I went here the other day to celebrate a birthday with some friends and we had an amazing time here. As some of the previous reviews have mentioned, don't let its location and outward appearance fool you...THIS PLACE IS BOMB.COM. We tried just about everything here and all the cuts of fish tasted fresh (no fishy aftertaste). My favorite roll here was the Spicy Salmon role, it had just the right amount of kick to it. This place is clean, affordable, and it has great customer service. I will definitely be coming back here in the future. FYI they do not have all you can eat sushi, but don't let that deter you from coming in!! This place is great! A true hidden gem of Downey. read more

It's very seldom that I write a review, but I had to for this place. I came in tonight with a friend at 9pm after every other spot in town was closed. Was able to dine-in and sat down right away. Service was great, and the food was just phenomenal. The portions were perfect and the quality was just excellent. Well worth the money we paid. It had us talking about it during the whole ride back. I guess in this part of town, there are not much authentic Sushi restaurant. (Per my friend who lives around there) I came back to Kyoto Sushi because this is my buddy's favorite sushi place and she invited me to dinner. The restaurant is still busy as hell and service is slow as usual, but the Frank Roll was sooo good! Favorite sushi spot in Downey! They have a unique selection of special sushi rolls that'll stuff you up every time. Always love to try something new here! Here is a list of rolls that I've tried in order of preference: Spring roll - We always get this every visit. Each piece is filled with raw fish, jalapenos, and cilantro and wrapped in ricepaper. It's a little on the spicy side, but very tasty! French kiss roll - Very interesting, but good. Inside, there is crab mix and fried shrimp topped with spicy tuna, eel tempura with eel sauce + spicy mayo. The sauces actually taste similar to brownies! (hence I call this roll - the sushi brownie) Azteca Roll - Spicy crab mix and shrimp, jalapenos, cilantro, shrimp with eel sauce, topped with avocado, mango and a slice of lemon! The added sweetness from the mango makes this roll awesome. Salmon lover - As a huge lover of salmon, this was very satisfying. Inside there's crab mix, raw salmon, fried asparagus, topped with salmon + ponzu sauce! Salmon crunch - Delicious! Crab mix, avocado, asparagus topped with fried salmon + mustard soy + eel sauce. Mountain roll - This is just me, but I'm not a huge fan of baked rolls. But this one is pretty good, especially if you have friends that aren't fans of raw fish. This consists of crab mix with cooked salmon + spicy tuna with eel sauce. B.S.A.R - Another baked roll with crab meat, asparagus and cooked salmon on top with eel sauce. Dragon Roll - This one looks like a dragon, which is why we ordered it. But looks can be deceiving.. I wasn't a fan of the dried fish mixed with the eel sauce. The flavors were a bit off in my opinion. And just FYI: we tried these rolls after several trips, not just one! The restaurant is a bit small, but we've never had issues getting a table. Horrible food!! Horribly greeted by women I have attached a pic of.. talk about " grumpy poo" she should win an Academy Award for Most horrible performance at a Restaurant. I always order chirashi in Japanese restaurant, so it is easy to compare.... This chirashi I ordered is one of the worst I ever had... Once I sat I ordered a hot tea... It made by tea bag... So I can't help but think the miso soup also made by instant pack.... The chirashi cost 18.95, pretty normal price tag.... Once it is served... It looked fine, but the fake crab meat made the whole thing a couple dollars cheaper... The fishes are OK fresh, but the biggest problem was the rice... It was hard, and the texture didn't taste like Jap rice... I believe the first step being a sushi chef is to learn how to cook rice (beside washing the rice bowl), this rice is below average. The servers always hide in the back of the restaurant, not that they don't help, but the response time is not top classed.. read more

Food: This is my third time here and I always amazed by the flavor of all the rolls I've tried. This around I had black tiger, lion king and Aztec rolls! Equal amount of flavor that doesn't overwhelm your taste palate but enough to make you taste all the combinations. Service: They are nice and friendly. Since it's a small little restaurant, you can't be missed. You can practically see the sushi makers making the rolls right infront of you. Maybe that's why I like it. Atmosphere Definitely kind of reminds of a hole in roll restaurant. Super warm and cozy yet it still feels like everyone has their space to eat! Definitely a staple of Downey! So... Since my first review I've been back a dozen times or more. Have introduced many people to this little place! I mostly always order the same things. Spicy scallop and spicy salmon hand rolls are the best. You never have to look for the salmon or scallops like other places. No fast food sushi taste here. The sea weed salad is delicious! Never had a bad experience. The service doesn't hover but always available! Dropped in today for lunch and was not disappointed. Salmon sashimi was very velvety and fresh. Seaweed salad and ginger and last but never least a spicy scallop hand roll. Perfection. read more

Been coming to Kyoto sushi for ten years now and their food never disappoints. I drive all the way from placentia to have their fresh delicious cucumber salad, edamame, nude roll and shrimp crunch roll with a Sapporo beer. It's a small restaurant but their food is fresh and worth the drive. The staff always takes care of you. read more

