Very odd dining experience. Is rude in now?! I missed the memo. We had a 7:30pm reservation but it was raining and there was traffic. I called to say we were looking for parking. She said we had a 15 min grace period and hung up. Not even a buh bye. We arrive to a half full restaurant. Then the hostess proceeds to seat us in the worst table, in a major walkway, and walks away. My friend went back and we ask for another table. She indicates the 2nd worst table surrounded by 3 full tables. We indicate a table across the room that had some empty tables around it. She obliged. Then the waiter asks us what kind of water. We tell him sparkling. I proceed to tell him my drink order but he walks away. Umm not off to a good start. Good news- every thing went up from here! Food amazing. Service outstanding. We got great cocktails. We started with 3 small plates: pickled cucumber salad, seaweed salad, and tuna tartare. The tuna tartare was fabulous! The most unique presentation I've ever seen with the wasabi seaweed crisps. This is a must order dish. Then the Kyojin signature bun. Good. Then under "custom signature dishes", the "topped with Foie gras"; we got the nigiri with salmon. Wow! So yummy! A show stopper for sure. Then the lavender smoked nigiri For rolls, we got 4: the salmon lover, scallop sunlight, headhunter, and green river. Two were too spicy for me but the other two were delicious. You know what I don't like - - attitude. You know what else I don't like - - upselling. You know what else else I don't like - - servers turning on you when you don't bite. Really don't appreciate being judged for not wanting to drop a lot of cash on drinks - - I enjoy sake but I am by no means a connoisseur. We had made reservations through OpenTable a few hours earlier for a Tuesday evening dinner. The restaurant has multiple dining rooms and a comfortable vibe - - our table was in the back where it was quiet and relaxing. Our server was pleasant to start - - but be prepared for an overwhelming amount of menu explaining. Some people like that sort of thing. I don't. We ordered drinks (a beer and glass of sake) and several dishes to share - - and our small table quickly became cramped and overwhelming as everything arrived. The food was absolutely delicious. The spicy miso soup with scallops was flavorful. The watermelon radish was crisp and tasty but maybe a little too salty for me. Our sushi rolls were super fresh and well constructed - - a lot of the ingredients were piled on top, so, important to divide it up evenly so every bite gives you the full experience. They seem to have a lot of rules. Had to give a credit card when I made reservations. They also made it clear that children are not welcome and there's some kind of dress code. Well the food was good but not returning--they decided to be creative and add truffle and caviar to dishes. Which automatically raises the price but then they cut the size of the fish. For example -- the SHARED plates, they take one piece of sashimi and cut it into 6 pieces! And add some sauce. I didn't dare allow them to mess with the toro. Good fresh fish doesn't need sauce or caviar! It was good but not worth waiting for the plates. They should tell u it's ONE piece of sashimi to be shared. Then the tataki style-- the searing was not noticeable (failed) and they had added some kind of sauce to it that totally ruined the kanpachi. Then to make up for the single sashimi dishes designed to share, you can balance it out with their thousand choices of sushi rolls. The menu really is limited if you don't want to stuff yourself on sushi rolls. What was done very well was the Shrimp tempura-- though it was served on top of a bed of tasteless, unseasoned rice. I'm so glad I didn't order any Nigiri if they don't know how to season their rice. This all demonstrates that the restaurant is not an expert with serving delicate fish Japanese style--- The space is large and pretty cool with how they've designed it and redone the old L2 lounge . read more

They were a bit optimistic up front because we had 8:45 reservations and they told us we could potentially be seated at 8:15 and we never got called from the bar. Got our hopes up a bit... But they got us at exactly 8:45 so nothing on them. We got the live scallop special and it was amazing. Loved the flavors and the scallop was scrumptious. It was a bit hard to eat with the uni falling apart so I put the whole thing to my mouth and just slurped the rest. Chirashi was well worth the money, presentation A+ -- didn't like the cooked shrimp (would've preferred sashimi ama ebi), monkfish liver paté, or the smoked-flavored salmon--it tasted a bit artificial to me and made me lose my appetite a bit at the end. The sushi rice was well seasoned, but a bit on the juicy/clumpy side. Loved the salt flake sprinkles on the sashimi -- never had that done before and I enjoyed it. Partner was extremely disappointed with