eat. I don't think you could get soup/salad, appetizer(s), plenty of sushi, and ice cream for $20 at any other Japanese restaurant. Of course the quality elsewhere will be better - but not by a whole lot. Overall I'll probably pick this place over SP next time, and there will be a next time! read more

We originally wanted to go to sushi palace, but they were crazy packed so we decided to give this place a try even though our friends warned us of how long it took to get the food out. During the meal, my kid and us exchanged some sushi food (between buffet and the bento box) and then waitress came over and said "no sharing or additional fee will be charged". Excuse me, but each one of us ordered a decent bento entree which costs about $15.00+ each and the server is picking on some sushi exchange? while we asked for the check, the waitress said that they will charge for the unfinished food if my boy does not finish everything (3 pcs of sushi, spring roll and 2 tiny eels). Just want to point out that this is not a buffet. Food is made to order. The interior is nice, love the fact that there are booths as well as tables placed not too closely together. It's also BYOB. Service was good as well as prompt; the waitress was polite and always had a smile on her face. We ordered the miso soup, several sushi rolls, as well as some shrimp tempura, all of which were very good and tasty!
