Excellent high-quality products from someone who used to work in the business, I know. Frequent deliveries of fish products and a major hub to the Northeast region. Small and humble tucked in on the corner of Washington Avenue and Lucas Avenue. One block past the Trailways bus station. One of the few places I consider fish in a five town area. Only minutes off the New York State Thruway at Exit 9 by Camping World with a large American flag. A perfect place to stop and get good food on your way down the highway when you don't know where you are or what to eat, or who to trust read more

Kyoto sushi is one the best sushi places between NYC and Woodstock - hands down! The fish is fresh, the place is pleasant, and the service is efficient. Not to pull rank, but I've eaten in many sushi places in New York and I lived in Tokyo for two years. And I've eaten sushi in Kyoto - the real city. This place can really hold its own in the quality department. Apologies to Jeff S. here; all sushi is NOT created equal. This really does compare. It's really worth a try. Lovely place and good food. but i'm just not feeling it. i wish there were some dank gourmet sushi pit, with crazy drink specials and strange music, and dancing women on dancing sushi poles, maybe a rock garden or a wishing pool, burlesque shows and a vintage attic. a japanese vegas somewhere right uptown. dreams will be dreams. i did, though, at this very kyoto, many years ago, have a fine experience dining in a secluded private party area. read more

live worm in our take out. staff and chef were not happy when we returned for our money saying it was impossible and were super angry at the idea. had to threaten to talk loud so other customers would hear before they gave us our money back. have pics of the sucker and the health dept owns the worm now. more upset by their reaction than the worm which is a risk in any raw food. read more

Here's a tip on how to rate a Japanese restaurant: don't bother with sushi, because unless you get food poisoning, sushi is pretty much the same everywhere. Order the tempura. I've never been to a good Japanese restaurant with bad tempura. Likewise, good tempura almost always means good Japanese food. This is because (I believe) that someone who takes the time and effort to cook tempura properly is someone who seriously cares about how the food comes out. That said, the tempura at Kyoto is excellent. Moreover, they have at least one option that you don't ordinarily get: chicken tempura (for people like my wife who don't do seafood). For that alone it's worth eating here. The portion sizes are excellent, and the selection of other Japanese food is very good. read more

I really think that Kyoto is one of the best places in Ulster County for sushi. Prices are decent, and I'm a sucker for their kiwi tuna roll. Take out is usually fast, fresh, and ready at the time they have given. (Only once in two years have I waited past the time that I was given.) The restaurant itself is nice, but parking can be tricky, especially on a Friday or Saturday night. (Plan ahead.) read more

I ate here visiting a friend, and am no stranger to Japanese restaurants. Hands down the best Tonkatsu I've ever had. Just something about it set it apart from every other place, and that's a common meal for me. The sushi was good, not outstanding. Their Sake selection was quite good for the area, and I was pleasantly surprised that they not only had unfiltered, but a good quality one at that. The service was mediocre - not terribly slow but no value add either. A lot of folks seemed to come and go for take-out, which I think is a huge plus. Fresh sushi, good service, fairly reasonable prices. The non-sushi entrees are delicious too. The tuna tatake, once my favorite appetizer, is still delicious -- but it's now 1/4 of the size it was five years ago. The lunch boxes are all under ten dollars, so if you're looking for a quick lunch and don't want fast food, go for it. The salad dressing they slather all over the salad is pretty nasty, though. If you're used to NYC's ultra-fresh, ultra-chic, ultra-expensive sushi, you'll probably be disappointed. Good sushi is a rare thing. Hokkaido in New Paltz is much fresher. read more

Went to Kyoto's last night for a quick dinner. I have been there many times before but I hadn't yet reviewed for Yelp.com. I ordered the Sapporo 22oz., miso soup and fried calamari for app. Their miso is always top quality, not too much scallions to overpower the broth. The batter on the calamari was light and tasty, the squid tender and chewy. For sushi I had a spicy tuna roll (always), saba, smoked salmon, and uni. It was my first time trying their sea urchin which is a rare find on most sushi menus. The tuna rolls were moist and spicy, though not overwhelming. They, as always, did not have Spanish mackerel so just stuck with straight saba. It was fine, nothing to note. The smoked salmon was very nice, with just a hint of smoky taste. Now the uni. Ummm...well let's just say that it was rather like regurgitated sludge. The texture and taste left much to be desired. However urchin is extremely difficult to prepare so it is a 50/50 tossup when you order. The restaurant is very nice, cozy, and comfortable. The staff are pleasant and efficient. The prices are good, well within reason. read more

I love Kyoto! Granted, it's not the best sushi I've ever had (the best was in Hawaii, incomparable obviously) or even the best sushi around but it's pretty darn good and so is the service! Your server starts by bringing you a hot, fresh washcloth to wipe your hands with, oooooh ahhhhhh... They have a good selection on their menu and it's very reasonably priced. I've been to Kodomo my fair share of times but I always feel rushed, like all they care about is turning tables. There have also been numerous instances where the servers are rude and I don't get what I ask for. The only time I really go there is for the hibachi experience and even then, I'd prefer Ginza. The wait staff at Kyoto are very nice and they put time into their food and actually seem like they care about your dining experience. That's a lot of pluses in my book! The only bad thing is that it's on the opposite side of Kingston from where I normally shop. However, it's completely worth it to take the extra drive when my sushi cravings kick in! read more

If your looking for sushi, this is where to go. The service is very good, and the restaurant itself is very nice. Not to pricy and I'd say it's the best roll in town. Try the specials they have, they never dissapoint, and the usual tekka and unagi are very tasty. They do have teriyaki and tempura but when you go, go for sushi. The teriyaki is good I'd say 4 stars, but the tempura , well let's just say i'm not a fan of deepfried food. read more

Very good, I was traveling through the area and wanted a quick dinner. The sushi deluxe and spider roll were very good.

