Just to note, the cart is plastered with the name Kwik meal, but it appears they have two carts. A lot of reviews under Kwik gourmet are for the Kwik meal cart. Easy to see why there is confusion. This is for the cart at 45 and 6. I was there around 1135 on a Friday. It was cool to read the stories plastered all over the cart while I waited about ten minutes for my food. Great story, but overall, I thought the hype wasn't worth it for the $11 chicken lamb and falafel combo. (Price is a dollar higher for credit card.) Falafel balls were extremely small, like a quarter of what you'd get at a halal cart. Maybe it was because I was first in line but the chicken and lamb were not all that great. Slightly tough. Had I not asked for it, I would have gotten no green jalapeño sauce. The sauce was not very spicy. The white tzatziki sauce was good, but not enough to make up for the medium portion, lack of flavor, and high cost. I got the Lamb Rice Platter which came with a side salad, white sauce, and onions and peppers if you want them in your platter. He will also ask you if you want it spicy which I opted for it. I've heard great things about this cart, so finally gave it a try. I went with a chicken and lamb combo over rice, which is not listed on the menu, but is what I always get at a Halal cart. The chicken was made fresh on the griddle and was served piping hot. It was nice having big chunks of real chicken instead of something more shredded or cut into small pieces. The chicken was also marinated very well and tasted fantastic. The lamb was nice, but didn't stand out. The rice was really good. It was light and fluffy and had a really nice flavor from the spices its steamed with. The entree came with two falafel, which was the weak point of the dish. They should have just left them off the plate. They were these two small falafels that were really dense and dry and lacked much flavor at all. There was some white sauce that seemed more like a yogurt-based sauce. I had asked for the dish to be spicy, but I guess the person forgot since there was no spiciness to the meal at all. There was some lettuce and some sort of sauce over it which was tangy and a nice contrast to the proteins. I added a can of Coke and my total came to $12. I was surprised by the price since I'm used to pay around $7 for a chicken and lamb over rice plate. I guess they charged me for a chicken over rice and then added a portion of lamb for an additional charge instead of just giving me half and half. We were in NY four years ago and had tried Kwik Meal. The food was so memorable we wanted to eat here again this time when we were here for a medical conference. So last night we walked a block from our hotel to Kwik Meal and got chicken over rice. It was even better than last time, if that's possible. The chicken is tender, flavorful and done just right. Might be the best kati roll I've had. The roll itself is just so crispy and flaky. So flaky, in fact, that it retains its texture even when you get to the bottom of the roll which is usually soggy for having mixed in the creche of chicken, sauce, and tin foil while you've eaten it's exposed portions. There are some products where no attempt should be made to make them 'upscale'. McCafe's, luxury boxes at NASCAR events, Thomas Kinkade on canvas *, and 'gourmet' street meat, such as the product that Kwik Meal vends. I appreciate the effort put forth into my plate of halal lamb over rice. Cubed bits of real lamb (not the shawarma blend that most street carts sling), homemade white sauce, and freshly cooked white rice. But I found the lamb to by chewy, salty and a bit too charred for my liking. The white sauce was also cloying, and overwhelmed any subtlety from the lamb and rice. Furthermore, Kwik Meal has boldly kept their product a dollar or two higher than its competition, despite fierce pricing pressure along the 6th avenue stretch. In contrast, a plate of street meat still hits the $6 mark at carts such as the Biryani cart and the famous 53rd & 6th cart (both of which are preferable to Kwik Meal, IMO). Came here at around 1pm and was surprised that there was no line. Another surprise is that this cart takes credit cards. Maybe I don't do food carts much but this is the only I've encountered that accepts credit cards. It's a plus to me. So I tried their Cheeseteak on a pita before and it was yummy. A co worker was kind enough to buy it for me one day. He bragged about how delicious it was. So..I came here to order one myself but asked that they add hot sauce. I asked when I ordered. I asked them again when I got my order and I was told the hot sauce has been added already. I walked away happy and excited. When I got back to the office, ready to devour my cheeseteak, I was disappointed to find that there was no trace of hot sauce on it. I looked even more closely and carefully hoping my vision had failed me..but no..I am convinced that there was never a drop of hot sauce on it. Just melted cheese and white sauce. Sad yet hungry, I took a first bite reluctantly. I only ate half of it because 1. it did not taste as good as I remembered it and 2. my request for hot sauce was not fulfilled. My foodie soulmate sent me on a mission last week to get the reviewed and raved about Philly Cheesesteak from the Kwik Cart. I've always passed the cart on my way from work but never stopped by it. Mainly because there was a line. Well, this evening I only had one person to deal with so I decided it was time to fulfill my mission. The cart had so many options, some slightly higher ($) than standard street meat carts but I can understand why. The way the chef takes care of your order shows a commitment and delicacy to the meal. When I placed my order, I watched as the prepared the steak meat and seasoned it with spices. He also first let the cheese soften to room temperature before placing it on the meat. The pita was heated to the side to absorb the juices from the meat, cheese, onions and spices. Carefully sliding the mix into the pita so not to lose any part, he quickly wrapped it up using two layers of aluminum foil so not to let the juices seep out upon first bite. Presenting me with the sandwich in a bag with lots of napkins was also a good touch. The sandwich itself was incredible. One of my knocks about NYC cheesesteaks is that they don't get the blend of cheese and meat with onions well. They layer it. This was blended! The meat seasoning was also a nice surprise and adding hot and white sauce made it a unique NYC treat. I thoroughly enjoyed the sandwich and would go back for more. read more

