Horrible place! If you are hungry this is not the place for you! Over price and a tiny menu and the portions are tiny!! I got the "house special" $14 for a roll that looked like an appetizer! I don't know how this place is still open. It was empty when I came in and I should have asked to see the menu first. No pictures on menu so that already is a bad sign!!! As you can see in my picture this is the house special. It tasted horrible to! It was as bad as supermarket sushi if not worse. It is really rare that I give such a negative review; however the food, menu and service is a result of a stingy owner who is taking advantage of the customers. How can you price tiny sushi so expensive? The cut rolls are thin and barely have any fish. I only tasted rice and seaweed. Either you improve on your menu and price OR shut it down. I'm doing every one a favor don't waste your time or money coming to this place. I kept asking for the menu as there were only like 10 line items with no pictures. They have more options of beverages then they do on actual sushi! When I looked around other tables I noticed people would order rice on the side perhaps it was to fill thank up since portions are tiny. Never again will I ever come to this place again. I very rarely give five stars for anything, but Kurusaki is easily the best traditional Japanese sushi available in the Southbay, much better even than the fancy places in the city or Burbank, Toluca Lake etc. Sadly, the prices are similar to Pasadena Burbank Toluca Lake etc. but the quality is always exemplary and everything is done in-house. Even the Humble Taquan style pickle here is slightly different than you will get it anywhere else. I've been twice recently with my Japanese colleague. He says best sushi/sashimi in the area. We took the president of a large Asian chain and the president of one of our subs. I have been to Japan more than 50 times and speak Japanese. Very nice evenings. Very few customers do little noise. We were the noisiest. Not a fancy place. Very small. Hidden. Just the famous owner/chef and his very sweet natural wife. Just like Japan. Omakase food and drink was great. Variety and several new dishes. The chef is confident and speaks good English. This is a place for sushi connoisseurs, not a place to order a bunch of rolls, but rather for those who appreciate nigiri sushi/sashimi. The fish melts in your mouth. The rice is cooked to perfection. Quality fish and specialty dishes are delicious. Friendly servers and amazing sushi chefs!! Each night, in addition to standard menu, there are specials listing limited items and fresh fish. I always order items off this extended menu. I have never been disappointed. Even though the prices are more affordable than the Westside, the sushi is pricey for South Bay standards. It is worth every bite!! I am so thankful to have quality sushi in Redondo Beach. New favorite sushi spot their fish is the freshest in town, the flavors of everything are 11/10, and the vibe still feels like a traditional sushi restaurant despite opening semi recently. The service is fantastic, the wife of the owner is the only waitress but she's very personable and friendly. A standout for me is their salmon nigiri: the color is vibrant, the texture is perfectly firm, and the taste is extremely fresh. My personal favorites here though are the kinme-dai and akamutsu nigiris. Both are very fresh and just absolutely to die for! My only complaint would be that their servings are on the small side, especially for the crispy rice, soft shell crab, & rolls. So definitely if you are willing to spend a good deal of money for sushi (not nearly as overpriced as Nobu or Matsuhisa though), this is the place for you. First time i was disappointed. But decided to try again a few years later. The second time was this past november for my birthday dinner. Again i was very disappointed. For those who are coming to this restaurant for the first time this is a very casual family style neighborhood place which I usually like if I was eating box dinner or tempura. But they also serve omakase, multi-course sushi and appetizers of chefs finest of the day. For two people without drinks I expect much more for $235. For the service I was equally disappointed as the food. . I been to many omakase meals at the Japanese counter. I was seated right in front of the head sushi chef who I assume is the owner. I wasn't greeted once or a single word of exchange in two hours. In a Japanese restaurant that is just rude! It's just unimaginable. Yet he spoke few words to other clients. Half of the meal server brought the sushi to us. I am sitting right in front of the sushi chef for heaven sake. I even said hello when I sat. No reply. For a new patron at a sushi counter this was unimaginable. The whole atmosphere at this restaurant was not of welcome neighbor but you are lucky to here so sit and eat what we give you. For me all those things can be over looked if the food was overwhelming. The attitude didn't match the food in anyway. Every dish was slightly off in salt vinegar or quality. For close to $300 including tip I expect way more in quality and execution. Neither