I came to eat here on a Wednesday at 2 in the afternoon. We believed with the day time hours there shouldn't be any wait, we were wrong! This place is so popular, they even had a 20 minute wait between lunch and dinner. Everyone who worked there was incredibly attentive and kind. Restrooms were very clean and nice as well. We sat at the bar for the initial wait. I ordered a Margarita, which was presented in a nice big cup with a salt rim, but tasted of lemonade. I wouldn't be surprised to find out there's less than a shot of liquor in there. We had to close out our tab before heading to our table. My go to dish is chicken enchiladas to test out Mexican restaurants. I am new to Texas cuisine, coming from San Diego,CA, we definitely know Mexican food. The enchilada plate was very good! Different, but still delicious. It appears they serve cheese enchiladas, with shredded chicken on top, smothered in cheese and peppers. I can't even begin to describe how good this place is!! The chili rellenos were on point. The tacos are out of this world good. Doesn't matter which ones you order. The shells here are made when you order the tacos. They are no just crispy deep fried corn tortillas. They are crisp, bready and delicious. If you order guacamole just know you will probably have left over. We had one order and it was enough for 4-6 people easy. Listen. There is a reason this place has been here for 97 years!! Wow! I'm normally nervous when someone raves about a place. But this was hands down an excellent place to dine. I was warned that this place gets packed, and there are long waits. So even more nervous. But the hostess stopped what she was doing, greeted me, and was able to find me a seat right away (and it wasn't at the bar) . Great customer service. And my waitress was super friendly. And she made sure to keep my glass full. Now the food: The enchiladas were tasty The taquitos were tasty The quesadillas were tasty And even the beef tacos were, of course, tasty. Before anyone thinks I'm a pig; those all were part of a sampler platter. And they were mini. And half went into a Togo container. The star of the show was the Chile Verde. Outstanding. So this place actually lived up to all the hype. If you're ever on this side of the great state of Tejas, you've got to stop in here. You will go away full and happy. One hundred percent best of the best. Good is great decor is nice and service is perfect. We stop through El Paso just to eat here. Any thing with green chile con queso is insane and we always enjoy the enchiladas and the combo plate. Never had a bad bite here. It does get busy at times so be prepared to wait. One of my favorite places to eat in El Paso. Service is remarkable and food is so incredibly good! I get the steak tacos and my husband get the chicken fajitas!! Wet have been multiple times and always order the same dishes. If it's not broke don't fix it right lol. L & J Cafe really lived up to the hype. The food was great, the wait wasn't super long despite how packed the restaurant was, and the restaurant was pretty lively. Would be the kind of restaurants I would go to go to regularly if it's close to my house but not something I will drive far just to eat there. Eh... it's aiight. I could easily get better tasting Mexican food right down the street from my house. Now I'm not saying that the food isn't good, but I will say that this spot is definitely overhyped. Met some locals at a winery in New Mexico who highly recommended this place. I'm always skeptical of highly rated spots like this. But when the locals tell me where the best food spots are, I listen. Dropped by on a Monday night for dinner and the place was bustling. From the looks of it, this seems to be a popular locals joint. The bar was packed with people and the bartender seemed to know everyone. The hostess sat me in their back dining area. They have a few different dining rooms here. Very festive decor but also a tad bit outdated. I did enjoy their retro Neon light sign out front though. Edgar was my server and he was very cordial but clearly a bit overwhelmed with multiple tables. I told him that it was my first time there and asked him for suggestions. He mentioned that the enchiladas were their most popular dish. I love enchiladas and decided to order them along with a Sangria. One thing that I found weird is that they don't have any hard alcohol. I initially asked for a Margarita, and Edgar warned me that they don't have liquor so it would be made with beer or wine. Um... huh?! Y'all don't have Tequila here??? They have a full on bar in their main dining room, so I was super confused. I figured that maybe they got their alcohol license suspended or something. Ended up getting a sangria instead and it was actually delicious. They give you complimentary chips and salsas here. The salsas were delicious, but the chips were... different. First off, they are fried to a consistency of a Lays potato chip. It almost didn't seem like they used tortillas for these. Secondly, the chips are waaaaaay to salty. I adored the salsa, but I had to literally brush off the salt from each chip because I was lightweight having a sodium overload. My enchilada plate arrived and the presentation was pretty mediocre. But nevermind the presentation; all I really cared about was how it was going to taste. Unfortunately, it was a bit underwhelming. The beans and rice were solid but didn't taste very authentic. The enchiladas were decent but kind of dry. The chicken inside didn't taste seasoned and it could have used some more red sauce. Also, they charge $2.00 extra for a dollop of sour cream. Ridiculous! I mean, the meal wasn't bad but it wasn't anything special. Very average and overpriced for the quality. If this is their most popular dish, then I don't really have any interest in coming back. Got the Mexican combo plate and it wasn't anything to write home about. Only thing good was the 1 taquito and the green chili stew. The chips were good too. No one bothered to ask how my meal was. Found this place thanks to Yelp! Would recommend and would be back. They were serving breakfast and lunch when we arrived. I got the chicken enchiladas with red & green sauce. They were really good and flavorful. No complaints here! My fiancé got breakfast consisting of eggs, sausage, bacon, pancakes, hash browns, & beans, served w a tortilla. He also got cinnamon coffee! The service here was excellent, better than any service we experienced in elpaso. We were constantly checked on and they didn't forget a single thing. Check this place out. Second time round at L & J Cafe with group of 6. Thus far, the appetizers were delicious, and I recommend the bean and cheese dip and the cheese and coke dip. The chips were fresh and a great crisp fresh taste. I also had a mango margarita made with "agave wine" since the restaurant doesn't have a liquor license. It was yummy- disclaimer, I'm a light weight. Leon our waiter was very nice with a great attitude. It took awhile for order to come. It was crowded, but not as crowded as the first time. I ordered the Mexican combination and it was way too much food. Everything on the plate was good and tasty except the taco. I probably won't order again because it was way too much food for one person and not a really a dish to share with others. I had green chili queso as an appetizer and the green chili chicken enchiladas as my main dish. Very high-quality, fresh-ingredient food and I would recommend these to others. If you are worried about spice or wanting spice, I would put these at 1.5 of 5 on spice scale. Service was excellent. Food was prompt. Can get very busy at lunch so we came at 11. We had a table of four and everyone was very satisfied with their dish. Chili con sirloin was a table fave and with adding a cup. We were just traveling through for business and I completely concur with l & j being one of the most reviewed and one of the highest average reviewed places in El Paso. I will definitely return every time I come back to town. FYI parking during peek meal times can be a challenge and so be prepared you may need to walk a block or two and the general surrounding area is an older, lower income El Paso residential area. For me, not generally safety worried I appreciate the authentic vibe. I highly recommend to others seeking high quality local Mexican food, especially lovers of green chilis. read more

