How excited was I to find out that there was a halal korean barbecue place in Houston?? The limit does not exist. We came in the afternoon and it wasn't very busy, but that was good for us, because we hadnt been in a while and wanted to try it out while they were slow. Because I love appetizers more than anything, I'll give the rundown on that first. The creamed corn was delicious, and we actually had that multiple times along with the kimchi, and the savory pancake. As far as meat goes, the spicy bulgogi ended up being our favorite. All of the meat seemed in good quality and was sliced then so it was cooked quickly. We had a toddler with us, and so I was a wrangling her while my husband manned the grille. It's just something to be aware of because you might think that it sounds like fun until you realize that children and an open grill right on the table table probably should not be in the same sentence. Very disappointed with my visit here. Charging $28.99 for sub-par food in a dirty restaurant is unacceptable. The menus had a sticky residue on them, and the utensils weren't clean. The food lacked any real effort--the kalbi and bulgogi had no flavor, the kimchi was slimy, and the seafood pancake was just plain batter with no actual seafood. As the first and only Halal Korean bbq restaurant in Houston, Kure has quite the following. While driving by, I'd often seen crowds waiting outside late at night on the weekends to get in. I love kbbq, and I love kfc, so since this place specializes in both, it was on my bucket list to try for some time. I finally went with a friend on a weekday for dinner. I was surprised they offered halal menu and regular menu. I went with the regular menu because I wanted some pork belly. Well, that was kinda a mistake. The meat quality was really not that great for most of the items... just kinda chewy and tough. My friend who usually orders from the halal menu claims the halal meat is much better quality, which I believe, because this meat wasn't cutting it. The fried chicken wings were very small. Flavor wise they were nice. I should have ordered more. I didn't much care for the banchan either. Felt they were overly pickled and sour. There were also a few other hiccups. The service was mediocre. I had to ask for something to pour dipping sauces into, when they originally just gave us squeeze bottles of sauce to work with. When I asked for lettuce leaves, a receives two leaves of lettuce... like what? On the flip side, when I asked for garlic, I got a giant bowl's worth. I also didn't like the fact the water for the table was served in a plastic jug. It became room temperature very fast. Finally, one of the servers said they were out of ice cream, only for the next server to tell us they had some, but they only had guava flavor, which was fine by me. Overall okay experience. It looks nice in pictures, but I think there are furniture in the front that can be removed so that they can better utilize the space. It looks a bit cluttered with unused furniture. It appears things are under construction. Seems like they're missing a host table to greet the customers or a cash register to handle payments. 4. Food - it's all you can eat for Korean BBQ, but the portions were pretty small. Flavor was not bad, but I wish we had more side dishes. This is an interesting concept. The meat is "Halal" which means that the meat is prepared and fit to eat according to Islamic Law. The staff was Asian, but the customers were Middle Eastern. I think we were the only Asian customers there. 5. Cleanliness- restrooms ran out of paper towels when we were there. It wasn't exactly clean in my opinion. Service was friendly. Weekend evening was very busy and there was a wait. They take reservations but only for large parties. Parking is also challenging when busy. It is a small strip center with shared parking. One thing I noticed is there are some tables that lack lighting. I saw a table using phone light to cook. They have 2 menus regular and halal unfortunately you cannot switch back and forth you have to commit to a menu. So make sure you look through the menu, they are not exactly the same. There is also a price difference between the menus. And if there a limited item, try to order it first. The garlic beef, I wish it had a little more garlic flavor. I recently went to Kure for the first time and am sad that I wasted so much time not knowing about it. This place is truly awesome! I really like the booth style seating and the use of space. I was very comfortable with my friends and felt like we were never out of food during the ayce meal. Out server was attentive and continually checked in on us and replaced out grill periodically. The food was out of this world. I loved the tteokbokki and the pancakes, as well as the corn cheese. The meats were also spectacular. The sheer amount and variety, as well as top class quality makes this restaurant stand out. We came in with a party of 6 around 8PM on Saturday night. We were seated almost immediately at a dirty table, no one took our order for about 20 minutes, then it took over an hour after placing the order to get the grill set up and get some of the