happened here. I don't believe he orders the best quality fish to do high end omakase. For that price you don't even get a simple dessert to finish the meal. Again unheard of in a omakase. The server, not the sushi chef, asked if I wanted to order a dessert. I had to decline. For those who are thinking about coming from afar like me to try this 4.5 start restaurant, stay close to home and order a box dinner near your neighborhood Japanese hangout. Wow, that is literally the first word that came to mind when I had my first bite at this place. The fish is so fresh and delicious. Before you read the menu, review the specials board, it is full of tasty bites. I started simple with toro sushi, it was amazingly fatty and melted in my mouth. Next I went with a salmon skin hand roll ... And then another one because the first one disappeared too fast into my belly. I'm fairly picky when it comes to sushi spots, and I had zero complaints for this place. Everything I tasted was delicious and well portioned. Speaking of portions, this place is more traditional than most generic sushi places in the area, so don't expect huge over sized portions and massive rolls that fall apart when you pick them up. Rather expect to order several small plates that are appropriately sized. Also, the saki and beer are moderately priced, so don't plan on doing saki bombs all night. What a great find on a Sunday night. Husband and I were in the area and decided to give this place a try. They have parking in back. Walked in and it was like stepping back in time to an old sushi joint; minimalist decor (perfect). We sat at the table by the front window. They were playing Jazz (awesome) and there were only 2 other couples there (both sitting at the sushi bar), so a great little date spot. Drinks: Sapporo beer for my husband Nigori Sake for me Food: Sashimi platter of the Day-Good. Toro, salmon (husband loved this) mackerel, octopus, (one more, can't remember) Yellowtail yuzu soy sauce starter-Very Good, but unoriginal. Toro w/Yellow Pickle Roll-Excellent. Spicy Tuna Roll- Very Good. Sukiyaki wagyu w/quail egg-Excellent. Good presentation and good sushi. The standouts for me were the Toro w/Yellow Pickle Roll & Sukiyaki Wagyu; really enjoyed these. I was very excited to try this restaurant after reading the article in the daily breeze. I would give the food a 6/5 but I would give the service a 3/5. It wasn't that it was necessarily "bad", it was just extremely slow and they seemed understaffed. The food definitely made up for this but I wouldn't recommend going here if you had a time limitation. Now back to the food...amazing! We got a variety of sushi--yellowtail, salmon, amberjack, mackerel, albacore, uni. I think the uni and albacore were my favorite sushi. We also ordered the uni shooter, octopus ceviche, tempura, mushroom miso soup (which had incredible flavor), spicy salmon hand rolls and blowfish karaage. I think out of those, my favorites were the uni shooter, miso soup and spicy salmon hand roll. Definitely worth giving this place a try! read more

I will always be 100% real with my reviews... So here's what I experienced... $70.08 got me: 10 pieces of chefs choice sushi 1 hand roll (with avocado, even after I told them that I'm allergic to avocado). 1 miso soup So let's just divide that evenly... 12 items divided by $70.08 70.08/12 = $5.84 So $5.84 for each item (one of which I couldn't eat), seems a little steep for the overall experience. I don't know if I would recommend this place to anyone... it just didn't seem worth it for me, but then again.. maybe the quality of the fish is supposed to be good and thus more expensive. The server didn't even know what we would be getting.. Maybe I am just being bitter about having to spend $85.08 (including tip) for something that wasn't really worth that much.. I mean.. it's creeping up on $100 for a semi decent dining experience. For that price, might as well take my ass to Yamashiros or Katsuya... Bottom line: quality not quantity and a bit of bait and switch. We decided to treat ourselves to an omekase dinner from this restaurant on NYE. We called at about 5 pm and chose the $65 per person dinner which had an 830 pickup time. The order was ready on time. We knew immediately it wasn't gonna be enough food as it consisted of two small 5"x7" boxes and small servings of a shrimp head soup. Each bite was extremely good but the portion size was more like a lunch special at another place we like, kappo osen in Santa Monica. Also the ginger serving size was sooo skimpy, which we have observed at a number of places during this pandemic. The list they gave us included sea urchin which was not included and replaced with ikura which you can see in the included pics. It's great quality but be sure to have more food at home for backup like a pizza. read more