his A5 wagyu rice bowl -- it was drenched in sauce and he said he could barely taste it; he didn't think it was really A5--definitely not worth it. The lobster claw sushi roll was ok. He loved the shooter and the uni pasta. Complaints: the chairs were uncomfortable and the 2-person table we were seated at was way too small--my husband kept knocking his into beer and I felt like I was straddling my teapot the whole night with my arms. I was jealous of the people who got seated at the cushion chairs with the pretty pillows. Oh, and I really hated the chopsticks... They were either really poorly made or I'm a bad Asian lol. This restaurant reminds me of an underground sushi bar in NYC. Its super cute, the vibes are moody/sexy and it's a great spot for a date. Everything about this place is beautiful...the bar, the tableware, the way your food is plated, the drinks, etc. I've been to many sushi restaurants in the DMV and Kyojin is in my top 5. Amazinggggg sushi spot in Georgetown! The vibe is upscale and really is a place for sushi lovers. They have really unique rolls but a big list so there's something for everyone. They also have many non-sushi options (like killer seaweed salad) but really the sushi here is super innovative and very unique! Their cocktail program is equally as great and unique. I love the flavors they combined with their drinks; they all work so well with the sushi. Our waiter was also so lovely! He really guided us through the menu and honestly we mostly ordered for us! If you go and don't know what to get, ask and they'll really steer you in the right direction. A roll I would say you have to get, though, is the Spicy Toro with Uni. I would have given 5 stars because the sushi and the atmosphere are unparalleled in the DC area. Starting with the good, the sushi is out of this world good. I didn't know that sushi could be this flavorful until I dined at Kyojin. So fresh, so tasty, so elegantly prepared. You cannot miss with any dish from what I saw and tasted. Also, the service was thoughtful and helpful. My waiter asked for my preferences, gave me his honest insight based on his experience, and suggested the sashimi dinner (which is a selection by the chef) that went far above expectations. The only reason I took off a star is because I made a single reservation and was seated at the edge end of the chef's station nearest the door. If the bar itself was crowded, or if the restaurant was crowded I could understand this. But it was 5:30, there were plenty of spots around the restaurant and the drinks bar. Had I not been seated so uncomfortably I would have stayed longer and eaten more. I'll probably go back but I won't make a special trip like I did this time. Getting into Georgetown, parking, then getting back out is too difficult only to be given non-preferential seating as a single diner. read more

One of the easiest 5 stars I've given out. The signature rolls are 10/10, my friend and I split 4 and each one was equally delicious. The gyoza (recommended by our waitress, who was wonderful) were delicate, flavorful, and just as delicious as the rolls. The atmosphere is fun, lively, and sophisticated. This is my new favorite restaurant. It's kind of hidden away in Georgetown, so even the walk there down a cobblestone alley was special. The interior is a lot more spacious than I was expecting, and the decor is so tasteful, the lighting and noise level perfect for a date night. This was the best Sushi I have ever had, better than some Michelin star Sushi restaurants. I'm not sure why Kyojin doesn't have a star. The service was amazing! I was excited to try this place and thought the interior and atmosphere were great upon entering, but it somewhat went downhill from there. Myself and 4 friends did the restaurant week menu and all got a drink. We got the first course 2 minutes after ordering and they began clearing our plates soon after. They were clearing our plates without us being finished and bringing out next dishes in an overlapping fashion. First 2 course came out before our drinks because it happened so quickly. We had to explicitly tell them to slow down but it did not get much better and we were being forced out. It was extremely rude and disappointing. We finished 5 courses in less than an hour. My friend & I were searching for a late dinner after attending a show at The Kennedy Center. We are both fasting for lent meaning the place had to have seafood (Friday). I searched Yelp and discovered Kyojin who stays open until 2am! This place is beautiful. It reminds me of NYC. When we entered, we were asked if we would like to be seated in the area playing music or something more quiet. We chose the music. The DJ played a great mix, think R&B/house mix. Our waitress was Nymka. She was great. We ordered edamame with spicy basil garlic sauce. And it is every bit of spicy. We then ordered three rolls to share: the scallop dynamite roll, kamikaze roll, and the Mexican roll. The rolls were good but the kamikaze and the Mexican tasted very similar. For drinks, my friend chose the I'm in love with the coco(nut). I chose a mock tail. I was stuck between the two options but Nymka recommended the Other Side of Honey. read more