meat we ordered. We never got 2/3 of what we ordered, or all of the sides we requested. They were incredibly short staffed and were unable to keep track of the orders. At 2 different times while waiting on our order they brought out food and laid it on the table, then came back around to say it was accidentally brought to the wrong table and they took it to another table. Makes you wonder how they are keeping track of halal/non-halal meat when they are busy. The quantity and quality has gone down here quite a bit. The chicken wings were the size of quail wings this time around! The tables, benches/chairs, and the floor were filthy as well. Some of the meat they brought out was frozen and frosty. Chill, laid back, kbbq spot that offers halal menu and regular menu. This is a really good laid back spot for when you are just wanting to get a good amount of food, steak- seafood- wings- etc without having to go to a fancy steakhouse. The cuts of meat are great, the marinated meat is great, their wings are crispy and the flavors are really delicious. They have a great selection of sides and apps as well. Their seafood pancake and kimchi soup are amazing & a must! They usually have 6-10 tables at a time and about 2 waiters hustling and bustling so make sure you are nice and tip and appreciate that they are getting to everyone! This is probably my first and last time at this one. I'm giving them 2 stars and feel like I'm being very generous. They've been known as a Korean AYCE BBQ place for many, many years and have changed names a few times also during that time. They were also a Vietnamese restaurant for a short time. In their latest rendition, they are back to being a Korean BBQ restaurant, but they've now added wings. When I walked in on a weekend, they told me it's AYCE only...and wings are only weekdays. I thought that's very strange, why would you want to turn down business when you have no customers at lunchtime on a Saturday. Well, they ended up making an exception for me and made them anyway. The ambiance here is probably their biggest problem, especially at lunch. The interior is dark, cold, outdated, and did I mention cold? Cold in the sense of you don't feel comfortable being there. Their music may have been ok for dinner service with a ton of customers, but during lunchtime and no customers, loud reggaeton music just isn't what I was expecting to hear. There were actually a couple of times I could have (and should have) just walked away. But I told myself, it's just chicken, how bad could it be? They have regular wings and Korean chicken wings. I went with the Korean wings. With the medium order, you receive 16 pieces and these were so tiny, they reminded me of the small wings at hooters, where if you have big hands or need glasses to see them, you're going to have trouble eating them. I chose 2 flavors, Garlic Butter and Thai Chile. The first that comes out is Garlic Butter and these were some of the tiniest wings I may have ever seen in my life. I nearly laughed. The first one I tried tasted like either week old chicken or old grease, not sure which, it was just bad. After about 5 minutes, the Thai Chile flavor wings come out and these were larger at least and the flavor was much better imo. The wings are served whole and not cut up, which is fairly common for Asian restaurants, but it also makes the wings look larger and I believe this is what they are trying to do to make up for the size. Thankfully my bill was only around $30, so I don't feel too bad, and I dint get sick after eating the food. Came on a weekday evening and was seated right away. There's 2 different menu options for AYCE and we were limited to the Korean BBQ option for non-halal. This place used to be Flower Piggy and right across the street from another AYCE Korean Spot (Korea House) Service/Ambiance: Great, very attentive in changing the grill and getting our orders. Not crowded for a Monday evening and we were the last party with 1 hour before closing. Food: Really enjoy the diverse selections and quality of both raw and cooked meats. (Everything is pretty much included on the menu) The fried chicken wings were seasoned very well with a good texture/crunch. The galbi was very tender, pork belly/bulgogi was great and flavorful. There weren't many side dishes but I did like the salad and steamed egg. Highly recommend the blueberry dessert at the end! This is one of the few halal KBBQ places in H town, I'll start by saying that the food was actually decent, but the service is bad. Food: 4/5 decent selection of different cuts of meat, the portions are definitely on the smaller side so if you come in a large group, be sure to order multiple helpings. The fried wings were pretty good, albeit a little on the sweet side Service: 1/5 our servers did not come to check on us very frequently, to the point our grill was burnt black and we had to turn off the fire. Their fire was also weak, they purposely put the flame on low setting for some reason, so you're going to have to turn it on high yourself or else it's going to take forever for the meat to cook. Also had to get up to catch their attention so we could get our check. Ambiance: 