Wow. Surprise, surprise! Upon a recommendation of one their current patrons, I went with a slight bit of hesitation as I am Japanese and know what good sushi tastes like. I constantly have friends who recommend various local sushi bars claiming they are "the best" but unfortunately I am typically disappointed...until now. Kurisaki has the taste and feel of a true Japanese sushi restaurant. If you like the typical "California style" sushi, which drowns the flavor of the fish in some mystery sauce and crunchy crap, this is not the place for you. (FYI, they typically do that so they can get away with buying cheap fish). Kurisaki is a very traditional sushi bar and worth every penny you spend. The quality speaks for itself....you get what you pay for. Do not compare these prices to the "other" local restaurants because it's not comparing apples to apples. I had the salmon, albacore, crispy rice spicy tuna, shrimp tempura roll, yellowtail with serrano peppers, and the spring roll. Add some beer in between and you have just had a meal that makes you feel like you have died and gone to heaven. Next time, I am going to let the the chef make his recommendations and take complete control of my meal. I think it's a good way to explore foods outside of my comfort zone. The FRESHEST sushi and sashimi in town. This by far is the most authentic sushi restaurant in the Southbay I've ever been to....and I've been to A LOT! Most sushi restaurant's "spicey tuna" is made with "older" tuna mixed in with spicey mayo and or other spicey oils/ingredients to hide the non-freshness...not this place. The sushi chef literally makes it to order...no pre-made stuff here. This also goes for the tempura items as well. If your order takes a few extra minutes, it's because they are making your items FRESH. My husband and I have been here two times so far and each time was amazing food and great service. Absolutely became a fan of Kurisaki! I went with Sushi Omakase and was highly impressed by the seasoning Kurisaki-san applied on each cut. The flesh was undoubtedly fresh and extremely enticing. However, not just the flesh, the sauce and the garnish on each Nigiri was spot on, never overpowered the flavor of each flesh itself. With Kurisaki-san's mastery of sushi, the overall flavor was readily taken to the next level. That was just amazing! I felt so grateful to Kuri-san for fulfilling my craving for a wide variety of Neta (Flesh on each Nigiri). From Akami (Red Flesh Fish), Shiromi (White Flesh Fish), and Hikarimono (Fish sliced with silver skin left on) to Kairui (Shellfish), the performance of each ilk was unerring. The Hikarimono was particularly standout. They never tasted fishy, and again with the little garnish topped of each Hikarimono, the taste and the mouthfeel were unforgettable. Though I opted for the Sushi Omakase (Nigiri Only), Kurisaki-san was still inquiring if I would like to have some Otsumami (Small Snacks) along with the Nigiri. I nodded my head and told him just a couple of small portions. Then, I got a plate with Tetralogy - Sazae (Baby Horned Turbo), Nama Tako (Raw Octopus), Kumamoto Kaki (Kumamoto Oyster), and Shirako No Ponzugake (Milt with Ponzu sauce). Each one was fantastic! A nice outset! Next, an array of delicious Nigiri was coming... 1.) Tai (Red Snapper) Excellent! It had me have a huge expectation on the rest of Nigiri. 2.) Kanpachi (Amberjack) So good! Next, please! 3.) Aji (Horse Mackerel) Wonderful! Winter is the best season for Aji! 4.) Hon Maguro (Lean Bluefin Tuna) Soft and tender. Liked it. 5.) Aburi Kinmedai (Torched Golden Eye Snapper) Oh boy was that fragrance irresistible! Needed to give a thumbs-up to this one! 6.) Shima Aji (Striped Jack) The texture was very nice! 7.) Mirugai (Geoduck) It had a nice chewiness and crunchiness. 8.) Aburi Kamasu (Torched Baby Barracuda) Another one had that alluring fragrance. Marvelous! 9.) Amaebi (Sweet Shrimp) Sweet! 10.) Bafun Uni (Sea Urchin from Hokkaido) The best Bafun Uni I have had so far. Creamy, sweet, unbelievably good! 13.) Iwashi (Sardine) A touch of grated ginger had Iwashi tasted totally different! 14.) Saba Shiroitakonbunose (Pacific Mackerel with Marinated Kelp) I always liked the union that Shiroitakonbu comes with Saba. Meaty and sweet. 15.) Aburi Hotate (Torched Scallop) I liked this torched version of Hotate. Very good! 16.) Kohada (Gizzard Shed) Delectable and subtle! 17.) Anago (Sea Water Eel) Fluffy and luscious! 18.) Aburi Chu-Toro (Torched Medium Fatty Tuna) Melt in your mouth again. So delicious! 19.) Ikura (Salmon Roe) It wasn't marinated in soy sauce-based marinade, but still tasted good just not what I expected. 20.) Tamagoyaki (Egg) Not too sweet, on the firmer side, just like firm tofu but in the Egg version. I liked it. I really enjoyed the whole Omakase and was glad to see many of my favorites during the night. The only downside is the Shari (Sushi Rice) tasted lightly too soft to my liking. Kurisaki serves up some great sushi! We ordered the Omakase, which was basically about $100/ person. Each piece was really good. I wouldn't say that it's the best I've ever had but it was all very delicious! They get an extra star for the creativity in some of the dishes, whether a sear or a sauce, although simple, the tastes are noteworthy and don't overpower the fish. There are other places in the South Bay that may come close to quality, and certainly those that are better in price, but our experience was certainly worth 5 stars! read more