Decor, service and food was impeccable! Everyone working had a great eye for detail, whether it was the pace of food or if plates needed to be cleared. We ordered the Toro Tartare, Green Day Roll, Japanese Sandwich, Crazy Monkey and the Bird's Nest. The Toro Tartare had amazing wasabi nori chips, and the toro itself was so fresh, and topped with edible gold flakes and caviar. Out of the 3 rolls we ordered, my favorite was the Crazy Monkey roll. The Green Day Roll was slightly too heavy for sushi and the Japanese Sandwich roll was strangely bland. We also got the Bird's Nest for dessert and chose the red bean ice cream. This dessert was so well balanced. The sweetness of the red bean ice cream was just right and we loved the crunchy bits at the bottom that made up the bird nest. The acidity of the fresh raspberries was also a nice touch. Please note that the bathroom situation was kind of odd. It's an open, long corridor with stalls and the cleanliness wasn't great on the night we visited. read more

Our server Jessica was attentive, responsive, made great recommendations and we really enjoyed everything we tasted. I'd recommend any of their special dishes but my favorite were the garlic scallops and lobster roll. They've got some fun sake selections also, so don't be afraid to venture into a self created pairing, or just let your server go wild. It's all gonna be a bit pricey but worth it. Kyojin has been on my radar since opening last month and finally I had a chance to check it out! For any DC OGs, you may remember this space in Cady's Alley as being the space that L2 used to be. The restaurant is aesthetically gorgeous - chic and sophisticated but also still kind of cozy. The space feels a bit loungey, and would be great for a date night, birthday or just a chill night out. The sushi was great. In general everyone in my party seemed really happy with the food, most were happy with our cocktails but no one was really keen on our waitress. She seemed disengaged and disinterested. When asked for recommendations she just went with the general "everything is good." We also had to follow up several time for a few items ordered. What a great addition to the city! Kyojin DC is in Georgetown -- in a discreet location, got a little lost. The space is small, intimate, and dimly lit. Definitely great for a date, a "take yourself out" kind of night, or a cutesy date with your bestie. We tried a few things: Crispy Calamari, Tuna Tartare, a few sushi items. Everything was amazing! Although the calamari was crispy, it was not overly battered which allowed the texture and flavor of the calamari to not be overshadowed. The sauce that accompanied the calamari had a bit of a kick and was tasty. Great execution. The tuna tartare was also a delight, a hint of spice with fresh tuna. Loved. Now, on to the sushi. We tried the Kyojin Roll, the Peter Roll, Volcano Roll, and a few others. I really don't want to review the three different rolls that we tried because you just need to go and get the Kyojin Roll--that is really all there is to talk about! The Kyojin Roll is stuffed with sizeable lobster tail tempura, avocado, cucumber, and popcorn lobster sits atop the roll with orange sauce, creamy mustard sauce and carpaccio sauce. The plating is absolutely beautiful. I asked my daughter, who is also a sushi aficionado, if she thought Kyojin rivals über popular and equally as good SHŌTŌ, but she said no...she thinks the latter is better. Drinks - We had the OnlyPandans and the Mai Matcha. They took a while to make but were really good. I would recommend the Mai Matcha over the OnlyPandans. Food - The edamame was insanely craveable and was an unexpected highlight of the meal. The house made gyoza were delicious, although it only comes with 3, so if you're with a group be sure to order more. For sushi we had: The Mexican Roll, The Yume Roll, The Dream Roll and the Peter Roll. They were all really good, and the sauces went perfectly. Service - There was a bit of a line at the host station which normally isn't an issue but the entry way is very narrow, so it felt crowded. The servers are attentive and appetizers and entrees are timed appropriately. The drinks were a little slow to come out, but very good. Ambiance - The decor is pretty, although I think the layout is a bit busy (waiters and other guests kept bumping into our tables/chairs). It's dark but the table lamps help mitigate that while keeping the intimate vibe. On my next visit I think I'll opt to sit at the bar. It's best to have a reservation but walk-ins are usually able to sit at the bar from what I gathered at the host station. read more