This spot is, hands down, the best Falafel stand in the city (yeah I said it)! I've been coming here for years and they've always served a fantastic falafel. Fresh pita bread, crisp lettuce, well-cooked falafel balls, the amazing (but potentially potent) green spicy sauce, and the sour cream are all crafted together to make a tasty non-meat option (I do Meatless Mondays so this is often a go-to for me). At $4.50 a falafel, it's a great alternative to McDonald's or any burger you'd easily pay up to $19 for. The absolute best part about this stand (aside from their falafel of course) is that it's a few blocks away from Bryant Park. I usually buy them and walk over to the park to eat it. We tried both their chicken and rice and their lamb and rice, and they were amazing! The meat was cooked perfectly: well marinated, just a little crispy on the outside, and amazingly juicy and tender on the inside. The chicken was dark meat - probably the reason why it was a little juicier. I did like the chicken better than the lamb, though both were very tasty. The meat and rice came with a side salad and Indian "raita" (a yogurt sauce like taziki) that really goes well with the meal. I'll definitely stop by this place next time! read more

The Kwik Meal Cart is such a wonderful addition to the neighborhood. I say that like it's a new establishment, but no they've been there for years and with good reason. Not only is their food wonderfully priced, but it tastes amazing! I'm a firm believer in the idea that some of the best food is street food. They even accept credit cards! I was able to pay $5 for a yummy, filling falafel sandwich and who can complain about that? It's definitely a bit of a messy endeavor to eat, so I suggest getting a fork. read more

Granted I haven't tried a whole lot of street meat in ny but this particular cart seems a cut above the rest, if the excessive profiles are any indication. The chicken and rice was extra tender and flavorful. I think the rice was seasoned with pickes too which i normally hate but was really good here. The white sauce was in the corner so you can select how much to mix in. One problem is I think since its a cart things might get too close together. One (small) portion of my salad tasted like it was resting with the salmon entree...that one bite of fishy salad was kind of gross. I'm a little surprised that many people can fit in such a tiny cart. They are fast although the owner seems a bit stressed. Also, the portion to price ratio seemed a little high for a cart but I guess with a regular client base in midtown they can keep prices a little higher and still be cheaper than most places. read more