2/5 because service was so slow, our table was constantly filled with a lot of smoke from our burnt grill. Kure gets 5 stars for being a halal KBBQ alone but if you compare it to other KBBQ the selection is a little limited in terms of their banchan. The kimchi tastes a little different here than the other places but it is soo good with the little bits of carrot. I absolutely love coming here with my friends and family that strictly eat halal. My favorite cuts are the LA galbi, the garlic butter beef, and the beef brisket. The beef belly is generally one of my favorite cuts at most KBBQ places but over here it is just not that refined. I would also pass on the seafood because I think the meat is just far more superior than the seafood options that they offer. One of the biggest selling points for me here is the amazing Korean wings. The best wings that they have here are the Thai chili! And once you are done eating everything you have to end the night with one of their ever changing soft serve flavors. I have tried lychee and melon so far. I also really like their coconut jelly and that says a lot because I am generally not a fan of coconut flavored things. One downside to everything here is that the service is either hit or miss. It generally tends to be on the slower side. My boyfriend and I were craving some korean bbq but didn't want to drive all the way to chinatown so we found a place that was somewhat close to our home. Kure popped up and we thought we should try it out as it was also open late. When we arrived at 8pm, the restaurant wasn't very packed but there were 2 large parties with more than 8 people and it looked like more people were coming in to join them as I kept seeing people go over to their table. It also looked like they had been there for at least 2 hours or more already. We were invited to take a seat at any table but the table that the waiter had pointed to was dirty so they told us to wait just a few minutes as there was another table that was being cleaned and a grill was put in for us to use. Once the table was ready, we sat down and skimmed over the menu. We requested waters for drinks and for appetizers, we ordered corn cheese, kimchi soup and 2 salads as well as steamed egg. The corn cheese was a very small portion, not really sharable but still tasted good, then the steamed egg and salads. It was about another 20 minutes after we began eating that someone came over to see if we wanted to order anything else and we told the lady that we wanted to order some meats to grill. We ordered about 5 plates of meat and then she left. The meats came out fairly quickly and we began grilled. While we had waited for the meats to come out, palplatestes, scissors, grilling tongs, chop sticks, bonchons and other utensils came out but afterwards, no one came by to check on us. My water cup was practically empty I had kept looking around but none of the wait staff were very observant or would come by to our table to ask if we needed something else. It wasn't until the table behind us wanted to order that I was able to get the attention of the same waiter to ask for jalapenos and garlic slices. They only brought out Garlic slices but never came back to let me know if they had jalapenos or not. I had to ask another waiter who was just walking by if they had jalapenos and she said she's check. When she came back, she threw a small bowl of sliced jalapenos on the table saying "this is all they have." and walked away without asking if I needed anything else, nor checking if I wanted more water (which I really would have appreciated.) A waiter finally came by asking if we wanted to order anything else after we had finished all the meats we had ordered and we ordered about 3 more plates of meat. However the waiter that came by never picked up or made any attempt to clear off our table of the empty plates we had on the table. Even for a less of a busy night, it just seemed as if the staff would wait until the guest leave to clean up and even then they would just disappear all in the back at the same time. There was a few times I noticed there were no waiters visibly on the floor and at a later point they were all sitting at a table cleaning 1 table that one of the large parties had which didn't require all 5 waiters. Overall the food was the only good thing there. The service was awful so I can't imagine what service is like if the restaurant was actually busy. The waiters were unobservant and not available to the guests frequently enough. This Korean BBQ place is extremely underrated! At $21.99 per person for lunch all you can eat, this is a super affordable price that rarely any KBBQ offers anymore post-pandemic. What's special is that the food quality is in no way undermined by the low price. The meat quality rivals any other mainstream KBBQ chains that you can find in Houston. Our favorites were the Garlic Butter Sirloin Cubes and the Beef Belly. Besides the protein, the Seafood Pancake was a huge hit among our group as well (we ordered like 3 of those ). The ice cream. Tonight's flavors were lychee and taro. The lychee was awesome. So, so good. Creamy, fruity, refreshing. Wonderful. The taro