I've had my fair share of hotpot across North America- mainly shabu (Japanese hotpot), with Kim Tao being my first Chinese hotpot experience- and it did NOT disappoint. For starters, this place is HUGE. They have enough space for small parties, larger parties, and even banquets. Surprisingly no wait despite some surrounding hotpot places having over a 3 hour wait. If you really wanted to be secure and reserve a table, you can do it via Google reservations or call them. The menu was surprisingly extensive- there are so many options to choose from and were appropriately portioned so that way you don't over order. Two meats I would personally avoid would be the ox tongue and beef shank as they were pretty tough and didn't taste the best but everything else was really good. My brother and I tried most items on the menu and our favorite proteins were salmon, shrimp balls, tripe, sliced chicken, and marinated beef. Get the mango sago!! It's the perfect palate cleanser and tastes like fresh mangoes. Phillip, our main server, did an awesome job. He was friendly, super helpful, and quick to turn around my brother and I's back to back orders (lol). All of the other staff who occasionally took care of our table also did a great job keeping us clean and well stocked. Despite being relatively busy, service was lightning fast. I will note though, that if you're the type of person who prefers to be sweet talked or indulge in conversation with your server from time to time, this is not the kind of place for that, lol. Nothing wrong with this at all but I'd describe their hospitality as "Hong Kong style" where it's rather sharp and direct which I actually really like. Ambiance was like your typical Chinese restaurant. For the dishes, we got Sweet and Sour Pork, Mushroom Fish Maw, Stir-fried Pickled Mustard Greens with Pork Tripe, Stir-Fried Beef with Hot Green Peppers and the Stir-Fried Beef with Mushrooms and Scallions. We also got the Salt & Pepper Fish. All the dishes were pretty good with very large portions. But the only issue was that the flavor was a bit too strong. I think they might've over seasoned the food. It was also too oily. I think next time, we will ask for less oil and less salt. The sweet and sour pork was not that great though. It was too sweet and the pork pieces was tiny. It also wasn't crispy at all. My favorite dish was the stir-fried pickled mustard greens with pork tripe. The pickled greens really added a nice acidic tang to the dish. As for the $9.99 Hainanese Chicken Rice, I can't comment on how authentic it is but it is such a great value. They actually give like half a free range chicken and the rice was infused with that chicken oil. It was quite delicious. Almost every table ordered this, some even ordered multiple. They do limit to 1 per person. I think this restaurant is great for Chinese food. The prices are cheap and the portion sizes are massive. The dish meal sets even comes with white rice per dish. Other restaurants charge $2.5-3 for a bowl of white rice. The flavor was a bit strong but I think some people would actually like that. But my family has a Cantonese palate and prefer lighter flavors. Next time, I will try their House Special Pork Tripe and Chicken noodle soup. I heard that is what they are known for. This Scarborough location has been around for a long time as seen by the dated interior. Nonetheless it's still popular with some good promos to compete among the huge swath of Asian restaurants in this plaza. We chose an array of hotpot broths including the house special spicy, sukiyaki, pork bone broth & tomato soup. We came here to celebrate a family occasion, and Liuyishou delivered with its good selection of broths, meats, seafood, and veggies. The $8 Wagyu add-on on weekend was a nice upgrade--thinly sliced, tender, and worth trying if you want something a bit more indulgent. The $3.99 all-you-can-drink station was a pleasant surprise too, making it easy to keep refilling without thinking twice. Service was quick even despite it being relatively busy and a bit loud during dinner peak. Note the pricing per adult ($34.99 weekend dinner) excludes the soup base which is about $17 for a large shareable pot or $9 for an individual sized pot per guest so the bill can rack up.