Just not designed for me or people who like food like I do. This place has gotten so trendy with non-Hispanics, out-of-towners, and probably non-Spanish speaking Latinos lol. The food has decent flavor but has no spice to it. I've been there several times to give it another chance and to try different dishes. I'm not saying the food sucks because it doesn't. What I am saying is it's not designed for real Mexicanos, as well as some white and black brothers and sisters who love spicy hot food. It's a damn tourist attraction! I had the red enchiladas and green enchiladas and I was waiting patiently for the spiciness to kick in but nada. I also had to add some of that green salsa they provide you in the beginning, just to make it somewhat spicy. That's just sad, when I need to add salsa just to add flavor and spiciness to my dish. I've had their tacos and well, it compares to Taco Bell and just a little toasted but again, they're designed for out of towners and non-Hispanics. That's just my personal opinion and I'm sticking to it. the beans and rice are lame as are the flautas. But on a positive note, the mole enchiladas are delicious. If you go go there, try the mole enchiladas. The chile verde has good flavor, but I prefer my meat small or shredded (personal choice) yet, it's a delicious dish. The chile con queso is good but I like mine spicy (another personal choice) yet again, it's delicious I'm not a fan of their chicken tortilla soup because it lacks flavor, it's boring for me. I slam on them because us El Pasoens who have generations here, cook the same food. I cook most of this food at home and my dishes are delicious. So when I go out for Mexican food around town, your restaurant dishes better be better than mine, or my aunt's or my uncle's or even my grandmothers dishes, just saying.. But the service is great and the waiters are always friendly. At least the drinks are great, including the margaritas! It's like if your mom or grandmother make an amazing pot roast and an apple pie from scratch. When you go to a restaurant such as Cracker Barrel, it better be more delicious than your mom or grandmother makes it..just saying So, for out of town tourists, it's a great place to eat for you all. For me, there are other places I go to here in El Paso for great spicy and flavorful Mexican food. For El Pasoens, go for the margaritas, the chicken mole enchiladas, chile verde and the green chicken enchiladas, it's not spicy but it has good flavor. Hey L&J, don't lean towards TexMex. read more

My team and I were were in central El Paso and decided on LnJ's on a whim. Being around 11 am, I thought seating 13 of us would be a bit of a stretch. We waited for about 10 minutes and a table was ready to accommodate us all. We were a bit tight but we made it work. Enchiladas are my usual go to but I wanted to eat "lite" and tried the chicken flautas instead. Our server, Erika, was super cool to take on such a big party and didn't miss a beat. My food was ready and delivered in a steaming hot plate in about 10 minutes. The 4 flautas were perfectly sized and piled over with lettuce tomato and cheese, my salad, the "lite" part of my meal...I may or may not have left partial beans and rice. The meal was delicious as usual and no complaints. Erika did an incredible job getting us seated, fed, and out and back to work. read more

Traditional, old school restaurant that's still going strong! Food was very good and the service was truly top notch. Mexican combination was an easy decision, as it was my first time there. Everyone talks about the flautas, but that was honestly my least favorite item in the sampler. It was cooked well but a bit bland, even after dressing it up. The taco was also just standard; good not great. However, everything else on the plate was very good, especially the chile rellano. And whatever that stewed meat was in the little cup, so tender and flavorful. Rice and beans were on point. Tortilla on the side was warm, fluffy, and fresh. Green sauce was great on everything. Be warned, parking was pretty difficult and the neighborhood looks a lil sketch. But I parked pretty far and felt perfectly safe while walking to and from the restaurant. The red and green chili sauces are great and the meats are tender and juicy. The rice and beans are cooked perfectly and the chips and salsas are fresh and delicious. Everything is served hot and full of flavor. The restaurant looked clean, the employees were friendly and provided excellent customer service - the General Manager Sergio, personally checked on our table. The restaurant is usually crowded, regardless of the day or time. The staff is professional, fast, efficient and seat you in a reasonable amount of time.