ice cream was my personal favorite. The worst Korean bbq experience I've had. We saw that Kure had some good reviews and it was the first time we heard of it. So we decided to check it out. First of all the parking was very limited. Second, as soon as we went inside, something felt odd. Some of the tables did have chairs set up and it was quiet. Third, service: as soon as we sat down no one took our orders for about 20 mins and we were getting hungry. And was literally about to leave. We definitely did not get all our order and one of the guy maybe the manager told us that if the dishes did not come out then it they were out. But no one told us about running out of supplies. Fourth, the ladies restroom was out of order and no one was taking the effort to fix it. Fifth, side dishes were ehh. All we got were fish cake, potatoes, kimchi, and cucumber. Meat were ok, marinated short ribs were little on the salty side, gimmari was so big and in the inside was sooo not gimmari like. I thought I was eating more batter but also felt like frozen food that was microwaved. Seafood pancake didn't have seafood at all. Kimchi soup was sooooo bad one sip I couldn't eat the rest. Miso soup was watered down too so it's also a one sip soup. The corn cheese had too much mayo all I tasted was the mayo. The sauces were not your usual Korean sauce. ALSO! They did not have any seafood menu because they said they did not order because it was the 4th of July weekend.... There many things that we could tell this was definitely not your usual korean bbq restaurant. Menu did not have any Korean writing at all. There were no music. The sauces was not your usual Korean sauces looking and couple more. We should've left to go to Korea house across the street. Wasted $30 for this place. Ever since COVID occurred, I have been dying to go to a buffet or an AYCE place. It's been over 3 years (in my memory) and I was desperate to find a place that would satisfy that craving for me. It was my birthday recently, and I came across this Korean BBQ place that I heard people talking about it, but never thought about going at all. I gave it a shot cause I was craving some Korean BBQ and it was a great experience! The big table with the grill in the middle, the Korean side dishes that clean your palette, the wide selection of meat/seafood choices for you to choose, and the staff were nice and friendly as well! My top 3 meats to get when you come here are Galbi, Spicy Octopus and the Beef Tongue. The galbi is served in nice big slabs and marinated very well, the spicy octopus was the right amount of spice and was tender, and the beef tongue was sliced then and a quick bite to eat while you wait for your other food to come! As another AYCE Korean BBQ, it was a mediocre experience. The meat selections were limited compared to other AYCE in Houston. Although each portion size is quite large, it's all you can eat anyways so the portion size does not matter. The meat quality was ok... and the server was not very knowledgeable with the menu and got confused bringing out our meats that we ordered. I did enjoy some of their side items, but for their actual AYCE meats, this restaurant would not be top choice. The vents were not turned on until we asked the server to turn it on. But even then it was not strong. The server added a lot of oil to the grill each time. My pork belly wouldn't even get crispy on the grill even if we leave it there for a long time. We stopped by this place cause of a recommendation from a friend and oh boi, it did not disappoint! First off the tea was actual tea and not colored water lol. We did ayce menu so we can try out everything, and we got through probably only half of the menu before we got too full and couldn't walk anymore ~ The dipping sauces are great, the owner even stopped by to check on us and let us know how to properly use the sauces with each type of meat for the best taste. Miso soup was great as well. The highlight of the night was definitely all the meat and seafood (my fav was bulgogi and spicy shrimp,) and the wings!!! Them wings were so flavorful and super crunchy (we got the garlic butter flavor) ! Crunch crunch munch munch! And things always end well with some icecream! (Matcha flavor, yum!) The overall Service was nice as well. They checked on us just enough that we didn't feel like we were being watched but also didnt make us feel like we were being ignored. Can't believe I haven't reviewed this place yet! I've been here for both lunch and dinner multiple times, by myself, with friends, with family and the consensus is: YES! Best KBBQ for the price in Houston imo. The chicken wings are also fantastic. The Soy Garlic, Soicy Garlic, and Thai chili are my favorites. Huge high quality wings too, not those tiny little things you sometimes get at AYCE places. The KBBQ is a good variety, the banchan is all good, and the service is great. They replace your grill for you whenever you ask, and the flavors are all good, meat quality high, and fresh tasting. They have several marinated meats that are all delicious, but I really love the five spice pork belly. Highly recommend this casual spot for both lunch and dinner.
