Meh, this place is good if you live near Eagan and don't want to go all the way to Minneapolis to Wakame or some place that has better tasting sushi, better service, and a better ambiance. The quality with the food I'd describe as acceptable. It just depends on if you've been to a good sushi place or not before. I'd say this is not the place to be adventurous -- stick to what is your favorite at another place because it's easy to be disappointed here. I recommend shrimp tempura rolls. Keep it extremely fucking easy for these people. I've gone to this place 6 times over the past three years, and on two of those occasions I've had extremely awkward experiences with the wait staff that I just considered unacceptable. The first was when I was with my girlfriend who was visiting out of town and we went to the restaurant at maybe 9pm on Sunday when they were closing at 10pm. At this time we were the only ones in the place, and they sat us not too far from a table where other servers were eating dinner. No harm, no foul right? Well, during the meal, more and more people would go to there table as if their shift was over. As 9:20 turned into 9:30, the crowd kept exchanging more and more awkward glances with our table. It was as if they could not wait for us to finish because maybe they could go home early or something. A couple guys had no shame looking at their watches and then looking at us, and looking at each other and saying something loud in another language. Most uncomfortable was maybe a year later when my girlfriend and I decided to give the place a shot again. She tried a few piece of what she ordered, and she didn't like it and wanted to send it back. There were maybe 5 pieces of one roll left on her plate. The waiter told her that if she wanted to send it back it would be a 15% charge because that's considered an excessive waste of food. He said the options were to eat more rolls or there would be a charge. LOL. As if he's gonna force my girlfriend to eat something she doesn't want to eat? I demanded the manager, appealed the waiter's decision, and asked to not incur a 15% penalty. He reluctantly agreed, with a fuss that my refusal to eat those rolls is "costing him money." The national custom of sending food back when you don't like it apparently is not available at this place, no matter how little the amount of food. The kicker is that this story did not end right there. Instead, the waiter had to go to the bartender, and loudly tell this story in another language. It was obvious he was talking about us, because of the back and forth looks at our table. So then we get up, and it's like something out of a goddamn movie. The bartender is staring at me, and there's maybe 4 other people behind the counter staring at us too. As I'm getting up and I find myself enter a staring contest with the bartender, who eventually looks off in disgust, my girlfriend is walking behind me and she's like "Wow, everyone's staring at us!" and then the woman at the end of the line of stares said "Goodbye have a nice day!" and smiled. This was a very stunning, lack of display of individual and group professionalism in a waitstaff. This shit is like 10 minutes from my house, so I will go back again when I don't want to drive to Minneapolis, otherwise fuck this place, I have a long running joke in my head that it is a front for a Yakuza organization. read more

I went here for my birthday and I just could not get enough. This was my first time going specifically to a sushi bar. Other times it has been in addition to other food or made at home. But to experience the ambiance of an actual sushi bar was the best. The yellowtail is my favorite. For a semi-first timer this is definitely a good place to start you obsession. I would have given it 5 stars, but this was my first sushi bar and I have no frame of reference so I'll just say my first impressions were very very good. I miss Kyoto, I used go there with an Ex of mine all the time. Every time I went it was for the buffet. Unlimited sushi for $25 ($15 for lunch!) is expensive, but it is a steal!! The food is great and the place is beautiful. Their is nothing on the menu that I hated. I had a drink once and it was pretty good. I really loved the rainbow roll, Philadelphia roll, scallops, green tea icecream and shumai. I would've rated this place five stars but the service isn't great. They are not rude, but they are not that welcoming and they take pretty long to get your order. I assume its because they want to give you time to start feeling full, so you don't order as much. I usually try to order as much as possible each time since they take so long and I want to get as much as I can for my money. Absolutely love this place. The sushi is amazing and I am never disappointed with the food. However its too expensive to eat at as often as I would like. $20 rather than $25 would be much more manageable. Beyond that the service is usually just ok. They will typically get your first order out in a timely fashion but subsequent orders take forever to come out and are unorganized. Really great sushi! But horrible service! My favorite rolls are the snow mountain, Boston and sexy girl. So delicious. I'm quite certain our server didn't smile a single time during our stay. This place has the rudest staff i have seen in a any restaraunt before. They have price written on a big board 19.99 weekend lunch buffet, and i thought thats what i was getting charged. They charged me 25.99 instead and said price is higher because its fathers day. Its their way of celebrating fatherhood by sneak charging customers extra 6 dollars and then saying i told u so when u came in. (She did not explain that) I came for sushi buffet and was disappointed as sushi rolls are basically 90% rice, with some little bits of other ingredients in them and barely any fish. The