In the local area they have the best rolls. Very unique and delicious. It's expensive and small but also good. If you're into sashimi, there are other places across the street where you can get an amazing platter for a fraction of the price. I'd come to Kyoto for special dinners rather than everyday sushi. read more

It's been a while since we've been to Kyoto. It was one of our "go to" sushi places and always spoke highly of it. Today was a big disappointment. First of all let me say that the service was great. However, the sushi was lousy! When we first walked in, there was a slight bad smell. We ordered several pieces of sushi, a roll, miso and dynamite. The sushi was not fresh at all. The salmon sushi still had the skin attached! The miso soup had no flavor. The sushi roll wasn't made well. You couldn't taste the tempura or ponzu. We've eaten the dynamite many times there and this time it had steamed rice as a base and the scallops were hard. I don't know if we will come back. read more

Only the best sushi in town! Their specialty rolls are like nothing I have ever tasted. My favorites are: Azteca The Lion King MPR Spring Roll Sara #3 Oishi Playboy Most of those listed above with the exception of the Spring Roll are decent bite sized pieces; not like many other sushi spots that roll them so large that you can't fit them in your mouth. Wether you are at the bar or seated at a table, the sushi is the freshest, the beers are the coldest and service is the best you can find. You will not be disappointed. Just get there early! This place fills up quick. read more

The Sara Roll is my fav so far! It's one of the best tasting sushi rolls ever! The only downside is it comes with 6 pc and I always want more! Their pork gyozas are okay, and sometimes they get really busy so their quality of service goes down. read more

Good place, hidden gem in Downey! The rolls are great, had the Rainbow roll that was nice and fresh. Had sashimi....albacore was good large portion a bit pricey though. Service was on point....would truly recommend if in Downey! Staff is very friendly and very attentive, get there early or be prepared to wait for an opening. I always wanted to try this sushi spot in Downey as I had heard many great things about this place, but their off hours made it difficult for me to go until recently. Every time I was hungry and wanted to stop by for some reason they were closed. When we got there we were seated quickly. The service was ok but it wasn't great. Our waiter was attending to the party of 4 that was being loud at the bar. The sushi was good! I enjoyed it more than Tokyo Sushi and it's a lot closer. They had a good variety of sushi which is what I liked most about this location. We decided to try some sake shots but I guess they serve them in a small bottle which was very hard to try and finish since I don't drink much. Having known that they would give my brother and I a bottle Each to drink from I would've ordered just one. So their communication wasn't very clear. The place looks like a hole in the wall from the outside but once inside it looks nice and it's clean. So don't let the outside fool you. I'll probably be back but with the odd closing hours I don't know how soon that would be. read more

Another recent reviewer described the host as rude after being told to wait outside in the rain and wind, and another specifically mentioned that the hostess was not helpful when they had questions. Unfortunately, this makes my experience seem much less like an isolated incident and more like a recurring customer-service problem. I also ordered the hamachi kama, which was cooked really well, although I thought the seasoning was a little mild. They do give you sauce on the side, but I personally would have liked a little more flavor on the fish itself. I also had a bottle of Dassai 45 Junmai Daiginjo, which was really good and went perfectly with the sashimi. I sat at the sushi bar and really enjoyed the atmosphere. The staff was very polite and attentive, and I could hear the sushi chefs speaking Japanese behind the counter, which gave the place a very authentic and professional feel. I ordered quite a bit of food and my bill was around $85 before tip, or about $100 total. For the quality of the food and the overall experience, I thought the price was very reasonable. Overall, a great dinner and a very pleasant evening. I'd definitely come back again.

Sorry if this doesn't site well with regular customers who rated this as a 4 or 5, I have no idea why. I just started working in the Norwalk area and wanted to have sushi on the way home, I choose Kyoto because it was the top of the list and rated a 4, so HOW BAD COULD IT BE (?) terrible. Overpriced rolls $13 average, then Soft Shell Crab that was breaded and deep fried which even smelled of BAD fish, the Yellow tail was not a clear white color but rather Grey, the Azteca Rolls was the only thing that was decent. As for the service, after you get over the getto strip mall, beside the cheif's POOR attitude when you asked for something, his food was the worst. Let me share with you why I think this, I have had Japanese and Korean customers for 30 years and have eatin in some of the best Sushi Bars in Asia and North America, Kyoto's is overpriced and NOT FRESH, $5.50 for Hamachi, $10.00 for Sweet Shrimp, $9.75 for Uni, $10 for Soft Shell Crab and a brown fish they called Albacor, I wish I'd ordered the Snaper, at least that looked fresh. I also wish I had read the review by the guy who said he got very ill from the Uni. I do Not recommend it if you want REAL quality Sushi. Go to Ichiban or Tokyo Garden in the area, a guy at work said Ichiban was a great palce, so next time that's the place for me. read more

Their service was so slow it was like I had to beg my server to come take my order,find out if the rolls were ready, for refills and the check. And it's not like it was a busy night either just my party of two and two other tables plus the two servers both females were just standing around fiddling with their thumbs. It might as well be a self service sushi restaurant. read more