As I was looking for the cart location, I read some reviews about it's recent reputation and food quality. The food here was amazing! Didn't have much expectations for this cart but dang.. the meal comes off very homey and it sure satisfied my craving for good halal food. My girlfriend enjoyed it very much too! We ordered the lamb over rice dish and it cost us $9 for it. I feel that this place is so underrated in comparison to halal guys. There were barely a line and the wait was short. I can see why some people still see the appeal of halal guys despite it's suffering food quality and reputation. A bowl would cost less than $6 and it is still considered a value meal. But that's not what I was looking for. I was willing to pay a little more for quality food. The lamb over rice portion was good and they had some tasty homemade sauce to pair it with. We liked it so much that we went back for 2nds the next day and ordered the chicken over rice $7. We definitely prefer the lamb over rice dish but the chicken dish was good too! Give this humble and underrated cart a try if you are looking for some good halal food when you're strolling along Manhattan. read more

The first time my friend and I visited Kwik's, the cook told us he's sure he'd see us again. And he did; we visited the place twice within our 7-days trip to NYC. On both visits we ordered the lamb rice platter ($9) and on the second we also tried the chicken rice platter ($7). The lamb one was better; the meat is tender and rightly marinated. The platter comes with a yoghurt-based sauce. It is light, moisturizing and it complements the meal well. As a native New Yorker, halal carts have become a staple of my diet. I've visited halal carts that are terrible, meh, okay, and unforgettable. Kwik Meal is unforgettable. Many halal carts can be forgettable, but the food and Kwik Meal is not one of them. Having actual chunks of lamb and not the processed stuff other carts have was a game-changer. It's hard to compete with a place with such excellent quality. One of the things that grabbed my attention was their menu. It has a nice aesthetic and has everything organized into neat little sections (Mini Eats, Sandwiches, Platters, Healthy Eats, etc.). You can get a lot of variety here. We came here as a large group and still received our orders quickly (hence Kwik Meal). This is one of the top halal carts in the city, and if I had to choose to come back to only one, it would be Kwik Meal. read more

In the 5 years I've lived in NYC Kwik Meal has slowly gotten worse and worse. It's right outside my work, so it's always tempting to go there. Their falafel sandwiches are still excellent, and made fresh to order. Their lamb has slowly gotten tougher and less flavorful, as their prices have continued to go up. My coworkers and I have also noticed a trend of them "forgetting" to give change. We've had to ask for it multiple times, and my coworker once forgot and lost $5 out of it. You don't suffer that from most other carts. That said, my 2-star is rated solely on the degrading quality of food, not the questionable ethics. The lamb was pretty disappointing. Though I applaud Kwik Meal for using kebab-type chunks instead of mystery ground meat, it was still cheap meat. The cubes were tough and had too many sinews. This took away from the seasoning (which reminded me of yanrou chuar carts in Beijing). Since I am a Kwik Meal cart newbie, my order contained only the white sauce. To be honest, I never got the hype with 53rd and 6th, so I never really cared much for chicken and rice... until now. The chicken and rice from Kwik meal is simply delicious. I think they use chicken thigh meat which is why their chicken is so tender! They also marinate the chicken wonderfully so the chopped up chicken cubes (instead of bland shredded chicken) are packed with flavor. They also use coconut rice according to my friend. Another reason why this chicken and rice beats all the other ones is because of their jalapeno bits mixture that they put on top of the chicken (don't get this confused with their green sauce). Eh, this cart has gone downhill. I'm thinking this has become a low quality tourist trap because every time I walk by, there's a tour-guide showing it off and going over its history now. They finally have written prices and a full menu posted but prices are still pretty nuts (up to $13 for halal food) but food quality seems like its gone way downhill. The chicken and lamb taste identical now, the lamb looks like beef, and neither are very special anymore. These guys don't "do" the hotsauce/whitesauce thing, and you kind of just get what they give you. Most dishes come with falafel which sounds good on paper but they are bland and tiny, and are probably frozen store bought. Its all pretty flavorless now. Really disappointing considering you pay DOUBLE the cost of any other halal cart on 6th ave. Pretty effing bomb food. It is a little pricier than I'm used to for this stuff, and the wait can be long due to popularity. But I think the food was worth the money and wait.