sashimi was little chunks of fish that looked like they were ripped off the fish not sliced. The waitress spoke english poorly and when i asked to clarify different items she rambled them on in rapid succession and got annoyed when i asked to repeat the rolls she recommended. I absolutely HATED !!!! My experience here for $30 lunch buffet i could have gone to McDonalds and wud have had a better experience. If i wanted rice i would go to Panda Express. Please fire your hostess and retrain the staff. Really bad services, the employees are not friendly, they are rude, not nice, not happy, they look crappy. After we left the place one of the employees just stare at us without say "thank you" like the word "thank you" is not hard to say. When we want to order more for our table, it so hard to find one to coming to our table and take the order. And when we order green tea ice cream, they gave us strawberry ice cream, also we request for more seaweed salad they never gave it to us. Not only that when we request for more water the employees bring it out and slammed it on the table. When we eat out in the restaurant we always give out really good tip, but for the services they gave us at this place we reget gave them $6, where I can gave that $6 to other services whose are better with customer, not like this place. We tried Kyoto for lunch recently and selected the "all-you-can-eat" option so we could try a selection of items. It looks like in the evening they do Hibachi, we will have to try that sometime. I found the sushi just excellent, especially the unagi, as well as the shrimp tempura. I was somewhat disappointed by the maki (rolls) though. We also had the chicken teriyaki and the udon noodle soup, both of those were quite good but I think the sushi was the outstanding part. read more

Hmmm.... I can tell they are not Japanese and they don't know what they're doing... BTW When Japanese people hear "Kyoto" for restaurants, they assume that this restaurant is serving Kyoto local food. Of course this Kyoto doesn't. I'm so disappointed every time I go there. One time I ordered Sashimi plate and it was horrible. Sashimi slices are paper thin even though this was not all-you-can-eat. Sashimi selections were terrible too. I will go not back to Kyoto. LOVE this sushi place. The hibachi bar is always fun and entertaining, but my husband and I just love coming here for a date night and a few beers to just talk and try out new kinds of sushi rolls. I think they've really made strides to improve their customer service and hosting skills. The food has always been fantastic. Our food was beautiful, tasty, and new orders were brought out quite quickly. Did not care for the mackerel sashimi..very fishy tasting and almost pickled? Food is good but I once had an experience there where a waitress ask me 2 dollar for tip only? Here's my story. I end up paying for 5 adult and 1 child it and it ended up to be about 87 bucks and so and so cents. What can I say? Its unlimited sushi for a great price. The food has always been of decent quality and it hasn't made me sick yet, so thats a win in my book. The all-you-can-eat menu is also pretty extensive and contains a lot of soups, rice, sides, tempura and so forth in addition to the sushi itself. The Sushi is the best I've had in the cities, save for perhaps for Wasabi in Minneapolis. The price is wonderful, the menu is huge and the sushi itself fresh. (I don't care for their tempura much, the veggies seem undercooked at times, but it's not horrible by any stretch of the imagination) The service is horrible. They often get your order wrong or it is slow in coming so it's better to have a large group when going, that way you just let them know the mistake, take the food anyways and continue to eat. Having said that, it's worth the 25 bucks, but it's a much better value for 15, considering the bad service and long wait time for your food. (Compensate by ordering more food right off the start and don't wait until your plate is empty to order more if you're still hungry) Also, I had two incidents in which the person answering the phone told me the lunch price for my reservation but it was really the dinner price when we got there. Sushi was warm, brown, and had a heavy amount of fishiness to it. You could tell it was either a bad batch, or it was old. Regardless it should have never been served. We tried to eat as much as we could due to the 15% charge if you don't eat everything you order. This I believe is a good rule, however when the food has looks that kill, it's more like a sadistic punishment. Now it's just a waiting game to see if we get sick. Wings were dripping in oil and had a funny smell to them. Beef lacked any flavor whatsoever. And the eel fried rice? The eel was mooshy and pink, but not an appetizing sushi pink....more like a roadkill color. It's hit or miss place. Our server didn't know how to take order. I'm not judging for her broken English, but clearing dirty plates, fill water and checking on the table don't required to have excellent English. She disappeared for almost entire time. When she's back, she complained about other table. Worst service ever. Food is not that great considering the total bill is over $94 for 2 adults and 2 kids. My daughter who just turned 11 last month got charged for full adult price ($25.99) and she only ate 1 roll. My fault for not checking, but good server will be more upfront with you. Then they didn't serve us our meals until 7:45. 