I love the house type place it's located in. The atmosphere is nice but some Japanese music or some music in the background would have been nice. While the sushi was delicious i though that the pieces were very tiny. I had spicy yellow tail roll with crunch and I'm used to the spicy yellow tail being mashed with the spicy sauce not whole chunk of yellow tail inside but still delicious. Cucumber salad was Devine and service was on point. I love the kimono tops they wear. I might go back but going to check the other sushi spots in kingston first to find my favorite. I am usually faithful to the sushi place i fall in love with since i eat it about 3 times a week. read more

It baffles me that this place doesn't have 5 stars when anyone who isn't a palate-less sheep would know that this is the only place in the Hudson valley for sushi. I'm not talking to the California roll kinda palates so don't even bother continuing. Go there and get the angel roll, the shrimp tempura mango roll, the smoked salmon and avocado! The only place in town with the best fried rice, the best clear soup/miso soup, the best gyoza with multiple choices! Hello where can you get 3 rolls of your choosing of top quality sushi at lunchtime made to order for $11.50!??? Ummm the answer is nowhere. Yeah hey if you like over salted food, rubbery seaweed, poor quality fish and sushi rice that'll all eventually give you the poops you can always march down to the strand to that hibachi joint. Honestly the food is good but yes there is a but, I ordered for a couple of us at work. One of us has a severe avocado allergy. I order this meal first to make sure they were aware. When we sat down to eat several of the rolls were mixed up or incorrect all together. But the whammy was that one of the tools in the no avocado meal had avocado in it. Thank god she caught it but could have been bad. When I called to let them know, I was accused of being a liar and that I never mentioned this crucial item. I said to her well other things were wrong with order but I felt she should be aware of the one with the allergies. Obviously they got the memo about no avocado because two of the three rolls didn't have avocado in them. She said to me well that roll always has avocado. Wait what...that's one she said you lie, you never told me. She was outright arguing with me, when I was just trying to inform her of the error. I actually had to raise my voice to get her to stop yelling to me that I was lying. For this reason I will NEVER order from there again. We will go to Kodomo next time. read more

Went here two times recently with my wife and kids. Nice atmosphere, decent sashimi friendly staff. The tempura was excellent, crispy and light and fresh. That is extremely hard to find, so we were pleased. The miso is good, salad is just so so. But for us the star of the show was the sashimi and we were satisfied. Good Japanese food is very hard to find outside of Asia or big cities, so this is a great choice to tide you over. It did for us. read more

My wife and I went to a late lunch / early dinner. We both had a delicious bowl of Miso soup, yum. We ordered two appetizers. The Gyoza (pork fried dumpling) and the Shrimp and Vegetable tempura. While tasty , both were a bit greasy. Our main was a three roll dinner. we had the salmon, cream cheese and tobiko, the tuna cream cheese and tobiko and the GODZILLA roll. we realize that we are not near the ocean and are not getting south street seaport fresh sushi. it wasn t awesome, but it wasn't terrible. it s as good as it probably gets. up here there isn't much choice. the service was awesome. since we were between peak hours in thus house converted into a sushi place, we had great service. the ladies were all very nice and they played with our son giving us a chance to eat. very cozy and quaint. we had a nice time. just what we were looking for. i would recommend this place . the bill wasnt too bad either , even with two 22 oz Kirin Ichibans. Kyoto is my go to for stress relief. The food is always delicious and the staff is great. The first thing they do is offer you a piping warm towel to wash your hands and it is especially welcome on cold evenings. They are quick and attentive. The house rolls are fantastic. I recommend the kiwi tuna and the godzilla rolls. It's a fresh way to enjoy an evening out. read more

I will never come back here again as well as all the people I had recommended this place to... As I was ready to leave the place...the waitress that had served us..comes up to us ...screaming in from of everyone that was in the place at the moment and says, You forgot to leave me a tip!!!! (screaming)..I said, I apologize..I wasn't thinking..but then I realized ..everyone was looking at me ...workers and clients.. I said...here you go!...however, you never ask for a tip to a client..a tip is a VOLUNTARY EXTRA payment ...Therefore, whether you provided excellent service OR NOT is up to the client to give you something extra...I want to make it clear, I always leave a tip and whether the service was good or bad..I just happened to forget this ONE time...For the record, I've worked as a waitress and maid services at a hotel...There were many times when clients after being there for an entire week, left and never left me anything....I wasn't happy! but I never did what she did!!!!! I think this waitress embarrassed me in front of everyone and it was rude classless and uncalled for. I called this morning to make the restaurant manager aware of the situation and when I called to asked for his name...the person rudely hang up the phone when I asked for his phone # and name. After yesterday..I will never come back again and my friends and family won't either. read more

After a handful of pleasant visits Kyoto disappointed me to the point of having to write my first one star yelp review. My girlfriend and I had a nearly inedible meal that we did not come near to finishing. After a long wait for the waitress to check in with us we explained that we were done and after we declined to take the leftovers home the waitress asked if everything was ok. My girlfriend works in the industry and I myself am sensitive to the plight of the service industry so I very politely explained that after being happy customers on previous visits this was far below what we have come to expect. She said she would speak with the chef. The bill took a long while to come out, was dropped coldly on our table without any apologies and was not comped in any way. Very poor attitude and customer service after the worst sushi meals I've had in the Hudson valley. I will not give them my business again. read more