2+ hours after arriving, and 45 minutes after finishing our meal, they gave us bills for more than double the cost of our food. Horrible experience. I've been eating at other locations before but whatever happens at this location never happened to me before. My friend & I went to dine in for all you can eat sushi there for the first time. The front desk guy seated us at a table and walked away. So we didn't like the table and asked one of the waitress that we would like to switch seats and she told us that we need to go ask the front desk guy. I feel like it's their duty to go ask and come back to us but they want us to ask ourselves. Anyways we decided to just sit there and start ordering. We order the sexy girl roll, #9 and 3 more other rolls. I feel like the spicy salmon has too much crab meats on top and it didn't taste good so we lose our appetite but still want to order the shu mai and dumplings too. Both of those have so much oil and it smells weird but I still tried it. The downside was that when we left I didn't feel good and I feel like I wanted to puke. Husband and I just ate there last night. Can you say yum!! He enjoyed many different sushi, rolls and many other things. I am not a sushi person so I stuck with the Sirloin Beef Teppanyaki, Chicken and Beef Terriyaki, Chicken cutlet, shrimp tempura (these are huge and delicious BTW),friend dumplings, spring rolls, tempura veggies--broccoli, mushrooms and potato were the best. and oh my, the chicken fried rice was to die for! We have eaten at Kami before and decided, from reading reviews on here to try Kyoto..........we were not disappointed in the least. We probably will NEVER return to Kami as the owners/staff always seem to make you feel like you're an imposition. At Kyoto, however, the waiter was AWESOME........he answered any and all questions we had, got our food to us in a timely manner and was very pleasant despite how busy he was. All of our food was fresh and delicious, make sure you try the house made sweet and sour with the spring rolls it is the best I've ever had. If I had to say one thing they could improve on (and possibly the only thing) it would be the people running the food out, they seem distant and unhappy to be delivering the food. We are planning on bringing our kids back to enjoy this experience and we might even have to hit the hibachi grill part some time, the guy cooking was having way too good of a time giving everyone in the restaurant a show. Went there with our family for lunch on 12-9. We all love sushi & visit a number of places frequently. We live in Eagan so very convenient. Price was very reasonable & sushi was good. I love Minnesota but Ethnic cuisine is not a strong point like Portland. I heard some place near IGH had great AYCE sushi. I had lunch, wish I tried dinner as even though its $7 cheaper the lack of fish options(see their website) and sashimi leaves you stuck eating A WHOLE LOT OF RICE! you will be charged if you leave food. A paper thin slice of fish to a 1" diameter rice patty. otherwise saying a 85% carbohydrate meal! I would get more fish doing the conveyor belt in PDX for $17(tax included) with half the rice About the same quality of fish as the $1.25-$2.50 plate joints in PDX/seattle. Oh and they call Escolar "white tuna" Escolar is not a tuna , its closer to a catfish and some places dont serve it due to being harder to digest...a runny ending. This is a BY THE ORDER NOT A BUFFET RACK so expect a wait and confused servers. I eat biblical/halal diet and i was brought shrimp when i ordered salmon, she said i said shrimp once but took it back when i said i dont eat shrimp. first time eating here on their all you can eat menu and i had a wonderful experience (for the most part). our waiter was beyond accommodating and was quick!! we came in on a friday night with reservations at 730pm and a group of 5 ladies. we were seated right away with no complaints about service. the rounds of food were all great until the last round. the fish was fresh and those shrimp tempura pieces were generous and yummy!! we then came upon our last round of fish--luckily we were all getting full so we weren't expecting anything more after this last round. the fish were frozen, seemed like they took it out from the freezer or kept it frozen to be easier to slice. we had to let it sit for about 15-20 minutes before we could dive into it again. and then the cupcake they gave us was so dry that only one bite was taken. even eating it with their ice cream didn't make it better--the ice cream, on the other hand, was good. beware: this is a family restaurant so if you don't like dining with kids--you will get a bit peeved. i dined with 4 other ladies and were enjoying our conversations when we suddenly heard this little girl watching something on her ds from the other table that was so loud it was drowning our conversations out (parents did nothing, and yes, we were being passive aggressive). then there were two little boys kicking their seats making that thumping noise and their parents not telling them to stop (again, we were passive aggressive). It has taken me a while to write a review for Kyoto. I was really excited to have a sushi restaurant in Eagan. I wanted to give it a good review since if I bashed it, we might lose it. Also, I think the $15.99 all-you-can-eat lunch deal fair (as long as you can get the server to come back!). Being half-Japanese and having lived in Japan, I tend to be particular about my Japanese food. The Tempura Don, although not authentic, is one of the best deals on the menu, although the quantity and quality has gone down since the opening of this restaurant. The service has never been great, and is still pretty poor. It gets a one star for me. My last visit, my husband and I ordered from the menu, while our daughter ordered the all-you-can-eat. Our waitress took our order and then warned my husband and I not to share her food. If you have to scold your customers, then maybe you should come up with a different process? She was unfriendly a I ordered my favorite, the sweet potato roll and the potato was under-cooked. I think this will be our last visit, unless it is re-opened under better management. read more
